Report: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to face UFC 106 winner of Carwin vs Lesnar for heavyweight title

Big Nog

It doesn't look as if former Pride FC and UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is going to get that rematch he wanted with Frank Mir -- at least not yet.

But as far as consolation prizes go, he's going to do a helluva lot better than a year's supply of Turtle Wax.

"Minotauro" is being penciled in for an early 2010 appearance against the winner of Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 106 on November 21 for the heavyweight championship, according to The Wrestling Observer via Inside Fights.

The Brazilian coughed up his Interim title to Mir at UFC 92 in December 2008. It was a bout in which the grizzled veteran was finished for the first time in his career.

Nog supporters blamed a Staph infection for his lifeless performance. The Mir side credits the victory to the Las Vegas native's improved striking and perfectly executed gameplan.

Whatever the case, Nogueira looked like his old self when he returned to best former division kingpin Randy Couture at UFC 102 in Portland. The win was not only "Fight of the Night," but impressive enough to land him another crack at the UFC gold.

UFC 106: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" is set to go down at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21. The event will also include the promotional debut of Minotauro's twin brother Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as he takes on Luis "Banha" Cane.

And if Big Nog can go all the way, don't be surprised to see Frank Mir waiting for him in the second half of 2010, assuming he gets past Cheick Kongo at UFC 107.

Lesnar, Carwin, Nogueira and Mir. Anyone want to start laying odds as to who will be the champ this time next year after all the dust settles?

thats bull sh!t. !
cain beat kongo and will beat big ben he should get next shot.
just like nate and hendo have to go at it before they get a shot at spider. nog needs to beat mir to get his shot. if he was so hurt then rematch. i’m a cain velaquez fan and i think he needs a shot

by Mikeybear on Oct 2, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

CAIN!
anyones else forget that he is a heavyweight?
beat down jake o’brien
destoyed Kongo!

Nog has a 10 year jump on them where is the #2 HW of all time and was on the top 6 P4P best fighter list for the better part of this decade until his loss to Mur. He deserved a shot at the title before Carwin who until GG had not fought anyone in the top 15 HW range.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 2, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed, nnr!~

i actually think nog should get the title shot now!~

nog is a way moe legit to be getting a title shot..

i have nog ranked higher than carwin and lesnar..

top 5 hw!~

1, fedor

2, nog

3, lesnar

4, aa

5, dos santos

~ barnett would probably be ranked 4, but i kicked him out of my ranks.. hate all u want.

by stinky~fingers on Oct 2, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s still up and coming but with all of these scenarios where does Dos Santos fit in?

by getrawbc on Oct 2, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

i put dos santos over carwin and cain becasue he has two wins over top 10 hw’s..

spot/5 could easily be a tie between 3 people..

the top 3 are solid arguments for all..

by stinky~fingers on Oct 2, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Dos Santos has explicitly stated that he won’t fight for the title so long as Big Nog is in the picture.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 2, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Is AA supposed to be Andrei Arlovski at number 4? Even after back to back knockouts? Seems generous to me.

by JoePlumber on Oct 2, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

this is what the order of title shots should be:

1) Big Nog!!!!!!
2) Dos Santos
3) Carwin
4) Cain

by john G on Oct 2, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not a Cain Velasquez fan, but I still think he gets the nod over Nog. The Nog/Mir 2 fight needs to happen. Nog got creamed in the first fight, sick or not, and one win isn’t enough for another shot at the title.

by naturalshadow on Oct 2, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Your seriously going to use wins over Jake O’Blanket and Cheick “IQ of an Eggplant” Kongo to justify a title shot for Brown Pride? And that was hardly a dominating win over Kongo. All Brown Pride did was hump him after getting knocked on his ass every round.

by PW on Oct 2, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I am not saying he is a better fighter than Nog, and I don’t think he is, but at this time I do think he is more deserving of a title shot.

by naturalshadow on Oct 2, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

u would rank cain above nog?

i dont know if cain would make my top 10.

maybe ~ 10ish

by stinky~fingers on Oct 2, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly right p dub. Given the hype Cain was pitiful against Cheick ‘for my ground game’ kongo. And in no way do his performances thus far give me any reason to say he is a shoe in against Ben. In fact I see Ben winning and exposing Cain as overrated.

mur Nog probs should happen, but does mur deserve another title shot if he did win so fast? Blah. Same result if he fights lesnar again. Unfortunately his 1st was a fluke. Won’t repeat. Nog probs won’t win, but he stands a much better chance.

