UFC Quick Quote: Shane Carwin is a tough wrestler with a 1-0 record

"[Shane Carwin's] a tough guy. He’s undefeated, but some of the guys he’s beaten aren’t worthy of having on your record. He hasn’t fought anybody. He’s fought (Gabriel) Gonzaga, so I really think he’s 1-0. He’s a tough guy and a wrestler. But he’s a Division II national champion — enough said. I don’t know what he is, 11-0, 10-0, but he’ll have a loss against Brock Lesnar."
UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar talks to the Las Vegas Sun about his pending showdown with undefeated number one contender Shane Carwin. Lesnar is unimpressed with Carwin's Division II wrestling title (Brock was Division I) and outside of Gabriel Gonzaga, thinks his record is padded with bums and tomato cans. Will "The Engineer" redesign the heavyweight division with a win at UFC 106 on Nov. 21? Or will Lesnar expose the grimacing goliath and send him to the back of the line? Opinions welcome.

Carwin is big, that is why everybody thinks he has a chance. But there is big then there is Brock. Carwin will weigh 260-265 in the octagon. Brock will weigh at least 300. Brock by brutal man smashing 2nd round.
by yoububg on Sep 28, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Did you mean to say 300? Brock won’t weigh 300 pounds, do you think he gains 35 pounds over night? Would that even be healthy?
by jay on Sep 28, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions
at least 300?
i think its more like 180ish~
by stinky~fingers on Sep 28, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions
Brock weighing 180 would be even less healthy than weighing 300.
by PW on Sep 28, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe 280-285, not 300. He’s weighed that for almost all his fights so far.
by slim473 on Sep 28, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Shane cuts from 290 to 256-260. That’s the weight he said he prefers to fight at coz he’s more fleet. He won’t gain the water weight back. Regardless Weigh is irrelevant here. No one is gonna wear down the other. Either both will gas in the later rounds or they won’t. Wrestling won’t matter either except for clinch work against the cage – we won’t see a Couture-Van Arsale type of wrestling bout. Someone is napping though and so far Carwin has more way more serious heat in his hands.

thats what im thinking NNR. i think size and wrestling might nullify each other here and carwin is a more dangerous puncher so far from what ive seen. i got carwin KO round 1 maybe 2.

Nearly every pick I make goes the other way, so I hope that will still happen here when I say Brock by TKO.

For those who think Barney is a better striker than Brock . . . who has Brock hit that hasn’t fallen down? Brock’s stand-up is hardly the most technically precise in the UFC, but it is undeniably effective and accurate.
by PW on Sep 28, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
There are a lot of things going on hear that will nullify each other. With that said the things each has on the other are just as important. Brock is much more explosive and athletic, he just is. I would agree that Shane has shown heavier hands (but let’s get real here, if either lands cleanly its goodnight for the other). I am just assuming (making an ass of you and me i know) but Shane is the smarter tactician of the two. So it is very interesting. Brock is probably going to be stronger as well as faster and bigger but Brock is like a linebacker with a lot of skill but doesn’t think to much and goes on instinct. Yeah he hasn’t been the wild guy who first fought Mir but I don’t see much strategy when he fights at a slowed pace either, rather just instinct and dominance. Shane is like that Linebacker who isn’t as athletic but has great field awareness and understands the other teams play calling tendencies. Again the last part is just my assumption on the fact Brock is a self proclaimed meat head while Shane has in the least a Master’s degree in Engineering.

Brock is not book smart but when it comes to competing at MMA the sport he loves Brock I believe is very smart like the linebacker Mac in the movie the program dumb as hell at school but at football he’s a genius. With only a hand few of fights under his belt his progression in the octagon is amazing and I think we will see a much better MMA fighter against Carwin. Carwin has one of the best MMA trainers as does Brock so I’m thinking this fight will come down to determination and physical ability wich I believe Brock has hands down but you can never count a man out that has the KO power of Carwin especially against a fighter that has been suspect in his stand up defence and offence like Brock but I’m sure Brock will be much improved in that aspect as it should be one of the main areas he is training on especially for this upcoming match on the ground Carwin might put up a fight but Brock will wear him down and end Carwins night. Can’t wait to see this fight with out a doubt the to best fighters over 250lbs!

