MMA Quick Quote: Jay Hieron wants the Strikeforce belt -- is Nick Diaz ready to step up?

"I really, really want my next fight to be for a title. I've worked my butt off and I feel I really deserve a title shot. That's why I signed with Strikeforce to get a title shot. I could have went straight to the UFC. They were offering the same money, but at the end of the day, I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a world champion and the quickest way to do that was Strikeforce. Like I said, I would like my next shot to be for the title; if not against Diaz, then against somebody else. I can't wait for this guy nor can I control what he does. It is what it is man. I just want my title shot and what I signed with these guys for. I don't want to keep fighting these non-title fights because that's not what I came here for. I fought my last fight and I proved myself and now we have to sit at the table and see what's going on. Hopefully Nick Diaz can get his shit together and we can get out there and mix it up. I think that's a great fight, not just for me and him, but for the fans too."

Former IFL standout Jay Hieron tells the gang over at FightHype.com that he's ready for the Strikeforce welterweight title -- which is the lone reason he signed with the San Jose-based promotion. Unfortunately his championship bout against Nick Diaz on August 15 was scrapped when Diaz failed to report for his mandatory pre-fight drug test the week before the "Carano vs. Cyborg" event and had to be replaced by Jesse Taylor. Hieron won a unanimous decision over "JT Money" and doesn't want any more shenanigans from Diaz. Strikeforce is shooting for a late 2009 title fight -- will Diaz step up, or step aside?

Heheh, Good one, JRE!

because at strikeforce your somebody, but you won’t beat diaz
if you got back into the ufc you would be an undercard in an ultimate fight night card
your just a gsp highlight

by Mikeybear on Sep 29, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s funny that people only care about a piece of leather strap instead of the actual title World Champ. If he truly wanted to be a world champ he would have gone to the UFC and tried dying. Instead he chose world champ of san jose. I still think he UD’s diaz though.

really, nnr?

i agree with what u said about him not wanting to fight ufc.

but c’mon~ nick will handle jay.. if diaz doesn’t finish him by the thrid i would be shocked!~

nick via 2nd round tko.

by stinky~fingers on Sep 29, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Nick can’t wrestle worth a sh!t. His high volume based boxing only overwhelms single shot hitters which Jay isn’t. Jay is much more athletic and more importantly faster than him with more power. May not be as technical a striker as KJ, but he won’t stand in front of him waiting to land one massive shot. Anyone with good defensive wrestling, good cardio and high speed combos is quick sand for diaz. Otherwise he could go with a gnp strategy which wouldn’t be hard so long as he can stop the subs. Riskier but no chance of getting worn out by Nick’s high workrate.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 29, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

fair enough.. good break down..

i still think diaz will out strike him.. nicks boxing is on another level..

i don’t think this fights going to the ground..

Picture of DREAM’s new cage (6 sided) Real cool looking all white cage, white fence. I like it:

by john G on Sep 29, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

It looks very cool from the top, but trust me, the white fence is MUCH harder to see through. The reflected light makes it much more difficult for your eyes to see whats happening on the other side. With black fence your brain automatically focuses the eyes beyond the fence to the light on the other side. If you’ve ever tried to take photos through a fence or screen you know what I’m talking about. It’ll be much harder for ringside fans and camera-men to see what’s going on in that cage.

so besically he he didtnt sign with the ufc becouse strikeforce was the easiest way to get a world title too bad that not a real world tittle thats pretty weak!!! he basically knows he will never get close to the gold in the ufc so he settles for strikeforce, thats like wanting to win a game of basketball but you play 10 year olds to make sure you win.

wow, Jesse not reporting something to laugh at…what a day, what a day!
I can’t believe no one has touched on that Heiron got the same offer from UFC, but “wanted to become a champ” so came to strikeforce… what does that say for strikeforce?

it was a little more geared towards intro… I was going to add the boxing fight this weekend (Klitchko), what a bore, and they had the mayweather fight before that, another bore! Can a boxing enthusiast explain to me why Areolla wasn’t allowed to finish that fight? He was getting dominated yes, but he was fine! fucking gay!

by kevin on Sep 29, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

lol, pw!~

for a corny joke, it had me laughing for a minute..

by stinky~fingers on Sep 29, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s two ethnic jokes in one day! Somebody get a Rampage thread up.

by PW on Sep 29, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Kevin, the world title comment made me laugh, pretty small time looking to win a belt in a lesser organisation especially one that doesn’t even exist yet. Saying that Diaz-Hieron would be a cracking fight, though Nick has to be the favourite as long as he trains right and doesn’t do any more stupid shit.

