He oughta be nervous. He’s WAY out of his league! But this is a no-lose situation for him. If he wins, it’s HUGE and something he can tell his grandkids. If he loses, so what, he lost to one of the all-time greats! No shame in that. Unfortunately, for Randy it’s a no-win situation. Beating unranked Vera means nothing and losing to Vera will make people say he’s washed up and drastically hurt his marketability for future fights and his chances of getting meaningful fights for the rest of his remaining contract.

by shonuff on Oct 6, 2009 10:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Vera isn’t ought of his league against the 16-10 “legend.” I think he’ll be a betting favorite.

Furthermore, I don’t agree with the idea of a no-win situation, which is a byproduct of the stupid match-making system the UFC and other promotions employ. Why would you want to keep a fighter elevated to the “elite” level if he doesn’t actually deserve to be there? You can’t be sheltered and fight only top 5 competition so that you only have “good” losses.

by frosnt on Oct 6, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They’re not just good losses because they’re good fighters, they’re good losses cause he was very competative against good people. Randy is one fight away from being the HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, and that one fight was a war with the #2 HW in the UFC. How does that make Randy undeserving? Do you think any of the contenders ahead of him would’ve done better against Lesnar and Nog???

i agree with everything you said shnuff except for no-win situation for randy.

if he can get by vera he will get yet another title shot probably a record for most title shots ever and I LOVE IT…..GO RANDY and its free sweeeeeet

If Captain Paycheck wins this, he will get his 16th undeserved title shot. The man has never been a contender. GET TO THE BACK OF THE FN LINE GOD DAMMIT!!! Vera has good hands and can KO handy but he chokes during fights. It looks like his randy worship has sank him already.

Well Dia – For years It use to piss me off when people would say he would easily beat up Nog or when they spouted his credentials as if he was such a dominant champ. Or that without a win over him, Big Nog’s resume would have a big gaping hole. Now that he got trashed in that fight- I couldn’t care less about his career except when it gets in the way of other better fighters. I just don’t want to see randy fightfor a title -no one does.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 7, 2009 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i used to be a huge randy couture fan..

i am still a fan of randy the fighter.. just not randy the liar..

randy the person, is a money grubber liar.. he lied to everyone and was busted for it..

he really let me down with all his bullshit..

to be honest, im not ‘pulling’ for either fighter..

this fight is pointless, aside from it being a decent scrap.. definitely not main event worthy..

i do think randy will win though~ and he will probably get a title shot.

i don’t care about that either.. randy won’t beat shogun..

by stinky~fingers on Oct 7, 2009 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

NoName, Get yer frakkin facts straight!!! Randy has had SEVEN title shots, SIX of which HE WON! His other 8 title fights were defenses where HE WAS THE STANDING CHAMPION! The only title shot Randy ever got that he didn’t win the belt was his tiebreaker with Liddell. How the frak do you call a title shot undeserved after the guy beats the sh1t out of the champion!?!?!

Stinky, what the frak are you even talking about? What lie?

Stink, I feel the sameway u do I’m a huge Couture fan, but it’s not beyond him to be self-serving. In his book, he’s a good guy, but it definitely shows his flaws. In addition Couture deserves all the title shots he’s received no question about it.

Why do people think that just because he won he deserved the title shot? Why did he get an immediate shot at Timmy even though he was coming back from losses? Or when he got his @ss kicked at King of Kings but as soon as he came back it was for a shot?

The moniker captain paycheck was coined soon after it was discovered that his dispute with the UFC over respect turned out to be a strategy to strong arm them. He started floundering back and forth about the reason claiming respect vs money or respect = $$$ blah blah blah. Anyways This isn’t the first time couture has been caught with his pants down when it comes to big money- i believe he split with RAW/team Quest after he ripped hendo off of $$$. No so Captain America if you ask i guess anyone.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 7, 2009 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I for one am glad he got a shot at Timmy because he was the most boring fn fighter in the ufc! I hated when he would have a title fight because that was 25 min of waisted time, which in turn had us never seeing any undercard fights. I also would like to see him against Machida (if he beats Shogun) because of his excelent game planning. I really think that Randy (Whether he deserves it or not) would give Machida his best fight!

by BOW on Oct 7, 2009 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy has to be the favourite for this fight, the man is a legend and was the first guy to win titles in two weight classes. No shame in losing to Brock and Big Nog, Lesnar is a monster and Nog is one of the greatest HWs of all time. I’ve always respected Randy as a competitor and a person, although I wasn’t too happy with him walking out on the UFC for more money I’m glad that he’s back. He is a warrior who gives it his all and is a master strategist, with great all-round skills.

