by john G on Oct 20, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats lame. The two things that Arlovski does not have is a strong head and a chin. Greg Jackson could easily repair his head for fights but Arlovski still has a glass jaw. If Arlovski moved to Jackson’s camp full time it would DEF help improve his game. Probably lead back into a UFC deal too.

by Jimmycrackcorn on Oct 20, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I remember I was excited when Chuck was moving to ATT. Then I found out it was similar to this where he trained there like two days. Too bad Chuck didn’t move to Greg Jackson full time. Maybe his last few fights would have went differently? Back to Arvloski, his ranking might go up if Grimm KO’s Fedor too. I realize that is a huge IF. But that would make Andrei’s loss sting a little less. Not like Tim Sylvia. Nothing can make that any less embarassing. Unless you’re like the Nog/Shogun guys. Big Timmay had a staph infection and a knee injury. He’ll be the UFC HW Champ again.
=D

Yep, I still think Arlovski is a good fighter, much better than Brett Rogers but hey shit happens.

Fighters are only as good as their chin is

A 22-second KO says otherwise.

by PW on Oct 20, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he was better for those 22 seconds and I am not saying Brett was lucky, he capitalized on his 1 and only skill and made the most of it. I do not think it would happen repeatedly if they fought more times though.

by Edgecrusher71 on Oct 20, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you can think arlovski is better even though he got caught with a quick ko, i’m sure people thought gsp was better than serra after he got kod. I know gsp avenged the loss but people thought he was better before he did, and arlovski hasn’t had the chance to get a rematch. I definitely think arlovski is better than brett, I would put money on him in a rematch he is quick with better endurance and a much better ground game, he is probably the better technical striker too, he has only one weakness against brett, and that is his chin

by ffffff on Oct 20, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Someone posted before that describes AA perfectly that made me LMAO this isn’t the exact words but you’ll get the point.

he had that same chin when people were calling him unstoppable…..he should bum rush fighters with his strikes 9/10 they will get knocked out

by Robert(1) on Oct 20, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely, Robert! AA is still an awsome fighter! He was spanking Fedor(Who I believe is the real deal!) until he became overzealous and made a tactical error! And this “chin” Bullsh!t I keep reading makes me wanna puke! The strikes that put AA out would’ve put anybody else out too!

by Dana's a CrossDresser on Oct 20, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are wrong. Thos strikes would not knock out Big Nog, or Couture and many others. Arlofski has no ability to recover anymore, and that mixed with his aging body and psychological problems just does not make him a good fighter at this point.

I hope he proves me wrong… I have always liked watching the pitbull. Him and CroCrop are sad to watch lately. But I would always love either of them to come back strong. (TImmy too.)

by Instant_Noodle on Oct 20, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, I believe, as so many others, that Brett Rogers and Fedor, Couls KO anybody! Andthat’s exactly what they both did to AA! To say that they wouldn’t have ko’d Randy or Nog is absurd! AA wasn’t given time to recover from Rogers due to his aggression! And Fedor knocked him out cold! There’s no recovery from that! Those were legitimate ko’s by two very heavy handed strikers! If Forrest had ko’d AA i’d start to wonder about his situation!

by Dana's a CrossDresser on Oct 20, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dana’s a CrossDresser you are right on. Anybody that would of been hit with those shots would have dropped (except for Cabbage). The no chin thing is amusing to me.

by SluggerCitySoldier on Oct 20, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My point was AA has no chin.

by El Mexicutioner, Formerly The Mexicutioner on Oct 20, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by knowone on Oct 20, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

listen…listen up.. Greg Jackson cannot help a weak chin.. You will get hit eventually..then its lights out again

by fistoffury on Oct 20, 2009 12:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t get how getting knocked out by Fedor while flying through the air (dumb decisions I realize that) means he has a weak chin or being knocked out by a guerrilla means someone has a weak chin as well. I am not saying he has an iron chin or anything but come-on now. Randy prolly has a weak chin then for getting KOed by Brock and Nog has a weak chin for being KOed by someone not known for stand up, Frank Mur. Yes I know all these guys history so don’t bore me with them, a bunch of tough guys saying he has no chin for being knocked out by guys like Tim Sylvia (pre 310 lbs) Fedor, A guerrilla, Pedro Rizzo ect… wow he must suck. I bet you put over 90% of fighters in the cage with that roster in mostly their prime like it was when Andrei faced them they would have a chance at getting knocked out as well.

by Edgecrusher71 on Oct 20, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree, people have written him off, i think he is still a top 10 hw.