As for the boxing I actually enjoyed the Money fight, PBF looked superb and you wouldn’t think that he had had a long layoff and been wasting his time on WWE. As much as I dislike him he is clearly a draw and a world class fighter. Hopefully he fights the Pacman-Cotto winner, the Moseley thing at the end seemed like a publicity stunt and an excuse to put on a lesser fight.

Vitali didn’t even get televised over here, which shows how piss poor the HW division in boxing is, it’s easily the weakest division in both boxing and MMA at this point. Areolla shouldn’t have been in the same ring as Vitali, he’s a fatty who hasn’t beaten anyone decent. I didn’t see the fight but if you’re as far behind as Areolla and have taken a beating in the last round then there’s not that much point continuing, although quitting on the corner is the worst way to lose a fight. Either Klitschko-Haye would have been much better fights but the protracted negotiations and cancelled fights show the problems with boxing as both sides are being too greedy and now it looks like 2 big fights have been lost. Valuev-Haye will be just as bad as this last HW fight and there’s no way I’m paying to see it, when we get much better fights like PBF-JMM and Pacman-Cotto as well as all UFC cards for free over here.

by David W-S on Sep 29, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah it is a mmablog and the best one I might add, the who cares was more about the fight itself than the post. The fights are so bland over there.

by thetuf75 on Sep 29, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry Jay, the Strikeforce belt will never be considered a “world championship”.

by Pat on Sep 29, 2009 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

And Brock’s is? Just saying—I don’t think the belt means that much. It’s just scrap. Was Rashad really the best in the world when he beat Griffin? Hell no. The belt by itself holds no meaning, especially when you consider that there are legitimate contenders in each division outside of the UFC.

by frosnt on Sep 29, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

well the ufc does have the best fighters in the world so to be a ufc champion does mean sometthing… and yes when Rashad held the belt he was considered the best 205er in the world until machida proven otherwise! thats why there are title fights!!! and if you think the belt itself has no meaning then why are all these fighters fighting to get a title shot? and true there are legitimate contenders outside the ufc but do you really think anyone can take the titles away from BJ? from gsp? from anderson silva? from Machida? from brock? okay maybe brock but other than that hahaha… so yea the belts do mean something!! do you think Jake Sheilds who is an a TOP fighter in strikeforce.. even hang with ufc top 5 170s? there is a difference my friend and belts do mean something

by JR on Sep 29, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree JR!! frosnt… so you mean to say to be a the WCF lightweight champion is as good as being the UFC lightweight champion?? to be a champion in the ufc mean you are the best because that is where the best competes!! and yea some fighters fight just for money but there are guys like gsp anderson silva and machida who just really want to be the best… and guys like gegard masousi who wants to come into the ufc only to be ufc champion cause he knows to be ufc champ means you are the best cause thats where the best fight… in the ufc

by tapNOW on Sep 29, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

My point is that the title of UFC champion doesn’t really mean anything to me. A fight’s a fight and just because a certain fight has a title and a belt attached to it shouldn’t convince a reasonable person that the winner is the world’s best.

What I look at are the records of the fighters as well as their perfomances within those fights. BJ, GSP, AS, machida have proven they are the best in their division not because they wear a belt but because they have beaten many many quality opponents in dominant fashion. However, a champion like Rashad as I mentioned before was never #1 in my eyes because, even though he was the champion, his record and his performances were not as impressive to me as someone’s like Machida.

by frosnt on Sep 29, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

yea i see your point!! but thats why there are title fights.. kenny florian was on a tear and beat top of the chain lightweights.. until he ran into BJ and BJ killed him… and when anderson silva and machida first got in the ufc we they werent even top 10 in their divisions.. machida barely startd looking dominant after his win over thiago silva.. i mean he almost got tappd out by tito ortiz and so did anderson silva by a gassd travis lutter… but i can see the argument your making.. take carlos condit for example! champion in WEC he looked dominating in his title fights as WEC champ.. but as soon as he gets to the UFC split decision lost to Kampman and a split decision win over an unknown!! so to be a champion in the best orginization in the world that holds the best fighters has to mean something! and your right with rashad evans! thats why they say you have to successfully defend your title before your considered a true champion.. Machida hasnt defended his title yet so lets not call him dominate just because Joe Rogan said its the beginning of an era!

by JR on Sep 29, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Talking about champions from other organizations wasn’t my point at all. I never said that I thought other orgs belts to be equal to the UFC belt (though I do find them equally meaningless!). The fact that Condit held the WEC belt wasn’t meaningful to me or the people who ranked him in the lower top 10.

