Thiago Alves: Beware of the new 'Pitbull' on Dec. 5

Props: Tatame.com
Quoteworthy:
"You’re gonna see a different Pitbull. You didn’t see my wrestling and my ground game, because I didn’t have an opportunity to use it, and I feel that my career started after this last fight… I grew up a lot as a person and as a fighter, I’m recharged and I’ll get what I want, the belt. I’ll fight at December 5. I have an opponent, but I can’t say yet."
Former number one welterweight contender Thiago Alves talks about his rebirth as a complete fighter following his five-round unanimous decision loss to 170-pound kingpin Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100. "The Pitbull" will have to get back in line and work his way up the welterweight ladder for another crack at the unstoppable Canadian. Who’s next? Rumor mill has him facing fellow Brazilian Paulo Thiago at the TUF 10 Finale on Dec. 5, but perhaps you want to play matchmaker in the comments section below — Jon Fitch, Marcus Davis, Dan Hardy … what showdown do you want to see?

Thiago Alves is one of my favorites to watch. I’m sure he’ll beat whoever’s put in front of him.

I thought he was supposed to be fighting Paulo Thiago on Dec 12th? I don’t care for that match up too much myself. I like the idea most of you have mentioned which is Swick. If Swick can beat Alves then he deserves the next title shot.

i would like to see that fight mcart!~ but i don’t think it would be good for thiago to take a low profile fighter..
i like the sounds of swick vs alves.. that would be a great fight, buster.

Swick-Alves and Ellenberger-Davis both make sense to me. Gives Swick a chance to truly earn a WW title fight and to be fair if he beats Alves then a fight with GSP would be interesting, albeit still a mismatch.
Hopefully Thiago can master the weight cut and the mental game as he looked drained mentally and physically before the GSP fight and lost it before it even began in my opinion.
Ellenberger would destroy the Plastic Paddy, he was unlucky not to get a draw in the Condit fight (I gave him a 10-8 in R1) and to be honest Carlos was given a long time to recover and he got away with not being stopped, though he did well to continue both times.
by David W-S on Sep 25, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Big fan of Carlos but I remember thinking it was going to be stopped TWICE…the second time Condit turtled and went down, I thought it was over for sure

I’d also like to see Daley against Alves…that would be some solid fireworks.
by Buster Bluth on Sep 25, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
McArthur….It’s funny you say that about Condit and turtleing. I thought the EXACT same thing. He got rocked, fell to the ground and turtled. And he didn’t just stay there for a fraction of a second either, he took some abuse while he was down. I remember thinking they were going to stop it and didn’t. I hardly find this an acceptable form of defense until you recover.

how the judges score the fights in the UFC is more often than not wrong!.. I think it’s unacceptable to have such lousy judges, Cecil Peoples has to be the worst!

I’d love to see him fight Swick, but I bet Swick will get Daley… he would dominate Paulo Thiago. I’d like to see a rematch with Fitch.

Fight I would like to see the most would be:
Alves vs. Semtex, but those are 2 of my favorites and I would hate to see either lose.
Fight that makes the most sense for Alves working his way to another title shot:
Alves vs. Swick
Honorable mention: alves vs. Condit
I wouldnt mind giving Koscheck a rematch and watching Alves Batter him again!
alves WILL BE WW champion one day!

Alves vs Thiago does nothing for Alves, lose-lose situation, a win moves him nowhere in the ranking and a loss crushes his chances of another title shot any time soon, he better fight someone with a name
by brendan on Sep 25, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah but sometimes a losing streak gets you a title shot more then the quality of fighters that you beat. I am going to give you 2 examples:
1) Swick! The man has basically shot himself into contender status by default. He has never beaten a top 5 WW or Middleweight but he has a little winning streak, and GSP whiped the division clean, so he is basically becoming a contender by default.
2) Kenny Florian! Do you realize that other then Joe Daddy, Kenny got a title shot without beating any top fighters? The man went on a big winning streak agaiinst C-evel taent that arent in the UFC anymore, and beating 2 young promising prospects in HUerta, Lauzon who were outmatched from the get go. But he had a long list of names that he beat and he got a 2nd title shot.
Not saying I like it this way, I actually HATE IT! I am justs pointing out the way the UFC does business. i I had it my way, you would NEVER get a title shot without at least beating a top 10 fighter and then a top 5 contender in back to back fights….AT THE VERY LEAST! If the UFC was a real sport, thats the way title shots would be awarded, but SADLY ITS NOT!
by john G on Sep 25, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
C`mon john G the only fighter Kflo never fought to see if he was deserving was Sherk. Huerta & Stevenson are both top ten fighters in the uFC and Joe Daddy in a lot of fans minds was a top five fighter by your statement most fans would believe he deserved the shot. Swick is an exciting fighter but wont get a shot until he beats one of the other top contenders either. The UFC puts fights on by mostly what the fans want to see combined with their talent level. The only fighter that got a chance to fight for the belt way to early was Brock but Brock came in a opportune time when the HW division was thin in talent.

