been there, bet that! But I put Machida on a parlay!

by john G on Oct 22, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

john i think thiago silva vs shogun would be the best fight of all time, and honestly i don’t see how you give shogun so much of an edge

i think clinching with machida or taking him down are about impossible, and i doubt clinching him would do much for shogun because machida trains with anderson silva he probably has a great defense to the thai plum,

the only guy on the planet that can beat machida is himself and he won’t he’s o big, strong and fast to lose

after this i wanna see shogun vs thiago silva
machida vs himself
and dana white vs dan henderson in a contract negotiation

thats the smartest thing youve said john, even an idiot like you realizes this is going to be a mismatch. machida by destruction

Thiis fight will be the second coming of Rogerio Nogueira vs. Shogun in the 2005 GP, which happens to be easily 1 of my top 5 mma fights of all time. Anything can happen in this fight.

Standing: advantage Machida (1 of the top mma strikers)
Clinch: Advantage Shogun (best tai clinch in all of mma)
Ju jItsu: advantage Shogun (best Jits out of all the LHW in the world)

Makes for 1 helluva title fight! This fight will go into the championships rounds. Curious to see if Machida can handle being hit. He wont be walking away with the title unscathed!

by john G on Oct 22, 2009 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

honestly if machida walks out unscratched in this fight which is unlikely but possible he wont be touched by any light heavy weight any time soon. im taking shogun in this fight by brutal g-n-p- stoppage early in the second. i think that shogun will land a punch or two before he realizes hell need to take the fight to the ground. from there hell get the takedown and work his fierce ground game. my prediction

by Jared on Oct 22, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

That fight was awesome because Lil Nog has an awesome chin but no massive KO power. Neither one of them had the ability to finish the other. The sloppy vs technical aspects of each other meshed very well. Here though i think Machida takes him out clean with not much action. Shogun has said he’ll be looking to time Chida. That’s like when Evans tried to counter him. Just won’t work. As much as i love shogun, this fight won’t be kind to him.

Also john, i gotta mention that Machida’s BJJ is legit. All you have to do is watch him in competition with BJJ world champ Lovato Jr. I don’t think Shogun can hustle him on the ground though he did almost sub Arona.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 23, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

im not sure if Machida and Shogun can finish each other either! like I said, I want this fight to go to the championship rounds!

I know Machida’s JIts is legit. Hell. my boy PhilQny has grappled with him back when Machida was “boring” and I always remembered how PhilQny RAVED about his grappling game, but I think Shogun’s jits is better then everyone. Shogun out grappled Rogerio who is one of Machida’s Jits coaches. I dont expect Shogun to submit him, but i can see him using jits to get some nice G n P in!

Like I said before, Machida is the favorite for a reason…but I wont be surprised if he loses either. All it takes is 2 seconds of the tai plumb and 1 knee landing flush on the chin, and the fight could turn around in an instant!

by john G on Oct 23, 2009 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree that is could turn around in an instant. Thats for sure. I just have to go with Machida. I see him working Rua to a tko victory, but Rua always has a chance.

I really hope you’re right John. I’ve been really looking forward to this since it was announced. Hopefully we don’t get a flash KO in the opening minute or two.

I pray that it goes to the championship rounds. I actually want them to fight to a competitive decision! Thats how great I expect this fight to be. Not to often that I dont want to see a fight finished, but this is one of those times!

Exactly.

by RobH86 on Oct 22, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

This fight may make it to the championship rounds, but the longer it goes, the more it will favor Machida. While I expect Shogun to show reasonably well, the stamina question still remains.

by CL on Oct 22, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly when have you seen Shogun show us anything in the cage? Never. He will be finished in the 2nd round. You believe the UFC hype on this fight, but you know Machida dominates and this is over relatively quickly.

by slim473 on Oct 22, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Shogun has done nothing in his UFC career to suggest he will even make it competitive. Stop living in the past. Machida is the future.

by BNF on Oct 22, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Rua in the Championship rounds may get really ugly. Did anyone happen to notice Rua at then end of 3 rounds with Coleman? Both of the those fighters going into the 3rd barely had anything left. I don’t see being able to bounce back in a year and put together five good rounds. Machida is going to counter everytime Rua goes for one of those big looping punches, like he does in every fight. Just as anyone goes offensive with him, boom they get tagged. He has been doing that since he was a child, text book karate tournament striking. MAchida is insanly quick and super confident at striking during that fraction of a second-That is going to be the deal sealer-with Rua’s looping strikes. Straight line is the quickest way to cover distance. I am thinking second round victory for MAchida. Round one feeling out and getting down his timing. Round 2, Ding “LEts Get it On!”, Good Night, God Bless, The Draygon is still da champyon…

This is the biggest fight of Shogun’s life and this kid is BIGTIME. When I say Bigtime, I mean he rises to the occasion in Big fights! I willl be shocked if his cardio isnt in peak form. shogun has known about this fight forever, and Cardio is the easiest thing to correct in mma. All it takes is work. Shogun was a cardio machine in the past, so why cant he do it again, especially now that his legs are healthy?

