Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic: Fighting is a matter of life and death

Props: Fighters Only

Quoteworthy:

"I was very, very disturbed after the loss to Dos Santos. I was in such a state that I wished to hang myself in my hotel room so I would be gone. Three losses in my last seven fights is nothing but a disaster to me. That’s a terrible score and I’m not happy about it. I already know some things that I did wrong both in the fight and in the preparation for the fight, but there are many questions that remain to be answered. I am seriously thinking about hiring a psychiatrist to help me out. I have already made some calls about it ... I will make some changes in my training, because I wish to fight twice more in the UFC. I am a fighter, and I will find the motivation and strength I need ... If someone offered me millions of dollars to quit my career right now I would not accept it. [Fighting] is my life and I don’t know any other way to live."

Former PRIDE FC superstar, Mirko Filipovic, reflects on his state of mind following his submission (verbal) loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. He was beaten to the punch, and pretty much beat up, in what essentially turned out to be a striking match for two-plus rounds. The Croatian waved off the Brazilian in the third after eating a brutal knee to the face that wiped out his vision. It marked his third loss inside the Octagon in five attempts — a far cry from the world beater who was scalping his opponents just three years ago under the Pride banner. In fact, he has not defeated a top-level fighter since he made Josh Barnett quit at "Final Conflict Absolute," which earned him the Pride FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix Championship. Could this be the end of the road of Cro Cop’s long and distinguished professional career, which dates back to the mid 1990s? Or will he rise from the ashes and give it one more shot?

Ah God damnit. I’m a HUGE Mirko fan but c’mon, even I’ve accepted that the road is over, and I’ve been in denial for about a year at least.

Letter for letter, this is EXACTLY how I feel.

Time to go fishing in Zegreb and hang up the shins.

can’t wait to see fedor hanging himself after he gets his ass handed to him in the ufc and realises all the bluffing has been called.

Ill always enjoy watching a CRO COP fight and would love to see him fight again but as a top contender, not no more.

Yeah this guy needs to retire, chill the fuck out and take life easy. If you consider suicide after a loss then you shouldn’t be fighting no more.

Yeah, can’t say I’m a Cro Cop fan but I respect what he’s accomplished and his desire to fight. It seems like he’s mentally very weak. Like, if he doesn’t intimidate his opponent from the beginning, he seems to become intimidated. Then for him to be saying all this afterward as if he should still be the same fighter he once was is kinda crazy. Maybe his psychologist will be the one to tell him that a) He’s getting old, b) he’s one dimensional, c) not every Pride fighter is meant to fight in a cage, d) the sport has already passed him by.

yep, if fighting is a matter of life and death then he should do what’s best for him to win, and that is to fight guys his own size.

I hate to see such a legend end his career this way, but cro cop has earned the right to continue fighting regardless of his many losses. There are some interesting fights still available for him in the UFC.

I would love to see Mirko vs. Anderson, at a catchweight of 220 lbs.

Mirko is still good enough to be a severely over rated Frank Mir! Mirko always had good td defense, and Mir always lacked in that department. I wouldnt mind seeing Mirko winging kicks at Mir.

I wouldnt mind seeing Cro Cop vs. Kongo 2!

If Big Ben losses to Cain, he would make for a good opponent for Mirko.

He doesnt have to retire…but he needs to be protected. Joe Silva needs to put him in the “RIGHT TYPE” of fights (stylistically), and he can still be entertaining.

If the UFC cuts Mirko, I woud love to see him matched up against mOusasi in a catchweight!

I would also like to see Mirko vs. Sokoudjou

Dana needs to book: mirko vs. KIMBO!!!

