UFC Quick Quote: Shane Carwin is a 'fighter,' Brock Lesnar is a 'draw'

"I feel like I have paid my dues and so have a lot of fighters waiting for their shot. Brock is what they call a 'Draw,' he sells tickets, I am what they call a 'Fighter,' I fight who I am told to fight the way my coaches train me too. We are different people and we treat people different. To me this sport is as much about respect and honor as it is paychecks sound bites."
-- Shane Carwin sounds off in a recent interview with FiveOuncesofPain.com about his simmering feud with UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. The war of words kicked off when Carwin criticized Lesnar's questionable post-fight antics after defeating Frank Mir earlier this year. Lesnar has responded in kind, saying Carwin "hasn't fought anybody" and that he's just a Division II wrestler. At this rate, the back-and-forth will more than likely come to a boil way before the pair is locked inside the Octagon together at UFC 106 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21. Will the fight live up to the hype?

Lesnar was thrown into the deep end right off the start, Carwin was coddled until he fought Gonzaga…it seems more like sour grapes then anything.

carwin should really just stop talking. I don’t think he’s stopped running his mouth about Lesnar for weeks, and that can be a dangerous thing to do (ask Mir).

Dang rite Caesar!
We all know that it’s a dangerous thing to run your mouth before fighting Lesnar.
But Brock is a genuine A-Hole who should be trash trash-talked and beaten up at the same time.
I know Brock isn’t gonna outwrestle him[NCAA Divisions thrown out the window once you get punched in the face]…

Shane is not anymore of a fighter than brock. He obviously is trying to spin things and create an image. You both are essentially the same. Except Brock has had more top level competion. Fighting the leading of the Mongoles is not top competition. Shane needs to focus on the fight instead of falling into the trap of “hyping” the fight. Shane is making himself look stupid. At the end of the day brock is just as normal as anyone else and to proclaim the brock is “this” and brock does “that” is just rediculus and essentially makes shane look stupid…Brock is a better athlete, he’s more explosive and obviously has had more extensive training. And he can afford it. So shane needs to stop pretending like he’s on a different level when he hasn’t fought jack shit.
by Chris on Oct 10, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Carwin is under the impression that the leader of the Mongols is more serious than a bronze medalist judo player…olympion or a real athlete. I mean don’t get me wrong mi so kim or however you spell his name isn’t a domintate figher but he is a real athlete unlike the leader of the Mongols. Shane needs to understand that Brock is the real deal and obvioulsy can afford to train with the best. Brock is an explosive athlete with much faster quick reflex muscles. I mean you can obvioulsy see it on tape. Shane is luck Brock is the promoter he is or Shane would never be on a card that will do 800,000 plus buys. Think about the publicity that creates for Shane. Shane enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Shane, come on. Stop talking. You are going to get blasted like no tomorrow. Brock is definitely a fighter, he just happens to be a slight maniac once he gets going. None the less, he is a beast and you will get a taste of being man handles soon. Maybe after he treats you like a 150lb man people will realize his strength and speed is phenomenal.

Could not agree more….. Brock has also fought every man put in front of him, except he was fighting top competition since day one. Mir, Herring,Randy, Mir. Sure he has not had many fights, but by the time his career is done, he will have one of the most impressive resumes’ in MMA.
People think that Brock’s stand up is bad? Look at how sloppy Carwin is, Brock will be able to take him down at will and keep him there and punish him until Carwin quits.

I used to like Carwin and his humble approach, but now, he comes off worst than Brock. What a clown. seriously, I dont even like Carwin any more and I used to be a BIG FAN. The guy has fought 1/10th the leve of comp that Brock has fought, yet he is THE REAL FIGHTER, and BRock is just a DRAW? Get the Fock outta here…I dont know who’s resume is crappier, Carwin, or King Mo..hahahahaha
Carwin after what Brock did at UFC 100, you had the chance to come off as the good guy Hero, instead of staying with that role you chose to become the Jealous villian..Fock you shane, you have officially lost a fan!
The things coming out of your mouth are no better then what Brock did at UFC 100…The difference is that at least Brock entertained me…you just sound like a hoe…and I dont want to hear people defending this douche by saying that he is HYPING A FIGHT, BS!!! No need to take it there. This battle between GIANTS will promote itself! I really hope that Brock DEMOLISHES HIM!