I shogun was 36 years old, I would think its foolish to expect him to go back to his pride form. But he is a 27 year old kid which to me, means that he is fully capable of becoming better then he was in Pride. I am baffled as to how so many people wrote him off and think he cant come into a fight with great cardio. I honesty believe that their is a direct correlatioon between his weak cardio and his knee problems. No more knee problems should equate to the cardio machine he was in the past. what drives me crazy is when people say he peaked in pride. HE is ONLY 27 years old. YOur fighting Prime isnt til you turn 31. He is stil 4 years away from his fighhting Prime, and people say he is done!

Win or lose, the shogun bandwagon is going to fill up really quick after this fight. He will be impressive and in the future he will beat many of the UFC’s top LHW!…but I REMEMBER ALL THE ONES WHO FLAMED HIM AND WROTE HIM OFF! I got no problems with anyone picking against Shogun. If my life depended on it, I would bet Machida, but I wont be shocked no matter how this fight ends. Both men are more then capable of beating any LHW in the world! I love both fighters so I will be happy no matter what. This is a dream fight for me because no possible outcome would surprise me and no matter how this fight ends, I truly believe that the winner will be THE FANS! on paper there isnt many fights that appeal to me more then this match up! DREAM fight for me and I pray that I get to see Shogun/Anderson in the future!

Good stuff John, and I hope you are right that Shogun will be in peak form. I hope Machida is tested in this fight, as I believe there are facets of his overall game we have not seen yet. Stamina issues aside, I believe Shogun will need to gain an advantage early if he is to win. If the first round or two play out as a tactical striking battle, Machida has too clear cut an edge, and likely will have picked Shogun apart. Point being, even if this fight makes it to round 4, we’ll know who is in control no later than round two.

by CL on Oct 23, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

JOHN G is an idiot, shogun bandwagon is not going to fill up after this fight, because he is going to make shogun look like he did to rashad. stop dreaming john, this is a classic mismatch, even rashad evans would beat shogun.

by john G on Oct 23, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

John G. I hope you didn’t think I was writing of Shogun. He actually is one of my favorite fighters, like I have said before I had expected him to get to the UFC and clean out th3 205 division. You almost always have an intelligent post. I just Rua has not really or barely shown glimmers of his formerself. Him getting back into his Pride form is not just going to happen in one fight. It will be a progression. Unfortunatly for Rua, Machida is near the pinnacle of his mma progress. He finally has gotten comfortable in the cage using karate. His abilties are peak and he has made excellent, ranked fighters look amatuer as of late. I hope like you stated we get the fight of the year out of this, but I just think Rua is going to fall short.

Thanks John for always posting great assesments. Along with NNR and a few others that slip my mind at the moment, I really enjoy coming to this site. I have been here since the UFCMania days and there are still those old timers and educated fans that always make great posts and make me come back day in and day out…

How many times has the ‘second coming’ of Shogun been promised?

He has good knees, but good luck getting Machida in a clinch, let’s be honest, clinch is irelevant because it’s never going to come into play.

I’ve haven’t seen him pull off any take downs lately, only be taken down.
His bjj is good, best in the world at lhw is clearly hyperbole.

I think at 4-1 he’s a good dog, but even money says this is easily Machidas fight.

First of all Machida is THE best striker in MMA… secondly, you cant possibly think a guy that got subbed by Forrest Griffin has the bewst BJJ ay LHW in the world!! Thats ridiculous… in this fight BJJ is a wash.

striking – machida
clinch – shogun, but NO WAY does he get machida in a clinch
bjj – tie

Shogun is clearly staring at that belt!!! he wants it soo bad and i can’t wait until he has it!!

perfect assessment John with the whole stand-up/clinch/JJ. I would take it one step further and say Shogun has the much better ground and pound as i have yet to see Machida really pound someone out. (other than the one punch to Thiago but he’s got no defense so whatever).

