UFC Quick Quote: Anderson Silva will destroy Vitor Belfort on Jan. 2

anderson silva best pound for pound fighter in UFC

"I believe Anderson would destroy Belfort. I think it’s a very interesting fight. Belfort has good boxing skills and is a good athlete, but everybody knows that he has a weak psychological aspect and I think he will shake when he gets in the Octagon with (Silva). Let’s see if (Belfort) will put his new karate ... I mean old karate, new for him, in practice against Anderson."

-- Wanderlei Silva provides Sherdog.com with his prediction for the middleweight match up between 185-pound kingpin, Anderson Silva, and former light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort, which is scheduled for UFC 108 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2. "The Phenom" finished the "The Axe Murderer" in just 44 seconds more than a decade ago at UFC 17.5: "Ultimate Brazil," but that isn't stopping him from picking his former Chute Boxe training partner to score a decisive victory. Agree or disagree, Maniacs?

Come on Mania, I read the same article as you…why would you not report that Wanderlie is basically promising his fans that he will rematch Vitor in the future? To me that is much more interesting then his prediction on the fight!

Get with it!

I agree as well. Silva is too elusive and his footwork will be a factor. Silva by KO in rd1!!!!!!

by LJ on Sep 30, 2009 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope the Belfort bandwagoneers have already made reservations on the next train, cause the Belfort express is coming to a screaching halt.

Silva by absolute and total domination…

Followed by Vitor taking another 5 years to rebuild his fragile psyche.

by Cole on Oct 1, 2009 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Belfort has the best chance to beat Silva and I don’t think his head will be a factor in this fight. Cole go fuck yourself.

by Nokimono on Oct 1, 2009 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Intelligent reply. I assume you will be one of the first ones to shun belfort and praise silva after Vitor gets dismantled.

by Cole on Oct 1, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Belfort has been my favorite fighter since the begining you can check any post that i’ve ever put out and see that. I’ll never root for anyone fighting Vitor…or BJ for that matter. Douche

Dually noted, but your devotion to belfort will in no way prevent him from being utterly decimated by Silva.

Yeah right dude.vitor finished frankin twice as fast as Anderson did and worse.wanderlei is just mad because he lost to franklin and vitor ko’d him in 42 seconds

by Mirsad on Oct 1, 2009 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

did you just say vitor beat Franklin worse than Anderson did? HA. my cap locks dont get big enough for this one! I dont think rich had to get life changing plastic surgery after a couple of weak shots to the back of the head.

by JRE on Oct 1, 2009 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree jre
And not only once but brutally destroyed franklin 2 times
To land a punch on silva like he did on rich is not easy

negative. hands to fast. vitor has silvas number.

In your dreams, anderson will destroy him and make him look foolish.

by mma guru on Sep 30, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Vitor’s best weapon is his hand speed, but I don’t think it will help him this time, since Anderson is fast in every aspect of striking.

by naturalshadow on Sep 30, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

wow wandy is such a joke! he had maybe u good fights in the octogon then started talking trash about anderson silva now he’s pretty much sucking is balls in forgiveness cuz they made up.. wandy thingks belfort is gonna get his ass kicked. that’s funny coming fom a gu who got punked for his butt hard back in the day by belfort! keep sucking andersons balls wandy! ur a chump they should have u fight cro crop and then cut u both. maybe they can win in strikeforce or that waste of talent show holding the butterbean vs abbott

by casale4rmpdca on Sep 30, 2009 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

wow where did you learn to write?!?! and from what i deciphered of your nonsense, you don’t know what you’re talking about either

by big G castle on Sep 30, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

wanderlei was upset anderson let franklin train at his camp for the franklin/wandy fight but found out that anderson didnt train with rich he in fact just let him in the building to train with his guys.. and they talked it out and anderson actually said some good things about wandy, likewise from wandy’s side, it was just a misunderstanding

by randy murders on Sep 30, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I don’t agree. I think this will be an epic fight, two guys with the best boxing in all MMA (Penn might have an argument as well). Vitor has his head on straight, Andy seems to be a little cocky as of late. Great fight, Vitor is catching him just @ the right time.

by efisher on Sep 30, 2009 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

Penn got outclassed on the feet by GSP! Penn’s boxing is overrated.

by shonuff on Oct 1, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Forrest Grifin got destroyed because of his slow hand speed. Belfort does have fast enough hands that he should be able to compete with Silva, but Anderson’s head movement will be the deciding edge.