Herring is the only real comp brock has faced. I give him props for that but I don’t consider Captain paycheck all that great (please don’t list off his accomplishements, i know them) and Mir doesn’t belong in the UFC. Carwin wins this fight IMO, when lunch boxes start getting thrown we’ve seen that Carwin can recover from bad positions but for Lesnar his size and wrestling have been enough to buy him time. Now that they won’t he doesn’t seem to me like a guy who can take a massive shot. But i have nothing to base that on except gut instinct from years of watching combat sports.

I’m with you on this john…Carwin has been running his mouth an awful lot lately ever since this fight was announced. I used to like Carwin a lot but his contant tirades about Brock not being a real fighter and whatnot are ridiculous. Sure Brock only has 5 fights but 4 of those 5 have been against solid “names” at the very least. Carwin has one decent win against GG and GG hasn’t exactly done too much since Cro Cop. I think this fight sells itself with the 2 biggest HWs in the division going up against each other. I could do without these dillusional comments.

To say that Brock isn’t a fighter, is absolutely ridiculous. The guy gave up millions of dollars to try his hand at MMA. He’s taken on all comers—a UFC legend; a former UFC champion with arguably the best jujitsu in the division; a seasoned veteran who’s fought the best in the world.
You can question Brock’s antics and whether he’s a good ambassador for the sport, but to say he isn’t a fighter is asinine. I hope Carwin is just saying that to promote the fight. If he really believes it, this fight isn’t going to be competitive.

Fact of the matter is that in the grand scheme of things, neither Carwin or Brock have accomplished anything! But I am more impressed with Brocks resume so Carwin should STFU and be greatful that he got an undeserving title shot…just like Brock!

Yea this sport is about respect blah blah blah but it’s still a fight sport and there is no rule written anywhere that says you need to be classy or do jack sh!t for anybody. For me HW will always mean Big Nog and Fedor so outside of fights it’s kinda hard for me to care about these little cat fights between grown @ss men.

I don’t think Shane’s been trying to hype the fight with these comments. He knows Brock puts asses in seats, so the pressure’s not on him to promote. Instead, I believe he’s just trying to establish some sort of personality for himself, so that he might become a “draw” like Brock one day. Unfortunately, his efforts have been pretty feeble in this department… just as Shane himself will seem against Brock come Nov. 21.

brock has not fought top competition. Mir is not a top 45 guy, hearing is past his prime so is randy. and he fought randy after he left mma for about a year. UFC has a lot of heavyweight fighters that are still young and not experienced, they need more figts/experience. until than brock will rule the devision

