Ricardo Almeida injured; UFC 106 fight against Jon Fitch canceled for Nov. 21

...according to Fitch, who just released the news through several of his social networking accounts:

"My fight on Nov. 21st is off, Almeida blew out his knee, but I get a bigger better fight instead. Cant say who yet, but lots of you have been waiting for this fight a long time."

When contacted by MMAmania.com, Fitch was unable to reveal his new opponent, but did say his fight would be shifted to a later date against "A huge opponent."

Let the speculation begin.

rematch with alves? or is he fighting hughes?

by randy murders on Oct 22, 2009 12:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How about GSP? GSPs own words were Fitch was his toughest fight.

by Beaver on Oct 22, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i heard he’s fighting kos.~

by stinky~fingers on Oct 22, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if your serious stink that would be awesome. it would also make sense because “lots of us have been waiting for this a long time” as fitch put it. And it would finally put an end to the whole AKA teammates not fighting each other, its nonsense.

by Blunt N' Beer on Oct 22, 2009 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully it’s an Alves rematch. My boy Thiago would KO him for sure. GSP is gettin winner of swick-daley for sure.

“huge’ mans a rematch with alves. makes alot of sense too since alves went on such a tear after fitch destroyed him.

by j.b. on Oct 22, 2009 4:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

plus hughes already turned down kos and swick, saying he didn’t want to fight anymore young guns. why would he fight fitch?

by j.b. on Oct 22, 2009 4:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it will be Hughes. Hughes would get KO’d by Swick or Kos but he can probably use his wrestling to stay in the fight for 3 rounds if he fights Fitch so I could see him taking this one.

I mean how many people can Hughes duck before he agrees to fight someone. This is the likely fight for me.

by Ca$z on Oct 22, 2009 6:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can’t believe that some people are suggesting GSP?!?

Are you kidding me? That was one of the most one sided beatdowns that I can remember.

It was more dominant than say a quick knockout a la Belfort Franklin. GSP won practically every second of that 25 minute fight as opposed to one punch changing the outcome.

Its blatantly Hughes, and quite an interesting fight to boot.

by Nick J on Oct 22, 2009 6:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fitch’s website said the fight was being pushed back and that he getting a HUGE fight… sounds like he’ll be facing Hughes.

I don’t see the point in this one. When he beats Hughes no one will care and if he gets beat then it’s a huge step up for Hughes…

by Arnold on Oct 22, 2009 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unless he fights Alves there is no scenario that I will enjoy. I was actually really looking forward to seeing him fight cocharaho in his welterweight debut. That would have been a sick ground war…If he thinks Fitch/Hughes excites me, then he has lost his damn mind!

Only fights that interest me the least bit involving Fitch are:
Kos (wont happen)
Alves
almeida

dont really care to see him fight anyone else, unless they sign Galvao!

I actually want to see Fitch fill out move up to Middleweight!

by john G on Oct 22, 2009 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He would definitely have a big edge in wrestling seeing how that division is lacking that style. But then his size advantage goes away and a lot more potent strikers. Definitely interesting though. I would like em to pull T from the paulo t fight so that paulo can fight a martin kampmann/Jake Ellenberger or someone slightly easier.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 22, 2009 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah thats a good point John, I think he couldn bulk up easily. I remember reading before he got into MMA he was a body builder and weighed 230+ so it doesn’t seem as if it would be hard for him to move up.

He is sort of in the Rich Franklin situation as I don’t think anyone gives him a shot at GSP so why not move up? That way he won’t have all his AKA buddies in the way either.

Likewise I was really looking forward to seeing The Big Dog at 170, i think he can make waves in that division as no one has a better ground game.

Plus with the improved size advantage he can get it to the mat easier at 170.

Would like to see Almeida vs Serra. Would be a sick exibition.

by Nick J on Oct 22, 2009 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wasn’t that keen on Fitch-Almeida as most Fitch-BJJ specialist fights end up with Jon on top defending against submissions for 15 minutes and we’ve just seen that style of fight at 100 and it wasn’t particularly exciting.