I don’t think I’ve said anything controversial or that you can even disagree with. The belts are only meaningful insofar as they tend to reflect the accomplishments of the fighters. I would almost always rank the UFC champ as #1 in their division, however if another fighter has displayed more merit (albeit without equal fanfare) I have no qualms about ranking him above the UFC champ. We have already implicitly acknowledged this by ranking Fedor ahead of Brock, because his accomplishments exceed Brock’s despite the fact that Brock is UFC champion. All I’m saying is being the UFC champion is not a hard and fast rule that says “you’re the best in the world.”

by frosnt on Sep 29, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

no nothing controversial… just good clean debate due to difference in opinions..

- with the whole Fedor/Brock thing your bringing up though… thats why it was such a big deal that Fedor gets in the UFC and why alot of fans got mad that he ended up signing with Strikeforce and not the UFC… because people want to consider him the best HW but its tricky to do so because alot of the best HW’s are in the UFC… thats why fans are so anxious to see a Fedor vs Brock fight!!

by JR on Sep 29, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, Brock’s is. Any other questions?

by RedDog on Sep 29, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

brocks is what? i already said with the exception to brocks title

by JR on Sep 29, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I would say being the UFC Lightweight Champion still doesn’t mean much, since most rankings have 5-8 of the top 10 lightweights fighting outside the UFC. Same was true for the Heavyweight division till PRIDE and AFFLICTION went belly-up.

by shonuff on Sep 29, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

No, JR, my comment was in reply to frosnt’s opening line about Brock.

by RedDog on Sep 29, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

at least he knows he dont have a shot in the ufc.

by Beast3000 on Sep 29, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Hieron has a chance in the UFC! but he would like to finish his route within strikeforce first imo.

by MMA040 on Sep 29, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t think he has the skill right now to be a UFC champion but believes his skills are good enough for the Strikeforce.

by Puck Head on Sep 29, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Or you could just take his very reasonable and easy to believe explanation at face value.

by Diceman on Sep 29, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Hieron says – “I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a world champion and the quickest way to do that was Strikeforce”. Seems like a coward to me. Why doesn’t he just join some shit promotion and win their title. He’s gonna fight Diaz for a made up title and that’s his dream? Give me a break.

by JoeJoe on Sep 29, 2009 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

What a joke… He gets a title shot for a made up belt after beating JT Money. Strikeforce sucks.

by JoeJoe on Sep 29, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

Wow. He’s basically saying he has no chance at a UFC title shot, so he’s picking the easier promotion to get a title in, just so he can have the title of world champion. I mean it’s true, but it shows that he doesn’t believe in himself enough to try and up his game to the next level.

by Scott on Sep 29, 2009 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

Hieron was in the UFC back in the day and since then, his skill has jumped leaps and bounds. He has crazy cardio and is a good wrestler. Also his standup is nothing to frown upon. I think if he jumped in the UFC , he would be in the same position as Condit/Kampman/Larson…when they joined the UFC. And that posistion is pretty much 3-4 fights to get to the title. In Strikeforce, it is 1-2 fights for Jay. After he takes home the belt, his stock will rise and he can enter the UFC as ‘former SF champion’..that will score him some main card bouts

by kevin on Sep 29, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Remakes are even worse than whatever it is called that the A-team movie is. They are really going to use the same story but just new actors? Why waste the time? Do people pay for this sort of thing?

by jay on Sep 29, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope Diaz steps up…all the way up to the UFC. As much as I hate that half-wit punk, GSP is in dire need of some fresh challengers.

“I could have went straight to the UFC. They were offering the same money, but at the end of the day, I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a world champion and the quickest way to do that was Strikeforce. "

An endorsement that Strikeforce is second rate if I ever saw one. Basically makes Strikeforce titles worthless. He might aswell said…
“I dont want to prove im the best by beating the best, I want to win a “world title” in one fight by beating a second rate guy who also cant cut it in UFC".

I wish Jake Shields and Mousasi would get out the minnows pond and leave these guys behind.

Turned down the ufc so he could win a title at strikeforce? That’s like turning down the NFL so you can go to an arena league team that has a shot at winning it all. That belt’s just a belt. The world champions are in the ufc buddy.
