TUF 10 Finale: Jon Jones ready to take Matt Hamill down on Dec. 5

Bones-plex

Props: FightHype

Quoteworthy:

"[Matt Hamill's] going to be a big step up in competition for me and a really good test for me and I'm stoked about it. I think his wrestling will play a factor in the fight. I usually fight guys who are Brazilian Black Belts or guys who consider themselves strikers, but with Matt being a tough wrestler, I can see that being an issue. But Matt isn't really known for his submissions or having knockout power in his hands, so I'm just going to train every aspect of mixed martial arts and I'm excited about this fight because he's not known for his Jiu-Jitsu and my Jiu-Jitsu is getting really good. If he ends up taking me down, I'm straight with working off of my back or getting into some scramble with him and possibly submitting him. In the boxing category, I feel like I'm faster than him and more well-rounded than him. In the kicking department, I'm working with Phil there and now I'm working into being a Muay Thai fighter, so I'm just going to go out there and mix it up in every aspect. I actually had a very good wrestling career also and I try not to doubt myself in any aspect of the sport. Doubt is where a weakness is about to come in, so I'm just ready to mix it up man. I'm ready to take him down, I'm ready to defend his takedowns and I'm just confident man. I haven't lost and I'm always working to get better, so I have no reason to doubt myself. I just want to be an all-around great fighter."

– Electrifying light heavyweight prospect Jon Jones looks to continue his meteoric rise through the ranks of light heavyweight when he takes on staunch UFC veteran Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5 in Las Vegas. Jones dismantled Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94 earlier this year and followed it up with a submission win over Jake O'Brien at UFC 100 in July. The national Junior College Champion out of Iowa Central Community College quit school to pursue a career in mixed martial arts and has yet to be defeated in nine fights. Will he drop "The Hammer" on Matt Hamill? Or will the former TUF 3 standout bury "Bones" and his title aspirations?

i like jones but i think matt will ko him eventually,

Just don’t see any way Hamill could compete with Jones on the feet. Jones is much more well rounded and should take this one fairly easily.

by Cole on Sep 28, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

bone jones UD.
i would like to see bones jones beat matt and then end up fighting at least thiago silva, evans, ortiz or griffin

by Mikeybear on Sep 28, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Jones by whatever he wants. Hammill won’t stand a chance.

by RoBerto on Sep 28, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t believe Bones can take Hammill down, however if Hammill times his shot right, he may be able to take Bones down. IMO Poor game plan of Bones working for a submission off his back while Hammill is raining down hammer fists. If takendown, Bones should scramble and attempt to get back to his feet where he has the skill advantage. Bones by UD.

oops correct spelling ‘Hamill’ but who GIVES A SH*T.

by DAVE A on Sep 28, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

don’t forget who bones jones is training with… this kid is only getting better! the holes he has in his game is getting filled by BJJ , JJ , Cardio.. he can’t lose!

by Mikeybear on Sep 28, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Jones is going to DESTROY Hammil! Jones will be much too fast and explosive. Everytime Hammill throws a jab, he leaves it extended to long, and he leads forward with hiis chin sticking out…JOnes will use his speed to make Hammil pay for every Jab that he throws.

This should be a good fight, but Hammil isnt good enough to get past Jones’s speed!

by john G on Sep 28, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Hamill = worst standup in UFC. I was booing and literally threw up watching him exchange with Reese Andy. Jones is the future. He’ll sub him to prove a point.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 28, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Hammill = LHW version of Cabana Boy Gurgel. He tries for exciting stand-up fights even though everyone knows his best, and possibly only, chance to win is on the mat.

by PW on Sep 28, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s why he ko munoz, put a beating on tim bosch and outstruck bisping

by phenomenal angel on Sep 28, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Munoz is a 1-dimensional wrestler, Boetsch took the fight at altitude on short notice, and Bisping won. Care to try again?

by PW on Sep 28, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Bisping lost.

by frosnt on Sep 28, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Say what you want, but only three opinions on that subject matter, and two of them said Bisping won.

by PW on Sep 28, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Who is the three people?

by jay on Sep 28, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

The judges, two of whom awarded the fight to Bisping, so to cite this fight as an example of Hammill’s striking prowess, when he was actually out-pointed and out-pitterpatted, is a failure.