Vitor—Fast hands slow head movement
Silva—Fast hands fast head movement

by capt doug on Sep 30, 2009 9:52 PM EDT reply actions

plus they both hit hard, so i don’t expect to see them trading too many shots

by big G castle on Sep 30, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Not only slow hand speed but general slow body movement and reaction. That guy is an fn sloth. Vitor will crack as andy accumulates shot after shot on him.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 1, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Vitor-fast hands, but usually is a mental midget in the big show. With the exception of the cut on Couture and his one win over Wandy he has lost against all the big names. Maybe Extreme Couture will get his emotions in check and he will shine in this fight. I still don’t think quick hands is going to beat striking perfection. He has the headmovement of a bobblehead, in a car with shitty suspension, going down a pot hole ladden road. His angles are amazing and his thai clinch is second to none.

by Da Monkey on Oct 1, 2009 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Ah, no. Silva might win, but it aint gonna be a first round knockout. That’s absurd. Belfort is greased lightning in the first round.

by erba on Sep 30, 2009 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

Right on, Erba. Plus Couture is the only guy to ever finish Belfort with strikes and that was tied up on the ground. I don’t think Belfort has to worry about Silva’s punching power when Hendo, Liddell, and Yvel couldn’t KO him. Plus with both of them being evasive (Franklin didn’t land a single punch on Vitor), I’m betting they spend the first 4 minutes just feeling each outher out and finding their range. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that if either of them finishes this fight, it will be Silva by submission or possibly knees in the clinch.

by shonuff on Oct 1, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

silva for the win unless vitor catches him early. this should be dan’s fight, then i would pick dan by 4th round tko.

by Conan the Barbarian on Sep 30, 2009 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed. Silva will destroy belfort. He is to big for belfort and to good. Belfort won’t be able to get to Silva and will get picked apart.

by brac on Sep 30, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

I’m calling it….after watching Vitor’s video blogs and watching him destroy Franklin in the first round in under 3 min?? I’m jumping on the Vitor bandwagon….this guy has finally got his mental game together. He is finally in the right state of mind to become a champion, hes older, wiser, and more skilled. Plus 185 is the perfect weight for Vitor because hes not too bulky at this weight. They didn’t call im the PHENOM for nothing, the dude is BAAAD. He destroyed guys back in the day at HW so him ad MW is insane. All his MW bouts have so far ended in 1st round KO’s (correct me if I’m wrong). He’s younger, faster, and has the power to put A. Silva out!!! I love Wanderlei, but he is talking through sour grapes because he got beat embarassingly back in the day.

by Chadx23 on Oct 1, 2009 1:41 AM EDT reply actions

he koed Terry Martin in the second roound, but still all of his mw performances have been impressive.

by DL92 on Oct 1, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t understand how a guy who comes back into the UFC, doesn’t even fight at 185, then gets a title shot. Am I missing something when Hendo or Nate deserve it just a tad more?

by Crackbaby on Oct 1, 2009 2:54 AM EDT reply actions

Anderson has already defeated both of them. One of them will get their chance to lose after Belfort does.

by Jonny on Oct 1, 2009 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Uh, that doesn’t justify someone getting a title shot when they don’t deserve it. Who cares in Silva has fought Hendo or Nate once, shit doesn’t always happen the same the second time. I’d rather see Silva vs Hendo and Nate vs Vitor to be honest

by Crackbaby on Oct 1, 2009 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

with all do respect shut up u f*cken crackbaby! lol
hendo and nate had their chance already! they can try again after belfort. so let it go aight!

by BarrioVanNuysXIII on Oct 1, 2009 3:11 AM EDT reply actions

as i have already explained….this will be silvas last fight at 185 if he chooses to retire. he is going to fight “super fights” at light heavy and possibly heavywieght for the last two fights on his contract. hendo and nate will never get another chance and silva ducked fighting henderson. he had HIS managment float the idea of dan v. nate and HE faked having a hurt elbow. pathetic.

dana is a marketing whore and while this gives fans the fights they want to see most of the time, he screws fighters in the process. congrats selfish pricks, you robbed dan of his revenge. vitor is gonna get his ass kicked. hendo already owned him in pride. is is a lower caliber fighter.

by Conan the Barbarian on Oct 1, 2009 4:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Silva is ducking Dan? And I suppose Germany won WWII right? I am a huge Hendo fan and I feel he definitely deserves another shot, but Silva has never ducked anyone.

by Cole on Oct 1, 2009 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

then explain why silva’s manager started the idea of dan and nate fighting each other first whenm dana said dan earned another shot against anderson. then explain how anderson hurt his elbow until he realized dan wasn’t under ufc contract and poof…the elbow was “200%?”? explain these things or stfu. believing silva wouldn’t duck someone just because you ride his dick is stupid.

by Conan the Barbarian on Oct 1, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

right again, Conan! Silva is definitely ducking Hendo and Hendo would be wasting his time fighting Nate. He should move back up to 205 until Silva vacates the belt.

