UFC 108: Junior dos Santos vs Gabriel Gonzaga possible for Jan. 2

Cigano vs Napao

The traditional "year-end" show for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) keeps getting bigger.

Literally.

Hard-hitting heavyweights Junior dos Santos and Gabriel Gonzaga are expected to tangle at UFC 108, which is scheduled to take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010, according to Fighters.com.

"Cigano" recently cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns when he had former Pride FC star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic pleading for "No Mas!" after a three-round drubbing at UFC 103 just last month. The Brazilian slugger is now undefeated (3-0) inside the Octagon with three straight technical knockout finishes.

Gonzaga, on the other hand, warmly welcomed Chris Tuchscherer to the promotion with a devastating first round ball bash at UFC 102 back in August. The Minnesota Martial Arts Academy-trained fighter was given time to recover; however, he returned to get utterly smashed shortly thereafter by a relentless "Napao."

It marked the third win in four attempts for Gonzaga. But the former number one contender has struggled against top competition. He'll try to shuck that label once again when he squares off against his fellow countryman on fight night.

UFC 108 is expected to feature a main event between 185-pound division deity Anderson "The Spider" Silva defending his division title against former light heavyweight champion Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort. Another former 205-pound champion, Rashad Evans, will also likely return to action against another Brazilian, Thiago Silva, in the co-featured fight of the night.

Junior is the real deal! I am telling everyone right now to watch out for this guy. He can bang with any of the big boys! He will knock a lot of guys out!

by nicky on Oct 12, 2009 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

yea but it will be interesting to see how he reacts when he ends up on his back against gonzaga…we’ve never seen his ground game…gonzaga got carwin down pretty easy and carwin is a decorated wrestler…plus he also knocked carwin’s nose into the 3rd row with one punch..

i see it goin to the ground, this is a dangerous match up for dos santos…

by HellaHectic on Oct 12, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s been a while but he did get tooled by unheralded Mamute in his 4th? fight on the ground. His defensive wrestling is the real weakness but against Gonzaga, i think if he can puts shots on him then he’ll fold. Gonzaga is a front runner. Against guys who don’t belong in the cage with him, he looks like a fedor but with decent opposition not so much.

JDS by KO

by TaPouT on Oct 13, 2009 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Gonzoga is becoming the new gatekeeper for the UFC HW division a solid all around fighter with good size and abilities but he usually doesn’t look in good shape and has issues defending against the fighters he has faced. His last fight against Carwin he looked to be in good shape and ready to fight but he took a clean shot from Carwin that would end anyones night the question I’m unsure of was it a lucky strike or a bad defended strike and JDS will answer a lot of those questions as he is a better striker than Carwin not as powerfull but very accurate for HW standards with KO power. If Gonzoga doesn’t want the gatekeeper role he better be training on his striking defence against a dangerous looking Santos who has NOG in his corner so I would be pretty sure he has the ability to defend Gonzogas JJ if it happened to go to the ground.

JDS via “It’s clobberin’ time!!”

by Syd on Oct 13, 2009 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

No way, in my opinion GG is one of the most underated fighters in the UFC. I am confident he will be wearing the belt some time in the next couple of years.

He was tooling Carwin prior to being caught by a drunk punch and take away his broken nose against Randy and that would have been a different fight.

He is good in all areas and hits hard. Think he will have too much for JDS.

by Nick J on Oct 13, 2009 5:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Gabe has all of the physical tools to be a worldbeater but doesn’t have the right mind to make it, everytime he has faced adversity he’s crumbled. When Randy got the better of the grappling exchanges he gave up, the broken nose wouldn’t have helped his cardio but asking for a timeout is the sort of thing gutless fighters like Varner do when they are in trouble. He also quit in both defeats to Werdum and got smashed by Carwin. He’ll only ever be able to beat other mentally weak fighters like Cro Cop or no name bums and even then he has to kick them in the balls to do it.

JDS is the future of the HW division, anyone who trains in BJJ with Big Nog is going to have a good ground game and he has the best hands in the division. I’m amazed that people are bashing his performance against Cro Cop, he outclassed a K-1 quality striker in the stand-up and whilst he didn’t KO him he was able to break him mentally and made him quit. I don’t know what more you could have asked, he thought a fair fight unlike Kongo and Overroids who kept kneeing Cro Cop in the balls and just because he didn’t land a highlight reel KO like Gabe doesn’t make his win any less impressive. A lot of Cro Cop fans were picking him to win and that was a big scalp for JDS so it’s really dumb to suddenly criticise him for not winning the way you wanted him to.