WHO HAS SWICK REALLY FOUGHT OTHER THAN OKAMI? I MEAN SWICK REALLY IS NOT A TOP WELTERWEIGHT!!! THE WELTERWEIGHT DIVISON IS NOT THAT STACKED ANYMORE!!! GSP IS IN THE SAME BOAT AS SILVA, THERE REALLY IS NOBODY ELSE TO FIGHT!!! SILVA IS TO BIG FOR GSP BUT SIZE REALLY DOESN’T MATTER IN THIS SPORT!!! GSP SHOULD MOVE UP IN WEIGHT AND FIGHT A TOP MIDDLEWEIGHT AND THEN TRY FOR A FIGHT WITH SILVA IF HE WINS!!! BUT I DO LIKE THE IDEA OF SILVA FIGHTING MIR!!!
by bobby on Sep 25, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Size doesn’t matter?!?!?!? Tell that to B.J.Penn! Tell that to Randy Couture! You think he’d have lost to a 220 lb Lesnar?
If you’re talking about GSP moving up 15 lbs to fight second-level Middleweights, then no, the size wouldn’t be too much for his skills to overcome. But youre talking about him moving up to fight a the top guy in the world who walks around 45 lbs heavier than GSP (and considerably taller too). That’s not a fair fight.

Like Hughes schooled GSP there first fight? I know GSp controlled Alves the lst fight but Alves showed some great strength and cardio wich is needed to compete against GSP but clearly his game was not at the level of GSP nor was he fully prepared for what GSP had in store for him I do expect a much better Alves the next time they fight and trust me he will be fighting GSP by his third or fourth fight with the destructuion he is going to put on his next two or three opponents. I’m not going to say he is going to win as GSP is the man and I’m a huge fan of GSP but I do like Alves and see he has the skill, strength and endurance needed to compete against the greatest WW in the world and in my opinion Alves is a clear #2.

GSP took Alves down 10 times as opposed to 5 with Fitch…which only means that Alves was able to get back up more often and force Georges to take him down again.
by shonuff on Sep 25, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
also gsp did take down alves 10 times, but what was amazing was that he was basically fighting alves on one leg after his injury in the second, and still managed to toy with alves.
by dtoto on Sep 26, 2009 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think it’s just awesome that they bring in these guys with “unbelievable takedown defense” “off-the-charts TDD” etc.“World class JuJitsu”“Impenatrable guard” and GSP just takes them down whenever he dang well pleases and passes their guard like their legs are made of Jello. And he doesn’t even have any wrestling background!
GSP rocks!
I also love it when guys like Evan Tanner and Rich Franklin who taught themselves MMA from books rise up and become Champions. That there’s some serious grit!

Dan Hardy would be all Thiago could handle. It could go either way.
by JRE on Sep 25, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seriously? I like Hardy but he wouldn’t have a hope at beating Alves, he has some decent hands but wouldn’t be able to cope with Thiago’s brutal leg kicks and knees, whilst on the ground he doesn’t have anything that could trouble Thiago. I don’t see how Dan could possibly win.

exactly!! Swick doesn’t fair well against guys w/ a lot of strength. He vocalized it when he fought Louiseau and Okami, and I think he would have the same feelings towards Alves and GSP. I think Alves is a clear #2 in the WW division, and the only person that will be a threat to GSP in the near future.

