UFC 104 results recap from last night and post-fight discussion for 'Machida vs Shogun'

ufc104recap

UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun" went off tonight (Sat., Oct. 24) from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., featuring a main event between undefeated light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and former Pride FC 205-pound wrecking machine, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Machida somehow remained undefeated with a unanimous decision, but it is certainly a controversial outcome. Perhaps the most controversial since Michael Bisping magically squeaked by Matt Hamill.

Shogun punished Machida for five straight rounds with blistering low kicks. Machida's legs and torso looked like raw sides of beef when all was said and done -- he could barely move in the final two rounds. Meanwhile, Shogun looked untouched when all was said and done.

Neither fighter was ever in any real trouble throughout the 25-minute contest; however, it appeared that Shogun was definitely the busier fighter who inflicted way more damage.

Perhaps because there were no knockdowns the judges erred on the side of caution and gave it to the champion. But it's hard to see how all three judges unanimously agreed that Machida won that fight ... because he didn't.

Only time will tell how this all shakes out, but for now, it appears that Shogun got stiffed tonight. Even Machida looked surprised when the announcement was made by Bruce Buffer.

Speechless. Certainly will have to watch that again, sound off, to see if anything was missed ... but it seemed clear, only it wasn't.

Star-divide

Heavyweight up-and-comer, Cain Velasquez, who was originally booked to take on Shane Carwin to determine the number one contender in the heavyweight division, needed to prove himself once again against grizzled veteran, "Big" Ben Rothwell, in the co-featured fight of the night.

Did he ever.

Velasquez put a licking on Rothwell from bell-to-bell, completely dominating every facet of the fight until the referee stopped the action early in the second round.

It was more than likely not the best time to stop the contest because Rothwell was actually standing; however, Velasquez was just beating him up so terribly prior to the stoppage that it's hard to say it was premature.

In fact, Rothwell is lucky the fight wasn't stopped sooner.

Velasquez put on an absolute clinic. The pace he sets and his ground and pound is perhaps unmatched in the heavyweight division sans the current champion, Brock Lesnar.

He more than likely showed enough tonight to warrant a future title shot. Velasquez is the real deal.

Rothwell, on the other hand, showed his grit and toughness. He's a fine addition to the heavyweight class and will likely have success down the road.

Velasquez is just a ferocious beast.

Joe Stevenson looked to string together consecutive wins for the first time in more than two years against the very game Spencer Fisher.

He seemed relaxed and confident heading into the 155-pound showdown and he remained that way for the entire fight. It was vintage "Daddy" as he avoided brawling with the super aggressive Fisher and stuck to his gameplan of takedowns and ground and pound.

It was the perfect mix, which was just too much for Fisher to handle in the second round. Stevenson pinned Fisher to the canvas and rained down relentless elbows that he simply could not avoid.

Fisher had no answer. And he appeared to tapout just as the referee stepped in to save him from the onslaught.

Nice win for Stevenson, which more than likely gets his name back in the mix of top 155-pound fighters once again. His training with Team Jackson in New Mexico is clearly paying huge dividends.

He looks reborn.

Anthony Johnson and Yoshiyuki "Zenko" Yoshida kicked off the PPV action in a welterweight attraction.

And any skeptics who thought "Rumble" would be sucked out and sluggish after faltering on the scale at the official weigh in were wrong.

Dead wrong.

Johnson attacked Yoshida from the opening bell and stopped 41 seconds later when the Japanese import was on his back staring at the ceiling.

It was an all-out beatdown.

Despite coming in five pounds heavy, which he apologized for in his post-fight remarks, Johnson looked sharp, crisp and powerful. He's an absolute monster who has no immediate plans to move up to 185 pounds.

That's bad news for the rest of the welterweight division. He made a very talented fighter look very bad tonight.

Look out.

That’s enough from us — now it’s your turn to discuss "Machida vs. Shogun" in the comments section below.

Sound off, Maniacs. Let’s hear what you have to say.

I will probably get raped. But, I actually thought it was a close fight. Rua definitely landed more/powerful leg kicks, but machida landed many more hand strikes. When there actually were multiple blow exchanges, Machida landed more shots. The bar I was in did not have audio, so I could not hear what rogan/goldie had to say. But, I saw it as pretty close. Thought it could have been a split decision either way.

by Cole on Oct 25, 2009 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

i scored it 3-2 for machida as well. shogun landed like 4 punches, 1 elbow and a couple dozen leg kicks. machida landed plenty of body shots, 6-10 knees, numerous punches and actually had shogun hurt up against the cage. i think it was a close fight, but i agree with 3-2 for machida.

by newkoba on Oct 25, 2009 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Dude, it was a close fight! All the people in here who thought Shogun won are forgeting that he did NOT dominate, Cain dominated, Shogun just seemed to score more points.

Please rewatch Cain’s fight to understand what dominate means.

by JeremyJackscan on Oct 25, 2009 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

you are a goose if you think shogun didn’t win that fight

by Brad on Oct 25, 2009 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Coming in i thought shogun was gonna get his doors blown off but yea he got robbed. Hell even if you give the close rounds 10-10 and he still wins. Fn CSAC judges. There better be a rematch soon. Machida got outpointed and as such he should have lost just like he has outpointed many other fighters. F the “gotta take the belt from the champ” garbage from boxing. Leave that trash where it belongs in a dying sport (which i still like btw).

Cain like i said was just gonna use Ben as a live training dummy/bag to get some good experience. Fn Maz though ruined it. He could have gotten so much more ringtime. Maz was blowing calls all night. More importantly people got to see real technical wrestling. There is more than doubles and singles to it to the people who thought Ben had any shot. As easy as the griffin-silva pick.

My betting picks were way fn off – gormley, hardonk (even though i did tell everyone Barry was the better kickboxer), zenko (i did say though that was strictly a value thing). Anyways, decent card.

Machida definately won round 3. All the other rounds were so close, I honestly didn’t know how it was gonna come out. I actually had the same score as the judges, giving Machida rounds 1 and 5, but could have seen the fight go either way, and truly felt it was a draw. That being said, it was almost like I was watching a point fighting match at a Karate tournement. Neither man ever really pulled the trigger. If you ask me it almost seemed like they both mailed it in.

On a side note, I was at a place that didn’t have the volume loud enough to hear it, but when I talked to my friends who heard the commentary, they acted like it was a blow out, so there is something to be said about what Joe and Mike see, and what is really going on.

by naturalshadow on Oct 25, 2009 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, I have to admit that Rogan did repeatedly point out every significant strike that Shogun landed and made sure we saw every time he countered Machida with a harder kick or beat him to the punch but I think that’s natural because 1)Shogun’s strikes were much cleaner and more damaging, whereas most of Machida’s strikes were at least partially blocked and very effectively countered. 2) Shogun landed more strikes in each round than anyone has ever landed in an entire fight against Machida and Rogan was shocked at how effective Shogun was against Machida’s supposedly impenetrable defense. Rogan always emphasizes the accomplishments of the underdog when they surprise him.

