Around SBN: The cost of firing vs. the cost of retaining head coaches

Kazushi Sakuraba and Marius Zaromski added to Oct. 25 DREAM 12 event

With a week out from the first caged fight card in the promotional history, DREAM has announced additional bouts for DREAM 12, scheduled for Oct. 25 at Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan.

DREAM welterweight champion, Marius Zaromskis (12-3), who has been prominently featured in the promotional poster and trailer for the event, returns to action in a non-title bout against a Korean prospect, Myeon Ho Bae (8-4).

In the Middleweight department, Katsuyori Shibata (3-6-1) takes on Tokimitsu Ishizawa (7-1-3) in a showdown between pro-wrestlers, and Kazushi Sakuraba (25-12-1) returns for the second consecutive appearance this month to replace Melvin Manhoef against Zelg Galesic (9-4). Moving down the scale, Keisuke Fujiwara (4-0-1) squares off with Tomoya Miyashita (12-5-6).

Zaromskis makes his first DREAM appearance since winning the organization's welterweight grand prix at DREAM 10. A Lithuanian native training out of London Shootfighter, Zaromskis cut his teeth in UK's Cage Rage before making his DREAM debut.

He entered the welterweight tourney as a virtual unknown and considerable underdog: He sent a shockwave through the MMA world by upsetting tournament favorite, Hayato "Mach" Sakurai in the semi-final round with a high-kick TKO before dispatching Jason High with high-kick yet again to snatch the inaugural DREAM welterweight title.

Star-divide

His opponent, Bae is a veteran of M-1 and MARS who makes his DREAM debut. Having won seven of his last eight fights, Bae looks to maintain his momentum against Zaromskis.

Katsuyori Shibata recently snapped his losing streak with a unanimous decision victory over Ikuhisa Minowa at DREAM 8. His opponent and fellow pro-wrestler, Tokimitsu Ishizawa, returns to MMA for the first time in nearly three years. A veteran of now defunct K-1 Hero's and PRIDE, Ishizawa notched the most significant victory of his career in 2000 when he defeated the outlaw of Gracie clan, late Ryan Gracie.

Fujiwara, a featherweight ZST prospect, makes his leap to the big stage to take on DEEP veteran, Miyashita. Despite having only five professional bouts under his belt, Fujiwara has been rising through the ZST ranks with undefeated streak. Miyashita, on the other hand, has won four of his last five fights.

Finally, Japanese MMA legend, Sakuraba, who returned to action at DREAM 11 after a 10-month layoff, now breaks a two-and-half week hiatus to take on Mirko Cro Cop understudy, Zelg Galesic. Sakuraba scored a quick submission victory over MMA debutant, Rubin Williams, at DREAM 11, while Galesic last fought at DREAM 6 more than a year ago. Galesic lost to Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the semi-final round of DREAM Middleweight grand prix via submission.

Following is an updated line-up for DREAM 12:

* Zelg Galesic vs. Kazushi Sakuraba
* Tokimitsu Ishizawa vs. Katsuyori Shibata
* Marius Zaromskis vs. Myeon Ho Bae
* Keisuke Fujiwara vs. Tomoya Miyashita
* Paulo Filho vs. Yoon Dong Sik
* Chase Beebe vs. Yoshiro Maeda
* Eddie Alvarez vs. Katsunori Kikuno
* Kuniyoshi Hironaka vs. Won Sik Park

notice the author of that article…its Kevin iole…anyways, this was cleared up by hendo yesterday…he said although they had yet to come to terms, he hasn’t even seen or heard of ANY offers from SF yet…

Thanks Mac! I sure hope the UFC and Hendo come to an agreement. He’s one of my favorite fighters, and IMO the only one to stand a chance against the spider!

My thoughts exactly I hope the UFC signs him soon not only am I a fan and think he has a shot at the UFC MW title in undisputed 2009 I kick ass with him.

Hendo going back to the UFC***

Horedecki headed to the WEC***

by john G on Oct 19, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting news about Horedecki, presumably he’ll get a call-up to the UFC if he impresses in the WEC. Looking more likely all of the time that WEC will merge with the UFC, presumably that’ll happen when the UFC get the network deal that Dana is always promising, unless the DirecTV-Versus debacle causes them to rush it without having the programming set up yet for another 2 weight classes.

As for Hendo I’ll believe it when I see it as I’ve heard too many conflicting stories. I’m not too fussed about what he does, as long as he fights Nate or Gegard next.

WEC fighters have been called to a zuffa meeting where big news will be announced (think the meeting is on NOV 1st and a merger will be announced)…Right now, Horedecki willl have to fight at 145 lbs, as he grows, he can then make the jump to LW

What a benefit and a dissappointment all at the same time
Marius Zaromski could be put to better use IMO.