If JDS lands some nice combinations like he did in all of his previous fights Gonzaga will give up and be easy pickings, his only hope at winning is to take JDS down early and submit him as he doesn’t have the technique to catch him standing or the heart and cardio required to beat JDS in a war. Gabe will never beat a top contender at HW again and will always be the guy that beats nobodies and loses to the top contenders.

by David W-S on Oct 13, 2009 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I do agree that Captain Paycheck headbutted him and tried to pass it off as a legit win. But still, the man folds against most pressure.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 13, 2009 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Gonzaga is one my favorite fighters as well. He has some mental shortcoming since losing to Couture, but he has really done well overall. HE had Carwin beat and just got caught. Carwin has that kind of power, that could have been anyone. CArwin has a punchers chance against anyone. Werdum beat him in the ground game, not the standup. He hungin there with Couture. He broke hi arm, unfortunatly for him his nose got caved in and he was having difficulty breathing. I think Gonzaga would fair fair well with BRock style wise. A big strong BJJ guy with heavy kicks and hands. IT could be trouble for Lesnar.

by Da Monkey on Oct 13, 2009 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions

GG is crap. He had one highlight reel win over Cro Cop and that’s it. Every time he fights someone decent he gets crushed. He probably wouldn’t even have beaten Lesnar’s training buddy if he wasn’t puking in the corner from a brutal sack attack. Dos Santos wins this handily to earn the right to be Lesnar’s next victim.

by PW on Oct 13, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I will also take JDS by TKO.

by Jeff on Oct 13, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I wonder, when Nog fights and beats Brock, and if Cigano beats Gonzo, he’s just going to beat all the No.3 and 4 contenders and not fight Nog for the belt? Going to be interesting to see how that plays out. Whether or not they do JDS vs Cain, Kongo/Mir, or Brock/Carwin loser. And with Nog guarentee’d a title shot, where will an impressive win put Kongo/Mir? Regardless of all the hate, Mir has an impressive recent record in the HW division. Wins over Nog and Brock, however controversial, means you should be at the upper end of the rankings.

Heavyweight division just became another clusterf*ck like the LHW division.

by Synyster on Oct 13, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s a good thing though. It means there are plenty of viable contenders. When you have a stacked division like LHW or the HW division now, you don’t necessarily need a clear-cut No. 1 contender, as long as you can make a strong argument in their favor.

gonzaga has all the potential in the world

he just needs to work on his will power (however you do that?) and carry on fighting instead of quitting

gonzaga is easily my fav fighter by far

by ufcaddict on Oct 13, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Will power or heart is not something you can work on, you either have it or you don’t and Gabe doesn’t.

by David W-S on Oct 13, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

JDS is a FOCKING ANIMAL! He dissected cro cop. He was surgical with his boxing!

I dont see JDS losing for a while now or until he gets matched up with a dominant wrestler. if He beats Gonzaga, I want to see him beat the Fock out of Mir or Kongo…anyone would do!

JDS is a future champ. No doubt about it!

This is shaping into one of my favorite cards of all time!

by john G on Oct 13, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Hectic… why do you say this is a dangerous matchup for him just because it has a good chance to go to the ground. you must not know Dos Santos very well.. Junir isnt just a striker. Yeah he’s one of the most danderous strikers in the heavyweight division but he is well versed on the ground too. Did you forget that he trains with the Nog bro’s…

by belfort_fan on Oct 13, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO JDS is just a smaller version of Carwin and Carwin was getting schooled by Gonzo till he got caught. I see this fight playing out the same way, plus or minus the KO. JDS has the same chance Carwin had. I think it will be a great match. As for how JDS would do against Brock, we just have to see how Carwin does. I don’t see JDS bringing anything to that fight that Carwin doesn’t have and JDS is smaller and slightly less powerful. If Carwin can’t handle Brock, I don’t see how Junior could. This match will be way more exciting than seeing either of these guys get pummelled by Brock.

Dang this card keeps getting better and better, my first UFC, can’t wait !

Gonzaga will be put down hard. JDS by TKO.

by OJR on Oct 13, 2009 8:06 AM EDT up reply actions

What did JDS do in the Cro Cop fight that was that impressive? Don’t know if i missed something but to me his striking looked pretty sloppy and it was only that Mirko was terrible that he won.

by Nick J on Oct 13, 2009 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions

You are obviously a GG fan. That’s fine. GG has not been impressive at all (minus the CC fight).

by OJR on Oct 13, 2009 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

OJR, I don’t understand the criticism of JDS’s performance against Cro Cop either, apparently outclassing a K-1 legend in the stand-up and forcing him to quit the fight and possibly fighting period is not impressive. I bet the same people will have an excuse when Gabe inevitably folds yet again in a big fight.

by David W-S on Oct 13, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I actually think Gonzaga would have had a chance against Nogueira, but against Junior naah, he’s gonna lose again.

by RoBerto on Oct 12, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

Roberto, I think otherwise. Nogueira has arguably the best jitz in the division.
We think the same though when it comes to the result. Napao will fold.

by Syd on Oct 13, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

arguably? who can argue with Nog having the best jits at HW? Mir didn’t want to go to the ground with him, even when Nog was dying of the black plague.

by shonuff on Oct 13, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I think gonzaga is gonna take this santos didnt impress me to much against cro cop I was expecting him to steam roll through cro cop but it took him a while to finish him plus cro cop was realy not there mentally im really looking foward to this though

by Nor Cal Mexican on Oct 12, 2009 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

I’m one of the biggest Gabriel Gonzaga fans in the world. That being said, it’s so hard to have faith in him.

