Herschel Walker: I can beat any TUF 10 heavyweight

Props: ESPN First Take
Quoteworthy:
"Who ever made [UFC President Dana White] the guy to measure athletic talent? I don't think (he) knows anything about athletic talent. He knows about fighters, which is different, but I will say this: He's running a show right now with heavyweights and I'll put dimes to donuts, all the heavyweights on his show right now I will beat. That's pretty easy to say. I always tell people put their money where their mouth is. Dana says I'm so old? Why doesn't he step into the ring with me?"
Recent Strikeforce acquisition and former NFL great Herschel Walker reacts to criticism from UFC President Dana White regarding the NFL great making a transition to mixed martial arts when he debuts for the San Jose-based promotion in January 2010. Walker, a Taekwondo black belt, maintains his athleticism will propel him to great heights -- and already puts him above any Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 heavyweight. Is the 47-year-old running back merely posturing? Or does Walker believe that all he needs is some decent chop-socky and a 40-yard dash to make it in the fight game? I guess we'll find out early next year. Anyone want to take a stab in the comments section on who his first opponent will be?

Give him the guy that just lost to Werdum, Mike Kyle, right? He’s about the same quality as the TUF guys, and he’d knock this old fool out…
Seriously? He called out Dana himself?

ya that’s definitely true the talent we’ve seen so far on TUF has been really bad. This show is turning into more and more of a joke.

Someone tell Herschel there’s no pads in the cage. He better make sure one of his fightin personalities come in the cage with him. He will get knocked out and forgotten within a year.

I hate when guys that are not in the UFC call out UFC fighters. It’s the easiest thing to do cause they know there is no way that the UFC would let the fight happen anyways so they get to look like tough guys. It’s like Shield calling out GSP and saying he wanted to fight the best to prove himself. When Shields was a free agent…where was his big mouth then?
by Buster Bluth on Sep 29, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A littl off topic but where have you guys been living under a rock? Jake Shields was never a free agent, he had a contract with Pro Elite and the contract was then sold to Strikeforce and lets be honest, the only “Interesting” fight for GSP at welterweight would be against Strikeforce talent. He has cleaned out the welterweight division in the UFC.
by markie on Sep 29, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If I’m not mistaken Shields signed a new contract with EliteXC right before they went under and that was almost right after he called out GSP. If I’m wrong, someone correct me but nevertheless…why call out a fighter that you have no chance to fight?
by Buster Bluth on Sep 29, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But its okay for every other fighter under UFC contract to call out Fedor?

markie-
You really missed the point on this one!
by OJR on Sep 29, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I get the point to Busters statement, and he makes a good argument. You should not call out someone from a promotion you can not end up fighting. Although Herschel was basicly called out by Dana and is just trying to defend himself, So really I don’t have a problem with that.
Jake should never have called out GSP while under contract to Pro Elite.
But the same goes for all these UFC Heavyweights that called out Fedor after the fact he had signed with Strikeforce. It’s a two way street it works both ways.
by markie on Sep 29, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The difference is that the UFC guys that call out Fedor actually want to fight him. Jake Shields called out GSP, just to make himself sound legit, but he knew all along he would get smashed.
by LJ on Sep 29, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry OJR-markie is right on this one. If Shields shouldn’t call out GSP, then Mir shouldn’t call out Fedor coincidentally right after Fedor signs with Strikeforce. It’s definitely the same thing. As far as what Herschel said about the TUF guys, I don’t think so. I would definitely pay a lot of money to watch him beat Dana’s ass though.
by Diceman on Sep 29, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Same goes for Walker. Dana’s been vocal about his feelings w/ Walker fighting, so he knows he doesn’t have a shot in the UFC, unless Dana decides to put him on TUF 14 at age 51.

How do you know the UFC fighters actually wanted to fight Fedor, but Shields didn’t really want to fight GSP? Since you guys have crystal ball’s hook me up with the Powerball numbers for tomorrow night.

Markie and dice most certainly are right. And I would love to see sheilds/GSP so whaaaaatever. Say what you’d like. You don’t kno if he isn’t confident enough to think he can hang with GSP.
Tell me penn was thinking what happened to him was gonna happen. Its a fighters mentality. Most truly believe in themselves. The ones that don’t, have troubles.

by MMACrossfire on Sep 29, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The UFC wasn’t always this restrictive. They use to allow quite of few of their fighters go out and fight against other promotions. That didn’t prevent them from making money or propel the competition to greater heights. The only thing that proved to us it that anyone can lose to anyone regardless of your primary org. Dana started this by running his mouth about H. Walker.
by delldog on Sep 29, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He didn’t call out UFC fighters. He called out Dana and the guys on TUF. While there might be some legitimate talent on this season, think of what performances we’ve seen in the first 2 weeks. Not too impressive. I’d bet Herschel would at least come into it in great shape and have a better showing than some of these first guys did.