If you don’t know him by now then start googling.

Bring me Aoki vs Zaromski next year please.

didn’t know him before he Koed Mach, AND Jason High…he was def impressive that night…it is a big waste of time kinda like Mouassi/Soko…champions should fight in nothing but title fights imo…there is NO POINT in non-title fights…promoters are just asking for trouble as they’re giving the supposed challengers nothing to lose…for example, Soko has nothing to lose by swing for the hills against Gegard but what if he connects?

Why are they bent on getting the man killed. I can’t get behind this match. This is ridiculous. I would love it if he won but Marius is gonna HL reel him.

Mac I heard about Marius because he beat up Ross Pointon (UK guy – TUF fame) a few years back. I didn’t see him as the second coming or anyting but I had an idea who he was going into the Mach and High fights.

Like everyone else since that night I’ve been patiently waiting for the next bout… AND THIS IS IT!

really?

Imagine – Zaromski vs Eddie A?
Barn Burner.

by Big Zino on Oct 19, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why do you keep trying to match this guy up with much smaller lightweight?

Stop it.

by Jumponthis on Oct 19, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

they are two of the most elite lightweight champs right now (available in Japan) and fighting at WW isn’t a huge leap for either one.

Don’t forget WW is 168 in Dream so It’s not like it’s
the ufc where Thiago Alves is cutting down from 205lbs+ street weight.

Blog talk buddy – strictly hopeful thinking.

finally sakurab fights an mma fighter!

Im worried about myboy Eddie.

Zarom by destruction!

by john G on Oct 19, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Neither Eddie A nor Aoki should fight at WW. They’re too small. We all know what happened to Aoki at WW, and Eddie A got mauled by the Goat at WW. 70 kgs is where they belong.

Don’t worry about Zaromskis for now, he’ll have plenty of WWs from Strikeforce to fight and legitimize his title once they get their collaboration going.

Please…Marius is good but nothing special. Ross Pointon did well against him and Che Mills beat him twice. This is the Che Mills who couldn’t get in the TUF house (lost to James Wilks).

UFC signs LHW Aussie, Te Huna, who0 happens to be a fockin Animal!

Great pick up!

Thanks rock you answered the question which was who? Zaromskis was going to compete with in Japan, but that makes sense to me I forgot about SF

Moon thanks for the info – thats why I’m hoping we get to see him measure against someone named – because he just destroyed a good and great one. I thought i had heard MichaelShevello say something about him tooling ross pointon but its a good argument if true.

MMA math…lol

Fair point Moon, though to be fair to Marius he looked outstanding in the Dream WW GP. He may have lost to Che Mills a couple of times but Che could be the Dennis Hallman of Zaromski’s career, I’m interested to see what he can do though I agree with Mac that champions should never fight in non-title fights in their weight class, it’s pointless and makes the title meaningless.

Also to be fair to Che, James Wilks was a tough opponent for the first TUF fight as he’s the top British prospect in my opinion. Wilks is more well rounded than the other British fighters including Hardy and if he can continue to improve his striking he could be a force at WW. Matt Brown will be a tough fight but I’m expecting Wilks to catch him with a submission.

I always thought Che was a decent fighter!

by john G on Oct 19, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Che is a decent fighter buddy, just choked in the tryouts against a good fighter. To be fair in that fight he was pressing the action just got caught in a slick sub.

Che is also HUGE for a W/W. He needs to get himself over to a big US camp, he is still young and can improve. Don’t be surprised to see him in the UFC within the year.

Paulo Filho should be banned from fighting forever for what he did to Sonnen…I know he had problems but to take the fight and deliberately not make weight is so disrespectful its disgusting…I hope he gets his head knocked off, tho it doesnt look like thats gonna happen in this fight.

by salamagogo on Oct 19, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ban a guy who’s 18 & 1 from fighting again because he missed weight for a fight.

You’re a real smart guy aren’t you.

by jumponthis on Oct 19, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok…forever is a little harsh…but for a few years, anyway

by salamagogo on Oct 19, 2009 1:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why does overeem fight so much outside the states where regulations are non existent and always seems to have something to cry about to dodge fights in the states. SF puts on so many title fights per event but no one ever defends them, they just disappear.

by jaime on Oct 19, 2009 1:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Don’t understand why the non-title business going around lately, but no matter, I’m more interested in the fights themselves and not some belt. Pride did a lot of non-title fights with its champions back in the day, Gomi, Wanderlei and Fedor all had a number of non-title fights to fill out cards. Will be good to see Zaromskis back in action either way. Hope he ends up at Dynamite in a title defense though (rematch with Mach would put up the event’s ratings).