by PW on Sep 28, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

NNR, If Bones does get takendown he should spend no more than 2 mins the entire fight trying to sub from his back, otherwise spend the rest for an escape and KO Hamill! I hope Bones doesn’t sub his way to a lay n’ pray losing decision, he can better make his point when that BJ gameplan is warrented.

by DAVE A on Sep 28, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

PW since when are the judges right? You guys are right though Matt’s stand up is probably the worst in combat sports. Hockey fights and basketball slugfests and mound charges included.

by jay on Sep 28, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

ko hamill? i’m a big jon jones fan but you can tell he’s not a power puncher. i think bones will get the sub but i hope he proves me wrong and shows he has some ko power

by Jared on Sep 28, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Well some people have that natural power and some just need that technical and strenght/conditioning adjustment to make it work. Look at Anderson Silva who for years couldn’t bust a grape despite his brilliance and now suddenly he’s shutting down everyone.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 28, 2009 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

NNR, I wouldn’t say that exactly… Silva was TKO’ing fighters by ref stopage in the begining of his career.. if the ref didn’t stop it Silva would have had plenty of KO’s early on. However, I get yr point and agree that Bones standup will gain power with time n’ practice. Bones at 22yrs old is only 1/2 the fighter he’s going to be when hes 30th.

by DAVE A on Sep 29, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I can agree with you to a point about the referees. Still though i don’t know if i am simply being critical of the old silva but -for example one of the most vivid things about his fight with Chonan wasn’t only the flying scissor heel hook per, say but instead how he was accumulating shot after shot after shot at will yet the piranha wouldn’t go down. I bet one clean hit now puts him down for sure. Yet now even Hendo who hasn’t been even rocked since allan goes shattered his knee putting it through his chin was all dazed and silly after silva put a little combo on him.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 29, 2009 8:22 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree hammil has a rock chin, very heavy handed, and way too strong for jj

by dtoto on Sep 28, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt should take this fight

by thebending on Sep 28, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Im seeing it the opposite way. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bones’ skills had surpassed Hamill’s and I think it’s safe to say jones is naturally the better athlete. 2nd round TKO for Bones or a dominant decision

by FightFan51 on Sep 28, 2009 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

Thanks for the props Mania.

by Hype on Sep 28, 2009 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know if Jon Jones hits hard enough to knock out Hamil. I’d love for Jones to be the next coming of ____ but this may be a bad matchup for him. For a guy that fatigues in later rounds and can’t finish, Hamil can wear him out with his wrestling. I think it will be a close decision either way.

by kibbled_bits on Sep 28, 2009 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

good call on the getting worn in later rounds. I think it is less to do with cardio and more to do with his lack of being able to pace himself. Though there are some guys who can just go forever but they are the exception and no the rule lol.

by Edgecrusher71 on Sep 28, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Hammill hasn’t actually used his wrestling in any recent matches. He fancies himself a striker for whatever reason, and someone with as diverse a striking game as Jones is probably going to give Hammill fits.

by PW on Sep 28, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

If Jones is smart, he’ll take a cue from Franklin and slip in lots of hard leg/body kicks. Defending kicks seemed to be a huge hole in Hamill’s game.

by just some dong on Sep 28, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree the jj couldnt even finish stephen bonnar, even something a 50 yr old mark coleman had no trouble doing

by dtoto on Sep 28, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Coleman just hugged Bonnar to the ground the entire 3 rounds. Didn’t even try doing anything else. Jones was less experienced at that time.

by Crackbaby on Sep 28, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

it really doesnt matter how jj develops, machida has the belt, and he is on a completely different level than anyone else, and will hold the belt as long as he wants. He made rashads hand speed look like slow motion, and not to mention his reflexes, and footwork, from being taught karate by a grandmaster since age three. Muay thai or any other form is useless against his karate, and even anderson silva has mentioned , that when they spar machida makes him look silly also.

by dtoto on Sep 28, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

It will be a great fight! Can’t wait to see it I got my money on Bones!

I understand that new upcomings fighters have to take one step by time but in my opinion Jones has an easy fight against MAtt Hamill.
Jones KO for sure.

by ThiagO on Sep 28, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

Hamill has taken hits from heavy hands and knees and not even close to stumble

by BudsyKind on Sep 28, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

Good fight, never really rated Hamill and Bones looks like the next big thing at LHW, but he is still very raw and has a lot to improve on. Jones is the better all round fighter and his wrestling is so unorthodox that even Hamill will have trouble handling his wrestling and Matt seems to fancy himself as a striker these days despite having no technique standing, so Bones should win this one comfortably.

