Best of the best: Shogun Rua UFC 104 interview exclusive with MMAmania.com

shogunruainterview

In 2007, toward the dissolution of the Japanese-based Pride FC organization, Mauricio Rua was considered (arguably) the top 205-pound fighter in the world.

This was even during the time that Chuck Liddell was executing his reign of terror on the UFC light heavyweight division to the tune of four title defenses, while simultaneously piggybacking the sport of mixed martial arts and dragging it closer to the mainstream.

Since that time Rua has experienced a mixture of ups and downs to say the least.

He suffered through a disappointing loss in his much anticipated UFC debut to Forrest Griffin back at UFC 76 in September 2007, two separate knee surgeries, and countless months of rehabilitation.

Once healthy enough to compete again he took a fight in January 2009 at UFC 93. A rehabbed, but out of shape Rua defeated Mark Coleman in what was the epitome of a lackluster performance.

At UFC 97 in April 2009, a better conditioned Rua showed flashes of his old self when he knocked out another UFC Hall-of-Famer, the aforementioned Chuck Liddell, to earn number one contender-ship status.

The reward for attaining this position is a title match with the current champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida, whom no man has been able to figure out, much less defeat throughout his 15 career professional fights (seven of which are in the UFC).

UFC 104 on Oct. 24 marks yet another milestone in the evolution of the much publicized UFC light heavyweight division -- a battle between a former world number one (Rua) and the current world number (Machida).

Will Rua be able crack Machida’s code and shock the world in the process? We will find out in a matter of days.

In the meantime, "Shogun" took some time out of his busy schedule to discuss his recent training, the unique challenge of Machida, Brazilian MMA, and what being a UFC champion would mean to him.

Check it out:

Star-divide

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Where has your training camp been taking place at and who are some of the training partners and coaches who have helped prepare you for Lyoto Machida at UFC 104?

Mauricio Rua: My training camp for this fight was done in Curitiba (Brazil), my hometown at the UDL academy. I'm working with a team of people that know me very well and most importantly know my game very well; my brother Murilo "Ninja" Rua, Andre "Dida" for the Muay Thai, Joao Raphael "Simpson" and Rodrigo "Pimpolho" for Jiu-Jitsu, Marcelo Barreto as the coordinator, Andre Neumann with the strength and conditioning, sparring partners like Joao Paulo "Tuba," my manager Eduardo Alonso, and many others.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Are you completely healthy at this point and have you corrected your cardio issue that plagued you in your recent fights?

Mauricio Rua: I'm completely healthy and feeling ready for the fight. We did all we felt was needed and I expect to come to the fight in great condition.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Should we expect to see the very best Mauricio Rua we have ever seen on the night of UFC 104?

Mauricio Rua: I feel obligated as a fighter to do my best when I fight, to give my best effort. This is what I demand from myself and what I'll do as always at UFC 104. A fight is a fight and many things can happen. Lyoto Machida is a great fighter and we respect him a lot, but I'm going to do my best and I'm sure it's going to be a great fight.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Is this the first time you have been the underdog in a fight?

Mauricio Rua: No, not at all. During most of my career I was always used to be the underdog. I was the underdog for my last fight with Chuck Liddell. I was the underdog in Pride when I fought Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, and I was the underdog on the whole Pride GP in 2005, so it's nothing new.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you mind being the underdog?

Mauricio Rua: No! Much on the contrary. I even like being the underdog. This way I feel I have much less pressure and it's the other guy's obligation to beat me. I feel like I have only the obligation to do my best and I have much more to gain than I have to lose.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Machida is a puzzle that nobody has been able to figure out so far. What is it that makes him so unique?

Mauricio Rua: I think what makes him so unique is his background, karate, and how he adapted it to his own MMA fighting style. When you fight other fighters they usually have a background of boxing or kickboxing, striking-wise, so it's something you are used to dealing with, as you have been training with those kind of fighters through your whole life so you know their distance, timing, etc. Against Lyoto it is usually something you never dealt with, or at least not so often, and until you figure his style out sometimes it's too late.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Have you watched tape on Machida’s fights and found a weakness or a specific way to attack him?

Mauricio Rua: My team and I watched a lot of tapes and did our homework. Machida is a great fighter but every fighter has weak points and strong points as there are no perfect fighters. Like I said, a fight is a fight and many things can happen, so we will see by fight time if our beliefs are right.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you feel confident you can beat him if you stand with him toe-to-toe the entire time?

