Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) 2009 Barcelona quick results for Sept. 27

The Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) 2009 grappling competition and tournament from Barcelona, Spain, for Sept. 26-27, is officially in the books.
The big story of the day was 20-year-old Rafael Mendes upsetting early favorite Rubens "Cobrinha" Charles via points (3-0). After a high-paced and evenly matched opening, Mendes took command in the waning minutes and secured Charles' back to rack up the winning points.
Despite breezing through the quarterfinals (via slick flying armbar), former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 contestant Vinícius Magalhães fell to Alexandre Ribeiro in the semifinals. Mags however didn't leave the tournament empty handed, claiming third place in the Absolutes by outpointing Iceland's Gunnar Nelson.
"Xande's" win over Magalhães helped catapult him into the Absolute Finals, unfortunately an arm injury suffered during an inverted triangle escape brought a swift halt to the action and gave Brazil's Braulio Estima the win and a crisp $40,000.
Estima, who also claimed the -88kg Final over Andre Galvao, is now slated to face Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in a ADCC 2011 superfight.
Also taking home division bragging rights were current Strikeforce heavyweight Fabricio Werdum (+99kg), Pablo Popovich (-77kg) and Brazilian lady grapplers Hannette Staack (+60kg) and Luanna Alzuguir (-60kg).
Staunch mixed martial arts veteran Jeff "The Snowman" Monson, female fightmonger Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and ex-WEC competitor David Avellan all placed third within their respective weight classes.
Fading mat technicians Ricco Rodriguez and Dean Lister tried to rebound from early exits on Saturday by throwing their hat into the Absolutes Tournament, but were once again bounced from the competition in the opening round.

ADCC is an invitation-only event held every two years to determine the world’s best no-gi grapplers. Only 16 competitors in each of five weight classes plus the "absolutes" are selected, and it is widely considered the most difficult submission fighting event to qualify for.

I called Estima coz everything else got jacked up when Maia fell out. Popovitch finally gets revenge but i gotta say Mendes is the probly the biggest winner out of the entire tourny. I remember tellin Alpha that this kid was special after Mundials. Hope he comes to MMA.

I just got back from Barcelona about 10 mins ago and thought I’d check my favourite MMA site and I see Braulio on the first news story. Thank you Mania!!
Although we had a few hiccups during the weekend it was overall an amazing experience.
The obvious highlight was seeing Braulio take both his division and the absolute. We were all nearly crying with happiness. Definitely the high point of the weekend. The inverted triangle on Galvao was just beautiful! As well as his RNC on Marcelo. He was truly on fire.
But the crazy thing a few people may not be aware of was even though Braulio finished all but one of his fights and claimed 1st place they didn’t select him for the absolute final 16!! There were some people selected who didn’t even win their 1st fight in their division! In the end after some debating and lots of other people complaining he should be in it (including Renzo who was a really cool guy) they selected him for the final 16 and tried to cover it up with some weak excuse about they didn’t want too many Brazilians in the final. Well I think that just made him more determined to win the whole thing and boy win it is what he did, and he seemed to with ease.
I’ll definitely be checking out Barcelona again too. A really cool place with lots of stuff to check out and LOADS of hot girls too. All in all I couldn’t have asked for more!!

Man you are so lucky. I would kill to go there. Congrats on your teacher takin it to everyone. Was it just me or where there a lot of guys playing inverted guard it seemed from PBPs. Give some tidbits and interesting stories that won’t be on the vids that come out man!!!
Also you might be best qualified to comment on this around here – was there any truth to Popov’s cheating during his match with Marcelo. I’ve been reading conflicting sh!t everywhere.

Yeah it was amazing all round but you’ll hopefully get a chance to check out the next one as it is likely to be in USA next (assuming you’re American.) I personally hope it is in Japan next as I’ve always wanted to go there but need a bit of an incentive to fly out there.
Yeah there was a lot of people playing with the inverted guard especially Ryan Hall who had an awesome one.
As for Popovich, I think there was some debate regarding the final points he gained but I didn’t hear anything about cheating although Marcelo did look very disappointed about something. Just assumed it was something to do with points.
There wasn’t a lot to say about other stuff that happened that you wouldn’t see from watching the fights but some non-fight related stuff I found interesting were the Spanish Hell’s Angels were in control of security for the event! Collecting tickets was a nightmare as all prepaid tickets were in envelopes with your name written on it UNSORTED in a huge pile on the ticket office floor! We were seriously pissed off as Victor (braulio’s brother) told us he had already had one fight that we had now missed waiting in the queue as he thought it would be a funny joke. I don’t think he realised he could have started a riot with that as we started telling people in the queue that the fights were already staring! Oops! Luckily when we got in the first fight started about 5 mins after though.
I guess there were lots of cool moments while I was there and it will gradually come back to me over the next few days reminiscing with the lads at the gym but I suppose meeting all the fighters was a nice highlight too.
I definitely recommend seeing an ADCC finals if you get a chance and you are a big grappling fan as it is the pinnacle in my eyes along with the Mundials.

That’s pretty funny about the tickets. Yea with popovitch a ton of people were saying that he was grapping Marcelo’s shorts and rash guard. A couple of pokes to the eye and other nonsense too. I am only asking coz Marcelo himself looked pissed and make multiple complaints to the ref – its known he’s one of the nicest people around. Definitely gotta go now.

NNR, iTS TRUE! Palhares vs. Linhares at the TUF Finale!
by john G on Sep 27, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Linhares is the worst possible fighter that could sign with the UFC – no stand-up and no heart = FAIL. His ground game maybe be good but it’s not great – he would get owned by Belcher, Leben et al, let alone the top dogs.