Very hard fight to predict. Like Brock said, Carwin has really only been tested 1 time..so it doesnt give me much to work with when trying to predict the outcome of this fight!
I do expect this to be a striking match u p. Wrestling will be nullified. Its going to be a lot of striking and clinch game!
by john G on Sep 28, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah it’s hard to say but I think Brock will get Carwin down even though he won’t have the size advantage he has had he will show who the better wrestler is and have Carwin on the ground were he might not be able to man handle Carwin like he did Mir but he will wear him down and eventually have Carwin to fatigued to defend himself. If your right john I think we will be looking at new champion based on the fact Carwin has KO out every opponent he has struck with a clean shot and regardless how bad there skills were the effects of Carwin strike will be the same on any HW.

I don’t know about 300, but I do know (depending on how much water weight is cut) that it is possible to put on at least 25 pounds in 24 hours. Guy that owns the gym I go to did after his last photo shoot for Muscle and Fitness magazine. But it also weakened the hell out of him.
by chefdaddy on Sep 28, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

We’re on the same page chefdaddy. I don’t think Brock weighs 300 ever does he? That would be a miserable cut no matter how much time he had to do it.

I do not like Brock at all, but I can not believe people are actually doubting Brock’s wrestling pedigree. Most people wouldn’t doubt Fitch or Koscheck’s ability to take a fighter down who is a step below them in the wrestling game. Div I over and over Trumps Div. II wrestling. That is why you know the div. I schools and have never heard of a div II school unless you went to one or lived near one. Brock was 106-5 as a wrestler in College & 33-0 as a senior in HS. Does anyone realize how ridiculous that is? Wrestling like bjj is human chess. To say Brock is not tactful is selling him short. Yeah brute strength and power help, but he has been in cage with the big names already. Carwin just Gonzaga, who had him down and out. He got caught with the big punch. Maybe Carwin will land the big shot, but Lesnar has an equallly as powerful shot. The big shot is Carwins only chance. He will be outworked against the cage, in the clinch, on the takesdowns, and on the ground. I like Brock by Bruce Lee style stomp to the chest!

Note to all mmamania retards, size plays a big deal if the guy that has the size is the stronger individual.Brocks just hands down stronger than Carwin whether he had a 10 pound advantage or disadvantage. His physical strength is unanimous and whats ur taught how to use that strength in physical combat and u become a division national champion in wrestling.Unless u have a similar background pedigree to this guy,ur gonna have a big azz problem on ur hands.A big azz Brock problem.Bet dat.

Come fight night, Carwin will be about 270-272, Brock will be at about 280. I think Brock is a little nervous about this one. Does Carwin have what it takes? I don’t know, but I hope they stay standing long enough to truely see what kind of chin Brock has.
If it stays upright, I’ll take Carwin. If it goes to the ground, I think brock will be able to control from the top a la Herring fight.
by Cole on Sep 28, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions
OK obviously 300 is absurd but even 280 seems amazing to me. How in the hell is it possible to gain 15-20 pounds overnight?
How much “water weight” do fighters normally lose and how much of cutting weight is just diet and exercise? I wonder because you hear about ppl like Alves who supposedly walk around at like 200 and fight at welterweight and I’m about 200 myself and it seems utterly impossible for me to get down to 170.