Mauricio Rua: I always come to a fight feeling confident in my skills and projecting ways to win. If it's going to be standing up, on the ground, etc. -- only the fight can tell. Many things can happen in a fight and the important thing is to win and be prepared for any situation that can take place.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you feel like you have an advantage in the submission game on the ground?

Mauricio Rua: Lyoto Machida is a complete fighter, very good standing up, and very good on the ground. I think we are both well-rounded and we both can present challenges for each other on all areas depending on who's on a better night or execute the better strategy.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Will this fight go the entire five rounds?

Mauricio Rua: I don't know! (laughs) I think we both fight to finish the fight so it's very likely that it can end up before the five rounds.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you have an official prediction for the fight?

Mauricio Rua: I never do predictions for a fight. I only want to go in there and do my best. I feel always obligated to put my best effort to give the fans what they want to see, and exciting fight. I want to win, and I fight to win, but I welcome any type of winning situation.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What would becoming a UFC champion mean to you?

Mauricio Rua: It would mean a lot. It's what we work for, what we train for, and the ultimate goal any fighter can have right now. The UFC is the biggest fighting promotion in the world, has the best fighters and I think the 205-pound weight class is likely the toughest class in the game, so to become the champion in the biggest show and on the toughest weight class means the world.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): If you are fortunate enough to come away with the belt are there any other guys who you would like to fight in the future?

Mauricio Rua: I don't really think about that. First and foremost I have to focus on Machida. He is the champion and my next opponent so I have to think about him and how to beat him. Only after this fight I'll think about my next step and talk to my manager and trainers about that. Also, I feel it's up to the UFC to seek the best matchups and give the fans what they want.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Would you like it if the UFC held an event in Brazil in the near future and is this something that Brazilians would like to see very soon?

Mauricio Rua: Of course, I would love for the UFC to hold a show in Brazil. The sport is growing so much and the UFC has been doing a great job to help its growth. They are doing a lot of PR in Brazil and step by step we can see the improvements here. MMA is getting more and more known by people in Brazil and the hardcore fans would love to see a UFC show down here. Now it's a matter of getting more people involved into the sport so it becomes viable for the UFC to come, and I think it's only a matter of time.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Is there anything you would like to pass along to your fans out there or any sponsors you would like to thank?

Mauricio Rua: I would like to thank my fans for all the support through the hard times. Their the biggest reason for us to go and train every day and we have to always thank them. Also, I would like to thank my sponsors Bad Boy and Nutrabolics for their incredible support. See you guys on October 24th!

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Thank you very much, Mauricio.

I really hope it’s a close fight. I don’t want to see it end in the first or second. I can’t see how Mauricio can win but I’ve said that many times before about other fights so you never know.

Portugal got a nice draw. Ireland got France so it’s not looking so good for us. :(

Anyone think the best chance for a fighter like Rua might be going right at Machida from the start? I think that the feeling out process gives a fighter with such incredible timing like Machida a huge advantage. I’d like to see Shogun go right at him and try to work the clinch or take it to the ground. I also thought Rashad would’ve had a chance if he used his wrestling to try to bully Machida on the ground. Unfortunately Rashad is another one of those converted wrestlers that vastly over estimates his hands now. I don’t see Shogun having much of a chance in this one, but I’d like to see him go right at it without allowing Machida the extra time to get a better feel for his timing. Staying on the outside with Machida will NOT work.

by Diceman on Oct 19, 2009 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, ground is where Shogun should be…if Tito can almost pull off a triangle…..

by Robert(1) on Oct 19, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly! Rashad has WAY TOO MUCH CONFIDENCE in his hands, just because he knocked out an aged Liddell and TKO’d a glass jaw Forrest. His best bet was to take Machida down! Machida doesn’t have the wrestling experience that Rashad had. And again, if Tito can get Machida in a triangle….then there is no reason that Shogun cannot get him in a sub on the ground. Shogun was able to take Chuck down (briefly, but still…) I still dont know about Machida’s chin though since hes never really been hit. If Shogun connects with something, it might be lights out. I just hope SHogun shows up in top Pride form.

