Aussie rag slams MMA invasion down under; Elvis Sinosic slams back

Our friends over at Watch Kalib Run have posted an interesting article that details the pending mixed martial arts invasion in Australia and the local media's not-so-enthusiastic reception of it.
The Sydney Morning Herald ran the usual MMA hatchet job when covering the UFC venture into the land down under, peppering the article with all the tried-and-true anti-fight buzzwords like "human cockfighting" and "brutal," to name a few.
Our staunch allies at WKR, Zak Woods and E. Spencer Kyte, took their case to Australia's own Elvis Sinosic -- and "The King of Rock and Rumble" wasn't exactly pleased with the depiction of the sport he's been calling home for over 12 years.
His scathing reply, after the jump.
My name is Elvis Sinosic. I am Australia’s most well know Mixed Martial Artist (you would no doubt label me a cage fighter). I have been fighting in the sport of MMA since 1997. I read your recent article "Cage Rage coming here" and it read more like a fairy tale than a factual newspaper article. It starts with conjecture stating an opinion that is inaccurate and of someone so irrelevant that it is not sourced at all. First of all the sport is not and has not been referred to as human cockfighting for many years and then only by those who were uneducated to what MMA was. The sport does not promote any sort of "street fighting" as your article claims. If anything it says fighting is for the cage not for the streets.
He even refers to a move called "Pound and Ground". He hasn’t even bothered to check his facts. When you read things like this you realize that the writer has not taken any effort to check his facts and information. The move is called "Ground and Pound". It then mentions the absence of a blood rule. Where does he get his facts from? Friday night late night movies? The sport has doctors ringside. The sport allows the referee to stop the match to check for cuts and injuries. Making false claims only makes your paper look like a story book not a newspaper. It even mentions that you cannot throw in the towel. It does not bother to mention that nothing can be thrown into the octagon. It doesn’t then state that the corner can stop the fight by signaling the referee. They just cannot stop the fight by throwing in the towel, it must be done verbally. It then goes on to state that the sport of cage fighting started in 2007. Once again does the writer even bother to check his facts or was that just the first time he saw the sport advertised in his local TV guide? The sport of MMA has been in Australia since March 22nd 1997. The sport has been going on, and safely at that, for over 12years. The false and inaccurate claims and facts just reeks of unprofessionalism.
Then the writer degenerates even further attempting to compare it to fighting animals. Where does he come off? Fighting animals is illegal and unethical. I’m a fighter and was also at one time a volunteer for Sydney wildlife and I find the comparison disgusting. The animals are mistreated and have no choice in the matter. Fighters on the other do have a choice. They choose to fight. They are treated very well by the promoters who look after them and lets not forget that they are also paid for their efforts. Not only that but the sponsors look after their fighters well. When have you ever seen a sponsor at an animal fighting event? Then you have the fans who do look up the fighters. And if you think they are all thugs you are greatly mistaken. Watch the end of a match. You will see two great competitors who, regardless of the result, will congratulate each other in a mutual show of respect, something that is not seen in many less "barbaric" sports. The writers comparison’s are appalling.
I challenge your paper to write a factual article on the sport of MMA. I’ve seen other papers take the time and effort to do their research and write a fair and factual account of the sport. I offer up my services as well. I am a professional MMA fighter. I have been competing in the sport since it first started here in Australia in 1997. I was the first Australian to fight and win in the UFC. I was also the first Australian to get a World Title shot in the UFC. I have competed in MMA across the glove in countries such as the US, Canada, Japan, England and Sweden. Not only have I been involved in the sport as a fighter I have also been involved as corner man helping fighters during the matches. I have also been a commentator in different events such as the UFC, Warriors Realm and The CFC. I also run a martial arts school and teach students who are may become fighters in the future. I have a great understanding and passion for the sport. I hope that your paper decides to do the right thing and write a follow up article that is correctly researched and fair and balanced.
I look forward to hearing back form you.