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 1:58 AM EDT up reply actions

All you have to do is look at Machidas FACE,BODY,AND LEGS and it will say the hole story__SHOGUN got robbed!
F@#K the decision look at SHOGUN and really tell me he lost. BULLSH

by TaPouT on Oct 25, 2009 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Natural I agree with you 100%. I also watched it first at a place with no sound. Then when I got home and watched the replay Rogan and Goldberg really sold it to Shogun. I probably will get flamed also for saying this, but here goes anyway: I don’t think Rua truly won that fight (watching it sound off-then watching the replay sound on). That being said, I don’t think MAchida truly won either or acted with the urgency that a champion defending his belt in close fight, should have fought. In my opinion that may have been the first true draw thta I have seen in the UFC. For every thing Rogan verbally jizzed on for Rua, MAchida countered equally and as often. Rua mos def landed plenty of leg kicks and some body shots, but MAchida scored plenty multiple head shots with the hands and a few flush knees to the body. Rua’s ribs were just as red. Even the one encounter where Machida gets hit flush (maybe the 3 or the 4th) when Rua was backing into the cage, Machida lands maybe 6 or 7 clean hard shots, Rua lands one big shot, misses with 6 or 7, and Rogan busted a verbal nut on the one punch, not the combo of Machida. Joe called it one way I think.

All That being said I am so glad that Rua proved me completely wrong and went all 5 rounds. I really thought Rua was going to get schooled and I am glad to see and say, maybe the old Shogun of Pride is a fight or two away. There needs to be an immediate rematch of this fight before either fighter goes onto fight anyone else.

News flash to all Rua fans.

Shogun lost the fight.

Machida won.

We can talk all we want about judging but in the end one fact remains:

Machida won.

Shogun lost.

Please re read this post as I can tell people are not understanding this. Call it BS or whatever but Shogun lost.

by JeremyJackscan on Oct 25, 2009 2:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Shogun didn’t lose the FIGHT, he lost the DECISION, which these days means about as much as saying he lost a coin toss or a game of craps. If you wanna know who lost the FIGHT, ask Machida’s doctor.

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Neither fighter took significant damage. Both had bruised ribs, and Machida had a cut on his lip. I don’t see Dr. House being called in to save either fighter.

by naturalshadow on Oct 25, 2009 2:59 AM EDT up reply actions

UFC broadcast called Machida “allusive” which means full of indirect references.

I believe they were trying to say “elusive” which means tending to evade pursuit or grasp.

The UFC broadcasters are as smart as some of these fans. What am I alluding to? Or what am I eluding to?

I’m going to go be allusive, or maybe elusive.

by JeremyJackscan on Oct 25, 2009 3:02 AM EDT up reply actions

shonuff, I won’t ask his doctor. I will just check ESPN or maybe go on the UFC webstie next month and search “who is LHW champion” and then it will tell me if it was Shogun or Machida who won.

by JeremyJackscan on Oct 25, 2009 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I just watched it again. Joe Rogan, Dana White, and the fans aren’t the only ones who disagree with the judges. Did you notice when Rogan asked Machida if HE thought he won, Machida side-steps the question and says, “All three judges said so, so I guess that’s how the judges saw it.” And when Rogan asked Machida about a rematch, he said, “Anytime. I would be happy to try again.” You don’t say, “I’ll try again” unless you know you failed the first time.

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 3:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Jeremy, get over it, Machida lost that fight, he knows in his heart he’s not the true champion. Bad decisions happen, people get robbed, and that’s what you saw tonight in the main event. There is no “Machida Era”; he may have gotten the nod from some blind/deaf judging tonight but his reign as lhw champ is still going to be short lived.

WAR SHOGUN!

by O damn he got caught on Oct 25, 2009 5:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Shonuff, I noticed that as well. He said “try” again. But keep in mind his English is weak. Although the word try in Portuguese, “tentar” translates directly. Basically, I agree with you…I think he was surprised by the decision.

I’m completely torn about this because Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg tend to bias viewers when they start pointing out only what one fighter is doing. There were like seven times when Machida punched Rua in the face at the same moment Rua kicked Machida in the ribs but Rogan would act like only the kick to the ribs occurred. Basically, I think judges need not be afraid to score a round a tie. If there was ever a time when two fighters could have tied a round, this was the fight. This truly could have gone either way IMO. But the next fight will be that much more epic between these two. IF I HAD TO PICK A WINNER, I would say Rua won based on aggression, greater damage inflicted.

by RedDog on Oct 25, 2009 6:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I told you all that Machida was a lock, I got an inside tip from Andy that Soares have paid off the judges to give Lyoto the win. Seriously even as a Machida fan I’d conceded the fight to Shogun, he came in with the perfect strategy and was faultless at implementing it.

All of those idiots who bash Shogun for not being aggressive need to realise that MMA is a sport not entertainment and the best way for Shogun to win was to pick apart Lyoto with leg and body kicks. Not only did those kicks hurt Machida but they took away his greatest asset which is his footwork, without that Lyoto looked sluggish in the championship rounds and couldn’t mount an offense to come back, losing both of those rounds soundly in my opinion. He could barely move so lost his explosiveness in attack and his ability to evade his opponent’s attacks, Machida didn’t fight aggressively in the end because he wasn’t physically able to, while Shogun didn’t go against his strategy and fought smart, why be aggressive against a great counterpuncher when you’ve got him physically and mentally beat.

The commentary was very biased, even Goldie called out Rogan for overemphasising all of Shogun’s attacks, with a sly remark about how Rogan kept saying Shogun’s name. That was distracting but it doesn’t take away from the face that Shogun got robbed and it pains me as a Machida fan to admit that. Just as bad a decision as Froch-Dirrell.

I had the fight 49-46, with the 3rd going to Machida but the first 3 rounds being close although Shogun did enough in 1 and 2 to win and easily took 4 and 5. Great performance by Shogun, he proved me wrong by going 5 rounds and fighting smart, it’s a shame that his hard work only won him acclaim instead of the belt.

Machida will be back as a better fighter, he needed a fight like that to improve because you don’t get any better by walking through everyone you face, now that he’s been pushed to the limit by a quality LHW and justly or not come through with his belt, he has the potential to move up another level. Great fight, give me a smart, close, technical match over a mindless brawl anyday, I can’t wait for the rematch. Hopefully the best man will win this time.

In the upcoming weeks prior to this fight, I never gave Shogun a chance. I had speculated that Shoguns agressive style would play into Machidas style easily; much like Thiago Silvas did. However, Shogun proved me wrong. Not only did he go the distance, but I strongly believe that Shogun won that fight. Although it is hard not to be, I am not upset with Machida because I know that this wasn’t his doing. He fought and did what he was supposed to do. So in closing, screw the judges. Mauricio Shogun Rua is the UFC light heavyweight champion in my eyes and Lyoto Machida is yet another victim of the revolving door that is the UFC light heavyweight championship.

So many dumb fans.

After Forrest fight, “UFC is FIXED. Forrest took a dive! Dana White is trying to set up a fight.”

After Rich got KO’ed last time, “UFC just wants to set up Anderson with Vitor! UFC is fixed, UFC is fixed.”

Machida wins a close fight, “UFC is fixed. Roberry! worst fight decision of all time.”

Oh please. such unintelligent fan base. Like the woman screaming next to me the whole fight, “BORING, BORING”. This is MMA and some fighters are intelligent and strike with precision. Such simple minded fans out there.

I hope that you aren’t referring to me. I don’t see any fixing. I just see terrible judging. There should still be an outcry about this ridiculous decision, however. The judges were 100% completely wrong and I don’t see why anyone could see this any differently.