If he could only take away the Gonzaga decapatation. He still may be in the game mentally. He has not ever rebounded from it mentally or emotionally. That was the downslope in his career.

by Da Monkey on Oct 11, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Fighting is a very tough way to make a living. The highs and lows are extreme. Losing is particularly harsh, as you are not only alone in the cage, but also a large audience sees whomever loses either submit or be knocked senseless. It’s not for everyone. To be successful in this sport requires supreme confidence and a single-minded focus that blocks out the extreme highs and lows. Mirko has not possessed what is required mentally to succeed for a few years now. When combined with his limitations in the cage, it is an obvious losing formula. Mirko’s lack of desire and confidence have been OBVIOUS in all of his UFC fights. I strongly believe, based on what we’ve heard him say, his unpredictable actions, AND his listless performances in the cage, that he needs to retire from fighting, get his head right and enjoy the rest of his life. I’m saying this as someone who has great respect for Mirko for who Mirko is, as both a fighter and a person.

by CL on Oct 11, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Psychiatrist won’t help here. Jordan Breen over at sherdog put this whole Mirko thing into brilliant perspective.

The issue with Mirko has nothing to do with his mindset or any external factor besides, his technical game and striking. He was always thought of a dominant striker in MMA but in hindsight, it was mostly a myth. Yes he comes from K-1 after an average career there. But for the majority of Pride, he spent it fighting guys who were completely unequiped to deal with 1. his striking 2. his athleticism. His striking was really nothing more than left straight, head hunting, left leg kicksd and when someone closes in do whatever it takes to explose out and cirle out. The only man who had a technical enough understanding of striking was Fedor who completely shut down his game and dominated that fight. Otherwise from Nak to Minowaman to Barnett to Wand, that same strategy worked to a Tee.

In the UFC, the GG fight – he was busy headhunting to see that Gonzaga had watched video on him. He kept walking away from his power and made him walk into the head kick. Cheick Kongo kept throwing left kicks over and over to the body landing at will. His arsenal in terms of MT was the most diverse that Cro Cop had faced and it showed because cro cop was completely shut down. Finally JDS used solely boxing to work his body up and down while taking away his distance, not letting him set up his high kick by maintaining distance until he could pin him or clinch and cutting him off from circling out. All these things are factors in the way his technical game evolved. For so many years it was worked against overmatched grapplers and brawlers. Now it simply doesn’t work against guys with competent and rounded striking arsenals.

Long rant, not meant to take away anything from Cro Cop. His status is important in the annals of MMA but when i look at it without that veil, his legend and aura was more of the product of his HL reel than his actual fighting skills if that makes any sense. For those who disagree please tell me where you believe am wrong. This is an important discussion we Mirko fans need to have to put his legacy to rest.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 11, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I am going to have to respectfully say that is bullshit. Crocop was an amazing fighter, he took Fedor to a decision and defeated a who’s who of that era of MMA. He is getting old now and the new guys are stronger and more well rounded.
This whole trend I have seen over the last few years is disgusting and ridiculous to say the least. Every time one of our heros ages and can’t hang with the young guys we dissect all of his wins and say how he was never that good.
Truth is you can pull apart anyone’s record and say it was all good luck or match ups if you try hard enough. I will not ever believe that the Crocop’s and Chuck’s were just lucky though. These guys were the greats and to take anything away from what they did is crap. Fact is, they were better than most they faced when they were on their game. Let’s stop trying to make them into “lucky” winners and dissecting their great runs.

by The Dude on Oct 11, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey i never said he wasn’t a great fighter and accomplished a lot in his time. It takes skills to beat guys like josh barnett or almost KO big nog but there is a big reason as to why his success hasn’t come over to the US. And in all of his fights in pride – which one aside from the Fedor fight wasn’t he a clear and overwhelming betting favorite. He hasn’t had to deal with too many fighters who could put up strong fights. I say you are suppose to pull apart their record and ask questions if you want to find answers. Throwing your hands up and saying he’s just old is a disservice because what did he suddenly just get old as soon as he came to the US? What about when he blew Tatsuya Mizuno doors off in Japan? Then he fights another competent striker in Overeem and gets clobbered? Comes back to the US and mashes out Mustapha Al Turk who is in the mold of many of his previous fights – grappler unequipped to deal with his hands and athleticism. He didn’t seem to have a single ounce of diminished skill and killer instinct in that fight. Being old is not something you can turn on and off.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 11, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

