Oi! UFC confirms Australia event in the works for 2010

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues its quest for world domination after confirming that a future event will be staged from the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia, according to The Sydney Herald.

The venue, formerly known as the Sydney SuperDome, can seat up to 21,000 fans and was recently contacted by Zuffa about a possible date in February 2010, according to the report.

From UFC president of the British division Marshall Zelaznik:

"It's going to happen, we're coming. Planning is in effect, we've had a number of strategy meetings and we are on the verge of retaining some key partners in Australia."

The arena is probably best known for playing host to gymnastics and basketball for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as well as its frequent WWE wrestling shows.

Despite the recent confirmation, the Outback has long been on Zuffa’s radar. UFC President Dana White first commented on a possible trip down under to the boys at knucklepit.com during a media conference for UFC 84 back in early 2008.

Here’s a snip:

We’re focused on Germany, the Philippines and Australia next. The Philippines is definitely happening. We’re working on that right now. Australia and Germany, those three are right now.

Germany played host to UFC 99 back on June 13 from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne while a Philippines show is currently in the works. If an Australian event comes to fruition by next year, one has to imagine that Brazil and Japan are not far behind for "The world's fastest growing sport."

Stay tuned.

replace goldberg with Micheal Shavello !!!

by Jared on Oct 12, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Ditto, that Shavello guy is my new favourite commentator. Unlike Goldie he is witty and knows what he’s talking about, a Shavello-Rogan broadcast would be legendary and the funniest commentary ever.

by David W-S on Oct 12, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Mike Schiavello is the goddamn boss!

by RoBerto on Oct 12, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Schiavello is a clown, are you guys kidding?

by davomaniac on Oct 13, 2009 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Bisping-Sinosic II in the co-main event, this time Elvis will be the “hometown hero”.

Prepare yourselves for The Aussie Hand Grenade Marcus Davis.

I can just see it now, Davis ditching his guinness for a pint of fosters and coming out to the Neighbours theme.

by glen dagger on Oct 18, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

good news but they should def drop Germany, football is too big around there and the Klitschko brothers are huge.

by RoBerto on Oct 12, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah I know, I mean Vitali is about 6ft 7in and Wladimir is 6ft 6. Both pretty big.

by Nick J on Oct 12, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

haha, yup!

by RoBerto on Oct 12, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

They’re small compared to the 7ft Valuev, hopefully Haye will smash him in Germany to make up for the Holyfield robbery and the Hayemaker can then finally fight the Klitschko Bros instead of talking about it.

It is good too see the UFC putting on shows all over the world, but i hope we are not expected to shell out the PPV cash for all of these shows that are on a massive time delay.

by Psyqo78 on Oct 12, 2009 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

So who’s gonna come out to "land down under?’ I bet at least 4-5 fighters do.

by DownUnder on Oct 12, 2009 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

You do realize that UFC is an American corporation, and we really don’t owe you shit. Enjoy watching Sotiropoulis headline the card.

by PW on Oct 12, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

‘We dont really owe you shit’? WTF?
is that you dana? lol

next you are going to say ‘you’ American’s own MMA… and you wonder why you can’t get your foot in the door in japan…

by RLL on Oct 12, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

UFC is an American corporation, and your buddy above there is spouting off like Dana and UFC somehow owe him a live event. They don’t. They go where they choose. Again, enjoy Sotiropoulis.

by PW on Oct 12, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Anyway Pdub wat up bro?
I’m gonna bet your mama’s left nut that Sotiropoulis ain’t main eventing nothing

by Fight Club on Oct 12, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

he wont headline…but you can bet that he will be on the card

by salamagogo on Oct 12, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

NIce little chain of comments – I wonder if the pro-yanks above have ever travelled outside of North America LOL I am really looking forward to watching the live event, it will be on a Sunday afternoon for sure as cagedkiwi below has said. I see Forest, Wanderlei, Vitor on this card :)

by DownUnder on Oct 12, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

You’ll be lucky to get that DownUnder, the only big name we have is Couture and for our first card was Cro Cop. Chances are you’ll get a few decent fights with a preliminary card filled with local prospects and journeymen, wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Sinosic is given one last chance with the UFC (to be fair to Elvis he deserves a spot on the roster more than Baroni) and George is pretty much guaranteed to be on the undercard as he’s the Australian Bisping.

by David W-S on Oct 12, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Some good points, however, Australia is almost identical to the UK and Canada (all part of the Commonwealth) and we are likely to get a Bisping, Hardy, etc … to be honest, I just hope for a few decent names …. so excited to finally have the UFC out here ….

by DownUnder on Oct 12, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear Satiropolis is fighting Paul “That’s not a knife” Hogan in the co-main event!

by shonuff on Oct 13, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Time delay will not be an issue. 1pm sunday afternoon in sydney
is 8pm saturday in las vegas. Have the fight on a sunday afternoon. I am in new zealand, and all the ufc ppv are live on sunday afternoon at 3pm. Cost$24.95 nz dollars which is 16usdollars. They are so cheap for us It does not matter if the card is crap.

YAY!!!!!!!!! A release date on the Philippine UFC Event PLease!!!

Bilisan niyu na at pumunta na kayu dito sa amin!!!!

by Noir on Oct 12, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

Fightburger dot com rumoured a couple of weeks ago that Wanderlei Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyama could be heading UFC Australia. Also the site said that Matt Serra vs Frank Trigg could be happening down under.

by DELUXE on Oct 12, 2009 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

Sotriopolous on the main card against a decent fighter if he beats Jason Dent. Other possible Aussie fighters could include Brad Morris and Elvis (of course) are the most recent aussies in the ufc..what about that heavyweight islander guy..soa something?

by Goggles on Oct 12, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

far out, i really hate Sydney Morning herald. Did any of you guys read their hit-piece on mma?

they called “Ground and pound” in the article, “pound and ground”

The douchebag experts and their comments in the article, sounds like the americans back in the 90s.

by dazza on Oct 13, 2009 3:20 AM EDT reply actions

I hope this works out. A lot of people over in Australia don’t seem to know what UFC is. The UFC seems to be taking over the world slowly!