Like i’ve been saying all this time since this fight was anounced SHOGUN WILL SHOCK THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And he sure did. All you Machida nuthuggers can say what you want but SHOGUN won this fight period. It’s sad to say that this decision reminds me of what the UFC was soposed to be against of and that’s a boxing kind of bullsh!t result. This was clearly a SHOGUN beatdown of that bullsh1!t Mashida era crap. SHOGUN should be the LHW champ as we speak. I hope DANA sees this and gives SHOGUN a rematch right away. This is the bigest robery i’ve seen in MMA in my hole life, and I’ve been watching this shit since day one(UFC1)

Anyone who thinks Machida won that fight is insane. I still don’t like Shogun but he deserves that belt. He isn’t back to his old self yet, but tonight was a huge step in the right direction for Shogun. I was really drooling at the thought of a Silva-Shogun fight and the judges ruined that opportunity. I can’t wait for the much needed rematch, because I think both of these guys are gonna come out better than ever. Nobody should be mad at Machida he didn’t do anything. Be mad at the judges and demand change. They need to move to a 5 or 7 judge system, and get rid of the current judges.

Yeah, you called it on this one TapOut. Props, Bro. I’ve never been a Machida fan, but I (and almost everyone else on here and every bookie in Vegas) thought Machida was gonna completely outclass Shogun just like he did Thiago. I actually predicted Machida by Unanimous Decision, but I’ve never felt so miserable being right. Machida got the UD I predicted, but he didn’t earn it. I chuckled at your “shock the world” upset predictions, TaPouT, but you were spot on. Machida is wearing stolen merchandise around his waist and he knows it!

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 3:50 AM EDT up reply actions

All I can say is hopefully the UFC will do the right thing and give SHOGUN a rematch ASAP. Youre prediction was like 95% of all these fools and most of them are still in denial. All Mashida did was stuff a few takedowns and thats really all he did effectivelly. He did not land the most effective strikes or even attempt to take SHOGUN down, or any submissions. SHOGUN did the most damage and Mashidas FACE,BODY, and LEGS prove it. But atleast you see it how it really went down shonuff. SHOGUN should be the LHW Champ as we speak but he got robbed of the tittle.

by TaPouT on Oct 25, 2009 4:59 AM EDT up reply actions

JJ is losing legitimacy being a jerk about all this. He keeps acting like it was a one sided showing. What Shogun lost, yeah that makes me right lmao w/e. The plain fact is he’s the only guy on here defending the decision. He’s like Bisping when he beat Matt Hamil. I would be embarrassed to even accept a win like that. Shogun showed up to fight and he out pointed Lyoto the point master. A rematch needs to happen, and a more aggressive Lyoto needs to show up.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Oct 26, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

how can Machida have won three clearly? For the first time as a MMA fan I feel sick… No matter which way you look at it, the rounds were close enough that it wasn’t complete domination but even though each individual round was close (ish) Rua was the man winning them. My score was 50-46 (3rd round drawn)

by coloneldr on Oct 27, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Even DANA WHITE knew that was total BULLSHIT. Did you see him shaking Shogun’s hand after the fight? If you read his lips he clearly said to Shogun, “You won that fight, Man. You won that fight!” I hope Dana lodges a formal complaint with the CSAC against the judges and declares an immediate rematch, but it still won’t be fair cause Machida will have time to fix all the holes in his game that Shogun exposed and study every detail of Shogun’s timing on tape. Shogun absolutely earned that belt tonight. I had the rounds 5-0 or 4-1 depending on how you scored rd 3, which was the only one where Machida did anything significant. Shogun out struck him 4-1 and did 10 times more damage. I think almost everybody in the restaurant tonight had money on Machida and they still exploded with shock and disgust when the winner was announce. I think the bar’s manager was afraid they would burn the place down.

JJ you are sounding like a complete ass and not once have you defended your view on how you thought Machida won other than three judges and ESPN who’s answer is dictated by those three judges. Machida doesn’t even believe he won that fight. And you don’t need to dominate as a contender you just have to be aggressive enough which Shogun was tonight. It would be stupid of Shogun to just go without caution and would play directly into Machida’s style so that is not a valid argument.

numbers could lie if 1 fighter done 90 percent of his offense in 1 round he would look like he won fight with stats but that doesnt tell story of other rounds.Stats arnt conclusive but they do help give a picture. The fact that all 3 judges scored fight the same means either they all scored it the same way consistently or its fixed and everyone here is choosing fixed.

I do no think Machida won, with that said, I do think you need to decisively beat a champion to be champion. Old school I know and also, DO NOT LET IT TO THE JUDGES. Rua won but what can ya do? Just like Rua said, well what you can do is finish a fight and I am finally a little impressed with Cain, still doesn’t deserve all the hype and the tat is still racist.

that line " DON’T LEAVE IT TO THE JUDGES" is so true but very played out. MMA NEEDS A BETTER SCORING SYSTEM!!i like to see a knock out like anyone but im happy with a 5 round WAR that goes to the judges if they were competent.. BOOOOOO CECIL PEOPLES!!

by KickMyFace on Oct 25, 2009 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, you don’t let judges determine if you are going to win.

Shogun should have been more aggressive instead of trying to point his way to a win.

by JeremyJackscan on Oct 25, 2009 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

At the end of the 4th Shogun’s corner even told him he has to go for strikes and finish the fight. To be the man you gotta beat the man. That’s not just boxing, THAT’S LIFE!

by Crayze on Oct 25, 2009 3:12 AM EDT up reply actions

What are talking about? He was agressive enough. He did’t lay their lie Lietes he went after Machida at the right time. If he was more aggressive he would have fallen to Machida’s style so again it’s not a valid argument since he was aggressive enough. So he did beat the man.

The “never leave it in the hands of the judges” remarks always annoy me, when a fight is close and contested between evenly matched opponents there is always going to be somewhat of a stalemate, you’re not going to get a highlight reel finish in every fight especially when you’re fighting the best, to me that’s just an ignorant comment made by people including Dana who only want excitement and forget that this is a sport or by judging apologists.

There should be no excuses for the judges making a bad call, they do it all the time in boxing. If you win the most rounds in the allotted times then you are the winner, you shouldn’t have to walkover your opponent or finish him to get the win, this is MMA not mortal kombat.

Shogun won the most rounds, by picking Machida apart with leg kicks and nullifying his elusiveness and explosiveness as a result, that should be enough to win the belt, but unfortunately he got cheated out of the belt by biased judges. If he had have been aggressive in the last minute and tried to finish the fight but got caught and finished by Machida then you’d all be calling him an idiot for ignoring his gameplan and blowing his chance at victory. Look at what happened to AA when he went against his gameplan against Fedor and attempted a flashy KO with a flying knee. Shogun should have been awarded for coming up with an outstanding gameplan and sticking to it for 25 minutes, instead he gets robbed in a decision and the same usual finish fights rubbish is spouted.

by David W-S on Oct 25, 2009 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Right on, David. I hate that crap “If you don’t finish it, it’s your own fault if you get screwed by the decision.” While I strongly beleive that fights should be declared a DRAW when neither fighter displays a clear advantage over the other, this was no such fight. By any means of measuring, Shogun EARNED this win decisively. He landed TWICE as many strikes, did considerably more damage, evaded/blocked 80% of Machida’s strikes, and maintained octogon control in every round! This was no draw, this was a clear win for Shogun. He didn’t finish Machida because trying to finish Machida is what gets you killed. Saying he lost because he didn’t try hard enough is like saying a football team that kicks a field goal to win deserves to lose because they didn’t go for the TD. He accomplished what the rules require to win and did so decisively.