Nice interview. Two badboy fighters for the title I guess they know how to pick ‘em. Too bad Shogun is gonna lose as he’s a great fighter probably the 2nd best in the division. He should fight AS after Silva gets those 2 title defenses out of the way.

by frosnt on Oct 18, 2009 11:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I love that as bad as the both of them are they are both so super humble. For Shogun to come out of the Chute Boxe camp and working so much with Wandy, I am suprised he is not more of a shit talker. He is so quite and almost shy in his demeanor when I have seen him in interviews. He is a total class act either way.

by Da Monkey on Oct 19, 2009 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Have to remember that Wandy is normally pretty humble these days too. Hasnt always been that way tho, I know, just much more of a humble person now

Shogun will be very prepared for this LHWC belt… I have confidents he will pull this off…

WAR SHOGUN!!!

by N1SHOGUNFAN on Oct 18, 2009 11:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m not sure who will win this fight, but people are severely underestimating Shogun. I will be shocked if Machida dismantles Shogun like he did Rashad and Thiago Silva.

Shogun is the most well-rounded fighter Machida has ever faced. If he comes in shape, he has no major weakness: he’s extremely athletic; he’s a good striker with a great clinch game; he has excellent jujitsu and good ground and pound. There is no place where Machida is definitively better.

by A.T. on Oct 19, 2009 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is also going to be the most well rounded fighter that Shogun fights. I am not saying saying that Shogun can be compared to Thiago and Rashad, but up to the moment they had fought Machida-they both had ben virtually unharmed in any fight. Machida dispatched them with ease and super violent finishes. In my head I see Machida TKO’ing him in under 2 rounds making it a quick night. Yet my heart says Shogun will hang in there and take the fight to MAchida. My overall feeling is though, judging on Rua’s last 2 performances, MAchida will win this fight and with some ease. People keep saying that the Coleman fight was a warmup fight, but that was Coleman’s first fight in 3 years. I don’t no If there is anyone I would love to see champ it would be Rua-but I think Machida at this point in his career is leaps and bounds above everyone…

by Da Monkey on Oct 19, 2009 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I remember Silva’s fight against Antonio Mendes when he got head kicked, rocked, and almost lost against the UFC newcomer.

And I also remember when Rashad lost to Tito…

by Jon on Oct 19, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah seriously. thiago was really close to losing that fight you cant say he was “unharmed”

by AzCombat on Oct 20, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Shogun is the most well-rounded fighter Machida has ever faced”? What about Thaigo, Franklin, Tito? Machida is much better than Shogun, than anyone in the UFC on his feet. The guy doesn’t get hit. I’ve never seen him take any damage.
Don’t believe the hype. Shogun is done for. Sho-nuff!!

by capt doug on Oct 19, 2009 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How can you possibly say Tito is more well-rounded than Shogun? Thaigo is not as good a striker as Shogun; you could argue they’re the same on the ground.

Good point with Franklin…I forgot about him. But I still think Shogun is a bigger threat both on the ground and standing; to steal Kenny Florian’s line, Shogun “finishes fights.”

by A.T. on Oct 19, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Capt. Tito is a wrestler. That is it. He has a ground and pound game. That to me is not well rounded andis why he has been irellevant for close to 6 years. I think Machida finally formulated and combined his karate to melt with mma so perfectly that if he fought Tito again he would run through him. Tito was his first real matchup in the UFC and I think he had not figured out his game yet. Thiago may match him or equal him on the ground, but he is not a more technical striker then Shogun. He is good but not on Shogun’s level. Rich who maybe the closest thing to a well rounded fighter, that Machida has fought to this point, I still think lacks a bit when comparing to Shoguns striking and Rich is not on Shoguns BJJ/ground game level. He is well rounded and experienced but not on his level. With that in mind, I would really love to see a super showing from Shogun, I just feel he lacks that certain, je ne se qua that he had in his Pride days.

by Da Monkey on Oct 20, 2009 7:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A.T lyoto will dismantle shogun, just like he did to the last 2 fighters he faced. rashad was more atletic than shogun, with much greater hand speed, shogun shouldnt even be fighting for a title after getting beat by a scrub like griffin, beating a 50 yr old man, and knocking out chuck who has lost 5 of his last 6 fights, and goes down if anyone touches his chin. I see one of the worst mismatches of all time, worse than when he fought rashad, will be shocked if shogun lasts past the second round .

by curly on Oct 19, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

handspeed won’t get you anywhere when you fight a real technical striker. that’s Rashad’s thing, he can rely on his handspeed and explosiveness against lesser or equally skilled strikers b/c he’ll most likely beat them to the punch when they exchange with poor defence.

by RoBerto on Oct 19, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, also I’ve seen replays of Shogun throwing punches, and his hands actually seem to generate electricity and unleash a ball of lightning on your chin. That has to be worth noting.

by Chalkbot on Oct 19, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Curly: Rashad may be more athletic/explosive, but he’s not a better striker than Shogun. He also doesn’t have Shogun’s ground game. Shogun is multi-dimensional both on the ground (g&p, submissions) and standing (clinch, boxing, muay thai kicks). Rashad is a just a boxer/wrestler.