WTF Are you talking about?? In Mirko’s prime he was destroying all comers in devastating fashion. He is an OWGP winner. Who else can claim to have beaten Wand and Barnett in the same night?? Stop trying to diminish his legacy because of his last few fights. The Breen article was complete garbage and has been refuted more times than i can count. Expect to see the exact same article by the same writer once Nog, Fedor, GSP and the other greats start their decline.

by stevo on Oct 11, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t expect Cro Cop to want more UFC fights, and i completely agree NNR! I have to admit that i was scared for Mirko when he fought Kongo because he had never fought guys like that in Pride and i saw that loss coming, they should have given him an easier fight IMO after that brutal GG loss.

Cro Cop is exactly like Chuck Liddell was! when you’re young you can compensate for technical errors by using your physical abilities but as you get older you get slower and you lose that.

by RoBerto on Oct 11, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting analysis- I definitely agree that Cro Cop’s game has not evolved and adapted to the point where he can compete with the newest breed of MMA fighters. I also agree that he has lost his aggressive edge, which has been missing since that GG loss.

Part of Cro Cop’s scariest attributes were his hands, which were pinpoint and powerful. The reason people underrate his hands is that he has so many highlight kicks. If he can find a way to harness his aggressiveness and do more than simply look for an easy knockout, he will again be a force to reckoned with.

Also, Cro Cop did not simply have an “average” career in K1. K1 strikers are the best in the world and Cro Cop has defeated the likes of Remy Bonjasky, Peter Aerts, and Musashi. He even defeated Jerome LeBanner on his first outing in K1. That proves that he was easily one of the world’s most “elite” strikers.

by cayc2k on Oct 11, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Stevo you still haven’t provided anything other than saying stop trying to diminish his legacy. I didn’t say he never beat great fighters and other legends – wand, barnett, saku, igor all those guys are fn legends and had top rankings at their weight or P4P. But how many had the skills to stand with him? Unless they got him down then it was over. Even big nog wasn’t equiped to handle his striking back then he won that fight on heart. That’s just not the case now. Anytime he fought a great striker – he hasn’t done good from fedor to hunt to kongo to overeem. I simply don’t buy the he got old as soon as “he came to the US story.” You also said that article was refuted more times than you could count. I would like to know these points because i don’t remember any other arguments against them besides “he’s a legend stop pointing things out about him.” YES HE IS A LEGEND AND WON’T STOP BEING ONE but there is a clear reason as to why he can’t seem to hang with these guys anymore which have nothing to do with mindstate and other vague generalities like “wanting it anymore.” And yes there will be a day when guys like fedor, Nog and GSP won’t be able to hang anymore. And there will also be clear reasons as to why!

by NameNotRequired on Oct 11, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely some great analysis on this thread… I personally think it’s a cumulation of most of the issues mentioned, style, age, psy, adaptation, etc… I think the best move for Cro-Cop, besides retiring or seeing a shrink, would be to drop to 205lbs and join a camp like greg jacksons for a year… just do something completely different to renew his fighting spirit. I’m pulling for the guy, but all I see is a broken man that won’t make any of those type of changes.

by DAVE A on Oct 11, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

name not required is right, the sport has evolved, mirko is barely big enough to fight LHW anymore, mark spitz in his prime wouldnt beat olympic female swimmers anymore, as his times have been surpassed by most 15 yr old female olympians. Mirko was great in his time, as was chuck but fighters didnt have an understanding of striking back then, now rthe athletes are way bigger than mirko, and more technical, it all spell crushing defeats each time he gets in the ring, mirko is the same fighter as 5yrs ago, its his competion that is so much better.