Dude, watch the whole fight before you open your mouth. Shogun busted Machida up! He’s gonna have to replace his right femur and 3 or 4 of his ribs. It wasn’t total domination, but he outstruck Machida at least 3-1 and did 10 times more damage. He did WAY WAY more to win this fight than Forrest did against Rampage.

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with David and natural. Meaning that Machida won, IMO 48-47. It WAS clear, not domintate that Rua won. And no one is taking out Anderson, not Shogun, Belfort, or anyone else. Seriously did you watch this fight? Who cares about the play by plays, make up your own mind by watching the fight. I saw a close, 25 minute title fight between the 2 best LHWs in MMA, where one was able to come up with the perfect gameplan to beat the unbeatable champion, only to get screwed over by the judges. The first 3 rounds were close but Shogun definitely won 1 and 2, with Machida just edging out 3 while 4 and 5 had to go to Shogun. I like to see closely contested wars rather than clumsy kickboxing matches, both of these guys were looking to pick their shots and for the first time in his career Machida was picked apart by a better counterstriker. Hopefully the rematch will be signed asap.

Hey I’m a huge Machida fan, but he clearly lost tonight. Horrible decision aside, I believe we saw the one formula for success to beat Machida. Problem is, Shogun may be the only guy in the division with the skillset to pull it off. Bigger picture, we’ve now seen enough highly suspect judges scoring, where you have to ask…..what the hell is going on? It’s not an overstatement at all to call that the worst decision in MMA history. Something needs to be done, and some of these people need to be removed from their positions. I genuinely feel bad for Shogun, as he obviously worked very hard to prepare and executed a great gameplan.

Mazagotti has made some terrible calls as a MMA ref, but this was not one of them. He gave Rothwell more than enough chances to show that he was still in the fight. He failed to do that. If you paid attention between rounds Mazagotti warned Rothwell that if he took more unanswered strikes like he did in round 1 the fight would be stopped. After the 4th or 5th unanswered punch to the face Mazagotti was on his way in to stop it and that is when Rothwell’s knee came off the ground. Too late. (Not that it mattered) He would have taken more unnecessary punishment.

That old boxing philosophy of having to do something extra to beat the champ might apply if the fight was dead even. But that was clearly not the case in this fight. by pan am champ on Oct 25, 2009 1:07 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with everyone…it was a bad decision. I wanted Machida to win but he simply didnt do enough. On the flipside, Shogun being the contender didnt do enough to finish the fight either. Tough fight to score but I would have given it to Shogun just for the damage done to lyoto’s legs. I can see 1 judge giving it to Lyoto…but 3? I dont agree with a previous comment that the UFC is fixed. They have no control over the comission and their idiot judges. Bottom line is that there needs to be a better scoring system for these judges to go by. The current system is too much like boxing and is flawed.

by Mike on Oct 25, 2009 1:07 AM EDT reply actions

I disagree. The Fertita Bros. had friends in the commission in Vegas when they bought the UFC, Dana said so himself. To think this connection extends to CA is not farfetched.

by ItsCalledMMAnotUFC on Oct 25, 2009 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

The conspiracy theories are a bit out of hand. If the UFC was fixed, then somehow they would find a way to give the belt back to Chuck, and let him run with it. If not him, then whoever else would be the most marketable. Neither Machida or Shogun are the most marketable fighters in the UFC’s toughest division. Neither of the two are household names, or even speak english for that matter. They are simply both great fighters that didn’t really put on the greatest fight.

by naturalshadow on Oct 25, 2009 2:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Its the Machida Era…That screams hype. He may not be marketable but their trying to make him so and if Shogun comes in and takes the belt it undos all of the dominance theyve portrayed. BTW Chuck’s reign at LHW was a bit of a feed….Especially after Jackson had already beaten him convicingly in Pride, but they still called him the best LHW on the planet. UFC builds up thier stars like any other organization. To say they dont is a bit green…..

You know- that kind of decision is one that makes you not want to watch UFC anymore… EXTREMELY disappointed as Machida got pushed around… I had Shogun as winning 4-1 or possibly 3-2… but a unanimous 3-2 for Machida…. That’s total bull. Extremely disappointed in that result. But man! Shogun looked goooood! Perfect game plan!
I see absolutely no way Machida won that fight.

by Jesse on Oct 25, 2009 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, if he and his dad are really into all that Japanese bushido honor stuff, he should publicly denounce the decision and refuse the title until a rematch goes down. That would be the honorable thing to do. That’s what I did when I won a city-wide wrestling tournament because of faulty bracketing and bad judging. When they put the medal on my neck, I immediately took it off, walked over and put it on the neck of a rival who I knew would have beaten me in a fair world.

by Jegster on Oct 25, 2009 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

Machida’s answers tell the truth. When Joe Rogan asked about a rematch, Machida said, “Anytime. I’ll TRY again.” clearly indicating that he failed this time, and when asked if he agreed with the judges all he would say was “That’s how THEY saw the fight.” Machida knows the decision was wrong, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he admits it more directly after watching the tape and seeing the stats on FightMetric.

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought the fight sucked but agree with the decision. Shogun was the challenger and could’ve pressed harder. The first 3 rounds were real close and if you going to defeat the champion, it better be obvious. Neither fighter even made it to the ground. The fight sucked, but and I would say they both lost, but there was no clear winner

by LUke on Oct 25, 2009 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but I said the exact same thing about the Rampage/Forrest fight. Outside of that second round, there’s no way you can say Forrest clearly won any other round. In fact, rounds 1,4 and 5 are clearly Rampage’s and yet the judges all gave Forrest the fight and the belt. Meanwhile Rampage was completely unmarked after the fight with the lone exception of a banged up left leg.

So with that precedent I don’t see how that argument holds any water.

by ducknow on Oct 25, 2009 1:12 AM EDT reply actions

I’m a huge Machida fan and I thought the fight was very close but what I saw was a very close striking match. Machida landed a leg kick and Rua counted with one of his own so I count that even. Machida landed 3-4 strikes in the one flurry and Rua landed 1. You have to convincingly in my opinion beat a champion and Rua didn’t do that. Rua landed the better leg kicks but Machida landed the better hand strikes and Machida stuffed every one of Ruas takedown attempts so he won that battle. I see the fight as this, Rua won the leg kick battle, Machida won the takedown battle with his defense and Machida won the hand strikes battle and I thought both were even in terms off aggression and Octogon control so as a judge I would of scored the same with a decision to Machida. Now if Rua would of landed a takedown or 2 then he should of won. Again that’s just my opinion and I’m a fan of both these guys but Machida is my fav LHW fighter.

by rydinlow23 on Oct 25, 2009 1:12 AM EDT reply actions

hey maybe when you’re done sucking machidas dick you can watch the fight again and realize how bad he LOST!

by matmar87 on Oct 25, 2009 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I think this is also fallout from Griffin vs. Rampage. Forrest didn’t do anything to Rampage except land low kicks, and he won the belt, but a lot of people felt Rampage won that fight. Granted he got a knockdown in the first round, but that was it.

Is low kicking a guy but not seriously injuring him enough to win a fight? It’s one thing if it’s a Brandon Vera or Jardine low kick destruction that leaves the other guy unable to walk, but if he’s essentially fine, is that enough to win a fight? Probably, but I guess there’s no use crying over slim pickings. Shogun landed a right hand on Machida’s chin in the fourth (?) round that hurt him more than anyone else ever has in MMA but it didn’t knock him down. If it had, Shogun may have won.