Vera is talented but hasn’t been the same since the Mir fight, he can beat lesser fighters but against better opponents he folds. Randy will get the better of him in the clinch, wearing him down before taking Brandon down and controlling the fight, possibly getting a stoppage in the third after ground and pound. I don’t see Brandon coping in front of a hostile, pro-Randy crowd in the main event in a foreign country against one of his idols. He’s going to struggle with the pressure once again.

Couture should be able to win this and if he does so in dominant fashion, he will probabaly get fastracked for a title shot, as he is a big draw and a fight with Machida or Shogun would sell. The Rashad-Thiago winner would be next in line, unless Andy faces Shogun if he wins or Rampage comes back.

by David W-S on Oct 7, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His gameplanning is a myth. He just seemed so brilliant because he kept fighting people with the same defensive liabilities aka strikers with weak either weak defensive wrestling or weak clinch games. Also because he pretty much fought the same type of fighters for the past 5 yrs he never fixed his own technical issues. It’s always the same type of fighter who smash on him – guys with good sub grappling games and standup to match. Machida is one of those guys and one of the few in MMA who counters in the proper sense of the word instead of weak-@ss MMA counterstriking. Couture would get raped worse than forrest.

I will be be number 4 going for Vera….But am pulling for Machida big time…NR and Stinky I agree withyou both. It is easy to see if you look at his record why people feel the way they do about Randy and his title shots. How many other fighters get title shots after coming off of losses or after 1 win like Randy has?

Entering the UFC he beat Graham, Belfort, and Smith to get the UFC title. He then tried his luck ot of the UFC goes 2-2 and gets the title shot and beats Randleman. He defends 2 times against Rizzo gets the wins, loses to Barnett, then loss is changed because of steroids. He losses to Ricco for the vacant hw belt. He has 2 fights at LHW beats Liddell then Tito gets LHW belt. Losses right away to Belfort. Gets an immediate rematch beats Belfort then losses to Chuck. Fights Chuck again after a one other fight and losses again. So now as a 10-8 fighter coming off of 2 losses he gets an immediate title Shot against Timmy, whether you like Timmy or not, coming off a 2 losses, who gets a title shot? You think Forrest is going to get a title shot now that he lost 2 times, even though he is a top 10 fighter? After beating Timmy beats Gonzaga, Losses to Brock, Losses to Nog, and if he beats Vera is going to get a title shot against a possibly 16-0 Machida or a Rua who could possibly be 3-1. I would say that is why people bitch. If you give any competitive fighter in the UFC those opportunities they could be considere Captain “Insert Country of Origin Here”. You think if Hendo got a title shot every 2 fights he would have held the belts as much as Randy? There are several fighters in the UFC if given the opps. that Randy got who have the same type of history, only it doesn’t happent that way.

“he pretty much fought the same type of fighters for the past 5 years”

Right, Bro! I’ve never understood how people even tell Liddell and Gonzaga apart, much less Vitor and Brock, or Tim Sylvia and Van Arsdale. Those guys all have nearly identical fighting styles…they’re practically sextuplets!

Dude, you say some dumb@$$ sh1t!!!

by Titor Belfortiz on Oct 7, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They all have the same weaknesses that he keeps exploiting. Who the f was talking about fighting style. Stop forcing people into either your striker, wrestler or submission artist categories – it’s not 1996 anymore. Differences happen in the details and all these guys had the same flaws when he exploited them – Weak clinch games, weak cardio and for the most part weak defensive wrestling except for Van Arsdale. He got anaconda choked by fn couture that’s all that needs to be said about his skills. Really dumb sh!t right?!! Now unless you can offer some deeper legit technical insight to disprove what i am sayin please kindly shut the f@ck up!!!

Completely disrespected Nog, buy saying the ONLLY FIGHT WORTH IT FOR RANDY WAS FEDOR!!!…as if Nog wasnt ALWAYS RANKED HIGHER THEN COUTURE, and about a legit 5 times better of a fighter!