Mir can beat anybody besides Fedor on Strikeforces roster and compete against the best on the UFC roster Infact Mir can beat anybody on Fedors list and has beat the top guys Fedor has faced tiko do you have any idea what MMA is like really LOL?
by Beaver on Oct 10, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
fedor has beat big nog twice when nog was the champion. mir beat nog when he wasn’t close to 100%. fedor beat crocop when he was kickin the s*** out of everyone. fedor beat hearing in his prime. im tired of people saying fedor hasnt beat anyone. the ppl are professionals, ppl get caught and get KOed even by unworthy apponents. look at what happened to GSP against Serra. fedor has only been rocked once. ppl who say fedor isnt the top heavyweight dont know anything about mma.
by tiko on Oct 10, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fact is tiko if Fedor came in the UFC and won every fight no would be arqueing who the best HW is. Times have changed and you take Fedor out of the picture there would be little arguement that the UFC has the five best HW it’s funny how when Fedor gets put in the picture the HW he is going to face all of a sudden become top fighters? I’m not saying Fedor isn’t a great fighter I’m saying he doesn’t deserve the #1 ranking with talent he has faced lately and is going to in the future. A win over Rogers proves nothing the best HW in Strikeforce besides Fedor right now is Werdum with saying that Werdum has nothing over Fedor and would lose in every phase as his JJ may be better it will be useless against Fedor Rogers has the best chance because like AA he has KO power but it’s a very slim chance.
by Beaver on Oct 10, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
we all know why fedor does not come the ufc. after his contract with m-1 global he might join the ufc until than we wont see the super fights that we all want. its like saying Michael Jordan isnt the greatest of all time because when he played the competition wasnt as good as it is now. fedor hasnt turned down a fight and he has beaten everyone in a convincing fashion. when AA was dominating the heavyweight division dana was on his nuts and saying he is unbeatable. than dana and AA had a fallout and now dana talks crap about AA, and now dana is talking crap about Fedor and everyone is buying into what he says.
in order to be the best you have to beat the best…and until brock beats fedor he will not be the best.
also ppl are saying how ufc is the best mma organization, but during pride days the ufc fighters went to pride most of them have a crappy/losing record
including anderson silva and chuck liddell
by tiko on Oct 10, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that is a ridiculous comment about pride. especially since all the guys that came from pride haven’t really done anything in the UFC. if the UFC guys went to a land where roiding was the norm, and obviously took place, of course they were at some disadvantage.
by newkoba on Oct 10, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
cro cop, wandy, rampage, fedor, big nog, hendo, shogun etc. who was roiding? those are the great fighters in pride.
wandy and cro cop are the only ones with bad records in the ufc because both are past their prime. are you trying to tell me that Wandy in his prime would not dominate the ufc LHW division? the man went on a 4 year winning streak and they fight more fights compared to ufc. the ufc has fighters the only complete once or twice in a year.

MacArthur we seem to be on the same page. Brock isnt at all what everyone thinks he is. to understand how insignificant the Herring win is you’d hafta be familiar with Herrings fight performances and not just his win/loss record. a better understanding of how a broken orbital bone affects ones ability to perform at their best wouldnt hurt either. the win would have been a win for most fighters under those same circumstances. you’d also hafta look at the Randy win from a rational point of view as well. there truly isnt anything impressive about Brock as a fighter outside of his speed for a man his size which would be impressive in most contact sports. all ive seen from Brock is a man with a huge advantage in all the fights he’S been in and he’s still struggled to finish half of them. Carwin on the other hand has DOMINATED 9 out of 10 fights and finished all 10 definitively. you people finding fault in every quote from Carwin are expressing your uncertainty with whether or not Brock is everything you make him out to be. he’s entering a fight where he may not have a clear advantage and youre all overcompensating in your posts in order to mask that. truth be told, Carwin has every tool to negate Brocks strengths and a finishers track-record that should make you biased bastards feel uncomfortable. all i ask is that those of you that are so sure of penis-chests win dont back down and jump ship when your boy finds himself unconcious in the middle of the cage while the belt gets wrapped around the waist of a legitimate champion.
by Machine on Oct 10, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would really like it if you’re right McArthur and Machine. While I lack your confidence, I do think Carwin has a really good chance in this one. I think people may be overestimating Brock’s wrestling advantage, and I really don’t think Brock is faster or more explosive than Carwin. He definitely has the size advantage, and the speed/explosiveness is very close, but I certainly don’t see Brock beating him to the punch. I watched the Brock/Randy fight again last night, and it’s pretty evident Brock doesn’t like to get hit. I think Carwin has more than just a puncher’s chance in this one.
On a separate note, John G, I gotta call you out. You always talk about keeping it real, but after UFC 100 you hated Brock just as much as me, which is pretty bad. Now Carwin is slightly annoying and you’re riding the Brock war-wagon? Come on man, YOU get the fock outta here.

