Kimbo Slice training jits at ATT; willing to try light heavyweight

Props: MMA Fanhouse

Quoteworthy:

"I'm training at American Top Team. I'm a hard puncher trying to learn the ground game. You can do a lot, but you can't master anything in two years. In mixed martial arts, the more you roll the more you learn. It's something I'm working on. I'm a heavyweight, but if the promoters want me to come down, heck yeah I'd give it a try."

Former YouTube sensation and Ultimate Fighter (TUF) attraction Kimbo Slice heads to American Top Team (ATT) after completing a tenth season on the Spike TV reality show opposite former IFL champion, Roy Nelson, UFC veteran Wes Sims and several former NFL players, among others. Will the artist formerly known as Kevin Ferguson prove Dana White (who predicted he would never win a TUF show back in Oct. 2008 when he first made the bold offer) and all the other doubters wrong — or is he too green to hang with the big boys? Don't be surprised to see one last hurrah from Slice at the TUF 10 Finale -- and maybe even more if he wins on Dec. 5. Are you ready for more Kimbo in 2010?

No matter what happens tomorrow night, Kimbo will be in the Finale and in the UFC.

This season’s TUF is all focused on Kimbo, promoting and marketing him as a legit mma fighter among no real talents.

WAR Kimbo!

Kimbo is already on the finale. He said in an interview on Cagepotato that he is fighting on that card.

He’s a big dude though, I don’t know about dropping to 205, seems like that could hurt more than help. He must not have done that well in TUF if he wants to leave hw so badly.

by thetuf75 on Sep 29, 2009 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

hard puncher?

by NameNotRequired on Sep 29, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

For Kimbo to cut to 205 would require a level of discipline we have not yet seen from him.

by PW on Sep 29, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Have you seen this dudes body? Not an ounce of fat (no hom)WTF are you talking about stupid

by bomber on Sep 29, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

What do you mean by a level of dicipline we have not seen. Have you been in the Gym with him. Do you know his work out routine. I am not a big fan of Kimbo but all I have heard is this guy tries and works hard. I read on article where Bas as said he didnt train hard. Who knows what that was about. Maybe it was because Kimbo took his money and left for better trainers. We all know that Bas has a great training record. Look at all the champs he trained. LOL. I am not saying Bas was bitter either. I am saying we do not know the whole story behind that. Everyone else has said Kimbo works hard. Even Exreme Couture said this

by Lance on Sep 29, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

then you didn’t read the whole article lance, I linked it before, bas was making nothing off Kimbo and actually considered him a friend! I’ve met and talked to Bas, he’s a nice guy with a reputation of straight shooting or where I’m from telling the truth!

by kevin on Sep 29, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

This guy will gas like crazy if he decides to drop down to 205.
Just an assumption though…

by The Negation on Sep 29, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL NNR! I thought the same thing. Really???

by BOW on Sep 29, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo at 205 makes alot of sense. What makes more sense is Mirko going down to 205. Mirko can definately make 205. The guy is muscular, but he can definately cut the 15 to 20 pounds to make 205. So many match ups for Mirko at 205.

by Red on Sep 29, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

y u moron Mirko can barely fight anyone at this point in his career i just want Mirko to retire so i could remember him for being a dominant force instead of what he is turning into.

by zack on Sep 29, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

zack — Red is right. Mirko at 205 makes a ton of sense. His problem isn’t that “he can barely fight at this point.” It’s that he’s way out of his league fighting HW in the UFC. Most of them are too big and strong for him. Period. If he moves to LHW (and I think he could, with little trouble), then things start to get really interesting. But that assumes he has the will to fight, which is questionable at this juncture.

by MMACrossifre on Sep 29, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Mirko has no speed. He would get anihilated by the athletes that prevail at 205. People need to understand that the HW division is still BY FAR the weakest in terms of talent. Same goes for Kimbo. While I have serious doubt Kimbo will ever be a factor in any division, he stands a better chance of remaining employed as a HW. At present in the HW division, we have large athletic guys short on experience and technical skill, and smaller, not very athletic guys with decent experience and skills. At LHW, the top of the food chain all possess the entire package of skill, athleticism and talent.

by CL on Sep 29, 2009 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

couldn’t agree more. the lhw division is full of guys that punch faster than seth petrozelli.

by Conan the Barbarian on Sep 30, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Mirko has retired! why are we even talking about this?