WAR SHOGUNNN!!! i was at his last fight and he did not disapoint!!!! especially when all those non informed kids were going for Chuck telling me Shogun was a no-name that was going to get knocked out. Shogun fockin showed them and he’ll do it again!!

by Blunt N' Beer on Oct 22, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

you don’t look an opponent in the eye as a sign of disrespect and to show you aren’t scared, it’s kind of like a dog if you look it in the eyes it’s going to attack, but if you don’t it feels you are superior.. shogun has NO chance in this fight, HE LOOKED LIKE SHIT against chuck, looked worse against mark coleman, and got his ass absolutely handed to him by forrest, i understand john picking shogun because he’s been on his nuts since i can remember but you other homos need to jump off that bandwagon and realize machida is unbeatable

by randy murders on Oct 23, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

this coming from a JT money fan lol
get real buddy 2 major re-constructive knee surgeries can explain the forrest and coleman fights. As for the chuck fight…no idea what your talking about there, you just sound like a Shogun hater as much as you’re a Machida nut hugger.

give your head a shake, Shogun clearly has a chance in this fight. If he can get Machida in the clinch and deliver some world class knees it will create some problems for Machida’s un-tested chin. Also, if Shogun manages to get Machida down, that will open up some opportunites for Shogun with his unreal BJJ (which is put about Machida’s) and his ground and pound.
Arguing against that is just pointless because there is no way to dispute it. Saying Shogun is washed-up is ridiculous, the guy is 4 years younger than Machida, the surgeries just set him back a bit. I hope Shogun crushes Machida and shuts all the nut huggers up. JMO

by Blunt N' Beer on Oct 23, 2009 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I love how people say Shoogun has NO CHANCE! All it takes is 1 second of the Tai clinch, and 1 knee landing Flush on the chin, and the fight could change in an instant! Everyone knows how great Machida is, but I feel that shogun is a WORLD CLASS fighter, and all world class fighters are capable of winning on any given night no matter how outmatched they are on paper. What happens if this fight turns into a wAR? do you really think that the least hit fighter in mma would have an advantage over a battle tested warrior if it turns into a war? I dont! anyone ever see Machida fight for 25 minutes? I havent….but Shogun has gone 20 minutes against world class fighhters in the past and came out with the W.

I wont say with certainty that anyone will ever beat Machida…all Im saying is that a shogun win isnt anywhere near as far fetched as most of you think it would be! Especially in mma!

by john G on Oct 23, 2009 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

i like how you say all it takes is one clinch one takedown one flush punch…….you’d think if it was that easy perhaps just maybe sometime in machidas 15 pro fights this would have happened already! machida is 7-0 in the ufc , has never lost a round, and WILL pick rua apart tomorrow night mark my words on this one boys

by TheDragon on Oct 23, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Why is everyone that is going for Machida a nut-hugger? I am a fan of both men (Machida before he got to the UFC) and was so hoping that Rua was going to come to the UFC and be the fighter he was in Pride, but at the moment he is not. Chuck was his best showing and that is not saying much considering he has lost 3 of 4 before facing Rua and 2 of them were brutal ko’s. Nothing in his last few performances show that he was the dominant fighter of Pride, improved yes, but not the PRide Rua.

How do you figure you can’t dispute the ground game? I am just curious because of the 5 guys considered BJJ men that Rua fought Arona, Babalu, Forrest, Little Nog, NAmkawe(maybe you can throw Santos in there, but I do not think he is on the same level fighting as alot of his other fights)…He has lost 2 of them. I am just trying to think of his fights, so maybe I am off but just trying to go by memory. Then he has only one win by submission, Randelman. MAchida has 2 sub vitories, one of them being a relevant fighter in Sokoudujo.

I know Machida’s chin is largely untested and that is what makes him that much better of a fighter, because it is never there to hit, but Both Rashad and Soku landed a few shots each (and RAshad’s were 2 or 3 big ones on the button) and he was unphased and continued forward. Also everyone speaks of Rua’s Tai Plum, MAchida does train with Anderson who doesn’t exactly lack in the Tai Plum. Machida has amazing knees from outside of clinch and heavy foot sweeps(completely unrivaled). I got Machida winning this one but notbody cares waht I think anyway…

shogun/anderson…DUH!!!!

by john G on Oct 22, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be a sick fight but apparently Andy has no interest in challenging for the belt regardless of the result, as he doesn’t want to fight Machida or prevent him from getting another title shot if he gets upset in this fight. The only belt Andy cares about is the MW title, he’s only interested in fighting in LHW and HW superfights to prove himself, he won’t stop his close friends Machida or Big Nog from holding either belt.

