Rumble at the Rhino: Wes Sims wants trilogy match with Frank Mir ... anywhere

Quoteworthy:

"If we had a time capsule, everyone knows that first fight [against Frank Mir], I won. Even if I hadn't stomped him I would've pounded him straight through the cage. When I dropped him on his head, he was unconscious. End result, he was laying unconscious and I had my hands raised. Second fight, I've said it so many times I believe it myself, I won. Everyone can see Big John made the wrong call. Sure I got rocked. But when I hit the ground, I was pulling guard, John stopped it too early, and it cost him his job.... I definitely want one more fight with Frank before I'm done. In the UFC, in the Spearmint Rhino, wherever it's going to have to happen, I want a third fight. I want to believe that there isn't a single night he goes to bed that he doesn't think about fighting me to redeem his honor. But he's probably mentally blocked me out of his head so he can live day to day. That's just my thoughts, though."

Where do we begin. Octagon veteran and current contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10, Wes Sims, talks about wanting a third and final fight against former interim heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, sometime in the future. Sims bragged (incorrectly) on the first episode of the show that he defeated Mir twice. The reality is he lost both matches via disqualification (kicking a downed opponent) and technical knockout (he argues premature stoppage). Regardless, Sims has convinced himself otherwise. And now that he's back in the spotlight wants another crack at the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist to demonstrate that he does indeed have his number -- even if it means getting in a barroom brawl at his old high-end strip club haunt, Spearmint Rhino, where Mir served as a bouncer. That's perhaps the only chance he might get ... at least in the near term. Mir is currently booked to take on Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 on Dec. 12. Meanwhile, Sims still has to prove he belongs back in the UFC with a solid run through the 16-man tournament-style show, which culminates with one final match at TUF 10 Finale on Dec. 5. Will it ever happen? Perhaps more important, do you want to see it happen? The pre-fight promos and smack talk alone could be epic.

Sims also said he never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Who knows, that might be a better fight than Mir/Cheick “I have no ground game” Kongo.

Kongo is gonna smash on Mir. This fight is like vitor-franklin or Silva Forrest, all these people will think he has a shot but in the fight it will be embarrassing. Then after that they could match him with Sims before zuffa send him packing into Strikeforce.

I would watch Sims fight just for the fact that you never know what type of sh*t he might pull. The guys is completely outside his mind…

As for Mir/Kongo, I see a few exchanges on the feet then ending with a takedown and SUB by Mir. Kongo needs to be matched up against strikers only.

Kongo is ‘tarded. He’ll knock Mir down, then go to the ground with him, like an idiot. Seven seconds after that he’ll be begging Mir not to rip his arm off.

Haha, “at the Spearmint Rhino”. I went there at like 6am after a bender when I was in Vegas my first time and the place was PACKED.

Does anyone know the full story about Sims leaking the results of the Kimbo fight a while back? I heard he snuck an iPhone into the house but I cant believe they wouldnt check their stuff. Then again, most guys dont want to blow an oppurtuinty like that.

One of my favorite MMA pictures. Not only is he stomping a downed opponent but he’s holding onto the cage to do it! So illegal, but it is Frank Mir so he probably deserves it.

agreed!

by john G on Oct 2, 2009 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, what a sight. thats what happens in a real fight, the Pride fights was as close to real fighting as you can get in sports.

by RoBerto on Oct 2, 2009 5:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Except Sims would of been holding the ropes for stability instead, which would have also been illegal

by Ermac on Oct 2, 2009 6:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In a real fight I’m going to hit you with objects and kick you in the nuts to win. I wouldn’t mess around in a real fight, mma is ordained fighting… even in PRIDE they denied the elbows.

haha all the D-bags agree on this..

by guyverbob on Oct 2, 2009 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah of course Cogito, I would def try to kill the other guy and do whatever if it came down to it

Fuck that, in a real fight, I will just take your back, set the hooks in, and tOy with you….90% of the people you would get into a fight with would have NO IDEA what to do once the hooks are set in!

FYi: Kongo is going to Obliterate Mir, then Mir willl lose another fight or 2, and he will just go to strikeforce and made to look like an amatuer by Werdum! Via Cavallo!

I didnt see the two fights, but, I have to admit that I kinda want to see the guy down helpless, then the finishing blow like kendo did to that brit dude. did I get the name right, kendo?

by kelpheadtwo on Oct 2, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You meant Hendo for Dan Henderson in his fight with Michael Bispring. Kendo is a form of Japanese martial arts I believe.

Oh man this dude Wes Sims is a joke. It takes balls to call out a two time UFC Heavyweight Champion, but Wes Sims is a fool. I don’t know what fanstasy world this guy is living in. Frank Mir would rip Sims into pieces. Wes would be lucky to make it halfway through the first round with Mir.

by Red on Oct 2, 2009 12:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It takes balls to call out a two time UFC Heavyweight Champion,

thats funny, mir is the weakest champ you could call out sims would have won the first fight for sure and 2nd was still tough for mir to win and you think he doesn’t stand a chance?maybe it looks like he let himself go a bit but he would lose due to that not because mir is so bad ass.

by natedog77 on Oct 2, 2009 1:27 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve never seen the 2 fights between the 2 so I just watched them now. Wes Sims is an idiot. Frank Mir was not unconscious with that weak little slam during that arm bar attempt. That stomp was definitely vicious and illegal. And that 2nd fight, it sure looked like a justified stoppage. I hope this guy doesn’t get back into the UFC. So not worthy.

Is he out of his mind? Big John lost his job from stopping a fight early after Frank Mir’s career highlight KO?

by GSP4Prez on Oct 2, 2009 3:30 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i know big john has stopped so many fights early..i cant figure out why people say he is the best ref…guess cause he’s been around forever

obviously brain damaged from too many blows to head!

It’s funny with Sims, he talks so much trash that you begin to start to believe he has a chance at winning, then he gets destroyed.

He did virtually the same thing with Tim Sylvia, he ended up screaming on the canvas on the verge of tears before the first round ended.

Frank Mir is a douche.

That fight will never happen. The UFC is pissed at Sims for leaking the story months ago that Kimbo lost his first fight in the house.
Maybe if Mir goes to strike force, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

by Dave O on Oct 2, 2009 9:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wes Sims’s mechanism is definitely broken. I’m pretty sure he is convinced his record is 37 – 0. You lost to Frank Mir…….and you lost twice, THE END. Its about as credible as if Chuck Liddell said he won the fight against Rashad Evans until the bit where he fell asleep, but in his eyes he still got the victory. Why would the UFC ever let him fight Mir again, and why would Mir want to fight him again. You have to win some fights first to get a shot at Mir.

by Chumpy on Oct 2, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Chuck was actually winning that fight against Rashad till he actually got caught and KO’ed. As for Sims this guy is a complete joke he brags about things that don’t even exist. He never even went close to beating Mir. The first fight he did an illegall stomp and he got knocked out the second one. What is he talkin about he beat Mir twice were in his dreams? This guy has always been a joke he went from the UFC to some shitty little events in the middle of nowhere to the show Iron Ring which was like a wanna be TUF that came on BET, to trying to make it to the UFC again we’ll see how he doea first. He is so lame and is not even that great of a fighter. BTW back in PRIDE u were allowed to pretty much do everything except u couldent elbow the head i think, bite, groin strikes or throat strikes and hair pulling or scratching along wit some other rules. PRIDE was the shit though, i miss the old days of PRIDE.

By “former interim heavyweight champion,” you of course meant, “former heavyweight champion.” He had the full-on belt too, you may recall.