He’s a 6th degree black belt. A Heisman trophy winner. Nearly qualified for the Olympics for a sprint relay. Was an Olympic bobsledder. For many years and possibly still to this day, the guys does 2,500 sit-ups and 1,500 push ups every morning. He’s a phenomenal athlete and a physical specimen. Does any of this make him a fighter? Nope but it does make you wonder how he would fair in a combat sport. Maybe he doesn’t do too well and certainly he’s got age against him but maybe he does make the transition easier. He’s not your everyday athlete by any means.

He’s right though. Dana doesn’t have the right to say anything about Hershel. Dana would get KTFO if he faced him in a cage. Also Hershel nailed it when he said this season of TUF has a bunch of brutal fighters on it. So far from the fights we have seen Kimbo is probably the favorite and that is sad.

A few comments need to be made here.
Jay, yes Dana does have the right to say that, most professional NFL scouts couldn’t play a down of football in the NFL if their life depended on it but that doesn’t mean they have no say in being able to see talent. The reason Dana shouldn’t say much is because we haven’t seen Walker yet but come on the safe money is on that he is not going to be that good. If I am wrong than good for him but it only makes sense.
Also that wrestler is a good wrestler Jay, and why use what is working. It is not his fault that the guy couldn’t defend the same thing over and over, I would have done the same thing, don’t fix something that aint broke. With that said, that wrestler needs to figure out something else to do besides lay n pray.
by Edgecrusher71 on Sep 29, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Scouts also don’t go around bashing guys that can’t play. They mark them off their list and move on. If Dana had an ounce of tact I would repect him much more. As it is he’s an egomaniac that spouts off at the mouth about stuff he doesn’t know about. There’s often no point to the crap that comes out of his mouth.
by Diceman on Sep 29, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Edgecrusher. I meant that Dana shouldn’t be spouting off about a guy he hasn’t seen fight. Herschel probably sucks but that really isn’t any of Dana’s business. I’m not a Dana basher(more of a ’hugger) but the guy needs to worry about the UFC and not some 47 year old dude trying to stay active in his old age. Diceman said it perfectly, there is no point to some of the things he goes off about. Case in point the Rampage debacle, Page would have still been fighting in March if Dana would just settle down a little bit. As far as that wrestler, we will have to agree to disagree. I personally thought he was boring and slow, he should have finished that bum he was fighting quick, if he were good himself.

Let me say this about Herschel; he was one of the most amazing athletes ever, not just football players- athletes. He was a decathlete and sprinter in college, I saw him almost beat The Carl Lewis in the 60 yd dash at an indoor meet in ‘82. He’s a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has been kickboxing. He’s more of an athlete than Brock Lesnar or most of the guys in the UFC. HOWEVER, he is 47 years old! 10 years ago I think he could have pulled this off. But not now!

Herschel Walker was one tough son of a bitch. Unfotunately he is way past his prime. I would imagine that he could probably kick Wes Shivers ass considering that Shivers couldn’t comb his hair without getting gassed. Maybe Strikeforce will match Walker up with Tank Abbott or Ken Shamrock. Stranger things have happened.
by Bruce Leroy on Sep 29, 2009 12:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Herschel is a black belt and has trained for years. I don’t think he’s ever faced anyone in a real MMA fight. His best chance would to fight Dana. Kimbo has beat real MMA guys like Tank (even though he was way past his prime). He should try out for the next season of TUF and let his actions do the talking. He’s pretty old to talking all that smack!
by smarta$$ on Sep 29, 2009 12:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I have to say that Dana is probably the biggest douche bag when it comes to people crossing over. He spoke so much shit about Kimbo and Kimbo is the highlight of TUF for this season, WTF?! He uses harsh words towards everyone and I agree with Herschel STFU and step in the ring… IF you are going to trash talk someone do it after they demonstrate their skills (or lack of). Dana needs a good ass whoopin’ from some ‘nobody’ like he likes to call them.
Dana and SPIKE or out of their minds when they think that this season of TUF is close to good. It pains me to watch the fights b/c everyone sucks. The guys Rashad trains with are horrible as well, the one guy in the first fight couldn’t even finish that big doof. I think Herschel would do better than most of them.

I read in a previous article that he was a 5th degree Black Belt in TKD. IF that’s true, it would mean he’s got better strking credentials that Machida and can definitely handle himself on the feet. As for his age, if Randy can still hang with the best guys in the world at that age, why not a world-class athlete like Walker! I’m very curious to see what this old-head can do. Nobody will be surprised if he gets his butt handed to him by another Seth Petrazelli, but I won’t be surprised either if he turns out to be a legitimate fighter.
by Ronin on a River on Sep 29, 2009 1:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
“better strking credentials that Machida”
Lol. Even if that were true, difference is Machida’s been practicing MMA for years and adapted his style specifically for MMA. The days of decorated strikers just turning up in MMA and achieving anything are long, long gone.
Randy’s still up there competing for sure, but he’s a freak occurrence. Look at the scores of former stars and champs who are younger than him who can’t hang anymore. There is zero chance of a 47 year old guy coming into the sport for the first time and ever achieving anything, ZERO CHANCE!

