UFC 108: Martin Kampmann vs Rory Markham possible for Jan. 2

Hard-hitting welterweight striker Martin Kampmann will try to inch his way back into title contention when he takes on former IFL stud Rory Markham at UFC 108 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, according to multiple sources.

"The Hitman" last competed at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort," going limp against the heavy hands of replacement fighter Paul Daley. "Semtex" stepped in for an injured Mike Swick and delivered the goods for a memorable UFC debut win.

Prior to the loss -- just his second in 13 fights -- Kampmann had strung together back-to-back wins after dropping to 170-pounds in an effort to test the waters at a lighter weight class.

That's because his nine-fight win streak was snapped by the much larger Nate Marquardt at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" back in September 2008. It was apparently a wake up call for the Danish kickboxer that perhaps he is better suited to compete in a division 15 pounds lighter.

Kampmann was in line for a possible shot at reigning welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre, until the misstep against Daley sent him back to square one. Now he has the chance to rebound against the IFL vet, who is also coming off a knockout loss earlier this year.

Star-divide

Markham ate leather against British export Dan Hardy this past February at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson." It was a fight that saw him a tad overeager to brawl it out -- which he would pay dearly for.

The loss erased the memory of his head kick victory over Brodie Farber at UFC Fight Night 14 in July of last year, a knockout that was widely considered to be one of the most brutal of 2008.

History may repeat itself against Kampmann in January -- but who who does the knocking and who gets knocked out?

UFC 108 is expected to feature a main event between 185-pound division deity Anderson "The Spider" Silva defending his division title against former light heavyweight champion Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort. Another former 205-pound champion, Rashad Evans, will also likely return to action against another Brazilian, Thiago Silva, in the co-featured fight of the night.

I’d say give him TJ Grant, he refused him before saying it’d do nothing for his career but now he’s coming off a loss it’d be an interesting fight with a backing story

Kampmann is a solid WW, but thankfully Daley saved us from would have been a grotesque mis-match between GSP and Kampmann.

Quite a drop for Kampmann. Question: The winner of Swick/Hardy is supposedly going to get a title shot. Do you think if Davis beat Hardy, he would have gotten a rematch against Swick? I don’t. I think it’s all about marketing, and Hardy is younger, and more marketable than Davis. IMO that’s why he was given the split decision in that fight. Hardy can be marketed to the whole country of England, where MMA is exploding. Some thoughts?

Wow would judges care about what you just said??

Why would judges care about becoming match makers?
sorry for sending didn’t mean too, is it 10 pm yet?

Who knows…Maybe the judges buy into the hype too. Younger fighter, orange mohawk, big mouth. Must be a better fighter. Nobody ever said the judges are perfect. A jury can be influenced by a good defense attorney. Sometimes decisions aren’t always based on what really happened.

maybe they are being fooled by the hype as well? Young guy, orange mohawk, big mouth. Must be the better fighter. Who knows. Jurries can be influenced by a good defense attorney. Decisions aren’t always based on what actually took place.

how the hell does markham have bigger ko power than daley?

by pie juice on Oct 24, 2009 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

why do you americans all say english fighters always get the decision because of 1 fight with bisping and hamill even tho the one brit judge gave it to hamill.

Hardy got that decision because he battered davis silly they should not give decisions to people who just lnp and england is smaller than most american states so why do they have to give english fighters decsions. The state where marcus davis is from is probably bigger than england so it would make sense to give the fight to marcus.

Hardy dropped davis he cut davis and messed his face up davis caused no damage he humped hardy and thats it if davis won that fight it would have been a joke. Just accept that the foreign fighter won and move on i dont think they would pull crap like that bisping lost more fans in america than he probably had in the uk and davis and hardy fought on german soil so it does not make sense them giving hardy the fight if davis won it. Plus the germans hate the english more than anyone.

wow they kinda went low for martin wat about a josh kos or chris ly better match up for him

by elmatador1990 on Oct 24, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

i hear crap on here about hardy all the time one guy said hardy has only fought cans he has had it easy. But he has had only had 3 fights gono markham davis and now swick n maybe gsp how is that an easy road to the title when mike swick has had ten fights in the ufc and the best guy he beat is an injured davis and lost to okami. And if hardy losses or wins with swick he will go on to fight kos or fitch which swick won’t do. I hope daley and hardy beat all the aka guys because them guys at aka are messin the hole division up.

its an easy road when they make a majority of his fights over in england. Bring him out here to fight….all the brits. They are handing their careers to them on a gold platter
