Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Paul 'Semtex' Daley joins AKA in the Matt Hughes calling-out party

Semtex

Props: Telegraph.co.uk

Quoteworthy:

"[I want] someone who has a name and will be a challenge. I’ve called out Matt Hughes as he’s a big name and would be a challenge for me. People are saying I have got no wrestling, so watch me beat the best wrestler ever in the welterweight division. I don’t want to call Matt Hughes names or nothing like that. I don’t need to make fun of him -- he did a great job of that himself when he was the coach on the Ultimate Fighter -- but it is a fight I’d like. Beating Hughes would make a little noise and I am all about making a bit of noise."

–- On the heels of finishing Martin Kampmann in his Octagon debut at UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19, former Elite XC standout Paul Daley sets his sights on ex-champion Matt Hughes, joining AKA boys Josh Koscheck and Mike Swick in a long line of hungry contenders gunning for Mr. Country Breakfast. The heavy-handed "Semtex" vaulted himself to the upper echelon of welterweights after replacing an injured "Quick" at last month's event, but was his knockout over "The Hitman" enough to get him a one-way ticket to Farmtown? Or does Hughes have bigger fish to fry?

As long as Hughes loses I’m happy…I’ve heard KOS, Swick, Daley, and Hardy as rumours but think KOS would have the best chance at beating him…I like Swick/Daley too

by McArthur on Oct 2, 2009 9:21 AM EDT reply actions

LOL…calling out Matt Hughes seems like the “in” thing to do nowadays. Like I said when Kos called him out…it’s a smart move for these younger guys. Hughes is coming off a decent win and is a legend in the sport and still has a big name but his skills are not where they used to be and the sport has evolved past him in many aspects. The window for getting credit for beating an ageing Hughes is closing and all these younger up and comers know that. So why not call him out? They hope to get a fight with him and get a win now while it will still look good rather than wait until Matt is reduced to the same stature that Liddell is at now where a win isn’t as coveted.

by Buster Bluth on Oct 2, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that window has already closed. Beating Hughes is not impressive and anyone with any kind of take down defense should be able to TKO Hughes. It’s fine to call out Hughes, but don’t try and act like you did anything special after beating him. These younger guys should eat him up with ease at this point. Serra just happened to be one of the few guys left that Hughes could LnP against.

by F F3d0R on Oct 2, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

good points boys. i couldn’t agree more. what bugs me is that Hughes still feels he’s relevant and continues to suggest rematches with GSP, and Alves

by McArthur on Oct 2, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Hughes could beat Daley and Hardy. Maybe not Kos or Swick…

by Synyster on Oct 2, 2009 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I want to fight Hughes at UFC 108. He’ll accept if he’s not a total pussy.

by PW on Oct 2, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

No your wrong when you say anyone with a takedown defense can beat Hughes. Two of the best guys beat him using that but he was still able to get GSP and Thiago down. If you don’t have a ground game, your in for a long night of Hughes laying on top of you and punching you in the face and ribs repeatedly. Paul is a great fighter and one of my new favorites but he is calling out Hughes early imo, he should still take the win but one wrong mistake loses him an entire round to Hughes’ gnp. Kos on the other hand would be very hard for Hughes to handle.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Oct 2, 2009 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

In other news, Daley is also calling out Militech, Carlos Newton and Shonie Carter. Why are all these guys calling out Hughes? His name would have looked great on your resume 2 years ago, why not call AJ or GSP? Where is AJ in all this contender talk?

by jay on Oct 2, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

AJ needs to beat a top 20 imo before he’s considered. Imo he would beat a ton of guys at WW in the UFC that are potential contenders but has yet to do so.

by McArthur on Oct 2, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Mac, what up brother. I thought you were ignoring me, lol. I am going to be in KW next weekend for the Octoberfest baseball, do you play?

by jay on Oct 2, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

ya buddy…play “B” ball in town and we are playing…been REAL busy with work and my little one and might be again next weekend too so we’ll see if I can play or not…what division are you in and what’s your team name?? you guys goin’ festin’ at night too or just down for the day time? Let me know…

by McArthur on Oct 2, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Rumble is about to have his 7th fight in the UFC and he’s barely scratching the surface, the guy needs to grow a set of balls and step up a couple of levels.

by Oskarbravo on Oct 2, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

if hughes looks as in shape as he did for his last fight he will still be tough for anybody in that weight imo. and why shouldnt hughes be calling out the best ? he wants to test himself what is wrong with that ?

by boyer on Oct 2, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

AJ shot down his chance to play with the top dogs of the WW division when he turned down a fight with Ben Saunders to fight Luigi Fioravanti. Ben told me himself at the UFN weigh ins in Tampa this past Feb. If he would have taken that fight, win or lose, they’d be matching him up vs someone better than Luigi and whatever else can they give him.

Just my opinion, but AJ isn’t worth half the hype that alot of guys give him. At 175 lbs, he got taken down (a few times) and choked out by Rich Clementi, whos a lightweight. And even though he wasn’t winning the stand up exchanges, he was hanging in there pretty good.