by shonuff on Oct 1, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

why the hell would silva duck someone he already beat convincingly? the reason silvas manager wanted hendo to fight nate is so that he can fight at light heavy more and not waste his time fighting two guys he already destroyed

by bk on Oct 1, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

If that were true, he would have vacated the belt and moved to LHW or could have called out a LHW that he wanted to fight. Instead he comes up with this whole thing about needing time off for elbow surgery until the heat to fight Dan died down and his people convinced Dana to make Dan and Marquart eliminate each other. As Conan, I, and others have repeatedly pointed out, Dan’s particular grappling skills and iron jaw pose a bigger threat to Silva than anyone else at MW or LHW. Vitor’s tools are the same as Silva’s but not as sharp. He wants no part of Dan, Machida, or the Nogs because those guys can either match his striking (Machida) or screw with him on his back (Hendo and Nog). So he calls out irrelevant people like Mir instead of defending his belt against Dan or making a run for Machida’s title.

by shonuff on Oct 1, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Great point shonuff Dan is his biggest threat and most experienced fighter at 185 the first fight was Dans own fault though for not showing up in shape against Silva as it was one of the main reasons he lost to Rampage as well he got tired and was not able to do the things he wanted to do. Silva won’t be able to do to Henderson what he did against Forrest if he tried he would of been KO the F out. Is it Silva hiding or is it the UFC protecting their best fighter? I for one want to see Dan get another shot I believe he has the best chance at 185.

by Puck Head on Oct 1, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

wow you guys are amazing… dan had his chance, if he was such a threat why didn’t he beat silva? try not to make too many excuses. plus why wouldn’t you want to see hendo vs nate? thats an awesome match up

by bk on Oct 1, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

If GSP never fought hughes twice he might not be the champ if Rampage was not allowed to fight Wandy because he lost to Wandy on Pride we might not of got to see that fight either. If you beat a fighter once you won’t get to fight him again?? By that I guess your against a Mir and NOG fight because Henderson was not in top form and many believe NOG wasn’t either are is that a excuse bk LOL.

by Puck Head on Oct 1, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

nog had a legitimate excuse, hendo just plain lost. if anderson is close to retirement he shouldn’t be fighting the same people over and over. when did i say he couldn’t fight him again? if he beats nate and silva beats belfort he has his shot right there. im not the one who’s saying silva is ducking a guy he already demolished

by bk on Oct 1, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

calling mir is a major mis-statement. if silva actually takes on mir, he will be made to look like a novice on the ground. mir looked the best he has ever looked against brock lesnar. brock just uses he enormous roided out mass of a body to hold him down and pound him. silva weighs much less than that. mir will toss him to the ground and do whatever he wants to do. don’t get me wrong, it would be an interesting fight, but only because i want to see anderson silva cry like tito ortiz when he realizes he isn’t invincible. plus, he has ducked fights. hendo and machida. he claimed he is too close of a friend to machida to fight him. he also claimed he needed a surgery that never happened to avoid hendo. he needs to man up and at least attempt to back up that cocky ass attitude.

by tri nguyen on Oct 1, 2009 3:15 AM EDT reply actions

Looking forward to this fight more than any other, dream fight in my opinion as these are 2 of my favourites and right now I can’t call a winner. Andy will have the advantage in the later rounds but you can never count out Vitor and he’ll be very dangerous in the first. Biggest MW fight since Andy-Hendo and the first real challenge for Silva in a long time.

by David W-S on Oct 1, 2009 7:38 AM EDT reply actions

I think Silva might loose this fight, not because he doesn’t have the skills but he’s done with 185lbs. He wants to fight bigger size opponents. He’s thinking about Mir and others not Vitor.

by 12/12 on Oct 1, 2009 8:47 AM EDT reply actions

This match up will depend on which Vitor Belfort shows up. If the one who has been devastating in his last three fights shows up I think Silva is going to be put to the test. I think Anderson is pound for pound the best fighter in the octagon right now but I think he and his supporters are getting a big head to go along with his amazing skills. I don’t care who you are there is always someone who has your number and maybe Vitor could be the man to take out Silva. Either way I think it will be a great fight.

by joker2469 on Oct 1, 2009 9:08 AM EDT reply actions

Silva will knock out Vitor for sure. Vitor gives up once people start to hiy him back. Silva will for sure beat him physically and mentally. Vitor has a punchers chance but dont count on it Silva will never ger knocked out. 11 fight win streak after this one sided beat down. LOL

by Cory B on Oct 1, 2009 9:18 AM EDT reply actions

Let’s say Belfort is as fast as Silva, he doesn’t have the size. Silva will be taller, have a big reach advantage, and superior movement. He will also have the mental edge. I know some say the old Belfort is back, but do we really know that. He’s yet to be really tested at 185. He got off extremely easy with Rich. I say Silva will eventually pick Belfort apart.

by brac on Oct 1, 2009 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

Silva by intimidation!!! Vitor is weak, I still think Rich took a dive last weekend. Has anyone ever seen Rich lose like that before???? He is a warrior thats fights till the bitter end, the punch that supposedly rocked him just grazed is forehead, then he goes down and turtles. Something fishy going on there……….IMO!!!!!

by Spyder on Oct 1, 2009 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

I find it interesting that the majority of earlier posts said how wonderful it would be to have Belfort back in the UFC and how it would be such a good match up. Well, here’s the fight many of you wanted and now it’s all ‘Silva by 1st round KO’.