I dont like Fighters that dont earn title shots! So FOCK Couture! Hope he brings out the best in Vera and gets lit up like a christmas tree!

by john G on Oct 7, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

NNR, saying that all Randy’s opponents were the same because they all had weak clinch, weak defensive, wrestling, or weak cardio is absurd. Since Randy has always been known to have the best clinch and wrestling in the UFC and off-the-charts cardio. Compared to him almost EVERYONE is weak in those areas. That’s like saying that all Machida’s opponents were the same type of figher because they all had weak karate defense or all GSP’s opponents were the same type of fighter because they had weak takedown defense. Rediculously lame logic!

For Randy, we’ll he’s Randy…the Legend. He loses, well that’s cause he is in his later 40’s, if he wins, well, it’s the continuation of the Legend.

I don’t like him either and have been a critic of his for a long time, but at least Vera stepped up to take this fight. Because Bisping lost we missed out on seeing Andy, then Wandi took time off to get facial surgery, then BJ and Diego were put on the 107 card as Rampage bailed and they don’t like fighting in the UK and Rashad refused the Randy fight as he still wanted to fight Rampage. If it wasn’t for Vera, we wouldn’t be seeing Randy fight in the UK and this is the one and only chance we’ll get to see a pioneer of the sport and a true legend and all time great step into the octagon live, without having to spend thousands to see a show in the States.

In this fight either Vera will shock the world and finally fulfil his potential by KO’g Randy or he will get outwrestled and dominated throughout, either way it should be a fun fight. It’s the first time in a while I’ve been looking forward to a Vera fight and I have a lot more respect for him just for taking it, especially on short notice.

Vera really sucks really bad and is very boring to watch. The only reason he’s still in UFC is because he is promoting UFC in Phillipines where UFC WANTED to go in the future.

Now that they are no longer interested in going there. This will be Vera’s last or second last fight in the UFC. Randy wins this one tko ref stoppage 1st or 2nd round. After another fight for Randy if he wins then another title shot.

Vera has shown a horrible attitude and has flattered to deceive. He has lost to all of the top opponents he has faced and only had one TKO win since the Mir KO, which was against a complete can. He also made shocking excuses after losing, which is why he is criticised.

However by taking a tough fight on short notice and putting on a good performance he will win back the fans. He seems a lot more humble in this interview, even if he says dumb things, and a win over Randy would be the biggest of his career by far.

by David W-S on Oct 7, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The same certainly cant be said of Randy! At the fan expo at 100 once his two hour signing slot was over he was away on his toes despite there still being a queue left with many people waiting in line three hours or more.

Compare that with Shogun and Renzo who stayed at least half an hour past their two hour slot to make sure everyone got an autograph.

by attakdog on Oct 7, 2009 4:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s cause Shogun and Renzo mostly fought in Japan where fans are respectful, win or lose. Randy has had the misfortune of always fighting in America where fans boo and send hate mail and throw beer cans and talk sh1t about you after you lose an edge-of-your-seat-war with one of the greatest fighters alive, and just want your autograph so they can sell it on EBAY.

Have you ever heard of having other commitments and/or a schedule? Some of you guys really expect the absolute world from fighters and it’s completely unrealistic.

by GG on Oct 7, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Randy’s gameplanning is a bit overrated and I think that’s what cost him the fight against Nog and maybe even Lesnar. He basically has 2 weaknesses: 1) his overconfidence in his striking 2) his chin is ok, but not impenetrable. Unfortunately against both Nog and Brock, Randy decided to play to their “weaknesses” instead of his own strengths and tried to stay on the feet. He was actually matching wrestling with Lesnar, they were dead even in Takedowns, TDDs, and reversals, and Randy was controlling Lesnar in the clinch, but then he tried to swat with Lesnar and underestimated his reach. He also underestimaed Nog’s boxing and his own ability to grapple with Nog. If he’d stuck to wrestling, clinch & GnP, he’d have had a shot at a decision. Regardless, none of the LHW contenders could’ve beaten Lesnar or Nog, so those losses are irrellevant to Randy’s LHW ranking. What is relevant is that he’s won six titles, 3 of them at LHW, and Chuck Liddell is the only LHW ever to beat him. Also the fact that he’s won 6 out of 7 times that he challenged for the belt and poses more stylistic problems for the current champion than any other contender.

by shonuff on Oct 7, 2009 12:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe, but he’s hands down the strongest SOB in Lightheavy and the best grappler too! And IMO that makes him the biggest threat to Machida. If he can get “the Dragooo” against the fence, it’s his game from then on!

by Titor Belfortiz on Oct 7, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy is an egomaniac- Period. He thought he was bigger than the sport. That’s why he walked away a couple years ago. He was demanding ridicululous money. He thought the ufc would come crawling begging him back; they didn’t need to. I used to like the guy but his head is getting a little too big. I was glad to see Nog handle him the way he did. Stylistically, I think Vera has an excellent chance; younger, quicker and his strengths match up to Randy’s quite well. It will be a close fight either way.