by yoububg on Sep 28, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions
yoububg, why is that hard to believe? frosnt, it all depends on the fighter, a lot of guys like to start the cut 2 months before a fight so they don’t have to suffer for the last week. Some guys have no problems with cutting 25 pounds in a week leading up to the fight. Everyone is different.
by jay on Sep 28, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m not a Lesnar fan, but I completely agree with his assessment of Carwin’s record. Carwin is an exciting prospect, but he was in my opinion rushed into this title shot one fight too soon. Carwin would have greatly benefitted by co-headlining as origonally planned vs Cain, to gain needed experience in a high profile fight. Lesnar has shown surprising savvy and poise so far, and his experience already headlining PPV’s will be an enormous advantage in this fight.
by CL on Sep 28, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
No one is mentioning the fact that Carwin has a full time job and isn’t totally wrapped in MMA. How can he train as well as Brock with a job also. What number one contender for a belt has had a full time job too? I don’t think his conditioning will match Brock because there’s no way he trains as hard as Brock so I think Lesnar by TKO near end of 4th round due to Carwin exhaustion.
by getrawbc on Sep 28, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions
He signed a title fight against Brock Lesnar. You don’t think he got at least a leave of absence for his training camp? Even if he doesn’t have the money now, he’ll get it from the fight and from sponsorships. I guarantee he’s training full time for this one. And if the Carwin we saw in the past trained only part time, its kinda scary to think what a fully trained Carwin will do.
by --utaptout-- on Sep 28, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Occasional full time training camps vs donig nothing but training day and night like Brock has been doing the last 2 years. You can’t make up that kind of endurance and cardio in a 3 month camp. Brock willcwin the cardio aspect of this fight hands down…

Fear not, Jay, I am smarter than most. And yes, Brock is not the same type of fighter whose wagons I typically jump on. My reasoning is this: I have been following Brock since his WWE days. You just don’t see guys with that combination of size, power, speed, agility and athleticism. I can understand why some people don’t care for his personality or think he didn’t deserve his title shot. But he has mopped the floor with some very talented fighters, guys who are a hell of a lot better and more accomplshed than Barney. Brock is a one-of-a-kind athlete, and if people put their blind hatred aside and just watch him perform, they can’t help but be impressed by what he can do. And he’s only scratched the surface so far.

PW. I haven’t seen a wrastlin’ match since The Rock quit. I was a massive fan as a child, than the love was rekindled by Rock and Stone Cold. The guy is a beast and I love watching him fight.

WWE has really gone downhill since the days of Rock and Stone Cold. They have John Cena trying to fill the old Stone Cold role of the blue-collar bad guy that everyone loves, but he just can’t carry Austin’s water. The guy is terrible. He’s been wrestling for 6 or 7 years and still only has about 4 moves and no mic skills. I grew up on the legendary Von Erich-Freebird feud here in Dallas.

I used to be a big wrestling fan but have pretty much stopped watching since it’s become a kids show. I was always a fan of Stone Cold and also liked other charismatic wrestlers like The Undertaker, The Rock, Mick Foley, Chris Jericho, Edge and Christian, even lesser names like Road Dogg and the Godfather were entertaining. I also appreciated the more realistic wrestlers like Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Kurt Angle (before he became a drug addict and stalker), Chris Benoit (before he was a murderer) and Eddie Guerrero. Nowadays the whole show is built around a chav pretending to be in the US army because that was his role in an awful film, 2 old men pointing at their dicks, a roided up chairman in his 60s pulling his pants down and having grown men kiss his arse and a leprachan. Needless to say wrestling is unwatchable these days and I’ve grown out of it, now I’m into real fighting in particular MMA and boxing.
As for the World of Sport era of British wrestling the less said the better. Some of the guys were talented but when the whole show is built around to fat old men running into each other for 10 minutes it becomes unwatchable. No wonder the only people who went were a bunch of old ladies. I still cringe when anyone mentions Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks.

Carwin has a punchers chance and that’s it imo. I would say Brock is bigger, stronger, better wrestler, and more intense. As long as Brock doesn’t get caught on the button with a big bomb, then I think he takes Carwin down and abuses him. Carwin might last longer than Mir, but Brock won’t have to be so worried about submissions when he’s on top of Carwin.