AJ MAY be good later on, but right now he’s nothing IMO. I’d like to see Hazelett rip his arm out of his socket.

by Synyster on Oct 2, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

jay…I replied stuck in mod…my team is probably playing too…I’ll wait to see if I get outta mod in a while…just in case I don’t and can’t find ya…craig@pdskw.ca or facebook under same email

by McArthur on Oct 2, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Mac, I don’t know the team name, we are just a bunch of guys from the same league putting a team together. Not an organized team. Playing E or Rec. whatever it is called now. Not festin’ though, I don’t drink. I am going to hit you up on the facebook tonight after work.

Scratch that Riggs would kik Shields behind

by The Legacy on Oct 2, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

HAHAHA!!! i hate matt hughes as much as the next guy, but this daley kid couldn’t even hold water in EliteXC! did he ever win a fight for that org. lol, hughes would tool this guy on the ground

by deuce 4 on Oct 2, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

He had one fight in EliteXC and lost to Jake Shields (who is considered by many to be a top 5 WW). Is that your definition of not being able to “hold water”? Hughes got destroyed by Alves, who supposedly was gonna get taken down and dominated by a wrestling legend. I’m not saying Semtex is up to Alves’ level yet, but to write him off against Hughes is a BIG mistake.

by Oskarbravo on Oct 2, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

He was losing to a journeyman in Nick Thompson as recently as recently as last February as well.

man i wish jake shields was in the UFC so he can wipe everyone out and take on GSP!

by Mikeybear on Oct 2, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Shield sucks. Its more hype behind him than anything, hes a good wrestler and decent grappler but he shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence as GSP.That kid has absolutely no stand up whatsoeva and would get destroyed by Johnson,Swick,Kos, u name em.Any1 with some decent takedown submission defense would kik shields behind.Overated

by The Legacy on Oct 2, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree that Shields is a bit overrated and would not be able to take out Fitch or Alves, but i would love to see what he can do against Kos or Swick, i don’t think that Johnson would destroy him either, Shields would probly submit him. don’t really need to talk about what GSP would do to him.

by bullsh*t on Oct 2, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Burkman would even give shields hell

by The Legacy on Oct 2, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

He called out Matt Hughes, not GSP, so he wouldn’t be fighting the best wrestler in the Welterweight division if he did fight Hughes. Why aren’t any of these guys calling out GSP? Fear?

by Freddy on Oct 2, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I really don’t get why these guys keep calling Hughes out? Hughes is past his prime and has only a few fights left in him. I mean its like people calling out Ken Shamrock or Tank Abbott, those guys are done. Matt Hughes was an amazing fighter in his prime, now it is GSP turn and there is really no one in the welterweight divison who is going to beat him.

by bobby on Oct 4, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m actually starting to feel sorry for Hughes. It’s starting to sound like Big Tim calling out an old Shammy.

by Collin on Oct 2, 2009 9:21 AM EDT reply actions

Semtex would be a scary proposition for the Hughes of 09… He’ll get his head smashed off!! and I for one am all for seeing that!
WAR DALEY!

You do know that Daley’s record against fighters whose primary base is Wrestling/BJJ is absoutely terrible don’t you?

by JT on Oct 2, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

These scrubs are calling him out now that he is past his prime. They think a win over Hughes should get them a title shot. AKA would rather hurt each other in practice, causing each other to miss fights instead of fighting each other and getting paid. Laughable.

by tiger_style on Oct 2, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

Hughes should quit right now before he gets seriously injured against heavy hitters like Daley,Swick,Koscheck and Johnson.

by Lester The Pimp on Oct 2, 2009 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

My money is on Hughes ducking everyone of them. He’ll go for a guaranteed win. Is Gina Carano in the WW division?

by ~Savage~ on Oct 2, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Gina by TKO.

Jk lol Matt Hughes was a great champ but he’s way past his prime.

by frosnt on Oct 2, 2009 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

awww poor hughes :-( lol
Everyone wants to kick his ass. cuz they know they can.

by BVNXIII on Oct 2, 2009 9:39 AM EDT reply actions

Hughes is just like Chuck, they both still have the ability but neither one has evolved their game. One dimensional fighters are a way of the past.

by ~Savage~ on Oct 2, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I can see these guys calling Hughes out to help their careers, but here’s an idea, why don’t they step up and fight each other. But I do have to say that I would like to see a Hughes vs Kos. match.

by brandon childers on Oct 2, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions

Call me crazy! But, I gotta go with Hughes on this one! I just don’t think Daley can stop his shots and Hughes will easily control him after a take down! However, if Matt tries to “prove” he’s not one dimensional and tries to bang, he’ll get picked apart!

by Dana's a CrossDresser on Oct 2, 2009 9:57 AM EDT reply actions

i think hughes would take him down easily too.. style wise, it’s not the best matchup for daley..

but he seems confident or he wouldn’t be calling out hughes..

either daley’s ground game and tdd has gotten alot better, or paul thinks hughes’ is that far past his prime that he could get an easy win?

still, i like this matchup for both fighters..

by stinky~fingers on Oct 2, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the match-up as well! So what would be your prediction if they meet up?

by Dana's a CrossDresser on Oct 2, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

“…Watch me beat the best wrestler ever in the welterweight division.”

