Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) 2009 Barcelona quick results

The 2009 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) grappling competition got underway today (Sept. 26) in Barcelona, Spain, wrapping up the quarterfinal brackets as well as a much ballyhooed superfight that saw Ronaldo "Jacaré" Souza overcome the venerable Robert Drysdale.

Former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 contestant Vinícius Magalhães breezed through the quarterfinals (via slick flying armbar), as did former UFC and current Strikeforce heavyweight Fabricio Werdum.

Also making the cut was staunch mixed martial arts veteran Jeff "The Snowman" Monson, female fightmonger Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and ex-WEC competitor Glover Teixeira.

Taking an early exit was fading mat technicians Ricco Rodriguez, Dean Lister and Márcio "Pe de Pano" Cruz along with Megumi "Mega Megu" Fuji and Kron Gracie.

ADCC is an invitation-only event held every two years to determine the world’s best no-gi grapplers. Only 16 competitors in each of five weight classes plus the "absolutes" are selected, and it is widely considered the most difficult submission fighting event to qualify for.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for the remaining results and highlights from this year's tournament.

(Special thanks to Chris Nelson over at Bloody Elbow for the compiling the results)

Impressive…but I just can’t stand Vinnie….stems from TUF when the guy was more concerned about looking pretty than winning fights.

Match ups I am really looking forward to:

Fabricio Werdum (Brazil) vs. Saulo Ribeiro (Brazil)

Xande Ribeiro (Brazil) vs. Vinícius Magalhães (Brazil)…This is

Anyone got a link for Vinny’s flying arm bar win?

Man i am surprised at some of the guys who made it to quarters like K-Taro, Glover Texeira. For the women, i figured Megumi was close to a lock when Kyra dropped out. Hillary is definitely legit. Marcelo’s got 77 locked up. I wonder how Kron would have done if he wasn’t matched up with him early. Galvao vs Estima in finals IMO. Hope Galvao locks that up. Also i heard that Cobrinha opened as a ridiculous underdog before tons of people jumped on it. Anyone here get in on the action?

I’ve got Xande and Saulo in those matchups. Agreed about Drysdale, I don’t like him either for some reason.

whats wrong with drysdale?

by brendan on Sep 26, 2009 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he talks a lot of shit about MMA when he knows nothing about it. See Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva pre-fight interviews with drysdale.
i think me and a lot of other maniacs lost what little respect we had for him after that.

by Blunt N' Beer on Sep 26, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he is a prick who chills with Frank Mir.

NNR: where are you getting odds to bet this event? NOt betus, right?

I would have to agree with Xande and Saulo picks

Vinnies arm bar was simply beautiful!

by john G on Sep 26, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Drysdale was just trying to sell tickets for a fighter he was training. There is not a chance that Drysdale actually beleived his own crap.

by oldskooljjsu on Sep 26, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t bet this so i didn’t see any odds. On bookmaker they opened Cobrinha at +1500. Then the idiots got burned when in a matter of minutes it went down to +100.

by The Prodi-G$ on Sep 26, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Almost all the name MMA fighters dropped out. He didn’t wanna injure himself i am guessing.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 26, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he was afraid of fighting sum ground game wizard at his own weight class.

by guyverbob on Sep 26, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Mousasi too?

by Synyster on Sep 26, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fedor said himself before that it was just a rumor that he was going to participate in ADCC. He never planed to do so

by zheka on Sep 26, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mousasi got a shoulder injury, Fedor now has a match with Brett Rogers scheduled that takes precedence. When Fedor was supposed to participate originally he was to face Barnett before this event.

He’s training for a fight he has coming up in Nov.

Why wasn’t Fedor and Mousasi in it? I thought they said they’ll be competing this year?

by Boris on Sep 26, 2009 5:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m surprised Roger Gracie wasn’t competing, I’m sure I read somewhere that it was Roger not Jacare facing Drysdale. Not heard anything about his Strikeforce debut either. Anyone know what’s the latest news on him?

by David W-S on Sep 26, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Injured himself after he caught the mumps and it moved to his testicles (true story). He’s signed to MMA but he isn’t really into it. It’s people pressuring him so he’ll take his slow @ss time to take a match and he doesn’t seem to want it as a career. Truly a shame.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 26, 2009 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks NNR, bad luck for Gracie that sounds like an awful illness. Hopefully he’s fit soon. Shame that he isn’t into MMA, I thought that he might make a real go at it when he signed for SF but obviously not. Bit of a waste to be honest as he’s world class at BJJ and could give any HW fits on the ground, including Fedor.

by David W-S on Sep 26, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea he would have definitely been the man to carry that Gracie torch. Probly the best Gracie so far even according to Rickson. I don’t know what taking BJJ Worlds for a 9th time would do for anyone. He’s already shown that he can do whatever he wants to whoever when he subbed everyone with basic gi cross choke.

Ribeiro’s brother will win their respective categories.
Rani the same but Cobrinha (lil snake) is amazing.

Did Ricco Rodriguez get under the 218 pound limit. Last time I saw him he weighed about 260. Good for him. He could fight when he had his life together. Light Heavyweight would be good for him

by Lance on Sep 27, 2009 12:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Why was Kron even included…because he’s a Gracie. The person who should have been there is Lucase Leite. He beat Kron twice this year and is pretty much considered to have the best 1/2 guard in the world, which is why he was chosen to help BJ Penn for his last fight. He was unable to fly back to Brazil for the trials because he was with BJ in Hawaii. Lucas will be competing in a super fight against Nick Diaz October 10, 2009 in San Francisco.