by roy on Oct 20, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Based on sheer physical talent, Arlovski has few equals in the HW division. His combo of speed, power, athleticism and skills to match will always make him a dangerous fighter. His problem as I see it, is that I don’t think he responds to punishment or adversity very well, chin or no chin. He’s a fitter version of Gonzaga, a great front-runner, but someone who will crumble in any war of attrition. Simply put, Arlovski’s mental game and overall toughness are what needs improvement. If he can accomplish that, he can compete again at the top of the food chain.

by CL on Oct 20, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think its the fact that most of his losses are lost by the ko or the tko. His first fight was a ko loss to a nobody with a losing record, he has also been rocked in his loss to ricco rodriguez who has never been known for a knock out kind of guy… I would say he has a weak chin, but if you disagree you still can’t say he has a good chin, and if you are the type of fighter arlovski is, not having a good chin is the same as having a weak chin. Because when you stand and trade that chin is going to be tested.

by ffffff on Oct 20, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point but Arlovski has been KOed many times, and not always by amazingly powerful guys…Datsik springs to mind. Good fighter but his chin is relatively weak which is always gonna be a huge issue in the heavyweight division especially

by Ermac on Oct 20, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree edgecrusher. Most people that say he has a glass chin are, to put it simply, dumb.

His strategy was off, putting his chin out places where it could and did get nailed.

by big G castle on Oct 20, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

AA is one of the best HW strikers with out a doubt and can do some serious damage but he also has bad defence that takes him out of the top ten. yes he is a good athlete but not only is his defence sub par his ground game is sub par the only ability that AA has that would put in in the top ten is his Striking and even then he has been losing. He’s one of those guy’s that is dangerous against anyone because of his striking power but he also is one of those guy’s that can lose to a 20th ish ranked guy’s because of his defence abilities.

by Puck Head on Oct 20, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

his ground game is sub par? na its pretty good.

by roy on Oct 20, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When I say sub par I’m basing on the top twenty fighters and easily there are 10+ fighters on the board with better ground games in the top ten Santos, Carwin, and Rogers are not proven but already have the same amount of submission wins or more as AA has had. If AA can’t over power his man on the ground he’s in trouble because all he has is GnP wich only really works if you can control the position and I don’t see him controling anyone in the top ten and only 3 or four guys from 10 to 20. Yeah it’s sub par.
1 Fedor Emelianenko
2 Brock Lesnar
3 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
4 Frank Mir
5 Josh Barnett
6 Junior dos Santos
7 Shane Carwin
8 Randy Couture
8 Brett Rogers
10 Andrei Arlovski
11 Cain Velasquez
12 Alistair Overeem
13 Fabricio Werdum
14 Jeff Monson
15 Gabriel Gonzaga
16 Tim Sylvia
16 Cheick Kongo
18 Pedro Rizzo
19 Ben Rothwell
20 Aleksander Emelianenko

by FatAttack513 on Oct 20, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How do you guys call it a weak chin? I dont care how big you are or how tough you think you are, if a dude like Brett Rogers punches you square in your mouth a few times, you will eat canvas. Bottom line. Its not his chin that is the problem, its the fact that he is getting punched in it. Its a matter of taking it to your opponent before they take it to you. Jackson should help with that for sure.

by enzo-enormous on Oct 20, 2009 12:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No, the guy dosen’t have the capacity to take a punch, call it a weak chin or whatever you want but he will never be the hw champ again. All the great fighters, boxing or mma have an ability to take one as good as they give one. Andre is a powerful striker but can’t take a good strike to the head, the guy has a chin made out of fine china. He’ll always be a force because he does have great skills but never, ever will he be champ again. And actually, he was more of just a titleholder than a champ anyway.

by Rich on Oct 20, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

enzo that was the smartest thing i have read all day, roy jones jr has over 50 wins with a horrible chin but he doesn’t get hit. If jackson could teach arlovski solid defence and how to be elusive he could compete with anyone.

by sac165 on Oct 20, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He dosen’t get hit? Really? Joe Calzaghe hit ehim enough to make a mess of his face. Antonio Tarver knocked him out cold, then the very next fight Glen Johnson knocked him out cold again and he hasn’t been the same guy since. If you’re in a fight, eventually you are gonna get hit and he will.

by Rich on Oct 20, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

a chin of fine china? i dout its that weak go watch his fights again and you will see him taking punches and not going down.does he have a good chin no but its not that weak.

by roy on Oct 20, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry Rich, but I cant disagree anymore than I do right now. Saying that all the great fighters in mma and boxing take punches as hard as they give is ridiculous. If that were the case then Machida wouldnt be known to be so elusive because he would have taken those same punches he gave. Ive never seen anything remotely close to that happen in a Machida fight. Look what happened to Suga when he took them as hard as he gave them. Didnt work out too well in my opinion.