Sorry, but GSP is by far the best wrestler in the WW Division. I think Hughes would be a tough matchup for this newcomer.

by ducknow on Oct 2, 2009 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not sure what these up and comers are thinking.

“I want to beat someone past their prime!”

Is that a replacement for beating GSP? Gun for the top ladies.

Pretty sad, kids.

by DubNub on Oct 2, 2009 10:38 AM EDT reply actions

Why is it that guys like Anthony Johnson are being spoon fed mid-level opponents and guys like Hardy and Semtex are being thrown to the wolves? AJ is about to have his 7th fight in the UFC against a guy who is nowhere near the top 10. Give him Koscheck, Fitch or Alves and stop building (or protecting) him. I really don’t think anybody deserves a shot against GSP if they cant beat Koscheck, Fitch or Alves

by Oskarbravo on Oct 2, 2009 10:48 AM EDT reply actions

Kos would beat Hughes. As would IMO Fitch. However, Swick and especially Daley IMO would get taken down and pounded out by Hughes.

by Neil on Oct 2, 2009 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

I dont know why everyones bashing Hughes. Hes lost to the best WW in the world twice an holds one victory over him. Lost to a Thiago Alves who was prolly well over 185 on fight day an still took the fight. Even kept Serra out of his element on the ground. I think everyone that bashes on em need to step in the cage an do more than jus run down a pioneer of the sport

by Sgroover45 on Oct 2, 2009 11:05 AM EDT reply actions

Seems to be a growing trend this. I can understand the AKA boys and Semtex looking to make a name for themselves by beating what used to be the biggest name in the WW div, in Hughes.

But, it seems a little off to me. I’m not a big Hughes fan, but it’s pretty obvious what’s going on. Hughes is well past his best and wouldn’t pose such a threat to these guys as he once would, so clearly they’re looking for an easy win. From a career point of view, it’s clever of them but we can all see through this.

If the AKA boys and Daley really want our respect and recognision maybe they should fight some real contenders, like each other, Alves, or Rumble Johnson (when ready).

Very, very true, totally agree!

by attakdog on Oct 2, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

by Stinky nuts on Oct 2, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

How about Rumble Johnson vs. Swick, Kos, Fitch, or Daley? Those would all be interesting fights.

by Stinky nuts on Oct 2, 2009 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

thats the thing, stinky.

the ufc ww divison is so great, any fight would be interesting..

i could go on all day matching exciting fights..

rumble/daley

daley/swick

swick/thiago

thiago/rumble

rumble/swick

swick/kampmann

kampmann/thiago

and so on, and so on..

Sorry UKMMA, didn’t see your post.

by JayJay on Oct 2, 2009 11:31 AM EDT reply actions

No problem dude; Alves would smash these jokers right. I don’t like Hughes but these guys trying to make their way up the ladder by beating him just seems daft. They’re better than that; I mean Fitch and Kos are ahead of Hughes in most people’s rankings anyway.

by UKMMA on Oct 2, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

i’m calling matt hughes out too. come fight me, pussy.

man i didn’t realize the welterweight division was this shallow.

by chris on Oct 2, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

LOL hughes is a marked man, he shouldn’t have signed the deal and went off into the sunset with his serra win under his belt. These guys are pretty brave considering hughes hasn’t looked so good lately but I still think he would probably beat daley and maybe swick, but not fitch and kos.

by nathan on Oct 2, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

These guys are p*ssies who dont wanna call out top fighters, plain and simple.
They can look good in the eye of the casual fan with a win over a once dominant fighter, but they will only get LESS respect from the hardcore fans who see exactly how big of tools theses guys are.
So much for wanting to fight the best boys (STRESS THE WORD BOYS PLEASE)

by f*ck it on Oct 2, 2009 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

I say give this kid trigg while trigg is not at the top of the ww list he is still a name nd it will help daily to get more fan base then let him fight hughes and ultimatly make a good run at the title if he can get past to aging vets

by Jamie the peach on Oct 2, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

I actually understand Daley calling out Hughes. I think it would be a good matchup for both guys. Daley still needs to make more a name for himself to casual fans and Hughes needs to prove he can’t hang with the young guys. I don’t like Kos and Swick calling him out though. Evidently Kos realized he can’t hang with today’s top welterweights (GSP, Alves) and Swick is knocking on the door of a title shot, so he needs to focus on GSP.

by sirmixachap on Oct 2, 2009 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

I believe Hughes would get this kid on the ground, steal his lunch money, give him a wedgie, and make him say “uncle” – just like Jake Shields did.
