That was awkward. Why would Overeem even take that fight? This is what’s keeping him from defending his Strikeforce belt? Fights like this? That’s lame.

by Collin on Oct 18, 2009 12:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Alistair can’t defend his Strikeforce belt because he likes to eat horse meat and they test for that in the US….

haha I’d rec that comment, if only it were possible

by Matt on Oct 18, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the 10 year anniversary of his Gym Golden Glory. That’s why he fought on this card. He’s not defending his belt because of the K1 GP.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 18, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, seriously. all of u guys that critizize Overeem must be thinking with your a$$. why would he fight someone like Fedor? he would most likely get hurt and miss the K1 GP finals!

it worked out great for AA taking a fight on short notice in Strikerforce 3 weeks before his pro boxing debut, didn’t it? it’s a business, you gotta be in control of your career.

by RoBerto on Oct 18, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

By Horse Meat you, of course, mean Vetrinary Steroids.

by Freddy on Oct 18, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok first of all im pretty sure they test in the k1 for steroids and he hasnt failed ( although im not sure how legit it is) second of all he has gained like 30 pounds of muscle but it took him like 3 years to do it so that can be done for sure, and last he prob makes much more money doing this fights in Japan and who can say no to a easy paycheck. I know I may be biased since im a Overrem fan but to tell you the truth im not sure wheter he did or didnt use roids no matter how much we speculate we cant be sure saying that though its really getting hard to defend him specially since he has not defended his strikeforce belt in so long, he says he will defend it at the beginning of 2010 and the only real reason I belive that is becouse he will be facing Fedor and a chance to beat a legend (ounce fedor steam rolls through Roggers) I know weve been hearing his gonna defend his title for a long time but it always fal through I really belive he will and like Roberto said he did not want to miss the k1 finals, but if he does not defend his title at the begining of 2010 I will stop defending him and he should be striped of his belt.

by Nor Cal Mexican on Oct 18, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Innocent ‘till proven guilty!
I don’t know if this applies to Overeem based on speculation alone. But I say let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.

As for this fight of his, cr@ppy! He should test himself more. Though I would take the easy route like him and earn a quick paycheck by fighting cans..

by The Negation on Oct 18, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Considering that Bob Sapp has fought in K-1, I am gonna go out on a limb and say that they don’t test for steroids.

by naturalshadow on Oct 19, 2009 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL, yeah of course they don’t. Japan don’t do sh!t, it’s all about cartoons and video games, it’s a fake world and that is why no other sports are doing big in Japan ‘cause the whole shizznit is usually corrupted.
I’m sure there are some tests when K-1 goes to other countries.

by Gronsvart on Oct 18, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

u r a moron and a UFC fan boy.. If he didnt fight a can and fought a top 10 heavyweight outside his promotion would it still be a joke u moron?.

by zack on Oct 18, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course it wouldn’t be a joke if he didn’t fight a can. But he turned down a chance to defend his belt to fight a can and that is fact. So, yes this fight was pointless. Do you not question his decision to take this fight against a can rather than defend his belt live on CBS on Nov 7?

by Sleven on Oct 18, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

FIRST OFF i was responding to the other post saying the UFC is right in having exclusice contracts. I still would rather it this way even if he fought a can. THAT BEING SAID if this fight is a can in a non exclusive contract then the next fight has to be against a QUALITY i REpeat QUALITY opponent. And to respond to u this fight is only point less because he fought a can like i said. Even though he missed NOV 7 this whill be corrected if he fights for Strikeforce next and defends his belt. U gotta have a medium between being non exclusive and having to defend your responsibilities

by zack on Oct 18, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

dude Overeem has not defended the strikeforce belt….EVER and has had it since 2007. That is pretty lame. He could have taken a fight with Fedor and there is no bigger fight than that. The guy has lost to Shogun twice, Chuck and every quality fighter he has faced has beaten him. 3 years without a title defense is not a medium between being non-exclusive and his responsibility to defend the belt it is complete disrespect to strikeforce.

Be honest would a UFC champ ever go 3 years without a title defense and instead fight a can for another show?

by hatteras on Oct 18, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Take it easy there Zack. Your boy should Overoid should be over at Strikeforce defending his title against whoever they put in front of him, case closed.

SF brass should really be pissed at this guy, fights everywhere else but at SF.

by UFC Champ on Oct 18, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hatteras well stated. I think it is ridiculous that he is allowed to hold the belt as long as he has without defending it. Nov. 16 will be exactly 2 years since winning the belt and since he has in the Dream cards and 2 BS, Ultimate Glory cards against bs opponents. He pulled out against Werdum in August, because he hurt his hand fighting in a nightclub. Denied fighting Fedor on nov. 7th so he could fight K1 and this crappy Glory Road. There is no medium in what he has done and it is, much like his Strikeforce title at the moment a joke(for what they have allowed him to do).

by guyverbob on Oct 18, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the correct answer.