Odds of beating Brock?
Mur- 15% chance
Cain 20% chance
Nog- 30-35% chance
Carwin- 40% chance

And I hope one of em does it.

by Daniel worby on Oct 2, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

the odds of beating brock imo

mir = 25%

cain = 10%

carwin = 40%

nog = 60%

fedor = 95%

by stinky~fingers on Oct 2, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

No Stink- I certainly wouldn’t rank Cain above Nog. I just think that Cain, and possibly Dos Santos, are more deserving of title shots at this time than Nog. I think that the Mir/Nog 2 fight makes the most sense.

by naturalshadow on Oct 2, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

cain? who has he beat? kongo wow who has kongo beat? cro cop witch doesn’t mean alot anymore. cain has alot to prove first.

by roy on Oct 2, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

The only way to beat Brock is to keep him from executing his game plan. He has gotten better at sub defense so best to stay on the feet and dance around him until you find the right angles. Yes, the dude is a rhino, but we have seen him lose before and will see him lose again…hopefuly to Nog.

by Spitforce on Oct 2, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Odds of beating Brock:

Nog = 60%

Carwin = 40%

Cain = 12% and thats being Generous

Fedor = NO MOtherFOckin DOUBT!!!!!!!

I would be curious to see how AA vs. Brock would play out. dre’s footwork and athleticism could mke a fight with Brock really interesting

by john G on Oct 2, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

The winner of Lesnar vs Carwin will beat Nog. I don’t think Nog will be able to get a submission. Nog will just get his face pounded by size 4XL gloves of Carwin or Lesnar.

by ProKev on Oct 3, 2009 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Cain vs Mir sounds like a good match up as long as they both win there next fight. If Mir wins against Cain and NOG wins or loses against Brock assuming those will be the future match ups then we get to see the Mir & NOG 2 and roy will have a nice slogan after his name LOL.

by Puck Head on Oct 2, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

good idea…

either way, i think the winner of cain/rothwell should fight the winner of kongo/mir.. and the losers should fight..

both would be good fights, regardless~

by stinky~fingers on Oct 2, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Mir is Garbage…He should be fighting Wes Sims!

I would like to see Randy beat the crap out of Mir!

I would like to see Anderson Silva come into the fight at 207 lbs, giving up 40 lbs to Mir, and just Destroying him!

Seriously, I dont know that Mir can beat Roy Nelson!

by john G on Oct 2, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Not so sure he will get past Rothwell, and Mikeybear I would in no means refer to his fight with Kongo as a destruction. He was rocked several times and never finished.

by ASR on Oct 3, 2009 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Right on Brock will get the respect he deserves after this one!

by Puck Head on Oct 2, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Cain is garbage I said it since day 1 (ok he’s not terrible but not championship caliber by any mean, I mean are you serious? He would get destroyed by a good striker that can sprawl and not take him to the ground and any of the other big wreslters would crush him and the BJJ guys would submit his ass!) and just when the Nog Couture fight got announced I said that Carwin and Nog (if he looks good against Randy) are the only guys in the UFC that a fight with Lesnar would appeal to me… YAY!!!!!!

by Edgecrusher71 on Oct 2, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Cain will be better off (as would have Carwin) by NOT being rushed into title shots. Mark my words, Carwin’s career will suffer after he is beaten soundly by Lesnar. Cain will benefit by climbing the ladder more slowly, and if he proves he’s got the goods in his next couple fights, he’ll be better prepared for a title shot.

As for Nog, he does make the most sense to be next in line. His total body of work dwarfs any of the other possibilities.

by CL on Oct 2, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree CL but the climbing the latter wasn’t much of an option for Carwin at his age.

by Edgecrusher71 on Oct 2, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I just think one more fight for Carwin vs Cain as a co-headliner prior to a title shot would have benefitted him. Provided he won, his title shot would have come six months later tops. The spotlight will be very bright for Carwin this soon, inexperienced as he is, and I see Lesnar’s big advantage as less a physical one, but rather one of composure. I’m not a Lesnar fan, but he’s looked poised and comfortable in main events. He’s actually shown good tactical savvy in keeping fights in areas as to play to his clear strengths.

by CL on Oct 2, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Well looks like we will see Carwin vs Nog some time in early 2010.

Unless, of course, Carwin isn’t able to stop Lesnar, which I believe will be true.

It was never about him being ex-WWE or his skills, just his hideous attitude (I speak for myself).