I was surprised at the uproar after UFC 100. I was watching the event with some friends, and a couple of us were laughing really hard when Brock went off on his post-fight antics. It was really funny. I have it recorded, and I’ve laughed every time I’ve watched it. The only “mistake” may have been dissing Bud Light, but then again they received a little boost in exposure in a flip-the-script kind of way. Brock was just very funny that night. Starting with yelling, “Who is the f-ing man?!” as he got up after the ref waved him off.
Carwin seems like a nice guy, but he’s characterizing things along good vs. evil lines, which is a little silly. The UFC will play this angle up, because it’s a great way to sell PPVs, and more power to them.

Jesse, Carwin said all of those things to get this fight and it worked, now instead of having a tough fight against Cain he has a title fight on a PPV that will sell over a million guaranteed as it has the 2 biggest draws in MMA history Brock and Tito. Well played by Carwin, whether he believes what he says or not, he got what he wanted and from this one fight is going to be a very rich bloke and possibly the HW champion. Not bad for a part-time fighter with one good win.

Who knows what his true motives are for bashing Brock, envy, hype or to squeeze his way into a title fight after fighting only one legit opponent, who knows? But you have to admit it was fortuitous for him to suddenly have beef with a guy he never mentioned before seeing the numbers Brock pulls in on PPVs. I thought he was a nice guy before all this stuff. And some people get angry at Brock for his WWE antics, calling out someone for no reason to create fake hype ala Rampage and Rashad smells like WWE to me.

There weren’t any clear contenders, anyway. It makes sense to put Carwin up against Brock at this juncture. Beating Gonzaga was an important win for him. It’s like Thiago Silva’s recent win over Keith Jardine. It’s one of those pivotal wins that moves a guy up into the upper ranks for real. As “stacked” as the UFC heavyweight division is, there are very few contenders at this moment. Carwin has some momentum coming off his Gonzaga win (more than Cain’s win over Kongo, even though that was a great win), and his complaints about Lesnar iced the cake, I think. It’s a great match. It’s a great test for Lesnar, too. Now we get to see what Lesnar can do against a guy who is just as big as he is. I predict Carwin will be taken down and kept down with relative ease, but Lesnar really does need to worry about getting knocked out. Carwin may be strong, but he’ll be pushed hard for up to five rounds. I very seriously doubt he’ll have as big of a gas tank as Lesnar.
Lesnar by war of attrition.

brock isnt talking shit hes just stating the facts, carwin hasnt faced anyone. brock will be much to strong and athletic for carwin imo! brock by camel clutch…lol

Wow..ironic…..i was looking up Carwins past opponents(before UFC) on sherdog lastnight and I think all of them had losing records and had only 2-3 fights. One guy had 12 wins, but then 14 losses …and Sherman Prendergast was on his list of wins too..and i know he has a losing record too and is washed up.
My point is , for once in my life I back up what Brock is saying. Carwin has fought nothing but trash and that is how he has this record. I know Brock has only fought five times or so , but look who he has faced. Mur twice, Randy, and Heath…3 very talented legends of the sport. Carwin fighting guys with 1-3 records or 10-17 records.

I love this match-up. I give Brock an the advantage in the wrestling dept, but Carwin has separated more guys from their senses. His punches are vicious. I think Lesnar will when using his superior wrestling to keep it on the ground. Lesnar is a huge favorite on the betting lines, far more than he should be.

Carwin has a puncher’s chance, he hits real hard. However, if Brock can take his shots or simply avoid them Carwin is screwed. Brock is right about one thing Gonzaga is the only name Carwin has beat.