Wow for all of Brocks faults, he is a born fighter. He has been wrestling since he was like 12yrs old. Maybe he has not paid his MMA dues and maybe he misses the whole respect point of martial arts, but to say he simply is a draw and not a fighter is ridiculous. Like Joe Rogan said, if this was the old days (Rome-Times of Germanic Tribes-Vikings-Ghangis Khan) Brock would be top of the food chain and we would all be cowering in fear of him, while he burned the village, rrrraped de horses, rode of on our women, and pruned the hedges of many small villages. I think Carwin has now officiall bitten off more then he could chew. Brocks superior Div. I wrestling is going to prove to be to much for Carwin. Carwin has a punchers chance and will get owned everywhere else. Carwin is going to be the next recepient of facial mince meat. I say this and I don’t even like Brock. I just think he is to strong, to fast, and a much better wrestler, and has grown leaps and bounds in mma compared to Carwin. At the end of this fight he is going to get the Mir treatment for all of his shit talking to….

LOL in MMa you need to know what your opponent is going to throw at you and be able to counter and attack with Brock who does not have the experience has learned quick and his progression is amazing it’s not as simle as wrestling and GnP yes he may make it look that way but the toughest part of the battle is the fight for postioning to your style and Brock is getting better at controling were the fight takes place in very little time. Like GSP he is able to control were the fight takes place to his atvantage much like Barnett has done for years.

PPV buys is really the only thing this sport needs right now. So Brock is very good for MMA overall. The more people watching, the better chance that Affliction, SF or other non-UFC organizations will survive. I always find it funny when a fan says something like “that sort of nonsense should not be associated with mma and I personally dont think he is good for the sport” Why don’t you let the people who are actually participating in the sport decide what the sport should be. This isn’t lawn bowling, if you don’t mind watching BJ lick his opponents blood off his hands or 2 men fighting in general, you have no place to complain about the way a participant talks. ‘oh but he disrespected the sponsors and his wife and whah whah whah.’ That is what people hopped up on adrenaline do, we are just human. Funny, a high percent of you guys probably think Micheal Vick should be free playing football, or Chris Brown should be walking free, but if big bad Brock says a swear word you call for his head? Why so sensitive Nancy?

It wasnt the beer, or the wife comments that I thought were out of place…but imagine a handful of people watching mma, ufc 100 for the first time…see Brock defeat Mur in round 2 and then proceed to scream at his defeated opponent who is still on the ground and then salivate like a rabid dog right in front of the camera…thats good for a sport which is already under heavy criticiszm? I love this sport just as much as everybody else who takes the time to comment on this site…and I respect your opinion…but I dont think Brock is going to be good for this sport, long-term…

I am really sick of self righteous fans and fighters telling people who can be a “real fan” or not. Elitist pricks are found in every walk of life, but it seems in MMA “real fans” cant stand that their precious sport is enjoyed by a new audience. Maybe a kid who only knows Brock from WWE will get into MMA through that, fall in love with it and maybe train and learn something to better himself. Putting qualifiers on being a fan makes you sound like a prick. Reminds me of people who are into a musical artist UNTIL said artist gets famous. Either they cry and tell everyone “I was into them BEFORE everyone else!” (therefore i’m better than you) or “You didn’t get into them until they got popular!” (therefore i’m better than you)
So to summarize: You have no business enjoying this sport if you
-Weren’t into it before TUF
-Like WWE
ect ect
Without new fans becoming Diehards this sport dies. “Draws” who “aren’t fighters” like Brock and Kimbo have done more for the future of this sport than Carwin ever will. Aren’t heroes supposed to SHOW US instead of TELLING US? Tell us you’re a great guy, but what have you done to SHOW IT? Tearing someone down to build yourself up is what this looks like to me.
-Lesnar 2nd Rd TKO

Only man I see beating Brock is Fedor and that won’t happen anytime soon if ever.

Fedors a chubby puss, its a reason Danas been busting his behind offering Fedor all this money and Fedor still hasnt come to the UFC.Hes afraid of tarnishing that artificial image that he has and getting a blemish on his record.Brock would fight anyone anytime,Same as Silva and BJ.Fedors an overated puss.