Machida won with punches? Look again, Bro. Very few of Machida’s punches penetrated Shogun’s cover and connected. Their faces show that Shogun connected more effectively with his punches than Machida. Shogun’s punches landed cleaner because Machida doesn’t cover up at all. Expect that to change if they rematch.

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 4:30 AM EDT up reply actions

did machida not check a lot of kicks/knees also though? have some fairness and dont just use 1 side of story

by theboydave on Oct 25, 2009 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I was specifically responding to rydinlow’s claim that Machida outpunched Shogun with head strikes. But Machida only connected 21% of those head strikes, whereas Shogun landed 35% of his head punches, 69% of his leg kicks, and 55% of his total strike attempts. Shogun had a higher accuracy percentage with his strikes and a higher percentage of successful defences. He beat Machida at his own game and in every measurable way!

Lyoto won rounds 3, 2 and even 1. Bruce Buffer’s announcing was way bias in favor of shogun. The hype of Machida was so great going in that more was expected of him. Lyoto landed the harder shots. He hit Shogun with some big knees and punches. Shogun hit Lyoto mostly with hard leg kicks and a few knees and punches himself but Lyoto landed more power shots. It was a great fight, more of a rampage vs forrest UD than Hamil/Bisping. I felt like it was a 3 to 2 fight in favor of Shogun but Lyoto landed clean shots in each round.

you are absolutely right. the announcing is quite bias in fights very often, ive brought this up before. i was watching the fight in a bar, the sound was not on for any of the TVs, and when the result was announced, none of the drunk douchebags boood. yet i knew there would be plenty of bitching for the result. the announcing plays a much bigger role than people realize. for example: in the stevenson fisher fight, when joe landed the left hook that cut fisher open, i went oh nice, yet joe went OH! nice right hand by spencer! my advice to everyone, learn the sport, watch with your eyes and your knowledge. some of these statements are simply confusing me, like lyoto not being able to walk. WTF are you talking about? shogun being dominant and performing like a champion? are you kidding? even tho i admit the fight was close, shogun did NOT look good, and NOTHING like he usually fights. shoguns face looking untouched after the fight? what? his forehead was purple and he had marks all over. ill say it again, NEITHER performance merritted a defense.

yeah, it wasn’t Dana’s doing for sure. He said himself that he thought Shogun won the fight. And what does Dana stand to gain by Machida keeping the belt. The title picture would be a lot more exciting with Machida out of the way, since he’s already destroyed the top 2 contenders. If it was fixed, it was the bookies. Shogun was a 4-1 underdog and if he’d won, they’d have had to pay out a freakin FORTUNE to the people who bet on him. The UFC gains nothing from a controversy that threatens the fans trust in the legitimacy of the sport.

After saying more then I wanted to, on to Velasquez. 2 things. 1st, I am a little disappointed how heavy he relies on his wrestling. I know its his main tool but I doubt he will be throwing Brock or Carwin around like that. 2nd, I know Chieck and Ben are tough bastards, but can he finish people that are decent? Both Kongo and Ben took a million punches to the face and seemed ok. i dont see any so many people are calling this a robbery. NEITHER fighter did enough to win. the truth of the matter is u will never take a belt with nothing but low kicks. and machida did a lot more dmg than it looked like, because shogun is hard to rock. he landed at least 15-20 counter straight left hands to shoguns head as he was throwing kicks. several of those punches wouldve knocked out other fighters, and no strike that shogun threw was as damaging. im not about to argue on machidas behalf because he didnt look good, but neither did shogun. after the fight i said out loud, 48-47 machida (rounds 1,2,3), and i think thats how it was scored. it was certainly close, but dont you dare compare it to hammil v bisbing. concerning cain velasquez; maybe if they paired him up against some one with 1 ounce of ground game, we would see a real fight. now go ahead and bitch away.

What a robbery! Shogun won at least 3 rounds, I don’t see how this turned out to be a UD victory for Machida. I don’t know how they can possibly fix such a screw up.

What did Dana say to Rua right after the decision. Sorry son but we had to do it! Maybe Dana said we will give you a re-match!
I was shocked ! Not sure what the judges were watching but it sure as hell not the Machida / Rua fight.

Think the odds makers influence the judges at all? to those who were arogant thinking and or knowing that this was a lopsided fight, we all know that shogun won so, I told you so, shogun is the best lhw and would rip everyone’s precious A.S. a new one as well. Machida even knows he lost the fight.

by Ultimate Fighter on Oct 25, 2009 1:21 AM EDT reply actions

I thought Shogun won every round.

Maybe the judges score take down defense higher than take down attempts? I would think the attempts count towards aggression. Very bad scoring system.

Shogun was landing body and leg kicks the entire match. Machida didn’t do much of anything but limp and bruise up.

After the Tibau fight I said to my friend, I’m sure Tibau will win, this isn’t boxing. And we went on to have a conversation about the fact that judges get it right more often than not in the UFC. The BAM!!! Its weird how everone I talk to thinks it was a landslide for Shogun yet all three Judges had it for Machida. Wierd. I hope there wasn’t any foul play involved.

I had Shogun 4 rounds to 1. The only round I gave to Machida was round 3 and even that was a marginal decision. Yeah a couple of the rounds were close but still clearly won by Shogun IMO. Even if you took away all the punishing leg kicks I still think Shogun wins. Bizarre decision.

I was in a house with about 15 people watching the fight. 1 professional fighter and 3 amateurs and everysingle person scored it 3-2 rounds for Shogun. And I was going for Machida…

This is BULLSHIT no one is happy about the decision. In my opinion I dont know if thre was another Machida the judges saw win that fight but not the one in the octagon.I think this decision just ruined UFC 104 and disrespected all the fans like myself.I COMPLETELY DISAGREE with this.

@rydinlow23

I agree with your post to the extent that it applies to maybe the first 3 rounds. But in the last two rounds Shogun proceeded to deliver unanswered leg kicks. I concede that Shogun didn’t knockout machida but he nevertheless won in a technically convincing fashion.

I’m curious. I didn’t get to see the fight, but I did read the play-by-play on this site. By the text, it seemed like the first three rounds were even, then the last two Rua won. I reeeeeaally want to see this fight. Mainly, because its hard to imagine a bigger robbery than Bisping v Hammil.