Nevertheless, I’ll go with Napao to get back on track!

Can’t wait for this one!

by Steve Shamrock on Oct 12, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

He didn’t knock Cro Cop out who doesn’t even fight back anymore he didn’t impress me in that fight or when he was sparring with Shogun. I dunno maybe its just me but I don’t see him being able to go far enough I pick Gonzaga

by SlapKO on Oct 12, 2009 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

yeah im taking gonzaga in this one too.

by Jared on Oct 13, 2009 7:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Dos Santos will crush Gonzaga, who doesn’t have much or a chin or much heart when the fight gets tough…

by hankd on Oct 12, 2009 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

The only person to truly KO gonzaga is Carwin, so how does that make him a weak chinned fighter? The other loses are tko’s, WErdum had him mounted both times. Couture had his nose caved in and had beaten him for 3 rounds. So where in those 4 loses to a weak chin come into play?

by Da Monkey on Oct 13, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

If Gonzaga loses this one I doubt he will ever end up on a main card in the UFC again..In his last 2 fights he lost 2 Crawin even after having him on toast , then kicked a fat brock lesnar stunt double in the nuts and then beat him down .. GG has been less than impressive

by yukdog on Oct 12, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

Don’t get me wrong I like Dos Santos atleast he deserves some of the hype unlike those of you out ther who claim Duffee is the next best thing because he’s big and knocked out a nobody who had his hands down like an idiot

by SlapKO on Oct 12, 2009 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

Another win for Cigano.

by Oil Pimp on Oct 12, 2009 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

gonzaga’s going to surprise us all (well not me) when he kicks JDS’ head into the crowd. GG by vicious KO.

by jayy on Oct 13, 2009 12:43 AM EDT reply actions

Gabe is vicious and more well-rounded than he gets credit for, but I don’t think he’ll ever be able to pull that same rabbit out of that same hat now that people know he’s got it. The only reason he caught CroCop with that was that CroCop thought he was fighting a grappler and never imagined Gabe was capable of kicking that high.

by shonuff on Oct 13, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

give your head a shake, Gabe will never beat anybody relevant again.

by Oil Pimp on Oct 13, 2009 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

Actually I hope Dos Santos wins I am getting sick of Gonzagas inconsistency

by SlapKO on Oct 13, 2009 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

This is a good fight to for Dos Santos the UFc is taking their time but still testing Dos Santos. Posible comeback fight for Gonzaga. Cain Velasquez is easily the most over hyped and over rated heavyweight fight aside from Kimbo.

by zack on Oct 13, 2009 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

Wow crazy fight
I like gonzaga stylewise
But dos santos is a hungry man

If it goes past 2nd I got jds by tko

by phenomenal angel on Oct 13, 2009 1:08 AM EDT reply actions

Dos Santos looked shiity real shiity vs Crocop so ima have to go with Gonzaga even though Gonzaga is probably one of the most if not thee most overrated HW.

by Khaos_Warrior on Oct 13, 2009 1:45 AM EDT reply actions

I agree….Cro Cop was a shell of himself but still landed some good straight lefts and never really got hurt just quit….Gabe looks great when fighting C level fighters….still a good fight….winner should get Cain after he destroys Ben….
PS Cain weighed 239 when he fought Kongo…no way he makes 205

by Robert(1) on Oct 13, 2009 9:45 AM EDT reply actions

gabe is much better than JDS. nobody is giving him (gonzaga) a chance… crocop looked absolutely horrid against dos santos and junior could barely stop him. gonzaga is one of the most well rounded fighters in HW so i guess we’ll see if dos santos is well rounded as well!

by jayy on Oct 13, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions

I’m just pumped that this has KTFO written all over it!!! @ this point I don’t necessarily care who wins. Just a ko and the rest of this immaculate card is fine by me.

by Daniel worby on Oct 13, 2009 11:14 AM EDT reply actions

jds will win via knockout/gonzaga gassing hardcore after the first 5 minutes. gonzaga has all the tools but for some reason, sticks with a crappy camp. gonzaga would be a contender again if he would leave “team link” and go to ATT or AKA or Jackson or something. change it up napao cause link ain’t doing nothing for you anymore.

by JB on Oct 13, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

I think this is a great match up between two evenly matched guys. I don’t understand you guys who say either of these fighters or their fights are overrated. I don’t ascribe to the view espoused by many here that JDS is the second coming of Christ, but I also don’t agree with those who said he looked bad against CroCop. He looked a bit over-cautious, but against CroCop that’s not timidity, that’s just wisdom. With the help of a slippery mat, he managed to neutralize and avoid CroCop’s powerbombs and mount a successful offense of his own. He took CroCop far enough out of his game to make him quit. Neither Nog nor Fedor ever made CroCop cry “uncle”. Give the boy his props. I was impressed he came out of the fight alive, much less victorious!