Well Said Brock put that over rated can in a BODY BAG!!!!!!!
by zack on Sep 28, 2009 12:30 PM EDT reply actions
I think the main thing that everyone has overlooked with Brock is actually his skill. Everyone cares so much about his size and they end up preparing more for that than his speed and skill level. Bob Sapp is much bigger than Brock but has never been a big success because hes just a brawler. This does not mean that Brocks size and strength dont play a part but there is much more to the story than that. If Shane concentrates on stuffing Brocks takedown and keeps his gorilla reach in mind he will have a much better chance at stopping Brock in my opinion. There are lots of strong guys in the world but only some know how to apply it and maximize the in ring potential of their strength. Carwin may be the same size as Lesnar and maybe even as strong in the wieght room but even in his matches against those cans he doesnt manhandle them like Brock.
by k30 on Sep 28, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions
Exactly k30 look how Lashley man handled Sapp even though Sapp is around 100LBS more Lashley out muscled him on the ground and stand up with superior wrestling and aggression. hong Man is another big dude with no endurance and little skill & athleticism Carwin and brock would both out power both those big men with ease. Between Brock and Carwin it’s going to come down to who’s prepared for who more and if thats a stale mate it’s going to come down to determination were I believe brock wins but Carwin is probally the most powerful striker how accurate he really is is hard to say due to his competition beside gonzo not having much skill to counter with but if he connects against Brock or anyone for that matter it’s lights out wich is really what makes him a scary opponent against anyone.

Carwin ranked 9th
Brock not in top 25 yet
Sure carwin only has 1600 strength of schedule but he’s in the top 25 at least. Brock has an 1820 strength of schedule but only 5 fights, a 1-1 vs Mir, then Couture and Herring, and a Korean who is 4-6.
by quidnunc on Sep 28, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions
How can the UFC HW champion, with wins over Herring, Couture and Mir, possibly be out of the top 25? That is ridiculous. Who do you have ranked above him other than 10-0 over cans 1-0 over a legitimate albeit inconsistent opponent Carwin and the obvious (Fedor)? Honestly that is one of the daftest things I’ve ever read on this blog, would you have had BJ Penn outside of the top 25 after he lost to Pulver? Because he had the same record as Brock at that point and wasn’t a champion.
by David W-S on Sep 28, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know if you seen any of brocks fights but his game is proof enough that he can face any HW fighter in the world and have a great chance at winning my friend. Lindland might have three times as many fights as Anderson Silva but it’s pretty obvious Silva is the better fighter in due time you will realize why Brock is the champion and rated on every MMA board as the #2 HW in the world. Records are deceiving as there are many fighters with great records but only a hand full that could compete against the top UFC fighters in any division.

CARWIN HAS A PUNCHERS CHANCE. CARWIN IS NOT AS BIG AS BROCK, NOR DOES HE HAVE HIS STRENGHTH AND WRESTLING SKILL. IF THE FIGHT GOES TO THE GROUND, BROCK WILL FINISH HIM WITH HAMMER FISTS.

Carrwin hasn’t got out of the first rd.
I’m curious to see his stamina
If it goes past 2nd ima say brock takes it
Carwin can catch him, but we never know maybe brock has a grat chin

I agree with the guy who typed in all caps. The only thing Carwin has going for him into this fight is a puncher’s chance. We saw Mir rock Brock for just a bit and for sure Carwin is stronger than Mir. But Brock has a tank of a head. I see Brock going for the takedown more than anything and pounding his lights out from there.
by littlearms on Sep 28, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions
All I can say that if Brock wins and there is a God a large piece of metal from the ceiling will fall and crush him. Truely I have to ask has anyone else noticed the resemblance of Brock to a Mountain Gorilla? Side Profile looks really close. Just saying. Shane Carwin I hope you win bro.