Shogun deserved to win. I doubt the ufc is banned. The “invincible” machida sure didn’t look it tonight, and a rematch wouldn’t be fair. Machida would train for shoguns specific gameplan, the kicks, which looked painful. Who’s to say if this would have been different in vegas. Shogun won that fight in my eyes, was entertaining though the end sucked. Its not like everyone will wake up tomorroow and dana will announce that the judges made a mistake and overturn the belt. But we could wake up to headlines of rua hanging himself after getting fucked that bad…

Anyone thinks Dana has no control over the Athletic commissions then explain why Marc Ratner, former director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission is the UFC vice president. Explain that. Why would the owners want an athletic commission director as the vice president unless there is something funny going down? Not to mention Marc Ratner was absolutely dead set against the UFC in teh beginning. It wasn’t until they offered him a job that he stopped lobbying against the UFC, calling it “cockfighting”. Something is definitely fishy, that’s for sure.

by trilpleleo on Oct 25, 2009 1:30 AM EDT reply actions

I say it was a close boring fight. Rua threw a kick and Machida popped him in his face. That was the fight if it didnt repeat itself for 25 minutes straight, but it did so picture repeating itself for 25 minutes. Yeah the kicks and occasional face shot hurt and do damage but they both did about equal in my opinion. Im still ont he Machida war wagon, even tho he did look bad. I also dont know why anyone is saying that they say the Shogun of the old because that was not the Shogun of the old. He is on his way, but still not there yet. The fight was boring so who gives a shit.

by enzo-enormous on Oct 25, 2009 1:31 AM EDT reply actions

At least this Shogun didn’t gas again, and it was five rounds. I feel bad for Shogun because I think he did squeeze a win out there. Machida was playing conservative again and that isn’t a good thing. By the time he wanted to speed up he was sore from the kicks. Also I will never say another bad thing about Shogun after tonight, he proved he is on his way back and not on the way out. He really surprised me tonight. Cain still failed to impress me, none of those shots looked too dangerous. Again, after 100 punches in the head his opponent seemed fine. Not a mark on him. I find him boring and without KO power. Something has to be done about the judging system, they need to bump up the number of judges to five or seven. The judges that are working these events all need to go, or be taught again how to score a fight. This isn’t the first time this has happened and won’t be the last. If all of us agree that Machida lost and all the fans at the stadium thought he lost, how could all three of them say he won? One of them had to have seen it the way 95% of the fans saw it?

by jay on Oct 25, 2009 1:58 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, whatever criteria their using, it runs contrary to obvious reality. I’m 100% with you on the need for 5-7 judges to reduce BS split decisions. But even with 5 tonights result would have been the same using whatever wacked scoring criteria they use! Plus, I think the whole “10 point must” system is BS. According to the “10pt MUST” if a fighter loses two razor-thin rounds by coin toss and then dominates in the third and is seconds away from finishing his opponent, he still loses the fight. That’s crap. In PRIDE, judges had the discretion to decide the fight as a whole based on who seemed to do the most overall damage and control the action of the fight. AND they were more free to call it a draw or send it into overtime to decide a clear winner rather than doing paper/rock/scissors. It was much more logical.

It was his belt, however the fight was not definitive. I do believe the belt needs to be taken, however I am not impressed with Machida’s performance at all. He was lucky tonight, and I hope he uses this as a lesson and ups his game big time for his next fight in terms of aggression, combinations and continuation of landed strikes. I think SHogun definitely one that fight. I can see a 4-1 or even 3-2 decision, but 0-5 is ridiculous. Machida had a few knees and several punching combos but only landed a couple of punches at the end of his reach. Shogun Landed some vicious knees as well and landed many leg kicks. Not to mention the counter leg kicks and knees Rua threw when Machida came in close. Some judges go by amount, some by damage. Machida’s face had several cuts and his ribs and legs looked beaten. This was just shitty judging. Maybe they had ear plugs in and couldn’t hear the sonic boom from Shoguns shins hitting Machidas legs.

Of course another political controversy. Why can’t people leave things the way they should be. Always trying to find a way to screw someone over to get some sort of benefit for them selves. Worst part of it is that we continue to support them because we like the sport. We can sit here all night and bitch but it won’t change. All we can do is hope that there will be a rematch and Shogun get’s the title he deserves. Until then continue talking shit and maybe just maybe someone will look into fixing things.

Machida beat Shogun? BULL$#IT! On what planet? I did not have a favorite going in to this fight. I actually expected Machida to win. BUT SHOGUN WON! The UFC fans are NOT idiots. They are educated enough about MMA to know how to score a fight. Hell, ANYONE watching that fight, even “first timers”, could tell Shogun won at least 4 of the 5 rounds! If you don’t agree that Shogun won, it is because you are such a fan of Machida that you refuse to see the truth! The UFC is all about the money, even if it means shattering a man’s dream! They did it to Matt Hammil in the Bisping fight in order to cement their international audience (Great Britain in particular), and now they have done it again!

Machida lost plain and simple. Whoever it was that said Machida won the hands battle and octagon control is out of their mind! Sure he landed a couple punches but Rua’s were more damaging. Watch the fight again. Machida spent the whole fight but maybe a minute on his heels. Octagon control my ass. Shogun controlled every aspect of the fight except for the little 5 second bursts he did once a round. They should put them back in there in January if possible for the rematch. I’ve been watching UFC from the beginning and this has got to be the worst decision I’ve seen. This was not the Machida that I have seen fight before. Shogun was cutting off the ring, had Machida off his game, dominated at least 3 rounds. Machida was frustraited, bruised in the ribs and legs, mutiple cuts on the face. 1 Shogun leg kick was doing more damage than 3 Machida face strikes. Shogun won most of the exchanges. F#$k it. Screw those 3 judges. Hope Dana gives Shogun 2 100,000 bonuses tonight.

I dont even think i have to say anything, but i will. I am the biggest Shogun fan. Its not Machidas fault, even he knew he lost. Tonight, i feel robbed. I dont give a shit if yall call me gay or whatever, but i shed a tear tonight, the first time ever over a fight. This is on the real and i dont give a shit.

We have seen shitty decisions in the past, boxing, mma you name it. If people dont think that this is the biggest robbery of all time, then i dont even know what to say to them. I planned on getting on here tonight and typing up a curse word storm from hell, but i changed my mind after i calmed down. AM i pissed? yes, but im more sad and hurt and i feel like crap. I feel so bad for Shogun, the work he put in,to see him in his locker room in what looked like in tears, just to have his dream taken away from some idiot judges who should never have the right to work in MMA ever again. Cecil Peoples should be banned from all combat sport judging for life.

I was so upset that I vowed to boycott MMA for a while because i felt that it was the only true and honest combat sport left , but after tonight, im confused and hurt. AM i going to stop watching MMA, no im not. I love it, but something fied from me tonight for MMA and something was taken away from the sport tonight by some IDIOT judges and it will be a while before i can get hype for another fight. Thats on the real. Does the UFC care if i watch or not? Probably not, and its not their fault or Machida, I love the UFC, MMA and i even like Machida. BUt man, i feel empty right now. I feel like it will be a while before i can honestly sit down, order a UFC PPV and get hype for it. Why? So the clear winner can be robbed if his title again?

Dana, if you have any say over this, please make an immediate rematch. Well in all honesty, i wish you would overturn it because i dont think Shogun should have to fight again. He clearly won. He knew it, the fans knew it, Machidas fans knew it, and even Machida knows it.

Again, im confused and hurt tonight. I feel like we have all been robbed, not just Shogun, even though he showed so much class after the fight.

Sincerley,
a heartbroken MMA fan.

I can’t wait for the compu-strike thing to come out cause Shogun spoon fed Machida kicks to the legs and body all night. It wasn’t a dominating victory for Shogun but Machida did not win that fight. That was pitiful what the judges did to Shogun. I hope the 3 judges really felt this was a unanimous decision and that this isn’t just all politics.

by Vern on Oct 25, 2009 1:48 AM EDT reply actions

This is the worst decision I have ever seen. If it would have been split I wouldn’t have protested too much but unanimous(wtfe)! John G, I couldn’t have disagreed anymore with your prediction of Shogun! Now, I have to say you are a prophet and I give you props because Shogun won the fight 50-45 and Dana needs to set this straight, as I am sure he will. Wow, I have never seen such a travesty! Dana will clean up the mess though, he knows this was BS. If you have to beat the champ up so convincingly then Rampage would still be LHW champ! This will go down as the worst decision ever and I’m sure that several casual fans will never watch the sport again. Terrible, just terrible.