Roy Jones Jr. and Floyd Mayweather along with Oscar DLH wouldnt have lasted at all in boxing if they took as much as they gave. Mike Tyson would have been knocked out years before he was if he took them as hard as he gave them.

Bottom line is that your whole argument is invalid. If Arlovski can avoid all the damage and just get to his opponent first, he has a much better chance than he does by getting punched in his face. You dont “have” to get punched in your face hard enough to be knocked out to be champ. You should work on avoiding those punches to the face…. Jackson will help with that.

by enzo-enormous on Oct 20, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Problem is, you can’t always avoid getting hit. Sooner or later you are gonna catch one on the kisser and if you can take it your gonna be a great fighter, if you can’t, you won’t. Name one, just one all-time great that had a weak chin? There ain’t any… Otherwise they didn’t end up being great. I’m not saying abandon defense or let your face hang out in the breeze to get nailed. Of course you employ defense, but if you fight long enough you’ll get hit, it’s unavoidable.

by Rich on Oct 20, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Greg can teach him how to have some heart!!!!

by Spyder on Oct 20, 2009 12:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think these fighters with dodgy chins (Arlovski and Chuck immediately spring to mind) just need some good time off. They were generally solid enough in the past but like when you tear a ligament it takes a loooong time to heal – pretty sure that whatever it is that gets damaged in your brain/neck/chin that causes you to be KO’d needs a good break too, rather then every couple of months getting pounded. Take a year out just keeping up the gym work and cardio then try again when anything that’s been weakened has had a chance to repair itself fully!

(Might even be your eyesight, since a big part of being KO’d is not seeing the hit that does it – very hard to knock you out with a shot you see coming!)

by Jimrod on Oct 20, 2009 12:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually it’s called concussion syndrome. Once the brain has been concussed (temporarily shut off) there is damage. Whether it’s a grade I, II or III concussion, there is damage. The more concussions you receive ie; a tko or ko, the more brain damage occurs and you begin to be able to be ko’d or concussed even easier in the future. Just a litle FYI;I teach neuroanatomy at a local college.

Just lettin ya know that it’s just not my opinion it’s scientific findings. The guy has been concussed too much already, Greg Jackson isn’t gonna make that any better.

by Wes on Oct 20, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly right about the KO punch, Jimrod. It’s the one you don’t see coming that puts you to sleep. Do people really think Liddell hits harder (backing up) than Lesnar does? NO WAY! So how come Liddell put people’s lights out regularly while leaning back and fading away and Lesnar hasn’t put anyone to sleep yet? Answer, cause Chuck’s weird angle’s made it hard to see the punch coming.

As for whether taking time off would do anything for these guys, I kinda doubt it. Seems like once a fighter reaches a certain age or has been KO’d one too many times his chin starts to fail. Chuck used to have a granite chin and recover almost instantly from blows that would floor other guys. Same with Wandy. At some point, that changes I guess and the spine/brain can’t take the jarring any more, just like when the shocks on your car get too old.

by shonuff on Oct 20, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would imagine that the punch you don’t see coming hurts you more because you aren’t able to prepare for it by moving your head a bit, not whether or not you actually see it.
I agree about the time off thing though. I’m no neurosurgeon but I’m pretty sure these things are permanent injuries and not the kinda things that just magically repair themselves. I fear for the long-term health of fighters like wand, chuck, forrest, jardine who get knocked out so much you’d almost like to see them retire.

by frosnt on Oct 20, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he should just grow his beard for the next year and a half or so. There would be so much padding he could fight with his hands down. I would love to see Andrei utulize his ground game more! He has excellent submissions. Andrei has never tapped before and he’s beaten some very slick bjj guys (werdum (yawn) and pe de pano cruz. I deffinatley agree that Andrei should take time off and extensivley work on his defense. I still consider Andrei a huge threat among HVWT fighters. Sylvia-Arlovski 4?

Maybe it’s just me but there seems to be a new trend in MMA. It appears as if many of the more popular fighters who drop a fight or two end up running to Greg Jackson or ATT. Majority of them landing at Jackson MMA. Maybe Greg Jackson really is the master strategist. How better to coach your team against a top 10 fighter than to have coached them yourself to find out their strengths and weaknesses.