Imo, if Kimbo can get down to 205 lbs, then the UFC should immediately book:

HOuston Alexander vs. Kimbo for the TUF finale or to co-main event at a UFN event

by john G on Sep 30, 2009 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Mirko’s heart is gone, doesn’t matter if he can make the weight. His spirit isn’t in mma anymore.

by thetuf75 on Sep 29, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

thetuf75, I agree CroCop has lost something, I’m not sure it’s so much heart as it is going against bigger guys that can push him around and potentially KO him, hence his lack of engagement in the cage. CroCop definitely looked really small in all his hvyweight fights,,, if he does fight again it only makes sense to drop to 205lbs and see if he does any better in that weight class… otherwise he should leave the UFC or get cut. Kimbo at 205lbs? he’s another small hvyweight it makes sense for him to try 205lbs.

by DAVE A on Sep 29, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Mirko’s heart and body may be gone but think about how many guys he’s fought during his career with skills to deal with his striking? Fedor, Overeem, Kongo and Dos Santos. If you look at all his other opponents then it becomes painfully obvious why he’s been so unsuccessful in the UFC. It’s not that the competition is so much higher, it’s simply that he wasn’t fighting guys who are helpless standing. There’s an excellent article on sherdog by breen that has lifted the Cro Cop HL reel veil from my eyes.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 29, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

NNR, good points… those heavyweight guys have some heavy hands, CroCop maybe able to beter deal with guys at least the same in size and he may even have more power. The only way to find out is to see if he makes the drop to 205lbs, otherwise he’s done in the UFC for sure.

by DAVE A on Sep 29, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Cro Cop’s legs alone weigh 205!

by The Negation on Sep 29, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo hasnt done anything in his career to impress me as a fan. Bret Rogers would have knocked his block off in Strikeforce. KIMBO SUCKS ENOUGH OF THIS ALREADY… He’s MORE FAMOUS THAN OUR MMA CHAMPIONS….PATHETIC

by bomber on Sep 29, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, seriously. Why be such a hater?

Kimbo isn’t out there making an a$$ of himself. He’s been humble, done a ton of interviews, and been a damn fine ambassador of the sport. Yes, he isn’t the most skilled, but he def gives the sport more exposure…and not for dissing sponsors or talking about nailing his wife.

sir choke~ i put up a few quotes from nelson regarding his fight with kimbo..

i guess mania is not interested in making a thread out of it..

it sounded to me like, he won.. he didn’t say anything, but his attitude seemed like he won..

by stinky~fingers on Sep 29, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

for anyone who cares, or missed it the other day, this is a couple quotes from roy nelson i put up a couple days ago..

cut and paste

talking about how the bout was made

"Rashad took us all in the back and said, ‘okay, who would you like to fight? Who do you think you match up good with?’ The whole nine yards. And then you just kind of picked who you wanted,"

"Me, I went in and was like, I want Zak (Jensen). They were like, ‘why do you want Zak?’ I was like, well, he got gogoplata’d by Brad Imes, so I want Zak. They were like, ‘you match better against Kimbo.’ I’m like no I don’t. I match really good with Zak, trust me."

"You just need somebody that will make Kimbo look better than what he is because he can’t lose to nobody else. That’s kind of how I picked it. From a business aspect, it just makes sense. That’s what I would do if I was running the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter, but as a fighter I wanted Zak."

talking about what he told the other fighters

"That’s not the easy fight,"

"There were like four guys on our team that was like, ‘oh I want Kimbo.’ I was like, have him," said Nelson. "I don’t want him. They’re looking at it as a meal ticket."

talking how him and kimbo could have headlined somewhere else

"Me and Kimbo, we talked about it, like how much money we would have potentially lost by fighting actually on the show," stated Nelson. "We could have headlined shows just by ourselves, so it’s actually kind of funny to go that route, but I’m glad that we did it. I think it’s probably going to be Spike’s number one show by far than even the premier."