Machida knows he lost. Dana knows Machida lost. The Furtitas know Machida lost. Rogan knows Machida lost. The judges know Machida lost. Shogun knows Machida lost and EVERYONE rooting in the crowd for Machida knows he lost(they chanted for Machida yet booed him on the decision). The internet bloggers know he lost. Machida should give his belt over in respect if he is as honorable as he protrays. I know Silva would hand his belt over if he were caught in a obviously bad descision like this. The UFC is lower than the WWF because at least in the WWF everyone knows its fixed. I, and Everyone I know, are going to stop watching Spike UFC and Payperview UFC events unless this is fixed. This is yet ANOTHER obvious fixed fight in the UFC. Dana and the Furtitas along with these judges should be investigated because the fight is on tape. The rescoring by the sanctioned commission can easily re-watch the fight. This IS criminal. I am backing a criminal investigation into the bribary of judges and those involved in said allegations. Those who want to partisipate can write the commission who oversees this LA, California fight.

Shogun is definately #1 but rankings will have him 2nd and once again shogun is short from success in being a champion. 3rd time will be his charm.

To every one who is blambing the UFC and Dana White for this, you are idots. The UFC matched up these two. They put them in the octagin and let them have at it. They didn’t choose the judges. They didn’t tell the fighters how to fight.

What the UFC and Dana White did was put together the best fight they possibly could. The rest is up to the fighters.

Rua could have won the fight outright if he stopped Machida. But he didn’t.

Rua didn’t do enough to win. He never took down Machida. he never had him in trouble. he nevber tried to submit him. And he landed very few punches.

Rua’s kicks were devistating. But it wasn’t enough.

Rematch? Yes, there should be one. Soon.

by Tiger Mike on Oct 25, 2009 2:22 AM EDT reply actions

Of course it’s not the UFC’s fault, but it was also bullsh$7. What did Machida do to WIN the fight? More damage, Shogun. More aggression, Shogun. Octagon control, yep, shogun. Yea, Machida didn’t get punched a lot, but apparently kicks don’t count in TigerMike’s world. The champ doesn’t automatically get the decision if the challenger doesn’t finish him. It’s on a fight to fight basis and Shogun won every aspect of the fight except the fact that he wasn’t champ coming in to the fight. Period.

by denni on Oct 25, 2009 2:31 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with this. If all Shogun did was land kicks, what did Machida do? I think its terrible that just because you are the champion you dont have to anything to win the fight, you just have to not lose the fight. I, too, want to see the fight stats but Shogun controlled the fight, and landed more meaningful shots. I also think he landed more shots but we will see.

If you listened to Joe Rogan, then you would think that every shot landed clean and it was the most devastating strike ever.
Shogun spent more time waiting on Machida than he did pushing the pace. He took patience too far, he should have tried to win decisively. Let it go to the judges and you put yourself in that position. At least we know there will be a rematch.

by KS on Oct 25, 2009 3:00 AM EDT reply actions

Machida didn’t push the pace either. His game is to sit back and counter and Rua knew that, that’s why he wasn’t bull rushing him. I understand that you don’t want it to go to the judges because anything can happen, but I thought Rua could have stayed back the entire 5th round and still took it. Maybe they should have went to sudden victory…

by MwM on Oct 25, 2009 3:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Shogun destroyed his body, and with it his movement. Lyoto looked injured by the end of the 2nd round and at any moment seemed like he could have crumbled under those powerful kicks to the ribs and legs. But he didn’t. Machida has the heart of a champion and the belt of one. Although he has lost his untouchable image for sure.

Shogun was back tonight. How much ass did he kick? Seriously, this guy needs a rematch without any b.s. or I am never paying for a UFC ppv again. It’s so easy just to read about them round for round, or watch for free on here. The UFC puts on good shows with great fighters, but apparently intrudes on scorecards so the decision favors fighters they’re more committed to market at the time. Whatever.

Hope to see Shogun in Strikeforce with Fedor, that way if he gets robbed at least I didn’t too. Support competition amongst MMA promotion so the UFC doesn’t get away with this kind of shit…screwing over great fighter. WATCH FREE ON CBS, NOVEMBER 7th.

matt hammill is a way worse robbery than this fight…. all these people on here saying shogun got “robbed” tell me who you were betting on before the fight… that’s right machida. You end up rooting for the underdog and get so emotional about it that you forget to voice your own opinion. Machida was the only one to definitively win a round (3), giving him the edge in the 4 coin flip rounds. Ben rothwell should of told you, leg kicks don’t win you fights, octagon control, effectiveness, elusiveness ,accuracy, and damage all play a factor. Shogun whiffed terribly on at least 7 leg kicks that turned his body all the way around and putting his back to machida. At most you could call this fight a draw but to say u deserve the title on a split decision(which would of been rua’s only option) is ridiculous. If you want the belt so badly don’t coast into the last round and expect to win. There will be a rematch and machida shall slay shogun and many of you need to understand your opinions will never matter in the outcome of a fight. Do you blow your wad when refs make bad calls to end games in baseball postseason….NO….how about when they cost your favorite football team games NO…. but for some reason you think by bitching on here and bitching to anyone who has five minutes to entertain you, you think it will accomplish something… HOW ABOUT YOU SAY CONGRATS FOR PUTTING ON A FUCKING GOOD SHOW!!!! and not involve yourself in the outcome of fights… JACKASSES

by derreckla@hotmail.com on Oct 25, 2009 3:56 AM EDT reply actions

The UFC isn’t “fixed” at all. The UFC has nothing to do with the athletic commission, the refs, or the judges at all. The only ones responsible for this ordeal most defiantly are the judges, and some can argue the fighters for “not doing enough” or “making it a convincing win”. even though i agree Rua was robbed and deserves that belt around his waste. but in the end the judges scored the fight, and made the decision on who won the fight by there “professional” judgement. So those who r hollering about the UFC being fixed and Dana White needs to fix this situation and it’s Dana’s fault, need to come to the understanding that the UFC has nothing to do with judging and neither does Dana White, and there is nothing that can b done about this, besides the fighters finishing the fights so this type of shit doesn’t happen. And to those who say they will never purchase a UFC pay per view again, come on like I already said its not the UFC’s fault why take it out on them and not support the sport that we all love? Support the UFC just not the judges and Athletic commission, even know they are the same.

Having re-watched the fight, I can see how the judges could give the win to Machida: he landed the bigger strikes (mostly the knees to the body), he stuffed all the takedowns, he made Rua miss big on several occasions, and appeared more aggressive in the exchanges when both men engaged in close combat. Razor thin, and no doubt worthy of skepticism, but in the end, I beliieve those are the reasons Machida came away victorious. I do however hope that the UFC decides to do an automatic re-match, because I would love to see those two run it back one more time!

by Joey on Oct 25, 2009 5:21 AM EDT reply actions

I haven’t read through ALL the comments here but I thought it was a pretty close fight – the main difference for me was the totally biased commentary from Rogan – Every single time I saw Machida fly in with a flurry of shots all I heard from Rogan was about what a great counter Shogun just did. That alone will be enough to swing many viewers opinions on the fight.