Why do you nuthuggers always accept Dana White’s version of every story? Dana has the biggest ego and the biggest mouth in sports and you all say you hate him, but when any fighter does anything that’s not in Zuffa’s best interest, Dana say’s they’re delusional, greedy, egotistical, etc. and you guys buy it lock-stock-and-barrell! Stop drinking the kool-aid, morons!

by Titor Belfortiz on Oct 7, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not “buying” Dana’s story. I actually saw a lengthy interview of Couture talking about some of the things he wanted before he would come back a couple years ago. It really was ridiculous. He isn’t bigger than the sport but for a while I think he really believed he was. He has definitely been humbled though. Humility is a good thing. Just look at GSP; like his style or not, he is a humble likable human being whom I could never see allowing his head to become so big he wouuld go on a 2 year hiatus because he thought mma or the ufc couldn’t get along without him.

by Wes on Oct 7, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy never thought HE was bigger than the sport. He just thought the SPORT was bigger than the UFC. Between their lawyers and their PR koolaid vendors, I guess they proved him wrong.

by shonuff on Oct 8, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who’s been drinking the kool-aid? You been drinking the Couture-aid I think! Cause he ain’t all that! I saw an interview with Randy where he thought the UFC should provide fighters with health insurance. HEALTH INSURANCE? Really Randy? What stupid company would give health insurance to ultimate fighters? Oh, by the way, I hear their now giving health insurance to professional shark wrestlers, it’s a really inexpensive plan too!

by Rich on Oct 7, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually did see that. You’re right, what a moron.

by Wes on Oct 7, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing unrealistic or unreasonable about wanting health insurance for fighters. The NFL covers player’s medical expenses and football is WAY WAY WAY more dangerous and has MANY MANY MANY more injuries than MMA! And for these undercard fighters who get paid 5 to 10 thousand per fight, one injury could wipe them out financially. I was uninsured for a while and got sick. I had to spend 1 night in a discount hospital and it cost me $8,000 just for a stomach pump and some IVs…no surgery. When I had a neck injury a few years later, the surgery cost over $100,000. How’s a fighter supposed to cover that on 5-10 grand 3 times/year. Health insurance is a completely reasonable expectation for any professinal athlete under contract with a major-league organization. A lot of what Randy was fighting for was respect for fighters and better treatment. It wasn’t so much about his own money as setting precedents for fighter’s rights. It’s one of the reasons the other fighters love and respect him so much. He tried to stand up to the Monarchy on their behalf cause none of them can afford to.

by shonuff on Oct 8, 2009 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

According to all the insiders, Randy is one of the nicest, most humble guys in the sport. All the other fighters look up to him and talk about how humble and helpful he is. He left the UFC because he wanted to fight Fedor. The UFC had a rediculously weak HW division at the time and Affliction was holding 6 or 7 of the top HW. UFC brought in CroCop, but he washed out in his first fight and there was nobody left to challenge Randy. If Dana could’ve gotten Fedor, Randy would’ve stayed. He really wanted that fight bad. Affliction or whoever wouldn’t have paid as much as the UFC, but Randy wanted a challenge and Fedor was #1. Brock was not a factor yet and the fight all the hardcore fans were screaming for was Randy/Fedor (even though we all knew Fedor would crush him). Its true he was not happy with his pay once he found out that Liddell and others were making more. But the real reason he left was his quest to fight the best in the world. When Zuffa’s legal team made it impossible for him to fight Fedor, he came back to the UFC.

How come when Anderson Silva hand-picks guys he knows he can beat or calls out irrellevant guys like Mir, he’s a god. But when Randy goes after the most dangerous fighter in the world, he’s a money-grubbing egomaniac??? Freakin’ hypocrits!

Actually Anderson is great, but he’s not a god. I actually think GSP would beat him at 185.

I doubt it. But with a time machine, he could beat the sh1t out of Bruce Lee at 170.