This is a really bad match up for Hamill. Matt’s stand up is really bad , he just charges foward while taking hits, drops his hands all the time , and his punches a really slow. I will say he can take a punch though

by Lestat on Sep 28, 2009 12:36 PM EDT reply actions

I like Hammill in this fight. Call me crazy. We’ll see. Jones is going places, that’s for sure.

by Jonny on Sep 28, 2009 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

me too. jones will hit him with a fancy strike but hammill will just walk right through it and answer.

by JB on Sep 28, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with lestat, bad matchup for Matt. Jones has a ton more power standing than Bisping or Franklin and if Matt doesnt change his approach in this fight it will be embarrassing for him. I dont see a way that Matt wins this one.

by oldskooljjsu on Sep 28, 2009 1:34 PM EDT reply actions

I want hammill to win,
Sure jones might be faster but so was bisping and matt put a beating on him.
I hope matt is back to his wrestling game, cus he needs it to win this fight smart.
No ko power in matts hands, but many hits will do damage like in most his fights.
Hammill tko 3rd rd
I wouldn’t be surprised if hammill is training with rich for this fight

by phenomenal angel on Sep 28, 2009 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

He won’t able to outwrestle Hamill.Hamill stuffed Munoz who is a way better wrestler than Bones Jones.

by JT on Sep 28, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Hamill by ud, he will go back to his wrestling roots and wear jones down and take it. If Hamill does try to stand with him all fight he will get ko’d but he will go back to the wrestling for this one.

by mma guru on Sep 28, 2009 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

Jon Jones is scary. If he wins this and I think he will then he will get a huge name opponet next. This guy is different from the styles we see out of the same old camps. I see him getting a title shot in 18 months.

by hatteras on Sep 28, 2009 2:37 PM EDT reply actions

i see bones being made to look silly by machida, 18 month or 5 yrs dont matter, machidas hand speed , timing and footwork, are on a much higher level than anyone. MACHIDAS STRIKING is on a even much higher level than anderson. Muay thai or any other style is useless against his karate

by dtoto on Sep 28, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I love these armchair coaches… “His handspeed, technique, reflexes and stamina combined with the almighty insight to higher powers when he summons the spirit of jeet kun do”

Get over yourself…. Sure, Machida diffuses muy thai and other orthodox styles or mma. Point that most are trying to make is Jon Jones style is completely unconventional.. And THAT combined with the fact that he is a physical freak makes him so scary.

Styles make fights…. When you are in a camp training with guys who have seen many of the common techniques used today. It is obvious somebody will master defending these styles.. Machida has NEVER seen a fighter like Bones. When Bones gets a few more experienced guys under his belt and refines his technique.. Machida will have a very serious problem coming to him.

by Fool on Oct 6, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Jone will win by some krazy never before seen striking technique!!!

by DaDeal on Sep 28, 2009 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

One inch punch.

by MMACrossfire on Sep 28, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Bones isn’t just skilled. He has a great advantage when he fights: he’s calm and relaxed. Hamill is also (usually) relaxed, and of course Hamill has huge power in his hands… and feet. I think Hamill will give Bones fits, but ultimately I see Bones winning a UD. The one question is Bones’ conditioning. Hamill will definitely come ready for three hard rounds. Will Bones?

by MMACrossfire on Sep 28, 2009 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

Hammill wins this fight by experience! Jon Jones is all hype and hasn’t even sniffed the same competition as Hammill. THE HAMMER beating the Jon Jones hype train back to Iowa CC.

no one replied before you, so how would i know if anyone thought it was funny or not ?

by Hater R us on Sep 29, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

hamill is a beast of a wrestler, but his standup is just too slow. also, for as dominant a wrestler as he is, he really doesn’t have a great GnP game. he needs to develope that, not his standup, if he wants to be a force in the wieght division. if he stands up, he will get picked apart by jones. it will look similar to the flanklin fight.

by Conan the Barbarian on Sep 28, 2009 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

Cant wait for this fight.. i dont know if hamil could out wrestle this kid… Jones also has crazy throws its gonna be to tuff to get a take down