OJR, I can understand your feelings about lesnar. I feel the same way about BJ Penn- total butthead! But both guys can fight pretty darn good so I’ll look past it to enjoy their skill.

by Wes on Oct 2, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

PW – I don’t know if you had seen my posts before UFC 102 but myself and John were the only people who said that Big Nog was gonna dominate captain paycheck from bell to bell. Again i will go with my boy Big Nog right here with domination. I wanna say triangle.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 2, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Brock ain’t Captain Paycheck. I have long maintained that the only way to submit Lesnar is the way Mir did — by attacking his knees and ankles. He has virtually no neck to choke, and his arms and shoulders are so massive that he will be able to power out of most subs. As for Lesnar, I tink his best strategy for Nog is also to do what Mir did. Use his huge fists, long reach and power to beat Nog around the ring until he collapses.

by PW on Oct 2, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Bob Sapp’s arms and neck>>>>>>>>>Brock’s arms and neck. And yes I know Lesnar’s a better fighter, but if you can lock in a sub on Sapp, you can lock one in on Lesnar.

by Diceman on Oct 2, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know about that Sapp ran out of steam wich was clear he was exhausted Brock won’t get exhausted like Sapp and if you seen the Lashley & Sapp fight lashley was the stronger of the two and dominated Sapp from the begining and Brock is a little more physical and athleticaly gifted than lashley.

by Puck Head on Oct 2, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Puckhead: How do you know Brock wont get exhausted? Have you ever seen him in the 4th round? I know Nog can go ALL NIGHT long, take a beating and catch you slipping iin the end!

NNR: Damn Right Brother! and Im RIDING with you again on this one. Lets start the Big Nog Warwagon right now! Like Nog said, He is going to TOY with Brock! The rightful champion, and 2nd best HW of ALL TIME, big Nog, is getting his belt back!!! The Ufc just isnt right without Big Nog wearing the gold!

by john G on Oct 2, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

john G Brock work outs are much like sherks being a large man it’s tougher to get oxygen to the muscles so they don’t fatigue but Brock has proved it in his wrestling that he can go full out and anyone that know wrestling know it’s just as fatigueing as a MMA fight NOG doesn’t struggle on the ground and stays calm but against Brock he will have to struggle a lot more than normal trying to move big man I almost gaurantee if it came down to the 5th round Brock would take over.

by Beaver on Oct 3, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

!Big Nog! v. Brock I SMELL A UPSETTTTTTTTTTTTT……..DOES ANYBODY ELSE AHAHA IF BROCK LOSE’S TO A BEAT UP NOG IT WILL BE A CLASSIC MATCH AND I’LL LUV IT HAHA WHERES???THE BROCK WAGON!!!!

by jdub on Oct 2, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. This will be a true test for Brock after he dismantles Carwin and I can’t wait. On a side note, I don’t know where all the hype came with Cain, but I’ve been unimpressed. Put him against Mir and if he can get past him I’ll consider him legit.

by F F3d0R on Oct 2, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

YES! YES! YES! YES! I would have loved to see him trash mir up and down that cage but this is even better. But who are we kidding Frankie will be out of the UFC by then.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 2, 2009 10:39 AM EDT reply actions

I’m sorry but he will get killed if he fights brock. The guy looks punch drunk 24/7. No way he will be able to control brock’s strength to get a submission.

The UFC just wants to add another legend to Brock’s resume.

by tiger_style on Oct 2, 2009 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

Agree with this post. Nog can’t fight the way he has in the UFC and hope to win. Never count Nog out though.

by jay on Oct 2, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

tiger-

I agree for the most part but I see Big Nog taking Brock’s back or neck and making Brock scramble for his MMA life.

by OJR on Oct 2, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Brock doesn’t have a neck, and his back is the size of Texas…you ain’t takin’ it nowhere.

by shonuff on Oct 2, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Just like I thought Matt Serra would get destroyed by GSP in their first fight…

Stranger things have happened, my friend.

by OJR on Oct 2, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

No doubt OJR I believe Brock is going to win but you can’t count out the heavy handed big man Carwin either. Brock will not be able to control Carwin like he has his past opponents but the same goes for Carwin Endurance might play an issue and in that department I think Brock has it as much as Carwin says his is top notch I think Brocks is on another level when it comes down to the struggle Brock will wear down Carwin. Any wich way this fight is exciting because it’s no gaurantee as Carwin is a dangerous fighter against any MMA HW.

