Chuck Liddell considering a return to the Octagon -- even if it means fighting Kimbo Slice to do it

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"I still love fighting. I don’t know what we’re going to come up with. I’m going to start spending a lot of time training guys or get back in there –- one of the two. I needed some time off. "Dancing" actually gave me something to concentrate on and get in shape on. I just want to get back in shape and stay in shape and start training with people and see what I want to do. [And] why would anyone even want to see me fight Kimbo? I have no interest in that fight. Whatever. It is what it is. I guess I’d do it, if that’s who I had to fight to come back."

Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell mulls a potential return to the cage that made him famous after getting booted from Dancing with the Stars on ABC. "The Iceman" is coming off a technical knockout loss to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 97 back in April, marking his fourth loss in his last five fights. Company president Dana White has pressed his good friend and big time money-making machine to hang up the gloves, saying he has made a ton of cash and has nothing left to prove. Liddell — who will be 40 years old by the time April 2010 rolls around — clearly needs more time make up his mind -- but would apparently do whatever it takes to get back inside the cage. Even if that means fulfilling a rumor gone wild about hooking them up with the grappling deprived Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson.

I’d watch it just to see Kimbo eat canvas…

by O damn he got caught on Oct 19, 2009 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

id watch it just to see if chuck could even remain standing after taking one flush shot…

by HellaHectic on Oct 19, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

honestly i dont think he would even survive going toe to toe with kimbo anymore….hed have to dust off his wrestling to have a chance…kimbo is way too fast and hits harder…

after the way he fell down from that shogun punch kimbo would have him snoring like wes sims from episode 5

by HellaHectic on Oct 19, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree, I think Chuck has the ability to still be very relevant and would destroy kimbo IF, and this is a big IF, he used his other skills besides Boxing. He can kick and grapple well but is scared to use it which sucks because I do think he is a complete fighter but he can’t break his mental wall he has set up for containing his other skills and solely relying on his boxing.

by Edgecrusher71 on Oct 19, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

ill take kimbo !

LOL……anyway you never know a little time off and with the right training he can be a threat in the UFC again I think his main problem is he’s too one dimensional and had relied to much on his stand up with little change on his approach in the octagon. If he does come back I hope he gets another coach to help adapt his game I know a fight with Tito would be a huge draw. If he stays with his same style I don’t think he’ll fair to well though.

by Beaver on Oct 19, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya hellatic take khaos warriors advice. Your an idiot stop embarrassing yourself with your ridiculous statements.

by mma guru on Oct 19, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo vs. chuck is Irrelevant, but its a MEGA Fight (Financially), and although I dont like Chuck, he DESERVES TO Have the right to choose, even if he isnt very good anymore! I respect Chuck so much because he was one of the few posterboys in UFC history that wasnt babied! He was always willing to face anyone and always asked to face the best. wasnt his fault that all the top fighters in the LHW division were in Pride during his title run and that stylisticaly he always had an advantage…Not a chuck fan, but I respect him a lot…and if he wants to fight Kimbo for Millions, he has earned that right…shame on Dana if he books that fight!

by john G on Oct 19, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha the is semi true about Pride… it’s not his fault that he and his opponents in America were actually tested for roids lol.

by Edgecrusher71 on Oct 19, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Liddell wouldn’t train very hard for Kimbo. I would hope that he would take it very serious and come in for the kill. That would be a huge money making fight and Chuck wouldn’t want to take any chances.

by RyanHobbs on Oct 19, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

guru u disagree with my assessment? please elaborate…tell me what it is that chuck has accomplished over the past 2 years that would lead you to believe he would remain standing if he took a flush shot from kimbo…this isnt 2005 anymore…if chuck used his wrestling yea hed dominate…but he wouldnt…hed go toe to toe…his jaw wouldnt last…

by HellaHectic on Oct 19, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

“stylistically he always had an advantage” will you say the same about anderson silva and machida? and at the time when chuck was champ when all the best lhw were in pride, randy tito and babalu were all in the top ten at that time! as for this fight, some sites are saying that kimbo will first meet huston alexander, anyone heard or read about this??

by TRUTH on Oct 19, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I say he still has some luster left. Feed him to Jon Jones after he beats up Hammil. Just make him a breakout fight for one of these young kids who have talent but need a big name on their resume – a luiz cane or something along that line.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 19, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Hellatic chucks jaw isnt close to what it used to be but still he got ko’d by evans, shogun, and rampage in the last 2 years, those guys hit hard. Kimbo’s power is vastly overrated, who has he ever knocked out, a 50 year old tank abbott and a bunch of thugs in his backyard. Kimbo got ko’d by a jab from a tuf castoff and have you seen him fight on the show he still fights the same way, chin up going forward using poor boxing. Chuck would kill him standing up, if you think otherwise you need to have your head check and you have no clue what your talking about when it comes to mma.