Rashad didn’t fare well in the Machida fight because he tried to out-counter Machida. You can’t beat Machida at his own game. I think the fighter to finally beat Machida will do it by intelligently attacking.

by A.T. on Oct 19, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol AT, no place where machida is better than shogun? think youve been sniffing too much glue. Anderson silva, who has a pretty good standup has pretty much said, machida destroys him standing during sparring, yet you think shoguns standup is maybe better than andersons?i dont even think its better than forrests, and it took anderson a few seconds to beat forrest. I know shogun wasnt in shape, but come on im sure his handspeed hasnt changed, lets make a bet if shogun survives past the seconf round, i will say you know what you are talking about, if not just admitt your a fool, for thinking shogun belongs in the same rung with machida

by curly on Oct 19, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

note the word “definitively”—I didn’t say Machida wasn’t a better striker than Shogun; I just said the difference in their skill levels isn’t night and day like some people say…And I’ll take that bet.

Lyoto is a master at being patient and using elite technique to DISMANTLE his opponents.

Shogun has had some lack-luster performances since coming to the UFC but he underwent 2 knee surgeries and prolonged absense, ring rust has an affect. He looked good against Chuck and i can only hope he comes in the best shape of his LIFE!

if i was betting i’d have to put it down on Lyoto until someone showes he has weaknesses but i would LOVE nothing more than to see my boy CRUSH the karate kid with some nast Muy Tai or even a slick sub to restart his reign of terror!

other than shogun who else stands a chance to beat machida……. NO ONE, in my opinion this will be machidas toughest test for some time

i also think rua has the more impressive resume and although machida finished rashad and t silva impressively including wins over franklin and ortiz those guys dont compare to who shogun has beaten like jackson, nogeria, lidell, overeem, arona

the more i think about this fight i see shogun as the new lhw champion

by dia mette on Oct 19, 2009 2:33 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rampage would do plenty good infact id definitely choose Rampage over Machida anyday of the week. Rampage still has that super chin and KO power+speed and he comes in low with good defense, which is the perfect style to leave Machida outcold.

Sadly we wont get to see him fight Machida anytime soon.

by Khaos_Warrior on Oct 19, 2009 3:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn’t agree more, Rampage is nasty. good to see someone seeing what i see.

have you seen the fight between Rua and Jackson? Even to this day Jackson has said it’s the worst beating he has ever took.

by mcs on Oct 19, 2009 8:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

watched it tons of times, Rampage came in with a broken rib or a sour ribcage and he got his ribs broken with the first knee or something in the fight. Being the warrior that Rampage is he didn’t quit and almost got f’in killed before that lil girl of a referee came in about 3 years too late. what he’s said til this day is you don’t know the problems i had stepping into that fight, i shouldn’t even have taken it.

bumpage didnt come in2 the shogun w/a broken rib yur crazy! shogun kneed him in the ribs & broke them! 1st 2 make rampage cry after a fight!Ninja kicked rampages ass in pride 2

by d*locc on Oct 19, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha Rampage…he has zero KICKs, how the hell he beat Machida without kicks??…Boxer/boxing will only works if you’re in reach/in boxing range, but Machida’s stance is so difference, his head is not in range for the opponent to engage…look at Rasha, he’s a good boxer but he can’t get close enought to land those shot….while Lyoto will time you and land those kicks to the side, leg, head…

by Tim-chida on Oct 19, 2009 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh, what? Rashad is overrated as a boxer, his technical and defensive skill isn’t at Page’s level, he’s shorter too. Most important part of Quinton’s standup that he can use to beat Machida is ofc his tight defence that he is so good at using to come back to counter, only Tito has had good enough defence so far to even be able to give Machida some sort of problems for 3 rounds.

ppl also forget his excellent wrestling.