Really? Do you guys honestly think it will be that easy for Silva to beat Belfort? At the very least I will be a good 3 rounds of action, unlike Silva vs FG/Leites/Cote (actually I think the Cote fight was good, he was going to lose but at least it was good until his knee gave out). We should get our money’s worth out of this one.

Either way, anyone against Silva is going to get the same kind of comments for total annihilation… there’s no thought in these discussions anymore, just the forgone conclusion that Silva is always going to win. He’s a phenomenal fighter, don’t get me wrong, but if sports history has taught us anything is that everyone loses at some point.

by JS on Oct 1, 2009 11:30 AM EDT reply actions

I got andy by tko in 2nd, tho upset is possible but not by ko, maybe a submission if anything
But even if belfort wins, he won’t hold on to the belt cus dan will rough him up again, maybe even nate

by phenomenal angel on Oct 1, 2009 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

If Silva beats vitor and hendo/marquardt then who next? he has already said he won’t fight machida, and i doubt anyone including shogun is going to take that belt anytime soon. so will silva be the guy to beat brock?

by spitforce on Oct 1, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

If Mir wins his next two fights as well we could see Mir and Silva go at it with Silva retiring with his last fight against a HW?

by Puck Head on Oct 1, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Much as I’d like to see Mir get his butt handed to him by a MW, that fight is just pointless. And Silva has virtually no chance against Lesnar. Lesnar has an 83 inch reach and will grab Silva and twist him into skinny little pretzels. I hate Lesnar, but let’s be real.

by shonuff on Oct 1, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

coming from a guy who vitor destroyed, lol.

by nathan on Oct 1, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions

Wanderlei sounds a bit too biased against Vitor. I thought they were cool cause they trained together at Extreme Couture? Anyway Belfort destroyed him over a decade ago so Silva has no room to talk about him although i would love to see them in a rematch. If belfort losses to Anderson then Dana can make it happen. I guess Wandy has his opinion but i doubt that the new Belfort would get destroyed by A. Silva he may lose by Sub or if he fatigues or maybe a decision but not get killed, he is not Forest Griffin or Rich Franklin lets be realistic. I actually think that at the moment Vitor has the best chance against Anderson Silva. As for Dan Henderson vs. Vitor Belfort I know that Hendo beat him a while ago in PRIDE but that was before Vitor started coming back, Vitor just iced Matt “the law” Lindland who is Dan’s friend and training partner, they have similar fighting styles (Although Dan has better Stand up) and in a rematch Belfort would do better I guarantee it. Henderson is mad cause Vitor is fighting Silva instead of him getting a title shot, well too bad Hendo; maybe he shoulden’t have been chocked out by Silva the way he did. I remember him saying he was gonna kick Silva’s ass before the fight but that clearly never happend. Either way Belfrot vs. Silva for the title is a sick fight at least on paper.

by G-Man on Oct 1, 2009 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

Okay first off Anderson Silva will win over Vitor Belfort, Vitor has fast hands but he will just get tired out after throwing so many hits and nothing connects, as far as Anderson he is a really good dodger and his hits land just about every time!

As far as Dan Henderson and Anderson Silva, Dan lost to him already and do you really think Anderson didn’t learn how to take out Dan? I’m sure Dan thinks he knows how to beat Anderson but the problem with that is Anderson will switch up his game and throw Dan off and Dan will lose again…

I really don’t want to see another Anderson vs Dan, I want to see Anderson fight new people and see if any of them have a chance to take out someone that is undefeated in the UFC…

by Json on Oct 2, 2009 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

if vitor moves forward and throws i think its an even match. if vitor stands or moves backwards he will be picked apart. his reach will be short unless he moves forward the whole fight.

by edward Peacore on Oct 5, 2009 1:54 AM EDT reply actions

After watching Vitor this last year I think everyone is underestimating him. The speed and power DO account for something and even tho Silva is the 2nd most evasive mma fighter, i pick Vitor to win the stand up. ( i know, make fun all you want) If silva wins this fight, it WILL be on the ground.

Just one poor boys thoughts.