by mma guru on Oct 19, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

oh yea guru, and the way chuck just manhandled jardine just shows how effective his style remains…jardine is the only guy who has a worse chin than chuck…kimbo doesnt have to go out there and look like roy jones…he just has to land one shot…u say shogun is a hard striker..yes its true..but the shot he sent chuck to la la land with was anything but a fight ending shot..

chuck fights the same way too…chin up going forward..thats why its so hard to miss now..the guy hasnt evolved his style in years…thats why everyone has adapted to him so easily…chucks only recent win is against a guy who is on an worse loss streak than he is..

besides, kimbo outweighs him by 30 pounds…kimbo says he could fight at 205, but the dude is straight muscle, and not an ounce of fat, i have no idea how he could cut that much weight…

not even big country had the balls to stand with kimbo, he took 3 shots and went to the ground immediately cause he respected kimbo’s power and wanted NOTHING to do with it…

i bet you also thought chuck was gonna beat rampage in the rematch didnt you? i bet you thought he was gonna beat jardine too didnt you? i bet you also thought chuck was gonna beat rashad too didnt you? i bet you also thought chuck was gonna be shogun too didnt you?

how many times have you been wrong about chuck in the past couple years? a FUCKLOAD huh? i certianly dont think you expected shad to lay him out like that did you? or shogun..or page…maybe you’re the one who needs his head examined…cause you obviously havent a clue about mma for constantly underestimating chuck’s opponents….

which one did you actually get right? the wandy fight? congrats, you got one

by HellaHectic on Oct 20, 2009 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Lol at your your post, your comparing kimbo to top 10 lhw fighters. Kimbo can’t beat anyone in the ufc, strikeforce or dream, he is a joke. How many times does he need to get beat by guys that are tuf cast offs for you to realize this. Wandy hit chuck harder and more times than kimbo could ever dream of and chuck was still standing. Even though chucks chin is far from it used to be its still better than kimbo’s, he got ko’d by a jab, what a fight ending punch that was. I like how you judge kimbo’s power because he hit roy nelson and then nelson took him down. Thats what nelson does he is a wrestler. Chuck would kill him anytime anywhere anyplace and so would shogun, rashad, rampage, wandy, jardine, petruzelli, the guy is a joke who will never win a fight in the ufc and could only dream of beating chuck.

by mma guru on Oct 20, 2009 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo is flat out terrible, and would get killed by Chuck. Kimbo seems to be a real cool, nice guy. That doesn’t change the fact that he can’t fight for shit. Where is all this hype about Kimbo’s power coming from. Even in is backyard brawls he barely ever got a knockout. He couldn’t even Knockout James Thompson! There isn’t a fighter in the world with a worse chin than James Thompson! Kimbo was Ko’d by a jab from Petruzelli. He would be in a coma from an overhand right from Liddell.

by naturalshadow on Oct 20, 2009 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I AGREE chuck has become a b-level fighter, think even if gina carano punched him in the face he would go down, it would be sad to see a fighter as new as kimbo with no ring experience knock him out

by brandon on Nov 6, 2009 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

I realize this would never happen, but I’m just thinking out loud.

Chuck should leave the UFC and fight for Strikeforce. I actually think that would be the best career move he could make. I’m sure Strikeforce would pay very well to let him fight a can or two. He could beat a couple nobodys and restore his career a bit. After a couple wins, he could either retire, fight Mousasi or Fedor, or come back to the UFC and take one last mega fight and retire.

Chuck Liddell is a hero and has fell like Mike Tyson did well, maybe not as hard as Tyson but, he is faded. I hate seeing him loose and wish he had stopped after the Jardine fight. Knowing that evans knocked him out hurts me a lot. Chuck got me into the sport…

That may be his best route. Well paid. A great addition to a great league, perhaps get him some regained confidence he needs. And put money in his & coker’s pockets. Great idea.

Now let the hating begin. Haters goin hate right?

Why does Chuck always kick in his training sessions and yet I never seen Chuck kick in the past three years. To see Chuck fight would be awesome.

by Cory B on Oct 19, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Liddel is a better striker then Kimbo no doubt, but all kimbo needs to do is f’in sneeze on Liddel to knock him out.

by BMO on Oct 19, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Kimbo strikes harder than Liddell, the ability to take a punch is a different matter. We don’t know how Chuck can take those anymore, I think it’d be safer to say, “Who ever got the first shot in on the chin would win”. Remember, Kimbo folded like a wet paper towel under the weak jab of Seth Petrazelli.

by The Buffalo on Oct 19, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

It took him quite a while to bust that grapefruit hanging from Thompson’s ear as well. He wouldn’t have 2 rounds to try and land a decent shot on Chuck. No way would Chuck lose to Kimbo.