Elvis Sinosic

While it's unlikely the newspaper will respond or change the way it approaches the sport of mixed martial arts, it's refreshing to see a local fighter stand up for what they believe in and not just "accept" the negativity from haters like the ass-clowns over at the Sydney Morning Herald.
The UFC is coming to Australia in 2010, they might as well get used to it.

Well done Elvis. I’m so sick of these ignorant self-proclaimed “journalists”.

Good rebutal by Elvis. However in my experience as an MMA fan I also know that even if the newspaper did provide factual information, unless they are 100% pro-UFC, everyone would still hate on the author of the newspaper article anyway.
As much as people who write this uneducated, 100% anti-MMA, drivel, are writing out of their asses…MMA fans (and/or fighters) are just as harsh with their responses to the article if even 1 negative fact about the sport is represented in the article.
Just sayin’.

So then don’t get shit wrong. What happened to accountability and facts with the news media? When did it become wrong for us to critize the media for selecting their stories and bending the truth? Just sayin’
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Oct 14, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Most “News” is about selling advertising and not about facts. I’ve seen countless “News” stories where I’ve had personal knowledge or a friend has had personal knowledge of the events and the Media distorted the facts to make a story, it was like it wasn’t even the same event that they were reporting. Remember, news is about facts, not about opinion.
Walter Cronkite, you are missed.

I agree with you.
I’m just sayin’ that when someone writes an article that isn’t 100% pro-MMA it usually gets the same response as the completely off-base articles (like this one).
Criticizing an article like this is perfectly fine, because it’s drivel….I agree.

In that case I’d have to agree as well. I’m tired of news medias pulling their articles from facebook or twitter, or some random blogger on the internet. They should be fined for that kind of shit

Yeah Elvis is a huge advocate for all martial arts down here and as one of the most recognised, its great to see him stand up for the sport. Journo’s who publish that crap are pathetic and clearly uneducated.
We are a very physical culture, by that I mean we have sports like Rugby, and Australian Rules Football (AFL) which are extremely physical and you have more chance of getting injured in either of those sports. Not to mention we have every other form of martial arts here on a regular basis.
Mania, you are right, they may as well get used to it. I am so excited about the UFC’s arrival here next February, so much so I have delayed my trip to Rio (Carivale) just to make sure dates do not overlap.
Does anyone know an exact date?

For those who do not know what the AFL is, take a look on youtube:

Aussie Rules is crazy, I’ve never really understood the rules and can’t get into it myself, I’m more into Rugby League myself.
As for this reporter he is a disgrace and it’s pathetic that biased idiots can rant about something that they are clueless about and influence the sheep that read their rubbish stories. It’d be like me writing an article bashing Aussie Rules, getting the names of the sport, teams and players wrong as well as the rules then people believing it all.
Good on Elvis for writing an intelligent and articulate response to this moron, hopefully he bothers to reply but if he couldn’t even be bothered to research the basics of the sport I have my doubts.

It looks like this guy just copied and pasted from Se. John McCain’s anti-MMA stand from about 12 years ago when UFC was open weight, no rounds, no time limits, and no real rules. Glad to see Elvis slap him down. It almost makes me sorry I referred to him as a can in a previous thread. He is, but still.
And I just a four-game rugby tournament over the weekend. Not a good idea for someone of my advanced age.
by PW on Oct 14, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
you view that as a more impressive display of physicality. I view that as a display of decreased mental faculties. I;d rather wear padding and live longer with less injuries any day. Although i admittadely thought that video was pretty awesome
by connor on Oct 14, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea how dumb of us to protect our players! Wait how many rugby players have died? a quick search on google shows 71! How many NFL players have died? Like 5…Thats just talking deaths, not too mention all the bad injuries that happen beacuse you guys are too tough to wear padding & helmets! obviously were girls.

