UFC Quick Quote: Angry Pirate to blame for Forrest Griffin's early cage exit at UFC 101

"That's dumb. [People who criticized me leaving the cage] are idiots. Why? Nobody cares. I mean, I don't think the losers were going to speak that night anyway, you know. Just get on with the next fight already. This guy actually asked me a good question the other day, and this is a real story and I really like it: first off, he was very confrontational; I didn't like him much to begin with, and he goes, 'Hey, man, I have to know,' because it's his business to know, 'why did you run out of the cage that night after the Silva fight?' And I said, 'Look, man, I haven't told anybody, let's keep this on the down low, but the truth is your mom was waiting for me in the back to suck my d***, and you know how good of a b*** j** your mom gives, so I didn't want to be late for that sh**.' And that's pretty much the answer I give. I like that answer, so I'll give that answer to everyone."
-- Forrest Griffin gives MMA Fanhouse his usual shtick in regards to answering for his mad dash to the locker room following his knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 101. The former light heavyweight champ -- who also bolted from the cage after getting clowned by Keith Jardine at UFC 66 -- doesn't feel obligated to stay for the official announcement when he gets creamed. But does skipping town early disrespect his opponent -- and the fans? Opinions please.

I don’t blame him, he’s showed tonnes of respect before and after fights for his opponents.
He suffers an humiliating defeat let the guy go lick his woulds, don’t make him stand there and smile while they are still fresh.
It’s a shame people don’t show him the respect he showed following both his win over Rampage and his losses to Rashad. Let’s not mention the tremendous respect he showed to the Spider the months leading into that fight.

you dont get it tz. when makin mom jokes your not really insulting the guys mom. its more general then that. the guy got set up to take a really big fall and probably realized that when he was on his back a minute into the fight. he was embarassed and now everyone is making fun of the guy. wouldnt you be defensive too?
by Egads on Oct 3, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions
No it;s just all unraveling for him. He thought he was gonna pull off another Shogun victory. He’s still so bitter about it. Maybe he actually bought into the hype himself and the fall is too high.

I agree with Name 100%…..
but also in my mind you should be able to handle defeat in the same manner as winning. All the top guys after losing stick around. Just imagine after the superbowl the losing team running off the field crying and not shaking hands with the winner…..
looks like a really bad loser and a bit of a spoild athlete to me.

I personally have no problem with Forrest bolting from the Octagon like that. I thought it was hilarious. It was also a complement to Silva’s dominant performance in that he was too embarrassed to stick around.

Mum jokes are only used by people who don’t have anything clever or witty to say, I can’t believe that some people take them seriously.
As for Forrest he is really starting to piss me off, none of his opponents ran off before the official announcement after losing to him, they had more respect for him and the fans to do that so it’s pretty classless for him to behave like that. Forrest has been acting real childish lately and when his drawing ability is based on him being a likeable hardworking guy, the now bitter Forrest who runs away after losing and bashes the fans for idolising him whilst admitting that he’s not training is not going to lose his star power and without that he is nothing as he is far from the best LHW in the UFC.
by David W-S on Oct 3, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
An f’in Star Wars comparison? Yeesh.. Anyway, to way above posts, it isn’t an actual insult to someone’s family if you don’t know the person. It’s just a joke. The kind we can all predict, but still laugh at. But he’s right though, that reporter’s mom has some serious talent.

yea..that was a bit ridiculous…the inner geek in me always surfaces…anyway..the one thing I wanna know, and something nobody else has commented on..is who he should fight next..toss him a can..or put him up against a legit LHW and risk 3 losses in a row?

Guys, give Forrest a break…that had to have been one of the most humiliating losses we’ve ever seen. I mean, Silva like b*tch smacked him for crying out loud. He literally opened up his hand and slapped Griffin’s face then proceeded to help him up, dodge his punches like something out of the Matrix, then knock his *ss out with a jab while moving backwards. Whereupon Forrest proceeded to flop to the mat like fish. That was some funny stuff.

The Angry Pirate
1- When a chick is giving you head and you pull out and blow it in her face, then you hit her in the knee and she is jumping around covering one eye.
Version 2:
when a male is giving it to a girl doggy style and spits on her lower back. The girl flips over thinking he’s finished, as soon as she does so the guy cums in the girls eye and kicks her in the shin.
Do you think it was this that made Forrest run out of the ring? Did some guy give him the angry pirate?
by Da Monkey on Oct 4, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions
What’s he going to say after the fight? “Man, I just really got my ass kicked, sorry everyone.” Give me a break. Who cares whether he walks back to the lockerroom or runs. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to address the crowd after getting my butt kicked.
by LogJammin' on Oct 3, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions
its not just the interview, screw the interview…its the fact that he didn’t stay for a decision. he showed bad sportsmanship by not staying or congratulating his opponent. There is no way you don’t honestly NOT see whats wrong with it. If a football team ran off he field after a loss shake hands with the other team we would be hearing all about it on espn. And if someone like Tito ran out of the octagon everyone would have something negative to say about tito…same should go for forrest. And the mom joke thing just shows how immature he is. He can’t handle a loss and if someone wants to talk to him about it he cowards like a child and builds a wall between him and the interviewer with “momma jokes” For all the praise he gets for being tough and showing heart, I think we learned that he is really a mental midget…I’ll bet good money he never becomes champ again.