by RoBerto on Oct 19, 2009 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this should be one of the biggest mismatches of all time. shogun is taylor made for machida, his agressive style, with slow looping punches will not stand a chance against machida. Dont expect for this to go past the second round.

by dtoto on Oct 19, 2009 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL, you really think a one dimensional rampage, who doenst even know how to check kicks, let alone throw one,has a chance against the dragon. Machidas hands are way to fast, better timing, footwork, reflexes, rampage was offered the fight, but knew after seeing rashad getting dismantled he wouldnt have a chance

I think that if Jon Jones develops at the same rate he has been lately, he will be a force in the division. I think his road to the championship begins in 2010

by Jon on Oct 19, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Come on, man. Shogun beat Jackson well before Jackson was ever at his best, same with Overeem and Arona. He KO’d Liddell but everybody’s KO’d Liddell lately.

Rashad and Silva were at the top of their game and Machida made them look like toys. It’s hard to compare fighters by whom they’ve beaten because it’s not that cut and dry.

I’m not making any predictions cuz I don’t do that, but I think one way or another there will be a surprise or two in this fight. I can’t wait.

Aggressive, coming forward Muay Thai vs Machida Karate.. that already happened and Thiago got KTFO. Please tell me what Shogun can do to Machida that nobody hasn’t already tried and failed to do. Unless Machida makes a stupid mistake, I can’t see Shogun winning. Even Anderson Silva has said that he isn’t sure he could beat Machida, what makes you think Shogun can?

by Alex on Oct 19, 2009 8:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Very general safe answers.
His interviews sounds more or less like Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Wanderlei Silva and a number of other brazilian fighters. I really appreciate Shogun’s work-like approach. It’s just a fight and he plans on putting an aggressive show.

Too bad there are no soccer kicks, which would be interesting to watch in the UFC.

by Vee on Oct 19, 2009 9:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great job! Rua is a dangerous underdog and I won’t be surprised if he pulls out Lyoto’s belt. Machida is the favorite one, though.

by Eduardo on Oct 19, 2009 9:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m leaning towards shogun in this one. Albeit machidas very impressive I think Shogun presents more of a puzzle to machida than any other fighter he has faced.
Machidas said in the past before a fight he, his brother, and his father watch tapes of their opponent and come up with a very precise gameplan for him. (I.E: they planned to KO thiago silva at the end of the round) with that being said I don’t think that the 3 fights shogun has had in the Ufc are good enough to work off of. A shit performance against Forrest where he wasn’t even half of what he is, a cardioless fight against a geriatric coleman, and an impressive win over chuck. 3 different lvls imo. So if machidas devising a way to beat shogun from Pride, and that shogun actually shows up, than its going to be a hell of a fight. War Shogun!!

Did they really plan on KO’ing Thiago at the end of the round? I didnt know that…and he was finished AT THE END of the round…was funny watching Yves (spelling?) get Lyoto off of Thiago..then 2 seconds later looked and realized he was out cold…

Rua needs a game plan a la Thales Leites vs AS and then he’ll win! Take it to the ground and submit this over-hyped urine-drinking dragon!

If Shogun loses, who’s next for Machida? Evans, Griffin, Rampage, these are supposedly the top guys in the division, but Evans already got schooled, Rampage is out of the equation, and Forest would get demolished. Everyone says the LHW is stacked but I don’t see it really. If only Mousasi could give Lyoto a run for his money. Anyways, I’m rooting for Shogun. He’s yet to face Rashad or Thiago Silva. Good value on Shogun in this fight at over a 3-1 underdog. Mostly though I just hope each fighter can do themselves credit, win or lose, this should be a rivalry for the next five years.

Totally agreed Nathan. I tried saying this before and got pounced on cause the truth hurts.

But the truth is our LHW division is weakening. Its a nice thought to mention guys like Forrest, and thiago and rashad and Jones. But let’s be real, at this moment in time, none are a true, true LHW threat.
Rampage gone
Wanderlei 185 & close to done
Chuck done
Hendo moving on most likely & @ 185
Nate @185

I’m sorry guys but we’re weakening. & I’m also sorry to say the strikeforce is looking strong & you guys won’t admit it for a year, but you’ll be watching. Suck up ur pride! Shogun’s ‘pride’ is gone ;)

Machida is gonna hurt this poor guy bad.

I <3 mma not just UFC. Sorry I support w/o bias.
