- AMERICAN TOP TEAM SENDS KIMBO BACK TO SCHOOL

- AMERICAN TOP TEAM SENDS KIMBO BACK TO SCHOOL

A pack of wolves waited for Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson when he entered the flagship gym of American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla., on Thursday.

Position to position, hour to hour, Thiago Alves, Luis Cane, Mike Brown, Yves Edwards, Jorge Santiago, and Dan Cramer drilled Kimbo in jiu-jitsu. The hardened veterans didn’t hold back. Boxing coach Howard Davis got a little time, but striking took a back seat to the mat.

Kimbo, a longtime resident of Miami, came to the gym two years ago and left in a rage after a fighter caught him in a painful armbar. This was his first time back since then.

Ricardo Liborio, founder of American Top Team, has sent Kimbo back to school to learn the basics.

"Right now, what we can see is a big, hardened guy with a fight mentality and a lot of heart," Liborio told MMAWeekly.com. "It’s just a guy who knows how to punch and is very heavy handed, but has a long way to go with the grappling and the wrestling stuff."

After cutting his teeth with Bas Rutten and Randy Khatami in a rush from YouTube brawler to mixed martial artist, Kimbo this week signed a training contract with American Top Team and plans to stay there for the foreseeable future.

Liborio’s goal for Kimbo is to stay upright long enough to use his heavy hands.

"Don’t engage in an exchange of wrestling that you’re not prepared for," says Liborio.

What Kimbo lacks, by his accord, is the muscle memory that comes with years of dedicated practice. Jiu-jitsu black belt Liborio and American Top Team are there to fill the gap.

"I think I’m still there… working on my ground game," said Kimbo. "You’re gonna learn a lot, but you’re not going to master anything in two years. The more you roll, the more you learn, just like as long as you live, you gonna learn as you live. It’s not something that you say okay, you’ve learned it, you’ve got it, you’re good, you can go kick someone’s ass now. No, no, no. That’s something that you have to continue to do."

Nowhere was Kimbo’s lack of seasoning more evident than in his most recent televised fight against Roy Nelson on the tenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter." As soon as the former streetfighter let his hands go, Nelson swarmed and took him down. Kimbo floundered as Nelson passed his guard and twice pinned his body and arms in a crucifix, the second of which brought the fight to an end.

Many of Kimbo’s castmates were surprised by his humility in asking for help on the ground, particularly Nelson, who was his roommate in the fighter house and broke down his victory step by step afterwards.

And well-rounded fighter or not, Kimbo is still ratings gold. Fueled by legions of YouTube fans, the Wednesday broadcast broke records in viewership for Spike TV. He has now participated in three of the four most watched fights in U.S. MMA history.

After three days of twice-a-day sessions with his bearded pupil, Kimbo has lived up to some of Liborio’s expectations and confounded others.

"Let’s put it this way: he’s exactly where I thought he would be in skill level, but he’s way more acceptable in terms of learning and mentality," he said.

The idea is not to let Kimbo get ahead of himself.

"Number one: ABC’s, you know what I’m saying?" said Liborio. "You’ve got to go back to basics. There’s no way to get a solid foundation, sort of jumping over positions and try to do something that’s acrobatic and crazy. He’s not at that level of skills right now. He‘s gotta go through the fundamentals of grappling and ground and takedowns. Very basic stuff; foot positions, and hand position."

The good news, says Liborio, is that Slice is a sponge for learning, an observation backed by his camera time on TUF.

"Maybe two days is too early to say something, but it’s been easy to work with him," he said. "He’s very coachable. If he keeps the way he’s doing right now, it’s going to pick up fast."

Kimbo all but confirmed he is set to fight on the show’s season finale Dec. 5 in Las Vegas, and says he is currently "in camp." UFC president Dana White has declined to confirm his participation in the finals or elsewhere, but it’s clear that the company has big plans for Kimbo down the line.

Liborio, meanwhile, hopes this week is the beginning of a constructive partnership.

"The plan is, win or lose, to keep the guy in the family," he said

LOL at the muscle memory thing. Fighting I believe is like music. It’s 5/6 muscle memory, and 1/6 instinct. But what do i know, I’m just a former street brawler, hehehe! NIce update on ATT johnny boy!