The fighter fedor has beat is NOG and thats how he claimed the #1 HW in the world wich was valid at one time besides maybe Barnett he was the #1 HW in the world but now he’s been riding the NOG wave way to long it’s time the supposed #1 HW fights the best athletes and fighters in MMA something he has yet to do with the exception of AA who is a good athlete to bad his chin and defence are weak.

to be honest i think Arlovski had that fight 1 of he just would of been more careful,u know carefully picking his shots using his superior boxing to keep fedor at bay.He was doing good exsposing fedors lack of technique on the feet like Griffin did Hermes Franca at l.w. he got crazi and over anxious and paid for it with a brutal i think im still at home cumphy in my bed knock out.lol

I love Brock’s opinion on the Kimbo Nelson fight " It looked like a couple of highschool kids. A bar room brawl. The fat biker dude took his vest off and put ranch dressing on his chest." LOL! How can u not like Brock???

Lesnar is a huge jackass , i hope Carwin beats him and makes Lesnar respect the sport more . Lesnar is nothing more than a cash cow for White to use to draw ratings
by Shankman86 on Oct 10, 2009 12:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If Lesnar is a jackass, Carwin sure is trying to be a BIGGER jackass with his ongoing verbal rants. He just keeps sounding more and more stupid and he’s losing fans by the day.
by Rich on Oct 10, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the guy who says he’s all about respecting his opponent sure isn’t showing his opponent a lot of respect.
and by the way, he IS the champion

people who say brock is inexperienced, if you do the math…brock probably has just as much experience as carwin…carwin is 11-0 but has never been out of the first round…and alot of those fights he finished in less than 2 minutes….i mean hes probably only had 30 true minutes of fight time in his life..
brock went 15 with herring….a full round with randy, a full round with mir, plus the 2 half rounds with mir…plus add the time i his first fight that was like a minute and something…
and they probably both have the same amount of fight experience..

I know Carwin’s hyping himself up but if he doesn’t catch Brock with that right hand he is in for one massive beating!

Herring is a solid fighter, he is just never going to be more then a gatekeeper and definately not a title contender…..Neil Wain looks like my fat uncle, if anything it’s Carwin who hasnt paid his dues yet he is one fight too soon for a title shot.

Carwin isn’t exactly trash talking? This was probably an answer to a question an interviewer asked him. Is he supposed to not answer the guy? It’s not his fault it was posted on this site?
Lmao. Come on guys, you gotta think.
He’s just doing an interview, talking about his fight, ya know, doin’ what he’s sposed to do.

this guy and his god damn respect and honor stfu why isnt lesnar a fighter hes only fought top heavyweights since he got to the ufc this guy seem to be a little jealous to me and hes using lesnars antics at ufc 100 to fuel the fire and make lesnar look like a villain listen carwin no one asked you to be a hero here after all this guys talking i want lesnar to kill this fucking guy war lesnar by strangulation

This is all just more “these guys hate each other” hype before the fight. Whether Carwin is serious with his comments, who knows. I’m sure there’s real “stuff” in his comments, but I’m sure he’s not discouraged by the UFC brass from talkin’ smack…

Hey mmamania you guys have a typo they fight at the bay not the grand other then that you guys rule and brock is going to ground and pound carwin
by David on Oct 10, 2009 4:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
carwin fights who his management tells him to fight, even if it is a tomato can and lesnar wants to fight all the top guys right away. brock is going to kill this goon if he keeps running off at the gumms and i cant wait!!!
by joe daddy on Oct 10, 2009 5:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
carwin won’t stop bitching will he. :) brock will shut him up. carwin is a nobody with a punchers chance. grim has a better chance of beating fedor.

To JONG G : “NNR: We are in agreement that Couture and Mir are NOTHING SPECIAL, but they are probably better then anyone Carwin has ever faced besides GG, so Carwin should STFU. He sounds like a jealous lil hoe.”
they (mir and Randy) are better than anyone carwin has faced excpet gonzaga? randy beat the crap out of gonzaga i think that makes him BETTER THAN GG
do you even follow mma??
by TheDragon on Oct 10, 2009 6:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
DIDN’T RANDY BEAT THE DOG SHIT OUT OF GONZAGA??? carwin came very close to losing that fight too!!! face it, their levels of competition are nowhere near the same. randy would kick the crap out of carwin.