by Puck Head on Oct 2, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Brock will win, but I also think Nog presents the most danger/competition Brock has faced yet.

by F F3d0R on Oct 2, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Right on, F3dor! Nog is definitely the best fighter Brock will ever have faced, and if it were a fair fight, my money would be on Nog all the way. But it ain’t a fair fight and I don’t know if Nog can handle a guy who’s almost 60 lbs bigger than him AND a world class grappler. Much as I hate Brock, I think the odds would have to favor him.

by shonuff on Oct 2, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually Nog handled a guy more than 100 LBS more than him in Bob Sapp and submitted him. BUT… Lesanr is 10 X’s the fighter that Sapp is and I don’t see Nog pulling this off anymore. Lesnar by 3rd round stoppage.

by Wes on Oct 2, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Look at how Lashley tossed around Sapp as big as Sapp is he isn’t tough at all Brock would destroy Sapp much like Hog Man Sapp is a brutal fighter with little skill for MMA standards.

by Puck Head on Oct 2, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

im scared for his health :S

by Mike on Oct 2, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

I say NOG needs another win first…why does beating Randy and losing to Mir warrent a title shot. Imo there’s still time to make Dos Santos and NOG fight other guys to choose who will get the next shot. Why make announcements so soon when they change their mind half the time anyways. ie Henderson

by McArthur on Oct 2, 2009 10:45 AM EDT reply actions

Think about this match up as well Santos vs. Cain!! The winner between them assuming Cain wins his next fight gets another shot. The Hw division is greatly improved and even though NOG lost to Mir and I would prefer to see them fight again he is a proven veteran that has fought the best in the world and a perfect fighter to put against Brock to really show how good Brock is.

by Puck Head on Oct 2, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

His perrenial career means that he get to jump in front of whoever the f@ck is in line. Also there are no contenders after Carwin. Cain isn’t ready. Then the skill level takes a huge drop off. Even Dos Santos hasn’t had his ground game tested yet so too much of a liability to just send him there.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 2, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Santos and Cain then would be a great match up to see who’s next in line. Santos ground game should be tested and Cains striking defence would be tested? Santos is one of the best strikers and Cain has one of the best ground games I don’t think Cain could beat Carwin or Brock I would love to see Santos against Carwin power vs. accuracy but like you said against Brock his chances are slim on the ground but then really isn’t every HW chances slim on the ground against Brock?

by Puck Head on Oct 2, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Dos Santos probably wouldn’t fight Nog, cause the Nogs are his teachers/training partners, and they’re from the same “I won’t fight my friends” camp as Anderson and Machida.

by shonuff on Oct 2, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

lesnar vs. Nog, laasnargtaking it by size and strength. Ithink Carwin has thebest shot at de-throning Lesnar, but I don’t think it will happen. Theer si nothign I wouyld liek to see more than ANYONe beating WWF. I just don’t see it happening unti Dana dies and Fedor comes to UFC.

by Reedofolus on Oct 2, 2009 11:01 AM EDT reply actions

If Dana takes Hershel Walker up on his challenge, his funeral might not be that far off.

by shonuff on Oct 2, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Isn’t it obvious? This fight is being put together to give Brock more credibility sooner rather than later. Brock beating Cain will convince much less people of Brock’s ability than Brock beating Big Nog. Plus Brock vs. Big Nog will sell more tickets and PPVs.

by Toro AM on Oct 2, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

YES!

After Nog made me eat crow demolishing Randy, this was the first thing on my mind.

He schooled one of the greatest in the sport, his past cannot be denied, and I bet he won’t be sparring with frigging Forrest Griffin to take on a huge wrestler like Mir was. Those jerk-off punches ain’t stopping Nog.

I was hugging Mir’s nuts pretty hard for awhile, and while I still like him a lot, I think the Kongo fight will speak volumes about his relevency in the division.

by Jonny on Oct 2, 2009 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

If the in shape nog comes in I give him a chance against carwin, the way brock manhandled mir on ground imakes me not sure about that one

Nog has looked like steaming hot garbage in every one of his fights in the UFC except against old man Randy. Nog BARELY made it past fricken Herring. If he tries his regular strategy of blocking punches with his face round after round, he could seriously die in the cage against Cock Chestner.

War Nog!

by Instant_Noodle on Oct 2, 2009 11:13 AM EDT reply actions

I believe Nog is hands-down the best fighter in the UFC Heavyweight division…but in a division that spans 60 lbs, who’s the best doesn’t always matter. Carwin isn’t 1/4 the fighter Nog is, but I think he stands a better chance of beating Brock because he won’t be at such a huge size disadvantage.

