Report: Alistair Overeem vs Sam Hoger in the works for Oct. 17 Golden Glory event

Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (29-11) will make his previously scheduled appearance for Golden Glory on Oct. 17 against Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1 contestant Sam Hoger (8-4), according to MMAWeekly.

The Hoger camp indicates the deal is "95-percent finalized."

Following a hand injury that booted him from two summer events, Strikeforce officials informed MMAmania.com last month that "Demolition Man" was expected to make separate appearances outside of the San Jose-based promotion prior to defending his belt.

One of those stints involved a trip to the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009, the other was for Golden Glory in his native Amsterdam, which now looks to be scheduled for Oct. 17 against "The Alaskan Assassin."

Hoger emerged from a 16-month self-imposed hibernation to compete against late replacement Jason Doloff at World Championship Fighting (WCF) 4 at Aleppo Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass., in September of 2008.

The heavyweight bout didn’t last long – the former TUF heel scored a 17-second first round technical knockout, which was set up by a kick to the face.

Star-divide

Hoger — who starred on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter — had dropped his previous three fights, including two decision losses to Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans, respectively. Prior to the win, he was choked out by Vernon White in an International Fight League (IFL) show back in April 2007.

He took a break from action to start up his own Miletich Fighting System (MFS) academy in Houston, Texas. Hoger followed up the victory over Doloff by submitting Jonathan Ivey at Urban Rumble Championships (URC) last January.

Following his bout with Hoger, as well as the remaining fights in K-1, Overeem is expected to return to Strikeforce to defend his heavyweight title.

And with Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum and Fedor Emelianenko all gunning for first dibs, don’t expect him to receive a very warm welcome.

I guess Alistair is focusing on the Grand prix in Dec…
Not much danger here via Hoger.

Three letters… W T F ???

by Big Zino on Oct 6, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

This fight is retarded but he did say he was fighting on the Anniversary card of GG so not surprised here.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 6, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally pointless fight.

by DSmith on Oct 6, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

it’s soo funny how “overroids” always finds a way out of american shows, but is always ready to compete over seas..

what a joke!~

by stinky~fingers on Oct 6, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. Alisteroids is a cheater!!!

by LJ on Oct 6, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, pointless indeed. This steroid freak should just join the SuperHulk freakshow tournament in Dream…

by Syd on Oct 6, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Lmfao Stinky Fingers and LJ. Nice names for him. Idk if he roided or not but it’s still funny.

by RyanHobbs on Oct 6, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Lester was the one that came up with Overroids.

by David W-S on Oct 6, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, don’t give me the credit for that one, it was lester the pimp..

he coined the nickname overroids..

by stinky~fingers on Oct 6, 2009 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Isn’t this the same guy who try to steal all the gear from the UFC training center on TUF1?!?!?

Sam Hoger is a bird.

by PhilQNY on Oct 6, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, the prick was caught by Diego with a bunch of UFC stuff in his suitcase, some of which the other guys had lost, then denied stealing anything and lied about the trainers letting him take stuff, then after all that he gave back the stuff but acted as though he was doing it because he had integrity and still refused to admit being a theif. He also took all of the credit when Team Liddell won a challenge after Forrest ran like a madman to win, claiming that it was his strategy that won the challenge when he did nothing. To top it all off he boasted before fighting Forrest that he had made the semis without fighting, claiming that was part of his strategy. The guy is a coward, a liar, a thief and as two faced as any politician, hopefully Overroids destroys him.

by David W-S on Oct 6, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

David W-S tell us how you really feel. Just kidding, I don’t care much for the guy either.

by BeerMan on Oct 6, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Feel free to step in a cage with him. Should be easy for a renaissance man such as yourself.

by Rich B on Oct 6, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude, I got David W-S by KO!! The man is motivated!!! :) Hoger is a tool!

by LJ on Oct 6, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I was backed to beat Ben Saunders in a thread once ;), sure I’ll take on the thief if there is anything left of him after the Overroids fight. Seriously there is nothing likeable about that guy, he is one of the biggest pricks in TUF history, nobody on the show liked him.

by David W-S on Oct 6, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

W T F is right. Alistair fights remind me of Fedor’s. Weak. I do not mean Rodgers, I think he has a chance. But my point is that this fight is weak. There are better fights I want him in.

by iagoof22 on Oct 6, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Zino, EXACTLY what I was thinking…

W…T…F!?

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

One word : Mismatch

by OJR on Oct 6, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

another example why the UFC is the place to be and still means the most in the MMA world. with all the supposed top 10 talents not in the UFC, and all the other organization out there co-promoting, this is what they come up with. go ahead anti-ufc people flame me, but im right.

I live in Alaska and I haven’t met one Sam Hoger fan even though that chode is supposed to be from Eagle River.

by RyanHobbs on Oct 6, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Overeem is juicing. he just doesn’t want to come and pop positive. Who cares. The Strikeforce HW title is meaningless anyway.

by Felix by day, El Mexicutioner by night on Oct 6, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

That belt will remain meaningless until Overoid defends it. My question is WHY THE HELL would a Coker let this guy get away with all of this BS?

by RichT on Oct 6, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Overeem, but whoever is making this guy’s decisions for him needs to be fired.