I believe you may have misread, you should read the post again.

What’s with all the rude responses lately?

Put up your opinion and debate it… case closed. Telling people they’re stupid and never to post again is ridiculous!

Back to the topic, I think Chuck would definitely win against Kimbo. Although Chuck’s chin is now questionable I’d still love to see him fight again. Some good time off, good training, and different trainer/coaching… you never know!?

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Tito (if someone did, I missed it). For a long time it was the highest UFC PPV ever. Honestly it’s not really a match that I’d really like to see, but it definitely can be hyped as main event material. I don’t think Dana would let it happen though, because I don’t think he wants to give Tito the satisfaction of possibly beating a wilting Iceman. I for one don’t want to see that either.

The Iceman is in a tough position. You feel he isn’t elite enough to hang with the big boys, yet you’re scared that a nobody could come of with a clean shot and embarrass him. Then again if he beats a nobody, then so what. It’s a lose-lose situation.

exactly, well put.

Well,it’s just nice to see some ‘news’,about Chuck, which is mma related for a change!

by bons on Oct 19, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

Like Cro Cop, Chuck’s time has past him by. He’ll never beat anyone relevant again as he hasn’t evolved with the times and looks off the pace in his fights these days. Neither of them will ever beat anyone relevant again and beating a can like Kimbo won’t change that.

by David W-S on Oct 19, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

I have no problem watching Kimbo or Chuck but not as a main event. I won’t give Dana an extra PPV buy as he uses Kimbo because of his name power. I used to like Dana, but am slowly losing respect for him. He’s just a loud mouth version of Vince M or Don K.

by DF on Oct 19, 2009 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

Kimbo by brutal first rd. KO. Book it. Chuck will be face down in the canvas again.

The only problem is that fight is never gonna happen because Kimbo’s gonna get KTFO by Houston Alexander.

I’ll second that. They paint him to be a nice hard working guy on the show and everyone loves him now. Kimbo will NEVER be good enough to fight in the UFC. So he works hard, big deal, so does everyone else. Dana talking about how good Kimbo was after his pathetic loss…sad, very sad.

People don’t yet understand the recovery time in mma is just longer due to the impact difference of the gloves. I think by the time Liddell gets back into the cage he will be fully recovered. If he trains how he should, he will be a force for a time.

I could see Kimbo landing some punches, but not on the button. I think Chuck is way too experienced to just take a clean hit to the jaw from mr. Slice.

I understand mma just fine new comer. I’ve been posting on this site A fuck of a lot longer than you langis or whaaaaatever ur name is.

We simply stated it would be a great option for him to look into STRIKEFORCE & had it not been for his great ‘friendship’ with Dana, he’d probs be more inclined to take it. No it won’t happen most likely, but we didn’t say it would, simply said it was a good option @ this point in his fighting career, as the 205 in UFC is too much for him. However, in STRIKEFORCE he could potentially have a great run @ the climb To the title. However, he wouldn’t get past gegard.

Maybe you should open ur eyes to other options then what Dana told you to look @ lil guy. Its a great, big, scary world out there, try seeing over that wall.

i carnt believe this shit kimbo will lose every fight he has in the ufc and chucks a legend. Chuck hasn’t used his kicks in years like in the second babalu fight because he is slowing with age and he dont like throwing too many head kicks with top 10 lhw because its tiring. Plus shogun once beat rampage and was pride champion and was only 26 when he fought chuck he was faster than chuck you could see it but chuck did take him down tho. Nearly all chucks fights he has fought former champions future champions and top contenders kimbo fought bums and lost tuf 10 is the worst season i ever seen for talent and kimbo still looses just because you saw him on youtube saying give me my god damn bread knocking out some poor albino and some black guys out that couldn’t knock a fish of a wet plate dont make him a good stiker he carnt defend take downs he has no ground game he is not a mma fighter he has a hard punch and a ripped body does that mean i can kick chucks ass too ?. All the people chuck has beat or lost to can beat kimbo without even training. Kimbo might be a nice guy but i dont give a shit putting kimbo in the cage in the ufc is wrong can you imagine brock vs kimbo or junior dos santos v kimbo or anyone thier are lw that could beat kimbo. Cage rage is where kimbo belongs they won’t take him down but he will still get ktfo

Even though I agree with this post 100%, the lack of punctuation was distracting. After a while it was suspenseful as to when we’d see the next period but the run on sentence was ended with a question mark instead.

" i can kick chucks ass too ?. "

I like how he threw in that period at the end, almost like he knew it belonged in there somewhere but couldn’t find where.

not that old but age is different for different fighters….I mean Jardine went toe to toe with him, and didn’t even get floored…the Chuck of 5 yrs ago would have Randlemanned him!!!