This fight is going to be over in the first round.
The trash talk is lame as shit too, talk about how you are going to bang his wife and drink his coors light when he’s unconscious on the mat or something, this sounds like two christian school girls trying to one up each other.
by DirtyML on Oct 10, 2009 7:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I hope Carwin continues with his diarrhea of the mouth routine because all he’s gonna do is get Lesnar more pissed. Lesnar in 2nd round by total decapitation!

reading these comments I thought I was in the WWE forum by mistake!
What is going on with MMA fans?? Do people really wanna pay to see Lesnar lie on someone and punch them in the face for a couple of rounds? Is that what this sport’s about now?
I really don’t understand how you guys can eulogize about Anderson Silva and Machida, praise the technique of a guy like Penn and then on the same token, want to see Lesnar hit on someones head like he’s tenderizing a steak.
So now it doesn’t matter that you’ve trained since a kid on honing your skill set cause, people don’t wanna see that, actually what people wanna see now is, a guy the size of a bear, using his wrestling, to hold someone down…and punch them in the face. Yeah, Im uh… I’m really looking forward to that one, I can’t wait.
I read somewhere once that bringing Brock to the UFC would bring a whole new fan base to MMA. Well, I guess that fan base has arrived and they’re looking forward to seeing some good old fashioned wrestling.
I’d rather watch Chong Li fight Frank Dux in Bloodsport than watch Brock grind some meat in the octagon.

geez, you’re letting your dislike for brock blind you from simple common sense. Is ground and pound something new to mma? is brock the first fighter to employ gnp in an mma match? is he the first person to use it to win and successfully defend a title.
by jj on Oct 11, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah your right about that and I’m not Brocks biggest fan.
I just thought that one-dimensional fighters like Matt Hughes belonged to yesterday, now we got guys like GSP who have everything in their arsenal, Brock’s kind of like a HW Matt Hughes is what I mean.
But GnP is part of the sport like it or hate it, and it’s gonna take someone supremely skilled to stop a Lesnar takedown for 5 rounds, so yeah, I can respect what Brock’s achieved. I just don’t like the man’s face I guess.
by 8lackfoot on Oct 13, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I`m so sick of hearing about respect and honor from this guy, about how he`s nothing but a pure fighter and money means nothing, how brocks not a real fighter because he talked shit to mir, dude, you will be lucky if brock dont beat your brains out, mir talked shit and look at the ass whopping he got for his trouble
by steve on Oct 11, 2009 9:09 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Brocks assistant coach marty morgan could outwrestle carwin. There was a top 3 division 2 hwt at scsu and brock tooled him every time.
If you are good at wrestling in high school you can wrestle d3, a state champ d2, but for d1 you need to be elite, nationally ranked, and you will still get red shirted.
Carwin has a kohler’s chance, but 8 times out of 10 this fight will not be pretty, but nor will carwins face when he loses via tko.

I think its going to be a good fight. I haven’t got a pay-per-view since Machida vs. Evans because the cards haven’t seemed that interesting to me. This ppv does have my attention and can’t wait to see who will win against these 2. This is the first person who will size Lesnar up. I say quick fight, 2 rounds.
by E. Fairway on Oct 11, 2009 10:30 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I dont care what any one thinks because Brock Lesnar is going to win this fight.. Carwin is a cry baby thats need to stop talking. Im just tired of hearing him talk. While Carwin is putting out comments for the press to market the fight, Brock is putting out sparring footage and actual training footage.
by zack on Oct 11, 2009 7:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Lesnar will pound Carwin into a broken bloody mess. In the future people will learn to stop running their mouths when it comes to fighting this guy. Brock may be a loose cannon in his interviews but the guy is seriously talented in wrestling and his work ethic is scary. He has learnes so much in each of his showings. I think this is finally a give me fight for Lesnar. Mir is no joke. Randy is always dangerous and I honestly think Heath is still above Carwin. Carwin beat Gabe. I guess that is impressive because Gonzaga beat Crocop…so has about everyone else. I think Cain is going to be more of a test for Brock down the road if he gets by Nog. The Nog that rolled with Randy will be the true test for Brock.
