FYI, the Morgan Freman commercials you have been hearing a lot of lately ISN’T Morgan Freeman. They hired a guy who sounds like him, look it up. Fun fact of the day.

Hey I think for once we might have a thread without anyone calling the interviewers or the person being interviewed a “DOUCHE”. The most over used word to criticize anyone the past year and a half. Also the lame variations such as “Douchey and Douche Baggery” How bout we put it to rest here and now?

Good point by Dana about this only being boxing’s second event of the year while the UFC has already put on like 10. Also, he could have said how Rich Franklin doesn’t have nearly the same drawing power especially in a non-title fight compared to some of the other big-name guys but he didn’t go there. Meanwhile, Mayweather is really boxings biggest and arguably, only superstar.

by RedDog on Sep 29, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

roy jones jr vs bernard hopkins rematch is a kind of big fight just for sentimental purposes so i guess they have 4 stars? and remember boxing may not be as big in the US but it’s huge in mexico, and europe still as mma is still a new thing to them..

by randy murders on Sep 29, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to pick sides as I would clearly pick mma’s but look @ it this way, we’re naming their ‘big 4’ in boxing, and saying that’s it. But perhaps that’s cause we don’t kno/watch very often. Which is our right. I couldn’t be bothered to watch any of the fights other than the blockbusters.

But if we asked the hardcore boxing fans, I know a few. And I’m swaying them to mma, but some of them can still only name 3 or fighters, and if they were ignorant would argue that’s all we have. Just saying the average boxing enthusiast would name, chuck who’s gone, tito, who’s just recently back, Brock cause of his wwe’ness’, maybe Anderson (cause of Roy Jones) and GSP, if you live in Canada.

by Daniel worby on Sep 29, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Correct Worby! I also know a hardcore boxing fan oldie[38 yrs of age I think] who doesn’t have a clue who Anderson Silva is.
I told him boxing is a dying sport[I love boxing, but admit that it’s on life support right now due to the likes of Pac and Money]and he should switch to where the action is at every month.
But the old man is more stubborn than an old donkey!
I just say that it’s his loss, not mine.

Bill Griffith trying to hate. haha. Some of these people just dont get it because they dont want to accept it.

However Dennis Kneale brings up an interesting point about market saturation. I know I didnt order the last PPV because I just had the fight night backed up by the previous 2 fights. I am a huge fan of the growth of the sport, but I have found myself tuning in less over the past 4-5 months. What do you guys think?

by Cut the BlueWire on Sep 29, 2009 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

i wouldn’t say i tune in less but it is hard to buy some of the ppv when there is 2 or 3 in a month and some don’t look as good as others.

The last one was the first one I haven’t bought in years and it was only because I had a lame ass 12 and 9 year olds birthday party to attend. First thing I did when I got home was watch Vitor (not Victor) kick Rich’s ass! I’ll always say (to some weaker cards) I’m not buying this one, and end up buying it anyways. I have nothing better to do on a sat night at 7 pm. but even if I do, I try to make excuses or buy it and DVR it!

by kevin on Sep 29, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah i end up buying them all, some arn’t always worth it. even if i get in late on a sat. i will order and watch the replay.some times i am dissappointed but not to often lately.

second of all I think, blue wire has a point I used to get pumped up for the unleashed shows but I havnt watch unleashed in a while

but i dont know if thats because of over exposure or because im watching most of the fights live now…. that and the internet has cut down my tv to maybe an hr a week all the fights are online now so maybe its not over exposure …..ya thats probably what it is

Bad luck that Kev, the one good thing with having PPVs at 3am is that I’d have to be having a damn good night out to miss the UFC and even if I do I can always tape it and watch it later hungover.

Dia mette that was some funny shit, 12 1/2 haha sad thing is kids actually count a 1/2 as an age. Have fun kissing your girlfried mate ;).

Good interview and some interesting points on the success of the UFC. I agree with Dana that they are nowhere near mainstream, over here there is no MMA news provided by the BBC or Sky on their sports news or websites and the only 2 newspapers that report on the sport are the Sun (which also reports on pro wrestling) and the Daily Telegraph, so there is clearly a lot to do to get the sport and the brand noticed. Whilst Mayweather had his fight plugged constantly by the BBC as well as Sky, who broadcast the fight on free TV, the only advertising the UFC had was on ESPN UK. The sport is still called cage fighting or ultimate fighting the few times it is reported and with goons like Alex Reid getting the headlines for shagging Jordan, it isn’t going to get taken seriously anytime soon. Until the UFC can become mainstream then their growth will be limited and major boxing PPVs like PBF-JMM will always do better, there is only so much promoting you can do with cable programming in the US or abroad and if the mainstream media don’t want to know it’s going to limit your fanbase.

I also like the points on oversaturating the market, certainly WWE fell for that trap as they have far too many PPVs that end up being substandard shows and it isn’t realistic for wrestling fans to pay for them all. Hopefully the UFC don’t get greedy either by putting on too many shows as during an economic recession there is only so much you can afford. Because Zuffa also own WEC and have the resources to sign up a lot more fighters if they want to, as well as all of the TUF series, they shouldn’t struggle to fill up more cards but the quality may struggle unless they bring in more weight classes e.g. CW, FW, BW as there are only so many times the champions can fight and with such dominant champions in each weight class, the other fighters in their division are a class below and won’t be as big draws. They do a great job at putting on free fights e.g. Kimbo-Nelson on TUF, the outstanding Diaz-Guillard Fight Night card, but at the same time they can’t get greedy and expect people to watch rubbish, if they put on weak international cards like 105 then less people will tune in on Spike and buy the tickets in the UK.