If he wants to do K-1 and other stuff, he needs to relinquish his Strikeforce title so someone else can have a crack at it.

by Nor Cal Mexican on Oct 18, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True, though you could hardly call that a fight, the guy he faced was his mate who purposely went easy on him. It also took place in a state without an athletic commission as nobody in their right mind would clear Kyle Maynard to fight. Not a time to be a proud MMA fan by any means.

pretty much the same level of fighters too, one weak guy and one pro, well not like i wud consider a steroid user and a guy who goes into fights plaining on hitting his opponent in the balls a pro, and he ducks fights too, so srry i shud’nt have called him a professional..

i agree with the first post .. this is why he cant fight guy over here. Right now Overeem is wasting time for whatever reason!! u cant tell me he’s making more money or fighting better guys

by zack on Oct 18, 2009 12:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yes he is. FEG probly pays him more than strikeforce or anything the UFC would offer at this point. This fight though has nothing to do with $$$, it’s more about repping his gym.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 18, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

FEG is DEF not paying more money u have no clue. And as far as repping his gym lolol gimme a break. There has to be a reason y he has not fought in the US yet be serious. Overeem is losing major respect.. he’s barely a top 10 fighter as it is. Any one wana debate that Holla at me

by zack on Oct 18, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This fight was announced almost last year. As far as why he’s not fighting in the US, it’s because he never officially had a contract with Strikeforce. He won the 4 man tournament and got the belt but Coker only officially had drafted a deal with Vitor because it was assumed that Belfort was gonna take the field. This is the reason why there was nothing to force him to defend his belt. If you know anything about the situation then you would know that it wasn’t until a few months ago that Overeem and Bas boon ironed out and solidified everything. And if you wanna talk about no clue, saying that he makes less money in FEG. This is a promotion who just handed out $100000 for the winner of a FW GP, and one of their biggest draws doesn’t make anything? You think anyone here in the states would offer him big dollars? Why he’s not a draw. The fact that you don’t know how ridiculous the Pay in japan is proves that you’ve only been watching this sport for a year or two or simply a UFC fan. Finally you also implied he’s a roider which i can also debate you on with actual hard facts instead of that picture you saw on sherdog and the UG made by Cofield and company. If you want a serious debate, I’ll run circles around you all day long. i put up my knowledge of everything MMA against anyone.

Strikeforce took the belt from Cung Le for not defending it since he won it in April of 2008. Overeem won it in 2007 and has never defended it so…..
Why is the Fedor vs Rgers fight not for the title?

by hatteras on Oct 18, 2009 6:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Both of them should have lost their belts along time ago, Cung only gave it back because he’s done with fighting, Coker’s too soft to take the belts off inactive champions. Thomson should have lost his belt as well seeing how Gilbert won an interim title and defended it whilst he’s still injured. Fedor-Grim should be for the belt but at this point they’re meaningless, that’s one of the reasons the belts are being unified with Dream’s titles, so they can actually have some legitimate belts and champions.

by nibs12 on Oct 18, 2009 6:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Shouldn’t Overeem be defending his Strikeforce title instead of fighting guys lower level opponents? Sounds like he’s got the Fedor mentality- play it safe, and take on small fights while continuing to build his name, rather than fight the big names and prove he is best.

Sounds like these guys are more slots machines than craps…

by Al on Oct 18, 2009 6:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If you look at his career, not really. He has faced many names, win or loss. This MMA fight may have been a paycheck fight but the dude also fought K-1 weeks before that. If you take his K-1 fighting into consideration he’s fighting several more times than a normal top MMA fighter who will fight three times a year if they’re lucky. He fought Crocop and Hunt last year in MMA, then fought Badr Hari and Remy Bonjasky, the two top guys in K-1. He also fought a noname Korean in his Dream debut and Gary Goodridge in an org local to the Netherlands where he lives but he already fought 4 legit opponents by then.

by quidnunc on Oct 18, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lots of hate for Overeem. Overeem is over rated, on steroids, blah blah blah. Not saying I don’t agree, BUT just wait until he fights Fedor and those same people will be saying what a great opponent Overeem is.

by DolFan on Oct 18, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

True is he probably over rated but also with this new body he hasnt been beaten as of yet.. that would be the reason why he would be a good opponent for any heavyweight not only Fedor. Also he has had some promising moments and skills so It would not be a surprise if he were to actually turn things around and be Dominant. But until then he is just good hype and attraction for any fight.

P.S. slow day today just read Shogun trainer predicts a Ko 3rd round Put that one up MANIA and lets pop it off