Rashad already said no, doubt that he’ll change his mind even though there’s no longer a chance that he’ll face Rampage. It would be a much better fight though and a cracking main event.

yeah, I just read another Rashad interview saying he wants no part of Couture. He was talking about Randy’s age and coming off two losses, which we all know is BS cause Randy’s age hasn’t been a factor yet adn his two losses are to two of the top 3 HEAVYWEIGHTS in the world…AS IF “Sugar” could even hang with Lesnar or Nog! there seems to be an abundance of fighters on the cusp of challenging GSP but none that are realistically close
by McArthur on Sep 25, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
there truly is only one way to settle it, but will never happen. Silva and Dana need to sit down and pick the top 8 WW outside of GSP and do a grand prix, not over one night but a few events. while all that is going on and the ww belt is still in play rather than just sittin out due to TUF or any other factor they could have GSP try his hand at middleweight so he can get the weight gain going and everything for a what i think a must happen fight with anderson.
by Muffin Stuffer on Sep 25, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Love your first idea, Muff. A Grand Prix for top contender would be a great way to bring new life to WW.
Middleweight could use a little of that same medicine once the dust settles from the Silva/Hendo/Vitor stuff.
Lightweight too! So many great guys in that division, but nobody ready to handle B.J.
Better yet, lets duplicate PRIDE’s greatest masterpiece, the OPEN WEIGHT GRAND PRIX! (or in UFC’s case, divide it into Over/Under 200lbs). These dominant champs who want to expand their legacy but don’t have any serious challengers could throw their hat in the ring. It would be rockin! Dang I miss Pride!
by shonuff on Sep 25, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like the tournament ideas, maybe that could be the next step for TUF, where they have a house full of top contenders and give the winner of the tournament a title shot, that way dominant champions like Andy, GSP and BJ could have a legitimate contender and no matter who the opponent is it’ll be easy for the UFC to promote and the buyrate for the eventual PPV would be huge. They’ve already done it once with TUF 4, maybe they could use that idea again only instead of has beens give top contenders the opportunity.
Another idea would be to copy off boxing and put on a similar tournament to the Super 6, where the top fighters in a weight class all compete against each other over several events and the eventual winner becomes the undisputed contender, giving the champion a more worthwile opponent.
by David W-S on Sep 25, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No way top contenders are gonna shore themselves up in a house for 8 or 10 weeks for a reality TV show! Forget MMA, name ANYBODY at the peak of their career who did a reality TV show. Reality TV is for has-beens and wannabes.

They won’t put hardy in with anyone top 10, he’s going to be britains new poster-boy, so he’s going to fight Condit i bet.
Hughes has to fight either fitch or kos, the kos fight is probably the one. Fitch gets whoever else is left. It just is hard when all those guys are from AKA and won’t fight eachother.

it doesnt matter how good alves td defense becomes, gsp is on another level, he is to fast, and athletic for alves. there is not a fighter in ww gsp cant take down at will. HE TRAINS with HW olynpic wrestlers, and they say he can compete in the olympics, when its reporeted that he takes LHWs in his own camp down at will like rashad, jardine, and marquardt, what chance does thiago really have.

That is actually myth that he takes down LHW at will. He has stated that some press people happened to be there on a day when he was rolling with some of his heavier teammates. He said it’s not true that he just takes everyone down at will; they take him down too, etc.
But I agree that he has one of the highest-level teams around. And you’re right that his wrestling is top drawer. I think you’re right: there’s nobody in the WW division for him, unless they bring in… I have no idea who they’d bring in.

i think swick should fight hardy, then hughes vs. fitch and serra for kos, and daley fight condit, and put that trash kampmann against hendricks
kampmann lost to condit, the decision was garbage ahahaha

You didn’t see Thiago’s wrestling and ground game because he doesn’t have one! He could never match gsp. However, having ragged him, he is a REAL sweet striker and should definately get another go after picking up his ground skills.

Rematch with Fitch would be sweet.

Sorry Thiago – you had AMPLE opportunity to showcase your wrestling and jujitsu in your title fight. Maybe what you mean to say is you didn’t have a tomato can opponent to showcase your wreslting and bjj against.

“You didn’t see my wrestling and my ground game, because I didn’t have an opportunity to use it”
Yeah, that’s because GSP destroyed you. What a joke!

I think it would be hilarious if GSP went down to lightweight and dethroned BJ Penn. I think that would be, in a way, more satisfying than having GSP fight Silva and lose.