"I think it’s going to be the fight of The Ultimate Fighter, and then it just gets better because after that you get to see the drama of what happens to me and Kimbo living in the same room together."

by stinky~fingers on Sep 29, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya ok and u know that how? All you cats act like u know what happens. get fucking real.

by corey on Sep 29, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I highly doubt he could cut to 205.

by mma guru on Sep 29, 2009 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

CroCop or Kimbo could definitely cut to 205lbs, it would just take a long time for the 1st cut if they do it with the right diet… they would lose some muscle at 1st and have willpower to do it.

by DAVE A on Sep 29, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

If he can cut the weight, he should. He looks really small compared to most of the guys on his team at TUF. The Heavyweight division has got too much serious talent over 250 lbs now for the “little” 220 pounders to stay competitive. They really need to cut the HW division in half somewhere around 235-240. Guys like Nog and CroCop should not have to compete with guys like Lesnar and Carwin now that there are guys that size with athleticism and skills. It’s like asking Kenny Florian to compete against Rampage and Forrest.

by Ronin on a River on Sep 29, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

Kenny takes Forrest.

by MXN on Sep 29, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would Kenny compete against an actor like Quinton Jackson?

by RyanHobbs on Sep 29, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not really the same because it’s not a big % difference and past a certain point size almost becomes a disadvantage, however I agree they should close the gap and make like 235+ super heavyweight.

by frosnt on Sep 29, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be a great fight Kimbo vs Houston.

by Jennifer on Sep 29, 2009 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

by DL92 on Sep 29, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo has superior boxing and would KO Houston in the first 2 minutes easily….but, who knows what would happen since they both have suspect chins

by Chadx23 on Sep 29, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I hated it when kimbo came to mma. I never in a million years gave him a chance. And I hated how so many people i knew who only somewhat followed the sport were loving the guy.

But after they announced he was doing tuf. Witch Im sure is a blow to his ego. Giving into a prick like dana white like that. I got a little respect for him. Then seeing some of his interviews. And how he fully admits he has alot of learning to do now. Rather than saying hell just knock people out back when he was in elitexc. I got alot more respect for him.

I kinda like the guy now. Especially after being on jimmy fallon last night. It was pretty funny ha.

I dont think the guy could cut to 205 either. He lookes to be pure muscle. Its not like it was when rashad was kinda flabby fighting at HW.

by terriblet1one on Sep 29, 2009 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

Dude all he has EVER said was that he was learning…even when he was in EXC, I think the thing you like is him giving in to Dana, you enjoy seeing this big black dude give in to Dana, and be humbled, him humbling himself wasnt enough for you…its amazing that all the people who HATEd Kimbo and everything he stood for now are “starting to like him” and “have respect for him” yet dude hasnt changed one bit. Smae interview style, same quotes in print about being new, just learning, you cacksuckers never read though…

by bomber on Sep 29, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

For you clowns who say you like him NOW….Dude all he has EVER said was that he was learning…even when he was in EXC, I think the thing you like is him giving in to Dana, you enjoy seeing this big black dude give in to Dana, and be humbled, him humbling himself wasnt enough for you…its amazing that all the people who HATEd Kimbo and everything he stood for now are “starting to like him” and “have respect for him” yet dude hasnt changed one bit. by bomber on Sep 29, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to agree…aside from the verbal assaults and calling people cassuckers….but Kimbo hasn’t changed, he has always been humble. All the interviews I watched since his start in mma he has never acted like he didn’t need training…people just see what they want to see and developed their own beliefs about him. The REAL difference is now he is trying to come up through the TUF and has dana’s approval. And once again, why go through tough when you can already be offered a huge contract by another org? He hasn’t done anything wrong. Everyone’s hatred for him was unwarranted.

by ffffff on Sep 29, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Bomber… Amen to that’’ I’ve always like Kimbo because I listened to what he had to say and his comments has always been from a point of being humble and thankful for the opportunity… it’s just that a lot of MMA purist had a closed mind… it’s ok to say Kimbo isn’t any good’’ but to personally dislike the guy because u think he doesn’t deserve any of this is silly. Kimbo obviously has an X Factor for the Avg know nothing fan… but so what? I liked watching his barbaque brawls’’ and look forward to seeing what he can do in MMA.. succeed or not… he’s being realistic about his chances… He’s AOK in my book.