No surprise that I’m picking Machida, this fight came too soon for Shogun to be the killer that he once was at LHW. A good performance over a finished Liddell isn’t going to convince me that his TDD and cardio have improved. Machida will frustrate Shogun like he frustrates everyone and he will pick him apart with body kicks and generally outworking him in the early rounds, tiring Shogun out before finishing with a flurry of punches in the third. Shogun will have to give the performance of his life to beat Machida and I just don’t see it happening, if he wins then I’ll be the first to admit that I was wrong and congratulate Rua for pulling off a huge upset but I don’t see anyone at LHW beating Lyoto at this time.

by mmafighter11 on Oct 22, 2009 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

Of course he’s not afraid. It’s Shogun after all. Yeah it’s definitely a respect thing like Fedor. I’m just hoping that’s not where the similarity ends. Hopefully Mauricio performs like him. In that case we’ve got a cracker on our hands.

by RobH86 on Oct 22, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

ITS NOT A RESPECT THING. If u even fought competively you would know that by looking an opponent in the eye u have let him in to read you through the eyes. Fear as intimidation can be detected. If u dont look him in the eye he has no clue if he has you mentally or not.

by zack on Oct 22, 2009 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok fair enough suppose it’s a mental guard thing. Mauro Ranello said Fedor does it when he bears no bad feeling to his opponent or something along those lines so I thought maybe it’s something similar. I don’t fight so you’re right I wouldn’t know. Must admit though I do think it’s strange not looking your opponent in the eye. It seems kind of unnatural.

by RobH86 on Oct 23, 2009 6:58 AM EDT up reply actions

zack: exactly…to add to that, Fighters like shoguun and Fedor dont look into their opponents eyes because they believe it exerts unnecessary energy. Fighters like Shogun and fedor believe that it doesnt matter what their opponents do, they are confident in their abilities and focus on what they must do. It has NOTHING to do with respect or Fear…Its clearing their mind. its a focus thing!

Lets break it down with career wins over the current top ten LWs. (used sherdog for list. Yes everyone hates their rankings but I had to use something.)

Shogun: Nogueira via decision (ranked 9th)
        Jackson KO (ranked 2nd).
Both wins happened in 2005.

Machida: Evans via KO (ranked 3rd)
Thiago Silva via KO (ranked 6th)
         Frankilin via TKO (ranked 10th).
The wins over Evans and Silva were his last 2 fights.

No picks here just facts.

Randy Couture! The next light heavyweight champ! Mark my words!

Machida wins another easy fight and will stay undefeated. Sorry to disappoint Shogun fans, but Machida is just to good!

I agree! Shogun has nothing for Machida! Randy Couture has the key to beat Machida! Clinch, and ground and pound!

by charlie on Oct 23, 2009 1:32 AM EDT reply actions

Sorry, I like Couture but Machida would beat him easy. Machida is just to fast and to technical for anyone at 205! I don’t think anyone has ever made Machida really even break a sweet. This guy picks apart everyone and make other fighter look slow! Look how easy he beat Rashard and Tito when he was in his prime. I really don’t see anyone challenging Machida and Saturday night everyone will see why this guy is undefeated!

I hope they get to the titleship rounds, but they wont Machida wins by KO in the first

by Rebel664 on Oct 23, 2009 1:44 AM EDT reply actions

Titleship? Is that you Tito? Joking aside, I really hope it goes that far. There’s nothing more unsatisfying than a well hyped championship fight ending inside a minute or two…except in the case of Lyoto Rashad. That was fantastic.

Kinda looks like Shogun is looking at the belt and ignoring Machida.

by Khaos_Warrior on Oct 23, 2009 2:15 AM EDT reply actions

i think chuck could beat machida. styles make fights. assuming chuck can take a punch again. i also think randy could give machida trouble.

Typical situation here where people have forgotten how good Machida is. He’s going to win, easily. Same thing happening with Lesnar. People actually believing Carwin has a chance.

The UFC hype machine always sells it as being close to draw in the viewers. I don’t think Shogun has no chance though. 70-30 in Machida’s favour I’d say so I’m going to go with a UD for the Dragon.

Shogun has this one – people seem to have a short memory!!!

True, a lot of people have forgotten what he did FOUR YEARS AGO.

Damn Dana! Lay off the KFC and Krispy Kremes

Machida will hardly get hit. His concentration and momentary time distortion is so strong that it is only rivaled by Anderson Silva.

I love Shogun and I had some of the greatest time watching him in Pride, but he is world’s away from Machida’s skill set. Shogun will be out of his game by late round 1 and it will be over in rounds 2 or 3. This will not go into the championship rounds.

This new breed of fighters will dominate MMA for some time to come. Machida is a manifestation warrior.