Hopefully Fitch fights one of Alves, Kos or Hughes as an Alves rematch would make a clear cut contender out of GSP’s past opponents, Kos and Fitch are both have a similar skill set and are at the same level ranking wise so an AKA teammate fight would be sick and again establish a worthy opponent for a GSP rematch while Hughes has been ducking AKA for long enough.

by David W-S on Oct 22, 2009 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nick J: As soon as I heard that the Big Dog was moving down t o welterweight, I thought of Almeida/Serra but then I realized that they are 2 of Renzo Gracie’s top students, so I really dont see them ever fighting, but like you said it would provide some sick Grappling!

Big Dog at 170 is very interesting. He was throwing Kendall around like a RAG DOLL, AND kENDAL HAS SOME solid takedown defense and was a much bigger Middleweight.

Fitch should move up and fight Maia. See if he can nuetralize Maia’s Jits! good luck with that Fitch!

NNR: I am posting a lot of posts directed at you in the sHOGUN TRAINING VIDEO THREAD!

Kos already has a fight booked, he’s not fighting him. Its probably Hughes, not that anyone is actually interested in that fight except the guys from AKA. Is it just me or do those guys duck more fighters than Tito Ortiz? just sayin

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Oct 22, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The last fight I ever want to see is Fitch/Hughes. In terms of mma, that match up BLOWS! Only apealing thing abut a HUghes fighht is seeing him get his ass kicked!

Those aka guys duck everyone, but I cant say that about Fitch…He fights anyone, I will give him that!

by john G on Oct 22, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would like to see Fitch fight either a motivated Matt Hughes or underrated Brock Larson. He and his camp have been taunting Hughes at every turn so I think that could be a great fight if Hughes gets serious about it. Despite his poor performance in his last fight I like Larson a lot. I think Fitch would win that fight but Larson has mad wrestling skills and it could be a great fight. I think Hughes needs to fight someone from the Fitch camp just to at least attempt to shut them up and i think if he is motivated and brings in the right camp he can beat any of them including Fitch.

by RamJ on Oct 22, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It sounds like Alves or Matt…

Im thinking Hughes – cant recall exactly but I do recall Matt signing a multi fight deal with a high number of fights… was it 7? or am i dreaming?

anyway if im right Hughes HAS to start working that off sooner than later.

I think they might want to rematch Alves with GSP – just a hunch – so giving him Fitch is a bad idea

by Big Zino on Oct 22, 2009 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They made him sign a multi fight deal but it is very doubtful he will fulfill that. It just means that he will always fight for the UFC.

by Ca$z on Oct 22, 2009 6:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You guys have to realize that he is posting this for his fans. This wasn’t a mania interview it was a post on his Myspace/Facebook/Twitter. He and his fans have not been waiting a long time for an Alves rematch. In the eyes of Fitch fans, that beatdown already happened. The only ones excited for that are Alves fans. Hughes may be irrelevant to you, but to fighters in that division he’s a legend. Hughes makes sense. So does Kos as he has been a staple in that division and he is one of the few top guys Fitch hasn’t fought yet.

by wAyNe on Oct 22, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also not sure if you have noticed; but, the UFC doesn’t seem too keen on rematches as of late. Especially considering it would be a rematch to decide who is in line to rematch GSP. Dana and his followers want new fights.

Probably against Hughes. Now all these tools are probably jizzing all over each other that one of them got Hughes since they are bitches that want to stack a division with guys in their own camp but are too pussy to fight each other, only injure each other and keep each other out of fights.
I bet they give each other high fives for like 2 hours and do jager bombs over a Hughes fight announcement.

Hasn’t Severn retired? I know you’re taking the piss but I’ve not heard about the Beast in a while, he said in an interview that he was fighting for one more year and looking to avenge as many losses as possible but I’ve not heard anything since so I presume he’s done fighting now.

by David W-S on Oct 22, 2009 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Def is not GSP , no reason to use GSP when you already have Lesnar/Carwin in main event and Tito/Forrest, thats just the business aspect of it…

I would think not Hughes either because I think Hughes could still co main event a card…

I think Alves is the likely guy, especially since it could push either guy closer to a rematch with GSP.

I doubt people lots of people would be waiting for a Semtex or Hitman showdown with Fitch.

by Rob on Oct 22, 2009 12:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the fight as fitch said it would be pushed back to another card… it wont be at 106 by the sound of it.