Hmm that’s interesting. At least Kimbo is learning and trying to get better. Glad the camp is feeding him to the wolves and helping him out win or lose.

I am by no means a Rashad fan…but the more I see of him the more respect I have for him…minus the crotch grab and crap talking in the octagon…and him declining to fight captain paycheck is a smart decision…theyre both great fighters but rashad vs thiago seems like a better decision..Id prefer rashad vs luiz cain but I think he is booked to fight lil nog..

why? he’s different in different situations like all human beings, ofc i respect him but I feel like he’s a d’ck trying to act something he’s not, and that he even tried to compare himself to Rampage on the show was unreal.

RASHAD IS A CHUMP. I can’t believe he said that Couture has to prove himself in light heavyweight before Rashad would fight him! What a joke. Who does Rashad think he is? He is so cocky that he thinks Randy Couture is beneath him? What a joke. I am very surprised that all you other fans agree with him. He beat a washed up Liddell, split decision over the British loser Bisping, and TKO’ed Forest ‘fast exit’ Griffin (not to mention never landing a punch during his beating by Lyoto). That’s his resume’ that puts him so far out of Randy Couture’s class? C’mon people, please somebody explain why they have any respect for him.

by capt doug on Oct 3, 2009 2:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rashad was previously undefeated and a champion. Couture has lost his last 2 fights at HW, is 47 years old, and hasn’t fought at LHW since UFC 57. Randy really needs to get at least 1 LHW win under his belt before he should be given top contenders at 205.

You guys are hatin on Rampage quite a bit.

It sucks that he stopped fighting, but think of the opportunity that he just got, he’s been fighting for a decade.

Not everyone is a Randy Couture and going to be fighting til they are 50, Rampage has been in some wars and who knows how bad he is beaten up.

He saw an opportunity to make some money in a different line of work, probably an opportunity he will never get again, he’s got kids and a family to feed.

Give the guy a break. The only problem I had is that he agreed to do TuF and the fight and then said no I’m going to do a movie. Other than that, hard to blame him.

Umm, Randy IS beneath Rashad in the 205 division. You say that he beat a washed up Liddell, but Couture lost to that same Liddell twice in a row. The fights were separated by only 2 years, so it’s not as though the Chuck that fought Randy was any different.

Plus, it would be a lose lose situation for Rashad. If he won, Randy’s age would be the excuse and people will just say he’s washed up. I have a lot of respect for Rashad, so maybe you should ask yourself why your one of the few that thinks Rashad should’ve fought Couture.

by Noel on Oct 3, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You’ve got to be kidding? Two years can make a big difference. No way Rampage could have ever touched the Chuck Liddel that fought Randy Couture.

by GSP4Prez on Oct 3, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He beat that Liddel too.

by Vulcano on Oct 3, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course he did, Randy Couture is a wrestler not a boxer. Randy’s boxing has gotten better now that he’s older, but nothing special and also remember that his hands aren’t the fastest and heaviest + Chuck’s td defense and you have or atleast had a favorable matchup for Chucky. Rampage on the other hand was always better than Chuck at Chuck’s own game, he had more punching power, better technique and most importantly better defense which he used to come back and counter. He was simply just tougher than Liddell was, if Rashad could have beaten that Liddell we don’t know cause he’s just starting to come into his own years after Liddell went out of his prime.

by RoBerto on Oct 3, 2009 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rampage definately had better defense than Chuck, considering Chuck’s defense was basically just having a cast iron jaw. I wouldn’t say that Rampage had better technique than Chuck though. Rampage may have had a more crisp boxing style of punching, but Chuck could actually pick up his leg and kick someone, a feat I have never seen Rampage do well. Chuck has also used elbows and a few knees as well. As far as power goes, I would say they where about even. Whenever either of them hit someone, that person fell down. They both had great KO power.