I’d rather see Nog rematch Mir first, not because Nog doesn’t deserve a shot, but because I want him to shut Mir up and erase that BS loss. No way in hell Mir could knock out Nog without germ warfare (which is what he used last time).

by shonuff on Oct 2, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Barnett is a good example of the trouble NOG will be in against Brock as barnett and NOG have had some good close fights but Brock is bigger faster version of Barnett as far as the wrestling goes to control their opponents on the ground and will do much the same as he did to Mir if he faces NOG and Barnett would be a good tape to look at to see what Brock should do against NOG.

Poor Nog… he’s going to get brutally kayooed.

Lesnar or Carwin doesnt matter, they will both tear of Nogs head in the first round.

Beating Couture doesnt mean shit, neither him or Nog should be getting titleshots.

by Lester The Pimp on Oct 2, 2009 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

Well, Carwin hasn’t proved he’s title worthy yet but Nog has an impressive resume of wins. But he should have to rematch Mir first.

by Wes on Oct 2, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice. Mir beats Kongo in convincing fashion and gets title shot against Nog. Probably should get winner of Cain/Ben but since Nog wants the rematch and UFC is known for leapfrogging people, he’ll get the title shot with one win. And I’m going to go ahead and say Mir wins that fight again and in the exact same fashion. Staph or no staph.

This all is assuming Carwin KO’s Lesnar and Nog submits Carwin which is what I predict will happen.

by wAyNe on Oct 2, 2009 12:34 PM EDT reply actions

hehe some deep predictions. That would definitely shake things up in the heavyweight world rankings.

The way i see it happem:

Cain decisions Rothwell ->
Lesnar TKO’s Carwin ->
Kongo TKO’s Mir ->
Nog submits Lesnar ->
Cain decisions Kongo ->
Nog submits Cain ->
Lesnar (by that point way more experienced ) TKO’s NOG to take the title back

“Lesnar, Carwin, Nogueira and Mir. Anyone want to start laying odds as to who will be the champ this time next year after all the dust settles?”

lesner will still be champ. none of these guys stand a chance of beating him if he takes the fight to the ground and tenderizes their faces.

by Conan the Barbarian on Oct 2, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

to put it in nfl terms

Lesnar = pittsburg: current champ very physical

Nog = patriots: been awesome for a while had one bad fight

Mir = giants: good enough to beat anyone but not always the fav

Fedor = colts: established at the top for years, scary offense

cain = vikings: suddenly good but lets wait and see

dos santos = san diego: the new great team well rounded

randy = cowboys (big name, lots of history not that great at the moment)

I know I am late to the party but I have to comment on this. I’m glad Nogueria gets a shot at the winner of Carwin vs. Lesnar. ARMN has been in this game for so long; dominating Randy Couture the way he did gives him his second shot at UFC gold in my book. Heck, he even said he’d fight Frank Mir instead just to clear the air. I really wonder if Frank declined that bout?

I honestly believe Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueria would defeat both, Shane Carwin and Brock Lesnar. He’d probably SUB them both if not out point them via UD or SD.

Cain Velasquez has a lot of work ahead of him. He has been impressive no dout about it. But the kid is only like 26 or 28 so him not getting a shot is NOT a big deal. He also has Big Ben to defeat first. ARMN has many, many years of experience over Cain as well. Should they fight, man, that’d be the shit.

Overall…the UFC HW picture is getting better and better every day. Has been for a while.

J-money…No, that is Rodrigo.

What pleases doesn’t equal what benefits. What has more value, victories or losses? If you are champ long enough, surely others may understand the way you fight better than you yourself. Such are key to elevating your understanding and highlighting weaknesses in your game. ‘Learning without thought is labour lost, thought without learning is perilous’. Knowledge is useful if acted upon. I liken it to crafting a stool. some1 comes, sits on it, and it breaks. Do we cry, or pick up the pieces, evaluate and learn. Each loss breaks us, but we are given clues/screws that put in key places, with the right understanding will strengthen our foundation. This is what we need to embrace to EVOLVE

Thanks, Sun Tzu!

The only thing Nog could’ve learned from losing to Mir was that it was stupid to fight when you’ve got the bubonic plague.

What about Duffy? Lesnar got a title shot after 2 wins. Another 10 second knockout would put him up there.

nog will beat the lot of them simple as that