Thiago Alves im guessing and if that is the case then round one TKO/KO for Thiago.

by Khaos_Warrior on Oct 22, 2009 12:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

GSP couldnt finish Fitch… no way Thiago does.

by FightFan on Oct 22, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah well, GSP couldn’t finish Karo, but Alves did

Your argument doesn’t work since MMA math doesn’t work.

by jj on Oct 22, 2009 6:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah according to MMA math – Fitch KO’d Alves the 1st time so he should be able to KO him again…

by Arnold on Oct 22, 2009 7:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only problem I have with a Fitch Alves fight is the winner of that fight should have a title shot but Alves wouldn’t get that opportunity with just coming off a loss to GSP and my mma math tells me Alves will win.

by Puck Head on Oct 22, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Watch the first fight again, he may have improved but he did get destroyed and it seems hard to imagine fitch losing this 1.

Thiago Alves… We’ve all been wanting to see it… Gsp isn’t fighting for a while…

by Nini on Oct 22, 2009 1:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

John Fitch fans have not been wanting this match. Just as A.Silva fans have not been wanting Hendo/Spider 2. I could go on. You are an Alves fan and so have been waiting for this match eargerly because you want him to avenge his loss. If Alves throws together a few wins and becomes number 1 contender again, then Fitch fans might have some interest. But not now. Fitch posted this for his fans so it will a top guy he hasn’t fought yet like Kos or a legend like Hughes. Fitch is already ranked number two in that division. There is no fight at 170 that will move him up. A rematch with Alves is a lose/lose for Fitch.

by wAyNe on Oct 22, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And, Alves is booked for 107. So that would push Fitch’s next fight from November to who knows when in 2010. Not gonna happen.

by wAyNe on Oct 22, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It probably won’t be Alves because of 1) timing and 2) it would set up the winner for another title shot and I think it’s too quick for both of them.

But you can’t assume that Alves fans only want to see that rematch. I would love to see Alves v Fitch II simply because you’d be able to see the #1 and #2 contenders in that division fight.

Plus, the fact that there is no fight at 170 that will move him up the rankings doesn’t really matter. Does that mean he gets to keep fighting GSP every couple of months? Does that mean he won’t ever accept a fight unless it’s over an old-school legend or a teammate? I get what you’re trying to say, but I don’t agree with the logic to it. He gets paid by fighting and, unless DW agrees to have him fight GSP 3 times a year, he’s going to fight people ranked beneath him regardless of their status as a legend.

Fitch should look into pulling a Franklin and go up in weight class if and when he loses to GSP again.

Karo is fighting at UFC 106 not this weekend. They should have them fight then and move McLovin. First time I bought UFC tickets. Over priced, and the card almost lost Ortiz, def’ly lost Fitch, and KFlo/Guida was moved. Rollercoaster ride for fck sake.

Honestly i dont think they should do Fitch vs Alves again. that could easily be a co main event for any card. What the should do is give Fitch somebody like Hughes or another big name to beat, then give him Alves. This would build up the rematch even better. Then the winner gets GSP one more time. By far Fitch and Alves are the two most well rounded fighters in that division aside from GSP.

Hughes was Champion & then GSP was/is Champion before & after his fights with Matt Serra & GSP has already beaten Fitch… So Hughes it is because they were never matched up during Fitch’s 7 or 8 fight win streak prior to his loss to GSP & while Hughes was Champion… Matt Hughes it is!!!

Jon Fitch will fight Josh Koscheck because of three reasons, 1. They are two of the top contenders for the WW title, 2. If you watched UFC 103 post press conference Dana White said if you and someone else is a contender in a divison you better fight a team member or you will have to wait wait wait for a title fight, it was when Tyson Griffin made Dana White happy. (remember all) 3. The team vs team concept will make a big ratings for the PPV.

Well that sucks, sort of. I’m going to UFC 106, all the way from Canada. No one else better drop out on the main card! I don’t mind this really, I don’t like fitch, I find his last fights have been soooooo boring! The only fight I liked with Fitch in it was when GSP whipped him. I just keep hoping he puts on a great performance, as in knocking someone out or stopping a fight.

Coming from Toronto……….seems like there is a lot of juggling on this card. First we lose Guida and Kflo, then Coleman gets injured (but replaced which makes up for Guida and Kflo) and now Fitch is gone. Wonder when Karo will get hurt