As far as I am concerned, only Randy and Rampage beat Chuck when he was in his prime. Randy went on to get KO’d in the next 2 fights, but Rampage was able to win his rematch with Chuck right around the time Chuck was starting to fade. I would have liked to have seen the rematch between Chcuk and Rampage sooner than we did. I think it would ahve been a war, but probably would have ended the same. Rampage seemed to have Chuck’s number.

by naturalshadow on Oct 4, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Captain Paycheck does need to prove himself. Remember he was trounced out of the HW division first then trounced out of LHW division second before he retired. Now that Big Nog sent him packing again – i would think the man needs to prove himself as a contender before getting his 15th undeserved title shot.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 4, 2009 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah he did, Chuck may have had a more diversified striking game but im talking about their boxing technique which was the deciding factor in both fights. Rampage was a little wild back in the day though when they fought in Pride but he still had that defense and chin. He improved his technique/defense and movement over the years and this second time they fought he had just gotten too good of a boxer for Liddell!

I think Vera is a very good test for him and if he loses then what? Does that mean Vera can take Rashad hell no! Good choice for Rashad and those who disagree stop hating for a second and think about it

by slapurface on Oct 3, 2009 6:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Randy needs to prove himself??? Randy beat the two longest defending 205 champions in UFC history when they were both in the prime of their careers. He’s coming off two losses to guys who have bowel movements bigger than Rashad and are higher ranked in a higher division than Rashad. And beating Randy wouldn’t do anyting for Rashad?!? What a disrespectful punk! Beating Randy Couture puts you in the history books. It’s something you can tell your grandkids about and they’ll know what it means. A win against Thiago won’t be rememebered in 6 months and all it will get Rashad is another chance to fall asleep at Machida’s feet. Rashad is one pompous self-important little twerp. He should’ve done that LOVE BOAT movie when he had the chance, cause when Rampage comes back from Hollywood he’ll make sure Rashad won’t have any teeth left in his head to smile for the camera.

by shonuff on Oct 3, 2009 11:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well thiago will whoop his a$$ and people will remember it because thiago will be a contender for his career. I agree with the rest of your post Randy is a great fighter. The only person who has ever destroyed him is chuck every other fight he has lost to it was a war. I like how everyone thinks nog is a pimp and Randy is nothing after he beat randy, that fight was a war both landed great shots. I dont get why everyone is writing Randy off after that great fight with Nog.

by mma guru on Oct 4, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ign’ant haters, Bro…they ain’t nuttin but ignant haters. Buncha Jonny-come-lately fan-fairies with no sense of history, perspectiv, objectivity. or the true meaning of greatness. They can’t see anything but the W/L. They see "Sugar"s one loss and Randy’s 8 and can’t grasp the fact that Randy has had more title fights than Rashad has had sparring matches and Randy has more wins against UFC champions than Rashad has against top-20 contenders. If Rashad wants to talk about Randy’s last two losses, he needs to take his punk ass up to Heavyweight and see how he does against Brock and Nog. He wouldn’t last 1 round with either of those monsters. And he’s talkin’ all cocky when he’s coming off a loss himself. And these wankers on here have about a 15 minute memory and a 10 second attention span so all they can fathom is what they see in the promo highlight reels.

by slapurface on Oct 4, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t say that. If Rashad beat Randy, I would definitely give him his props. But I’d lay odds 3 to 1 against that happening. Rashad has better KO power than Couture, but he’s nowhere near as smart, as strong, or as good a wrestler. But we’re not gonna find out, cause Rashad is too chicken to face a legend like Couture. He’d rather fight Thiago who is 1-1 against ranked opponents.

by shonuff on Oct 4, 2009 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

gsp4prez rampage already beat the chuck liddel that beat couture in pride youtube it newb

n guru n shonuff i think rashad was refering to the rankings on his track back to a titleshot when he said randy is a lose/lose situation…yes having a win over captain america would b an accomplishment for his career but wouldnt move him into title contention cause randy isnt ranked anymore at lhw

by hehehe hahaha on Oct 4, 2009 7:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dude, I guarantee you if Rashad could pull off a win against Couture, he’d automatically be #1 contender. Rampage got back to #1 contender by beating Wanderlei…you think Wanderlei coming off a 1-3 W/L was ranked higher than Randy who’s only 1 loss away from his last title defense? Don’t foget Randy was coming off 2 losses when changed weight to beat Chuck Liddell for the LHW belt, and was coming off 2 losses when he moved weight to beat big Tim for the HW title. And he still looks as good now as he did then.