For me – close fight, Shogun probably edged it but as in most combat sports that isn’t always enough against the champ. Watch it without the commentary for a proper view, Machida definitely did his fair share.

by shonuff on Oct 25, 2009 6:24 AM EDT reply actions

Well the rounds were “close”. They were close because Machida has great defense. So even though his offense wasn’t as good as Shogun’s he wins due to the imaginary “champions advantage” rule that some people keep citing.

Isn’t awesome that a champion can keep their belt by defending attacks really well?

by can u say paid result? on Oct 25, 2009 9:08 AM EDT reply actions

Shogun put forth a brilliant strategy. He executed his gameplan to a tee. With leg kicks and body kicks, and everytime Machida came at him, he threw a body knee to keep the distance. You can see his gameplan was executed well because by the third round Machida had no legs and kept switching stances and could barely move. Machida was gassed too after the third round. Rua was sharp the entire fight.

I don’t get how this strategy differs from say GSP’s strategy of taking someone down to score points and pull out a win. The only difference is that Rua used leg kicks and body kicks instead and it was overwhelming.

This was a good strategy that Rua employed and I don’t think Rua should change it because it worked perfectly. What do you expect someone to do, throw himself to the opponent’s fists? Do leg kicks and body kicks not matter anymore? Even the exchanges where Machida got some licks in. Shogun still tagged Machida and countered well. So It’s hard to see anything that would give the edge to Machida.

It’s a little early for Halloween but those judges had their fake masks on cuz that was not real MMA judging out there. It’s like some random Machida fans were disguised as judges. What a sack of bs..

by remedy on Oct 25, 2009 9:30 AM EDT reply actions

You have to feel bad for Shogun knowing that in the rematch Machida will work on avoiding leg kicks much more and having already beaten Machida in his mind and everyone else’s except those 3 judges Shogun will feel like his heart has been ripped out. When Buffer said Machida even Machida himself look bemused. He had a resigned look in his face. That says it all. Shogun landed 50 hard kicks, whilst Machida only had 1 or 2 good moments on average per round. Not enough to win the fight.

by Shogun Got Screwed on Oct 25, 2009 9:31 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know how you guys think it was fixed. I think Shogun is a more popular fighter and UFC would love to have him at the champ. This undefeated, dance around and avoid contact fight crap from Machida is lame and boring. Yeah, it’s a sport, but it’s entertainment. The base on which judges judge….striking, control of the octogon, control of your opponent…. Machinda landed 2 GOOD strikes, the rest was Karate Sport fighting. Shogun landed solid kick after kick. I’m not siding with either but the average guy would say Shogun did more damage.

Fight was close, don’t leave it to the judges. Only way to avoid this is to dominate your opponent and stop the fight. Neither did that. The rest is history and part of combat sports. Been happening for years and people speculate for years.

I doubt you’ll see an immediate rematch. PPV sales would suck.

I think if you really break down the fight using replays, you’ll note that 9 out of 10 times Shogun threw the body kick he got punched in the face with a left hand. Machida was purposely taking the body shots so he could counter to the head.

Machida OCCASIONALLY countered Machida, but Machida threw an effective counter 9 out of 10 times. Machida landed a higher percentage of strikes as well as a higher number of strikes.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the Ultimate Body Kick Championship. When the big exchanges occured, it was Machida winning them, plain and simple.

Dude, you’re smoking crack. Look at the actual numbers. Shogun landed MORE strikes (twice as many in fact), more power strikes, and a considerably HIGHER PERCENTAGE of his strikes. Machida was throwing more, but only landing 21% of those head shots. Shogun beat him in every measurable way!!! Here are the numbers again, since you obviously didn’t read them above:

STRIKES:

Total: High Power:
Machida 42 38
Shogun 82 80

Shogun landed more strikes (at higher percentages) in EVERY SINGLE ROUND! (eat that JeremyJackoff!)

and for those who say Shogun did nothing but leg kicks or that he lost the punching game:

Head Strikes:
Machida 14 (of 65 attemps, 21%) now who’s “elusive”!
Shogun 17 (of 48 attempts 35%) IOW higher accuracy!

your wrong, and you say machida landed the harder strikes? look who had the most damage it was machida and the numbners are in he got out struck every round.

Machida could have finished the fight three separate times where he had Shogun against the cage. He just failed to pull the trigger. Shogun was never in a position to finish the fight. Plain and simple. If anything it should have been a draw.

Come on guys! How can you expect DETHRONING A CHAMPION only by kicking him in the leg and not even having him limb or fall or knocked down…

when I talk about dethroning a champ, I understand what lyoto did to rashad, st. pierre to hughes etc.

it is not champ’s responsibility to bring it, it is the challenger’s responsibility – to prove himself that he EARNED it and leaving no doubt..

even GSP became boring after winning the belt.. think about it, he became a wrestler.. no knockout or submission ever since.. why? because he is defending..

IMO shogun did not earn it.. machida is still the champ…

Go back to boxing dude!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you even watch the fight? There is no way this could not have been a 5 round UD for ShoGun!!!!!!!

In that case, they should just throw the whole point system out the window and go by whether the challanger knocks out the champ or not. If he knocks the champ then he’s the new champ but if he doesn’t then he loses.

That’s really bias judging and not fair MMA judging at any level. If you just want to watch someone get knocked out then that’s what you have street fights for. A challenger cannot always knock out the champ. It just doesn’t always happen that way. MMA is very technical and strategical and should be always viewed as that. It’s about coming with a brilliant gameplan and sticking to it like any professional sport. It shouldn’t be based on flair for the dramatic like knockouts all the time. That is not real MMA.

Sadly, the judges have forgotten the real MMA and are getting swayed by fans that want to see exciting fights instead of brilliant strategies like that one put on by Rua last night. Ask the great trainers and I’m pretty sure they would tell you that Rua’s gameplan was the way to go last night.

The whole 5 rounds I kept saying Rua has to beat the champ to be the champ. When Forrest beat Rampage everyone was up in arms thinking Rampage won and not Forrest, and Forrest clearly did more damage to Rampage and had him in far more trouble than Rua ever did to Machida. Seems to me the naysayers are just talking to hear themselves talk.

The problem here (assuming the judges weren’t paid off by bookies) is that once judges are convinced that a particular fighter is unbeatable, it’s very hard for them to see a fight objectively. They will inevitably give the benefit of any doubt to the fighter they assumed was unbeatable.

WOW
WORST FITE
KARATE SUCKS
 MACHIDA WON

by ...GCF on Oct 25, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

look they were some nice leg kicks but they didnt win him the fight. Rampage losing to forrest is death by leg kicks this was just a suprise because we haven’t seen machida get hit yet. Machida handled them like a true champ and took his opportunities almost finishing shogun a few times. There was not a single point in the fight where machida was in danger or even being dominated, end of story. I was amazed at the effort that shogun put in but he truly didnt win. If anything I say scrap that fight and have a rematch

by realdeal on Oct 25, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

your crazy.First off Shogun was NEVER in trouble.Second Shogun took the center of the cage.Third control the pace of the fight. And fourth,he whipped Machida’s azz for 25 minutes.

Anybody who thought Machida won that fight is retarded. All he did the entire fight was run away while getting hit. That fight makes me not want to watch mma again.

by Shocked at that fight on Oct 25, 2009 7:01 PM EDT reply actions

I scored the fight 3-2 Machida. I watched it first without audio and with audio and the commentary was quite bad. No wonder everybody is shouting robbery…