He just kinda laughed it off when Dave Farra made a joke to him about his quick exit. I like Forrest, but it is kinda lame to just run away like that. I understand not wanting to stay and talk, but everyone else has to do it to.
by naturalshadow on Oct 3, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he’s trying to offend and push away fans and the likes in hopes that people won’t put so much pressure on him anymore. He’s gonna keep doing this acting out thing- you’ll see no more of the self depricating act anymore. He’ll still try to be funny but it’s gonna be different. I’ve always held the opinion that his career was made by excellent timing in taking fights and that he never had any special abilities whether technical or physical besides cardio. Maybe he’s realizing that too?
by NameNotRequired on Oct 3, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Although I’m a Forrest fan, I thought his quick exit was wrong. Regarding his future, I am also questioning if he can hang with the elite in the division. Whomever he fights next, it will be a must win for him or he could be relegated to undercards. And yes, I think he is feeling pressure and self-doubt.

Just shows his character as a person. He has no class. Do u think Machida, GSP, A. Silva would do that? I doubt it. In his last few interviews he’s doing a good job of alienating his fans. When you stop caring about yr fans, your fans stop caring about you. Then no one wants to see yr fights. Or they’ll cheer on the other guy.
One of the great things about MMA is the sportsmanship of the fighters. This arose from the honor and respect that is a major part of martial arts.
Forrest is on his way down: I don’t think he has what it takes to compete with the new breed of fighters and his attitude sucks. You lost one of yr biggest fans dude.

lmao awesome answer, and i don’t know if you people have ever competed in combat sports. its one thing to lose and put up a good fight. but getting your ass handed to you after killing yourself in training is very disheartening and can make a competitor emotionally vulnerable. i can fully understand why forrest bolted, your emotions take over and you can’t control yourself. i’ve been there…he just has to put it behind him and come back to fight another day. easier said then done though, two back to back ko losses are going to be hard to bounce back from. he’s has to find the confidence he had when he fought shogun.
by matt on Oct 3, 2009 12:10 PM EDT reply actions
Nobody else behaves like that in the UFC, so Forrest should not be allowed to get away with it after doing this two times. If Lesnar ran off after losing you’d never hear the end of it, but because Forrest is “funny” (mum jokes are one of the cheapest forms of comed) apologists continue to defend him. Not staying for the official decision is inexcusable, it is one of the most disrespectful things you can do in MMA.

Introvert is a tool. Forest is an “everyman” and that’s why we like him. He’s not the most gifted fighter in the sport and everything he’s achieved he’s earned with hard work alone. If you don’t like Forest you need to look at yourself – “why don’t I like guy with a great sense of humor, great work ethic, and humility to boot”. You probably have very little friends, if any, yourself. His fans love his antics because thats just what they are…antics. He feels the need to deflect from a subject that he’s probably not too proud of. Give the man a break. Silva is in another class, but Forest definatly has a place in MMA history.

Sticking around after the fight to offer your thoughts on the fight is just part of the business. It comes with the territory. He never has a problem with it when he wins, but when it comes to a loss, there’s no promises. He’s trying to camouflage the real story here, and thats that he got worked over in the cage and he felt too humiliated to respond to it. If what he was after was getting himself alienated from the UFC fanbase, then mission accomplished. Forrest, or Opie Taylor as I like to call him, is quickly becoming ‘shoulda woulda coulda’. His days in the UFC are numbered.