You are 100% wrong. There is one thing I PROMISE he will achieve, higher ratings on CBS for Strikeforce.
by JoePlumber on Sep 29, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m just sayin…Machida ain’t got 5th degree nuthin’. 5th degree CREEPY maybe. I’m not claiming Walker could beat Machida, just that on paper he has better credentials as a striker. (Just like Kos has better credentials than GSP as a wrestler.) And with his athleticism, it wouldn’t surprise me if he still had the cardio and strenght of a Randy Couture.
by Ronin on a River on Sep 29, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think I’d necessarily classify Walker as a better striker. Machida’s a black belt in shotokan karate. Also he trains with a black belt in TKD. His name is Anderson Silva. True, Walker was athletic back in the NFL, but how is he at 47? People keep forgetting the toll that playing football professionally has on your body. I hate to say it, but Walker was brought in as a publicity stunt to hopefully pull in a few viewers. Is he a good guy? Oh yes. Can he fight? That remains to be seen. For all we know, an athletic commission could deny him a license based off of previous injuries.
by n4 on Sep 29, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How does he have better striking credentials than Machida? Are you on crack? Seriously that is the craziest comment I’ve seen on this site bloody hell, he’s a 47 year old man with no experience in competetive martial arts, Machida is a master of his father’s own version of karate and has not only KO’d opponents but barely been hit by his opponents.
Laughable that a 47 year old former NFL player has been signed up by the second biggest MMA promotion in the US after no professional experience in the sport on the back of success in a martial art that has had no success in this sport. The fact that he challenged Dana White, a promoter not a competitor, shows to me that this clown is only here for the publicity and SF only signed him for the ratings. It’s one thing when you do that for someone on a reality show with some professional experience or a freak athlete with legitimate success in a martial art that is one of the most important parts of MMA but when you sign a 47 year old to make his professional debut it’s laughable. Almost as bad as Dream signing up Jose Canseco. Seeing how 2 of the 4 NFL players on TUF have struggled badly with the pace of MMA, I’m expecting the much older Walker to have the same problems only this time it will be on a legitimate card.
by David W-S on Sep 29, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dude, There are 12 year old’s with black belts in TKD. Belts have nothing to do with your striking level, especially in TKD. So he took some classes and said “HaIYAH!” and kicked the air a few times and did some forms. Doesn’t mean he can strike at all…
by Goob on Sep 29, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He is just doing this so he can get Dana’s attention. He wants to fight for the UFC and he knows he probably only has no more than 3 years that his body can take any kind of pain…
Who would be on Walker’s level anyway MMA-wise? How about Canseco vs Walker. Or Shaq vs. Walker. Anyone want to see this? I don’t.

Comparing the conditioning of a lineman to that of a running back is not wise.

Well if you want to compare it to other ridiculous things, here is a headline for you: Randy Couture signs with the CFL, says he is better then all players on NFL practice squads and wants to face Roger Goodell in Battle of the Network Stars

How about Couture signs with the CFL and Goodell starts cursing up a storm and talking all sorts of crap about Couture? That’s more like it.

He didn’t talk shit about Herschel, he was mainly talking shit about Strikeforce.

Well considering he was talking shit about Strikeforce signing the guy, it’s pretty fair to say that he was indirectly insulting him. And since when is it not an insult to suggest someone fight an opponent that’s in a wheelchair? The stuff he said was dogging Herschel out.

He doesn’t need to fight anybody with a name or a proven record. He doesn’t even need to win. All he needs is his name in the TV Guide. Most people have never heard of Mmamania, Sherdog, Bloodyelbow, or Fedor. They’ve heard of CBS and Hershel Walker though. And that’s all that Scott Coker needs to know. Dana is just drumming up free press for Strikeforce. They talk about Strikeforce at Strikeforce press conferences, they talk about Strikeforce at UFC press conferences. Not a bad deal for Strikeforce. And evertime the media covers it you know they’ll make sure to give you the date of the fight once it’s scheduled, that’s just good reporting and part of the story. Everytime Dana opens his stupid mouth I would bet he turns thousands on to Strikeforce that haven’t heard or followed it before. I can see people sitting on their computers saying “What’s he so mad about? Click on that Strikeforce link and let’s see what all the cursing is about.”

$100.00 says Dana wuses out and won’t fight Herschel…even after talking so much trash. But, what’s new?
by introvert on Sep 29, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dana’s going to say’ "This is a sport for f*ckin’ professionals. I’m getting the best MMA fighters in the world, why participate in a f*ckin’ freak show? “That’s stupid” I run a business that’s what I do’. “The only way Herschal’s ass is coming into the f*ckin’ UFC is if he wins TUF!!” Dana’s going to look for another big rating for next seasons TUF, maybe more NFL players and notable names.. etc, new TUF marketing strategy.

someone brought up a good point. i’m pretty sure slamming your head day in and day out(even with a helmet ) has to leave you with a pretty vunerable dome. how many concusions do you think these nfl guys have had in the past?
i think hershal needs to get a fight under his belt before he starts calling out guys.

He’s calling out Dana…how many warm-up fights do you think he would need? lmao

Walker should really be fighting with DMX in the Alabama show but I think he’s intoverted for even thinking Dana would waste his time with him lmao.