Hmmm, am I the only one who thinks Brocks only advantage over all his opponents past & present is his physical advantage??
Brock himself has said he wasn’t the most technical wrestler when he competed in amateur wrestling.
I agree he’s a beast but this is the first time we’re gonna see him with someone he might not be able to just bulldoze his way through.
Actually, I’m trying to reserve judgement on Brock until I see how he handles Carwin. Just seems to me there’s a lot of people on the Lesnar band-wagon at the moment but, for me, he hasn’t lit up the UFC yet and is it me, or is his Ground & Pound a bit crude?? A lot o’ force but not much in the way of artistry I think.
by 8lackfoot on Sep 28, 2009 6:50 PM EDT reply actions
Artistry? GNP is the least artistic of any technique in mma regardless who is performing. His takedowns and control of his opponent on the ground is excellent. And yeah, the guy can bang to, ok so his technique sometimes isn’t stellar but he has only been training in striking for 3 years. By the way, he has accomplished a hell of a lot in those 3 years. NO ONE can argue that!!!!!!!!!!
by Wes on Sep 28, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Before his first fight Ive been saying Brock will do well in MMA I didn’t think this soon he would be the champ but it doesn’t shock me. I never heard Brock say he wasn’t the most technical wresler but I know he was the same size as a lot his opponents when he did wrestle yes he was a freak of an athlete but his real strength was his relentlessness & determination and the endurance to go along with it. Yes Carwin might be able to put on a struggle but he will fatigue to were Brock will take over much like GSP does to the other great wrestlers in his weight class.
by Puck Head on Sep 28, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Did you even watch the 2nd Mir fight? He took one of the best BJJ heavyweights in the world and held him in a position where he couldn’t use his jits to defend himself, let alone mount an offence. You don’t nullify high level bjj with size alone, technique and positioning were major factors. And why do people say that Carwin must be a better strategist? What evidence in ANY of his fights gives people this impression? I get the whole “engineer vs meathead” thing, but engineer job notwithstanding, where has he ever had ANY obvious strategy other than stand up and bang ’til someone falls down?
by MyQuit on Sep 28, 2009 10:54 PM EDT reply actions
I agree with Lesnar’s assessment of Carwin. How many times have we seen guys come into the UFC with several wins and either no losses or only a couple? Guys pad their records by fighting cans or just much lesser comp. Gonzaga was a serious opponent who I think Carwin was lucky to get by. If he doesn’t land that punch, I don’t know if he wins that fight. Lesnar is quicker and I think the better athlete. I don’t think Carwin moves that well on his feet. I hope he gives Brock a good scrap. We’ll see what he’s made of. But don’t be surprised if Lesnar abuses him.

Toss all the D2 vs D1 garbage aside… Im not at the level of either of these men, but ive wrestled (211lbs & 255lbs) long enough to know that some 3A/163 pounders will always beat some 4A/211+ pounders, some top D2 guys will crush D1 guys and vice versa. Hell, im a bit of a genetic freak myself… but ive lost practice matches to much smaller wrestlers & grapplers alike. I agree with Carwin (as any true wrestler would) when he said basically the same thing during an interview. The fact is – Lesnar is a fantastic athlete, but a poor representative of anything but fornication & douchebaggery. I believe that hes a stud in his own right, thats for damned sure! …hes been at the top of the heap in almost everything hes done now, and that doesnt happen by accident. So, my hat goes off to him for his athletic prowess – but I think he (brock) is going to lose. In the words of Rampage jackson… I dont think BL can “bust a grape”. Hes put his biggest hits on smaller (albeit TOUGH) guys, and has yet to actually KO anyone. He hamburgers peoples faces though. Hes never submitted anyone either. Then you look at Carwin… his longest fight (in 11) lasted 2:11 into the first round. A majority have only made it to under a minute in the first round!! with 6 knockouts & 5 subs (no decisions)… I think the law of averages would conclude that SC finishes fights with BRUTAL power, routinely!! He knocked Gonzaga out with a jab while walking backwards!! Hes had his chin tested, yet composes himself and finds a win every time. And if size is really an arguement here, listen to what SC says about his size on fight-night to counter Lesnar’s size advantage in the Octagon. "I should be about 290 fight night." Who xan really say though? …right?! I mean, claiming to know for sure what the outcome will be (based on appearances) is foolish at best. Just ask GSP about Serra! LoL In the fight-game, and wrestling alike… anything can, and usually does happen. All we can say is that one man will leave the ring with a W on their record & the other, an L. My money & hopes are on Carwin! In my opinion hes a better rep for the sport, and the more desercing of the two. WAR Carwin!!!