Everybody that is bashing Forrest for running out of the cage is completely ridiculous.
He trained for 6 weeks, and walked into the octagon with millions of people watching, and he gets knocked out.
I mean what the hell is expected. He was upset. It’s not like he’s making excuses or saying anything disrespectful to Anderson. He’s accepted the loss and he’s just tired of everyone asking him about it. He wants to move on.
And for everyone saying he’s talentless, especially you Kevin, is unbelievable. He got knocked out by THE BEST FIGHTER IN THE WORLD. Look at the wars Forrest has been in. Does he not come into a fight ready to put on a show for us, the fans?
Come on, have some respect guys. This site has changed alot in the past few years..
by Madnuts on Oct 3, 2009 1:13 PM EDT reply actions
Dude why are you suprised by this, people on here will completely change there views on a fighter after one loss or one win no matter who it is they are fighting. Kinda like how people thought thiago silva is a future champ but then gets beat by one of the best in the world and now claim he is overrated. Same with forrest, a guy who has wins over rampage jackson and shogun rua, he loses to anderson and he sucks never had any skill and is a pussy with no class.
by mma guru on Oct 3, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Running away after losing before the official decision is as classless as it gets, you never saw Shogun do that after his defeat to Forrest and you never see any other fighters, even Lesnar, behave like that. This guy loves the spotlight when he wins but when he loses he acts like a baby and disrespects the fans and his opponents. Forrest looked good against Rampage and Shogun, though I had the Rampage fight as a draw or a close win to Quinton as a couple of rounds could have gone either way, but he was never that great and was always going to get clowned by Andy, it’s his post-fight behaviour after losing to Andy and Jardine that annoyed me, I could let him off the first time but the last fight showed that he hasn’t matured at all and this quote shows that he isn’t the nice humble guy he portrays on TV.
As for Thiago, I thought that he was overrated before the Machida fight as he hadn’t really done anything and after he got hammered in that fight I kept my opinion on him. He looked great against Jardine but has a lot to prove against Rashad who’ll be a much more difficult opponent to finish and a much more dangerous opponent on the feet.
by David W-S on Oct 3, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions
So what if he runs out? Did he not step in the octagon to fight?
Omg, you guys are calling him a cry baby? Come on! I’ve never heard so much complaining. I’d rather every UFC fighter run outta the cage after a win or lose, than act like Lesnar and make a joke out of the sport. Forrest has shown no disrespect to Silva at all. He came to fight, fought, lost, and accepted it. “Oh noooo, he ran outta the octagon!!! This makes my vagina hurttt!” The guys was upset, and embarrassed. What could he have said after the fight? There was nothing to say. And I’m sure Silva didn’t feel disrespected by this at all.

Same reasons any of us would have ran out, he probably regretted it 5 minutes later, but in the heat of the moment…

i think u guys and the other dumb fans r just mad because he does’nt hate himself like u guys do, fact of the matter is just that ur all critices and nuthing more, no one on here will ever be a MMA fighter, and if any of us tired we wud most likly go no where, he shud’nt care what we think because at the end of the day we do nuthing..
by guyverbob on Oct 3, 2009 2:54 PM EDT reply actions
I understand what you are saying but you are wrong. He does need to care what we think and there is something we do, we pay his freaking bills.
I love Forrest but I think that what he is doing here is being a douche. I agree him him that it takes a total asshole to ask something like that but being that UFC is getting millions of fans he has to know he is going to run into morons like that and he could just as easily give a witty but decent remark rather than sinking to their level.
by JasonFahQ on Oct 3, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I used to not care that much about the exit, but now that every time he opens his mouth, he acts like a douchebag, he’s lost a fan. He’s a professional fighter. The fans PAY to watch him fight. If he RUNS out of the cage after losing to a knockout like that, is he honestly surprised that he’s being asked what happened, and why?
It’s obvious that it has messed him up emotionally, and he can’t handle it. He needs to say that when he answers, and come to terms with it, instead of getting angry when he’s asked the questions.
If you only like being interviewed when you win, you shouldn’t be in the UFC man.

all of you ridiculous hypocrites are killing me. people here getting all over forrest for not staying and calling it bad sportsmanship, but when brock started cussing in mir’s face and flipping off the crowd, there was an ENTIRE article defending him and how he was just having a “real emotional response.” yet forrest not staying in the ring is bad sportsmanship are you fucking kidding me? are people really that blind to their own bias? give the guy a fucking break, if you don’t understand him leaving, then nothing in your life has ever been significant.
by storhaug on Oct 3, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions
Right on, Storhaug, Forrest is generally a gud guy and handles most things in his professional life well. A couple of times he runs out the cage.. yeah he shouldn’t do it, it’s not showing good judgement. Also, I think he should just give the answer we all know to the question ‘why’… he should just give a simple answer, “I was emabarressed and upset” ‘sorry’. It’s really not that big a deal if he would just respond with a decent answer ‘the truth’… he’s had plenty of time to think about it.. this ‘mom’ comment is pretty lame.
by DAVE A on Oct 3, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions
No he’s the hypocrite dude. He writes this book; “Got Fight” Goes on a book tour being Mr. Professional then loses a fight and acts totally unprofessional, and continues too. He wants to talk to people and come off like this personable guy when he’s trying to sell a book and now acts like an ass because he lost. Sore loser! Sour grapes! Get over it Forrest be a man. Take the loss! And act like a professional, not a freakin cry baby. I always hated to lose too but you have to learn to be humble in a loss or a win not a jackass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whatever happened to that guy who won TUF1? What’s his name again?
by Bosco on Oct 3, 2009 4:30 PM EDT reply actions
who cares that he ran off yea it was disrespectful and to bad he got his ass kicked and yes it was extremely humilating anyone on this site that axctually trains. after you get crushed like he did would u want to stand there. me, if that ever happen to me im doing the same thing. get the fuck over it.