Twins or Tigers today, boys and girls?

by introvert on Oct 6, 2009 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

Is Verlander going for the Tigers? If so, RIP Twins.

by Diceman on Oct 6, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Twins won! Hell yeah! But were probably going to just get crushed by the Yankees anyway…

by DL92 on Oct 6, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Both suck. Who Cares?

by Felix by day, El Mexicutioner by night on Oct 6, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

My Rangers finished better than both of them, and we’re missing the playoffs. Again.

does anyone else laugh at this matchup

by manalito on Oct 6, 2009 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

Is this a really early Aprils Fools joke? Talk about fighting a CAN. Overeem is such a puuuussssy!

by Brian on Oct 6, 2009 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

i don’t know about that.. he just fought badr hari, peter aerts and remi bonjaski who are 3 of the top kick boxers in the world.

by shamo84 on Oct 6, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

how is Overeem’s a pussy? Overeem is just fighting under contract not booking fights himself. Coker’s the one to blame for making this fight. that’s how mma promotions works.

by Texican on Oct 6, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Scott Coker is the old guy who runs Strikeforce, he didn’t schedule this fight. Overoids is an idiot for juicing and thus making it impossible to fight in the US. What does beating up Sam do for him? My guess is he wants more time to cycle off and this is his way of doing it, by taking fights in countries that don’t mind his taking steroids. I’m sure Holland won’t mind at all if Alistair shows up with his sample already in the bottle for them.

by jay on Oct 6, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Mirko

Mark Hunt
Kharitonov
Shogun
Lil Nog
Arona
Vitor Belfort
Vovs
Buentello
Werdum
Zentsov
Aerts
Bonjasky
Hari

Ubereem has fought all of them. Yeah….what a pussy :(

But this is a total mismatch. Hoger must have stolen Coker’s clothes or something…

by Lappish Shaman on Oct 7, 2009 2:44 AM EDT up reply actions

What does Coker have to do with any of this????

by jay on Oct 7, 2009 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t laugh, cried a little, though.

by Freddy on Oct 6, 2009 12:45 PM EDT reply actions

ha! looks like a picture of the hulk and bruce banner side-by-side.

by Scott on Oct 6, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

I think Hoger is underrated. He gave Rashad all he could handle and everybody looks bad against Lyoto.

by Jon on Oct 6, 2009 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

You got a point. He had a long layoff though Overeem is a pretty daunting opponent. Especially for a light heavyweight at this point.

by RyanHobbs on Oct 6, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

STRIP HIM OF THE BELT!!!

He can fight in every freakin card and promotion except the one where he’s the champion!?!?! He hasn’t defended the biggest belt in Strikeforce since he won it 2 years ago, but he’s had time to fight in 5 or 6 other events. That’s total BS. What kind of organization puts up with a champion like that?
You hear me, Coker? If you want anybody to take your org seriously, ask yourself WWDD (What would Dana Do?) Make Fedor/Rogers a title fight and

STRIP THIS JOKER OF THE BELT!!!

by shonuff on Oct 6, 2009 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

Sam is going to smash overoids… One of the best up and comers out there.

by john G on Oct 6, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

The thief strikes again, first Diego and Forrest’s clothes, then UFC merchandise now john g’s name. What next Hoger, what next?

by David W-S on Oct 6, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL David, would be funny if it really was him!

by BOW on Oct 6, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

BOW, I wouldn’t put it past him after TUF and he hasn’t had much to do for a while so would have the time to post rubbish on a MMA blog.

by David W-S on Oct 6, 2009 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve seen that name in other threads. I have thought it was the real john a couple times, I hadn’t noticed that one was a capital J and the other lower case j.

by jay on Oct 6, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Hoger is a fluke, his stand up is decent and is no match to Overeem’s, if Hoger ground him there will be boring lay n pray.

by Texican on Oct 6, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

Overeem is starting be like Fedor when it comes to dodging big name fights. Booking this fight was a total waste.

by deeche on Oct 6, 2009 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

well he’s still fighting all the top kickboxers, it’s just mma cans he’s fighting.

by Jared on Oct 6, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Overroids wants a tune up fight because he had that badly injured hand. Lets be happy the tune up fight is that thief tool from Tuff 1. None of us know the guy but he was certainly looking like an ass clown on the tuff show. I hope Overroids KO’s this jabroni so he can come back to the states and give the belt to Fedor and avoid the pounding. If Rogers some how shocks the world overroids would come back and try to smash him. He likes to fight other strikers. Fedor really is that good though, his hands are as heavy as Rogers and his ground game is the best in the world.

by Hatteras on Oct 6, 2009 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

Wow this is such an amazing fight! I would rather sit in my own fart stench then watch this. I hope by some twist of fate Hoger KO’s him….That would serve Alistair right for avoiding the the US and real competition…