YUP YUP YUP CUT THE WEIGHT!

by DAVE A on Oct 11, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Easy for you to say. These UFC guys have been cutting weight since their High School wrestling teams. CroCop never had to cut weight before. Weight cutting is not something you suddenly teach your body to do at his age. Its a very taxing process and it takes even a young body some serious time to get used to that process of extreme dehydration and sudden rehydrating. He should just fight the big LHWs at a catch weight. It’s not like he’s making a title run and there’s no reason for two 220 lb guys to cut weight for a non-title fight. Just doesn’t make any sense. He’ll still be small against Forrest. He’d also be a great rebound match for Shogun after his upcoming loss.

by shonuff on Oct 12, 2009 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

You could tell Mirko’s head just wasn’t in the game for Dos Santos. He’s got the skills, but something’s off. I think if he pulls a GSP and finds his motivation (and confidence) again, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with, in any weight class.

by whatev on Oct 11, 2009 8:04 AM EDT reply actions

GSP didn’t need motivation. That punch from Serra hit him with was behind the ear…which was GSPs fault the way he ducked it.

by DolFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure if he still has it or not, because he never ‘pulls the trigger’. In his last couple fights, he stood in front of his opponents, and didn’t throw any kicks or punches, just received plenty of both.

He still has something small left to offer, I agree at 205 but he knows he can’t be a champ again and thats hard. Always been a big fan of Cro Cop. I hope he can figure things out and get back to the old Cro Cop before he has to hang it up. He still seems to have a good chin, good td defense, but he has to get back to pulling the trigger on offense. Just pushing people off of himself the whole fight isn’t going to get him any wins. Dos won that last fight simply because he threw more offense at Cro Cop imo and Cro Cop did VERY LITTLE offensively in that fight.

by brandon childers on Oct 11, 2009 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

CroCop has almost always done very little offensively. He’s not a machine gun fighter like Thiago or Vitor, he’s a sniper. He carries a few big rounds, loads them in the chamber one at a time, and waits for his opponent to step into his crosshairs. CroCop’s problem is the same as Chuck’s. It’s not that the sport has evolved, that’s BS. Its that those guys have used the same very effective offense for 10 years and that means every joe-shmo rookie with a decent training camp has 10 years worth of footage to study to figure out how to avoid getting caught in the same trap that his last 20 predecessors did. There are only so many possible solutions for a given problem and with each fighter they beat, CroCop and Chuck ruled out one of the options. The guys who are beating them now found the solution by process of elimination building on the research of their fallen predecessors.

by shonuff on Oct 12, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

If he came back he would need to ditch his old camp its obvious they havent been preparing him properly, the whole pushing your opponent away to create space for his kicks is good in theory but you have to pull the trigger to make it work.

He more then likely should retire but he could shatter the keyboard warriors favourite hero Frank Mir and finally put his ego in check.

by The_Devil_You_Know on Oct 11, 2009 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

CroCop has never been a frequent trigger-puller. He’s a sniper. But he was severely hindered in the JDS match by the fact that the cage floor was slicker than snot. Very hard to throw high kicks if your support leg is slipping out from under you. That’s why you never see the Rockets in IceCapades.

by shonuff on Oct 12, 2009 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

This doesn’t bode well. Immediately after losing to Dos Santos, Mirko was talking about retirement and going fishing. He should stick to that.
This is a man who had an illustrious career, but the game has passed him by.
If he’s become suicidal he should consult a pyschiatrist, and hopefully that mental health professional can convince him to let go of what he once had in the ring. Can you imagine how pyschologically devastated he’ll be if he loses either or both of his remaining two fights in the UFC? It will be even worse, especially if he’s put in the octogon against underdogs, even at 205, so he could go out on a winning note (that’s if Dana’s even willing to do him any favours) and then he drops those fights. He’ll be even more of a mess.
Time to go, Mirko.

by squid on Oct 11, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

too dangerous. The reason Dana forced Chuck into retirement is that he has no chin anymore and Dana doesn’t want him taking any life-altering brain damage. There’s still nobody in the UFC more capable of turning Chuck into a vegetable than CroCop. CroCop may not be as tough to beat as he once was, but in terms of potential health risks, CroCop is still the most dangerous man in the UFC.