Forrest keeps falling farther and farther down into the cesspool of bad taste and idiocy. Sure doesn’t make him attractive in any way, shape or form, especially where the ladies are concerned. I can’t wait to see a picture of the woman who managed to pick him out of the available men; I pity the resulting gene pool if he his capable of reproducing.
by Dorothy Willis on Oct 3, 2009 5:34 PM EDT reply actions
why are some people defending him? he ran because he is a bitch, period! every fighter feels like shit after a loss, but they are man enough to stick around. bashing forest has nothing to do with bashing a fighter or posters never being fighters or anything like that. forest is a lousy excuse as a man. he is a little bitch, regardless of his profession. if he ran a muffler shop he would probably run out of it flailing his arms in a fit everytime a customer called him on some shoddy work. he is a bitch loser.
by Conan the Barbarian on Oct 3, 2009 5:59 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, he’s obviously a bitch, because he didn’t step in the octagon with the best fighter in the world to fight him. You my friend,Plain and simple. are an idiot.
by Madnuts on Oct 4, 2009 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions
look how he conducted himself afterwards. you guys are under the impression that a fighter can’t be a bitch too. sorry, think a little deeper. forest condects himself like a pathetic loser when he loses. his bitch act isn’t fooling any real fight fans.
by Conan the Barbarian on Oct 4, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions
If you step into a cage, to fight a guy that is known to be the best fighter in the world, and try to trade punches with him, you are not a bitch. Maybe if he would have made excuses or something like that, i could see. But he didn’t, he accepted the loss, and he’s preparing for the future. I think you’re a bitch for calling a former champion a bitch over the computer.
Let’s all give a round of applause, he’s just won douche-bag of the year award.
by Madnuts on Oct 4, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I do like Forrest, but I must admit that he should be more embarrassed for running out the cage rather than getting beat by one of the greatest fighters of all time. I find his last couple interviews annoying, and uncomfortable at the best. He reminds me of some clown who’s girlfriend left him, and he tries to act like he doesn’t care, but it’s so pathetically obvious that he’s still whipped. Bottom line is I do care that he just ran out the cage, and everyone else should too. Would everyone be happy if every fighter that loses a fight just runs out like that? That’s a VERY ‘sore loser’ thing to do. you go and shake the other guys hand congratulate him, go back to your corner than NOT have your hand raised and at WORST answer a few questions after.
Dude you lost a fight that you should have never taken. Get over it, and start addressing it like a man. If you never ran out the cage nobody would be asking you anything. It’s not like you had to talk anyway, in fact most fights only interview the winner.
by Benz on Oct 3, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions
That’s a pretty crazy coincidence that turned out to be that guy’s mom who sucked Forrest off.
by h'angus on Oct 3, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions
Dont’ forget Forrest got knocked fuckin stupid in the cage. He was probably using his last operating brain cell to run out and find an E.R. Now he’s makin Mama jokes…..better get an M.R.I. Forest and cut down 170. Good luck smart ass.
by Vincentvega on Oct 3, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions
First off I like Forrest. However what he did was out of total disrespect. If you lose you stay in the cage and wait for the announcement, shake his hand then get ready for the next. To me this makes this fight seem like it was fixed. AS far as the mom jokes get real what are we like 12 again. Forrest is not that good to be saying stuff like that. He has a very very questsionable chin and has showed it the fights he lost. He lost to the best fighter in the business so GSP fans. I dont think Forrest will get a chance to hold the title again cause I dont think he will beat a top contender in the division again.
by matt on Oct 3, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions
Most of you guys were probably made fun of in High school or something. If the reporter was being an asshole, then Forest reserves the right to make an asshole remark.
by Man Child on Oct 3, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions
Forrest has proven to be totally classless. I have zero respect left for this guy. I wouldn’t pay a nickel to watch him “fight”. He keeps sinking to lower lows. Just go away Forrest. And seriously; don’t come back! Ever…

Once any of you go through training, fight Anderson Silva, Get you ass kicked, and then stick around after the fight….. THEN, You can give Forrest shit. But until then SHUT UP!