Yeah I love the NFL, especially when steriods are allowed, good Cardio is viewed as minutes on the field, players dont go to jail after committing a crime, being overweight is celebrated, the field is as small as a basketball court mmmm what else, oh yeah, the actual game time is completely government by advertising on TV. AWESOME Sport :)
by DownUnder on Oct 14, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Ya, go ahead and call an NFL player a girl, it’s a different sport. Why do they wear so much padding for cricket? Baseball we don’t, and they’re getting pitched directly at! Wait, what? You say it’s different? Exactly!

I’m of the opinion that many articles like this one is just the product of the “TUF Era” of MMA. It’s kind of ironic that the UFC is really responsible for bringing in so many new fans through the establishment of TUF, but has really ended up being a target of those new people.
If you think about it…without TUF this article doesn’t even get printed.
by introvert on Oct 14, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions
Without TUF, the UFC would be struggling to find a cable network nevermind being on PPV in Australia. Whatever you think about the show or Dana you have to admit that the ratings that show pulled, particularly the Forrest-Stephan fight were a crucial part of the UFC boom. Pride would have died anyway because of the Yakuza scandal so without the UFC there would be no top MMA promotion today and without TUF the UFC would not be as wealthy or popular as it is today.
Surely all MMA fans have to be happy that there is a global organisation with the majority of the top fighters, regardless of moronic articles from clueless journalists who still think the sport is like the original no holds barred days of MMA.

I agree. With good popularity comes bad popularity.
MMA isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
by introvert on Oct 14, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions
True MMA isn’t for everyone though I’d respect their opinions on the sport a lot more if they just said that they don’t like combat sports instead of reading rubbish that they made up in articles or blogs. Personally if I hate something I don’t read articles about it as that would be a waste of time.
MMA is a controversial sport and is growing in popularity so there is always going to be good and bad publicity, as long as mixed martial arts fans, fighters and promoters react sensibly then the sport will look good despite the criticism that is why Elvis Sinosic’s response was so good. Thankfully he wrote an intelligent reply and didn’t resort to threatening or abusive language to get his point across, personally I think if you swear, shout at or insult someone you are debating with then you don’t have a concise argument or anything worthwhile to say. That is why Dana should be more careful with his language at times, I don’t mind him saying F this F that on a vlog or on TUF but at press conferences or interviews it comes across as unprofessional and makes him look like the thug reporters like this idiot stereotype all involved in MMA as being.

Although this article is completely bias, I do think that MMA fans need to lighten up a little about newspaper articles sometimes.
Heck, I’ve seen articles written about MMA that were pretty much spot on, but used the word “brutality” in the article, and every MMA fan under the sun called the reporter every name in the book. MMA is a brutal sport, so I don’t really see the sense in aruing that point. Is MMA a beautiful thing to watch sometimes?…absolutely…but it is brutal, and ranting and raving about a newspaper reporter calling a spade a spade is a little stupid, IMO.
Hell, just because some fighter trains under the Gracies for ten years in BJJ, doesn’t mean that watching him choke someone unconscious is for everybody. If someone here were to train under Al Pacino for acting lessons, that doesn’t mean that Roger Ebert is bound to only writing positive articles about the person’s acting.

An article that expresses bias is biased.
I’m not knocking you at all; I agree with what you’re saying. You’re right. I think articles like the one Elvis is criticizing are the functional equivalent of trolls on blogs. They exist to create a lot of heat and generate comments (or letters to the paper, or whatever).

The target audience for the UFC is the 18-34 male demographic, that’s the same demographic that porn companies target… I’m assuming that most people outside of that demographic would object to porn as well.

while i’m all about watching journalists make complete fools of themselves… especially arrogant boxing “purists” that hate on MMA
Elvis is a walking talking publicity stunt, I would compare him to Tito Ortiz… but, even Tito is a better fighter than this can.
He is standing his ground and name dropping about MMA in hopes that Dana White will offer him a fight in February 2010 when UFC comes to Australia.
I’m sure Elvis has a glowing personality and is a great guy and (let the nuthugging begin) but the guy is a mediocre fighter at best he has no business in the UFC, and he’s trying to talk his way back to relevancy.