If Cro cop would just fight at 205 he could probably rejuvenate his career. I don’t understand what he is thinking.
The UFC could have some awesome matchup for him.
Cro cop vs Machida, Evans, Rampage, Griffen, Silva are all very marketable fights.

Cro cop is wasting his time in the heavyweight division. He has won 1 of 4 fights.

On another note, the UFC needs one more weight class. They should change the light heavyweight divison to 215 and make a cruiserweight divison at 200.

CroCop lost the first fight cause Goldy and Rogan told him he was fighting a wrestler and he wasn’t expecting a gorilla like that to be able to throw a high kick. He won’t make that mistake again.

Mirko Cro Cop is a Legend, however;

MMA is much more competitive now. Giving guys 20-30 lbs every fight is too much now since everyong is so well rounded especially since he’s one dimensional. If he can drop to 205, that would let him fight guys the same size as him before the cut.

He has lost his aggressiveness because he got caught by GG. Fighters need that confidence. He has not pushed the action at all since without some hesitance.

He needs to adapt and train with one of the top camps in order to win a few fights before he retires.

I’m hoping for a Cropcop comeback, same for Liddell, but I feel a changing of the guard is happening. Who should he fight if he comes back at 205? and at heavyweight?

205 and a new camp would be perfect. At HW put him on the undercard. I don’t want to suffer through it.

It’s sad reading this from Mirko. He is a legend of the sport and need to come to terms with the fact that no one stays on top forever. I know it’s got to be hard to deal with because Matt Hughes and Chuck aren’t taking it so well either.

fighting is not life or death dummy. you fight becaue you choose to, not because you have to. the dude needs to get his head on straight. i hope he gets the help he needs.

that picture is terrible. It looks like he’s taking a dump and got one caught sideways.

Hey, who said Kimbo vs Mirko ? XD WTF?! That’s just stupid dude. Kimbo should be able to fight again, and Mirko would KILL Kimbo, that’s no lie guys, that’s fact. The man may be old guys, and there are new fighters everyday, but hey! This guy trains everyday just like everyone else, he’s been working with some of the best fighters in the world, he knows what he’s doing guys. He needs more ground game yes, but what he really needs is his mind, more offense(Remember Dos santos did not look that beautiful after the fight either), more speed and to throw his kicks more, not just for the head but for the body and legs, that hurts more than u think(Especially mirkos, i mean look at them, they are the biggest legs i’ve ever seen!), it tears ur body and affects everything really. HE can’t drop to 205, he would kill(Literally) everyone in the division, just like Remy would if he entered the ufc, that’s just cold hard facts guys. It would be awesome to see him knock the shit out of Wanderlei again though(also i always wanted to see him against Randy, that would be awesome, two of the best of all times collide :) Chuck would be funny to, but just because to put him to sleep forever!), that guy is so ugly he deserves a beating, but then again Nogueira is uglier and deserves it more. That would be a great fight since Nougeira got whopped silly til he got lucky and got that armbar. Funny shit. Anyways, if Mirko got his head, speed and offense back in his game he have much more to give, the guy can still fight, and that really good, that’s for sure!

Mirko would smash all of the LHW wrestlers? No posting drunk.

I would love to see him return, you can clearly see in the last ufc fights mentally he has no looked to be there you can see it in his eyes.
A guy of Mirco’s caliber, needs to be on his game mentally, everything is a mental game.

Example: St.Pierre he lost…HUGHS? and SIERRA? are you kidding me, then came back to make the look like rookies!

Hey it could happen, I’m DEF. routing for Crocop to come back mentally strong and dominate, even if he was to lose, like Chuck, I want to see him come back and retire on a fight he is ahppy with.

Get em’ you CRAZY CROATION!