Boy, was there anybody at that table that actually took anything seriously beside Dana?

by ducknow on Sep 29, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

I like the interview. The one thing that Dana said that bothered me was how boxing died. He said they got greedy and stopped putting good fights on tv. The putmore good fights on tv than mma.. The problem is they do not put meaningful fights on tv. They UFC is starting to follow suit. The free fights once had a few big name fighters on tv with fights that meant something. The host even said it. He is starting to saturate the market. More useless and meaning less PPV every year. There use to be four or five meaningful fights on a UFC card. Now there is one or two. I have been watching this thing from the beginning so I can see the changes. In my opinion if there is not a title fight or a number one conteder fight on a card then it should not be a ppv..

by Lance on Sep 29, 2009 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

It’s hard to say man when you put on 30 events a year roughly? including the fight nights not every event is going to have the star power for the casual fans they put on 12-14 UFC numbered events usually a couple are free and the rest PPV wich have almost always had title fights are contender fights I really don’t see much to complain about infact I’m more than happy with the quality and quantity as far as boxing being dead thats false as there are still many of fans out there but I believe Boxing has lost a lot of future fans and current fans with the star fighter ridiculous salaries and lack luster performances combined with fights from the star boxers like mayweather now being forced on the fans when you throw down money for excitment(entertainment) boxing is losing customers every year.

by Puck Head on Sep 29, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Lance name one card in recent times where there has not been one fight of a contendership nature, trust me you will find it hard and that includes fight nights, last fight night gray maynard v huerta is 2 top guys in the 155 div. Last card we had Vitor who now has a title shot, Dos santos who has put himself in the mix. I believe you guys get the uk show free? thats got swick v hardy (not far off contention) randy v vera and some other respectful fights. What is it you want for free?? anderson v machida?!!

The ufc is pretty fair to the fans if you ask me, plus they put on events such as fans expo for the fans i dont see that in boxing world!!

by mo on Sep 29, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

I am not saying put Machida on.. What I said is he is doing the very same as what he said hurt boxing. Everything he said he does. I was at ufc 11. I been around this a long time. When You go from 8 ppvs a year to 16, It gets saturated and greedy just like he the commentator said. I saw in an interview were he said he wanted 16 ppv next year at least. Now I like mma as much as you are who ever. I do not know how long you been watching but I will say that the UFC could if they chose to cut down on the ppvs and have better quality ppvs. Boxing puts title fights on HBO and SHowtime all the time. Dana white gives nick diaz.. I did appreciate the GRAY maynard bout. Now look at your UFC 104 coming Up. 2 great fights with meaning and 3 that mean nothing. I will say I like watching Rumble johnson. He from my area. I dont know how long you have been watch but dont be nieve. The cards have less and less quality fighters and there are more and more ppv. The UFN have less and less talent than when they started. I been in the business world for a while. It is called suckering you in. He is doing exactly what he said he hated about the boxing ppv. The commentater called him out twice on it.

Not sure if this has been posted before or not…

http://mmapayout.com/2009/09/golden-boy-challenges-ufc-white/

Golden Boy Challenges UFC, White.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports posted an interesting piece this afternoon detailing the results of Mayweather-Marquez, in addition to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer’s challenge to the UFC in regards to their PPV figures:

Schaefer questioned the legitimacy of UFC pay-per-view results that were leaked. He said HBO is a publicly traded company that would face serious repercussions for releasing false numbers. The UFC, he noted, is a private company with no such concerns.

"I think the UFC and boxing should be able to co-exist and work together in this thing that we call (combat) sports," Schaefer said.

"I don’t want to talk (expletive) about the UFC. But Dana White can’t do an interview without knocking boxing. If he thinks we’re idiots and don’t know anything about the pay-per-view business, I’ll make him a challenge.

"I am willing to hire one of the top three accounting firms, at my expense, and do an audit of his pay-per-view results. They are nowhere near what is put into the public. There is talk that UFC 100 did 1.6 million, but it barely broke a million. I am willing to pay to have the audits done to prove this."

by RyanHobbs on Sep 29, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That is interesting but never going to happen. Iole likes to waste a lot of peoples time with make believe and improbable scenarios. UFC isn’t letting anyone know anything about there business, he knows this. Zuffa likes to ‘ahem’ “keep it in the family.”

The fight that will kill boxing… PAC MAN vs MAYWEATHER….. cause after that what is left…. ?

by Gil on Sep 30, 2009 1:29 AM EDT reply actions

Iv been watching the sport for many years also, but im excited by the growth and the amount of events. Not only are there more shows but there are more opportunities for fighters to come through, I agree that dana could maybe make a few of the 16ppv free for fans, but id rather see more events and up and coming fighters than have to wait for a stacked card once every 6 weeks.

Ufc is far from being what corrupted boxing and im pretty sure it will never get there either!! the ufc does a very good job, and ofcourse its looking to make a profit after all its a business…however the ufc consistently puts on more exciting cards than boxing and imo has a bigger draw and appeals to fans more.

Lets not forget that Rumble came up through the fight nights which are free when he was relatively unknown, its exciting to see these fighters come through, then when they impress (like rumble) we are happy to pay for them on main cards!!

wut dana said about boxing in the 60’s was they didnt put any big names on free tv…every free card the ufc puts on has well known names on there cards…i agree with dana 100% n i believe like sum1 said in about 5 years boxing will hav no one left…i watch both sports n can name alot of fighters in boxing but fact is they r all getting old…ufc will continue to grow while boxing slowly dies out…
