Report: Alistair Overeem vs James Thompson for DREAM 12

Strikeforce heavyweight champion (cough) Alistair Overeem (30-11) will make his previously scheduled appearance at DREAM 12 on Oct. 25 against former PRIDE heavyweight bruiser James Thompson (14-10), according to MMA Fanhouse.
Yes, the same James Thompson who was stopped by Kimbo Slice at Elite XC: "Prime Time" in 2008 and yes, the same James Thompson who's dropped four straight and eight of his last ten.
Looks like another quick pit-stop on the Overeem World Tour. Pull the bus over, recycle a few cans, continue heading East.
Rinse and repeat.
Following a hand injury that booted him from two summer events, Strikeforce officials informed MMAmania.com last month that "Demolition Man" was expected to make separate appearances outside of the San Jose-based promotion prior to defending his belt.
One of those stints involved a trip to the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009, the other was for Golden Glory in his native Amsterdam, where he bulldozed the hapless Tony Sylvester on Oct. 17.
Following his bout with "The Colossus," as well as the remaining fights in K-1, Overeem is expected to return to Strikeforce to defend his heavyweight title (cough).
And with Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum and Fedor Emelianenko all gunning for first dibs, don’t expect him to receive a very warm welcome.

Don’t know why people are acting like he wasn’t announced to be fighting on this card for the last five months.

what a waste of time of overeem, i don’t blame strikeforce for this though but they should strip him of the belt already.
by roy on Oct 19, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought they would find him someone better than this though NNR. Even for people who don’t watch a lot of MMA, they know that James Thompson sucks. At least get someone with a chance of getting out of the first punch. Not first round, first punch, face or not.

Jesse, this is your best Photoshop effort ever! That photo makes Thompson’s ear look normal.

nnr~ thats the point, dude!~
he seems to always make the fights he has booked for dream, k-1 and other orgs.. but he always pulls out of the fights he has booked in the states..\
u can’t say he hasn’t had numerous opportunities to fight for stirkeforce.. he’s been booked on a couple cards..
by stinky~fingers on Oct 19, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Besides the card on June 6 name 1 other card he pulled out of.
You can’t.
And were you in an uproar all of last year when he fought in Dream and Ultimate Glory because Strikeforce had no one for him to fight?
My guess is no you weren’t because you didn’t even follow Strikeforce until they became the UFC’s new number 1 target.

ha!~ jumpon~ u don’t need to get all pissy..
ive followed mma for about the last 9 years, and im well aware of the other promo’s.. in fact, i love them all and have no beef with strikeforce or any of the minor leagues.. i am a HUGE supporter of japanese based mma, and sometimes prefer their shows over the more dominant and professional ‘ufc’.. but thanks for attempting to be a cyber bully..
~
my main point in this thread, is overoids is ducking the states and it’s obvious.. thats my opinion and im sticking with it..

Good pickup john, Te Huna is actualy a New Zealander Mauri, not Australian but has been training in Sydney. He has dominated the CFC which is Sydneys/Aus big MMA show and he reminds me of Tito Ortiz in appearance and fight style.
Hector Lombard (who reminds me of an umpa lumpa on steroids) was also interviewed on Australian TV recently and said as soon as he finishes his current contract he is going to the UFC. Ithink he has 2 fights left.

Yes, that’s what they need to do – let go one of only four or five top flight HWs left not signed with the UFC. Good thing they matched with Thompson – a quick KO without a chance at messing up his K-1 run. If he can win the GP, then Strikeforce will be able to market two fedor fights one against the best HW grappler in the world (Werdum who killed it at ADCC) and one against the best Kickboxer in the world. Not much but still better than former average pride fighter.
by NameNotRequired on Oct 19, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
that is faaar from a valid excuse if u ask me..
overoids could defend his belt[won or lose] and still compete and be a big draw for k-1..

NNR, Overroids is doing well in K-1 but isn’t taking his MMA career seriously, Sylvester and Thompson are pointless fights and he looks bad just for taking them nevermind how bad he’d look if he lost to Thompson. He should have been stripped of the HW title a long time ago as he’s never had any intention in fighting for SF and defending his title.
As soon as Fedor was signed he should have been named the number one contender and Overroids should have been told to fight him or had the belt taken off him, so Fedor-Grim could be made a title fight, no point promoting someone as the best HW in the world if you’re not going to give him a shot at the belt.
Overroids will never fight in the US again and will continue to compete on shows where he doesn’t get tested. Fedor-Overroids will only ever happen on a NYE show in Japan.
by David W-S on Oct 19, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
SORRY TO BREAK IT TO YOU, BUT OVEREEM GETS TESTED IN K-1.
WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT HIS PAPER TITLE? thEY GOT fEDOR WHO IS above ALL TITLES including UFC titles…They should just make Fedor, a “Fedor’heavyweight-title of the world”…The most meaningful title in the history of mma!
by john G on Oct 19, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions
David not you too. You are one of the few sensible people on this site. I would have expected you to be on the innocent til proven guilty wagon. Pointless or not, it doesn’t matter. He was signed on to fight on these cards. It’s not his fault the promoter can’t find anyone better but that won’t change the amount of money he’s getting paid. In fact it only helps him with his GP situation. Same as with strikeforce. He never signed on to fight anyone right when he got injured. Fans just decided that the Rogers or Fedor fight was made without anyone telling him. As far as his career, he said it in plain english a few months after cro cop that he wanted to concentrate on K-1 and that he’ll come back to MMA once he’s accomplished what he wanted. Who knew that mean winning the WGP at that time but still.

Can’t wait to here this hype line if I’m wrong : " coming off an impressive run across seas, Overeem demolished Josh Thompson his last outing!"
Now if that doesn’t pump you up, what does?

Josh Thomson? That’s even worse, a roided up HW beating up an injured 155er, even Japanese MMA has gone too far ;). Funny thing is Josh would put up more of a fight than Overroid’s last opponent, even with a broken leg.
Seriously I agree that Overroids won’t ever fight for SF again, he’s a pathetic champion and is never going to defend it. I’ll go further and say that he won’t ever fight in the US again.

Oldskooljjsu,
Plz never say “heard it here 1st” at the end of any posts. It takes away any credibility or humor that was attempted @. We never ‘heard it here 1st’ because often its already been said 20x before you in the same thread. Or in this case in a thread from 3 weeks ago or more (Herschel Walker).
& joking or not, STRIKEFORCE is no joke. Any1 can poke fun if they’d like, but I assure you, STRIKEFORCE needs not 1 of you UFC ONLY supporters.
TRY supporting the sport not the league. We’re very fortunate to have another league thriving and growing such as STRIKEFORCE, if you don’t like it, don’t comment on here, and don’t watch em.
Last I checked there’s plenty of UFC threads to comment on
