First ladies: Couture vs Vera (part deux) on tap for November Strikeforce event

Not to be upstaged by the men whose name they bear, female fighters Kerry Vera (1-0) and Kim Couture (1-1) are in talks to throw leather at a possible November Strikeforce event according to Sherdog.com.

While event details are still under wraps, a date of Nov. 20 is being discussed, putting the ladies in battle just a few days after Brandon Vera and Randy Couture do their thing at UFC 105 from the MEN Arena in Manchester, England on November 14.

Mrs. V made her mixed martial arts debut last May, taking a unanimous decision victory over fellow rookie Leslie Smith at Bellator Fighting Championship 6.

"Sugar Free," who is now Randy-free, appeared at "Night of Combat" in June 2008, taking a beating en route to a unanimous decision loss. Couture rebounded with an impressive TKO win over the hapless Lina Kvokov under the Strikeforce banner the following June.

While it's still early in the careers of both leading ladies, the good news is they come from experienced camps. Expect nothing but a complete effort from each combatant.

Stay tuned for an official announcement from Strikeforce regarding the bout as well as more information on a possible date and venue as they become available.

Mrs Vera looks sexy, I’m thinking with my dipstick what can I say. Other than that this fight isn’t very interesting, big names if they were their male counter parts but other than that these women got their shots because their boyfriends gave it to them. I’d give it to them to if they want a fee shot. lmao the winner of this fight will probably get a title shot with WMMA being so weak.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2009 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t mean to sound sexiest but two chicks fighting is not entertaining imo………

by UFC.moose@googlemail.com on Sep 24, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Kerry will kill her standing and on the ground. Very technical striker. Her fight will leslie was fun even though Smith was outclassed and lasted through sheer grit.

Cogito – you’re right about Couture but not Kerry. She’s been fighting MT for a long while. She’s also done some things at grapplers quest if i remember right.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 24, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

One of the main problems is the grappler vs striker game is so unbelievably un even between women that its not even fun to watch. We are currently in the beggining stages of mens MMA where grapplers had to be amazingly good to even stand a chance against a striker. Until women start rounding their skills out more, it’ll remain uninteresting to hardcore fans. I’m willing to watch the fight because someone always gets banged up but in terms of respect, WMMA still has a ways to go for me to crave a womens fight. Unless they are both really sexy and like to wear tight spandex obviously lmao

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s why you go to japanese promotions for womens’ fights. Grappling is off the chain – definitely on par if not better in terms of technical acumen but way more aggressiveness. And standup is coming up especially in the last three years or so with a lot of girls crossing over from shootboxing. You’ve got a couple of girls far and above the rest but like you said – more time means more seasoning. The lack of competitors also means that new talent is fed to girls like Megumi or Yuka in their 2nd or 3rd fights so it kind of ruins girls early on. But you’re definitely spot on that more women gotta develop before even hardcore fans start appreciating it.

Now that Kim got dumped, how about she stop trying to make a name off of Randy’s last name?

by john G on Sep 24, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

FYI: NNR is right, Vera’s Muy Tai is Nasty. Kim’s getting busted up in this one for sure!

by john G on Sep 24, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

NNR I remember the vids you showed me and they were pretty good, but they were primarily grappling like you said. With time womens MMA will come up I have no doubt of that but its still developing as of right now. The Mens MMA is developing too and eventually fighters like GSP and Silva will be plentiful.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

God I can’t wait for that day. A day when being a GSP is as common as a chris lytle. A day when you’ve got BJ like talent up and down a division.

correct me if im wrong, but arnt randy and brandon fighting at ufc 107? or are they letting their chicks handle this one?

by denniskuderjr on Sep 24, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

MMACrossfire. Definately not a women’s MMA hater. I’m a fight fan period. But to say this is an intersting match up my question is how. Meaning based on what? What makes this intersting? the fact that their husbands are fighting each other? That doesn’t make it interesting. That just shows this small upstart show trying to gain publicity for its show by piggybacking a UFC match to promote itself. Not a bad marketing ploy I guess but don’t try to sell me on this fight as intersting. One has 2 fights and the other has 1. 3 fights between them combined lol. Yeah real interesting match up i can’t wait LMAO

by getrawbc on Sep 24, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

And yes Strikeforce is a small upstart show. CBS may make you seem huge but all the TBA’s for an event 6 weeks away shows your true colors.

cool

by gaara on Sep 24, 2009 10:08 AM EDT reply actions

Get Vince McMahon involved and turn this into a mixed tag match, then I can get behind it. Of course, since Randy and Kim are divorced, what would happen is in the middle of the match Kim would run in to save Randy but instead would kick him in the junk, then they would have a 3-on-1 beatdown for a few minutes until Liddell runs in to clear the ring and save his old friend.

Good job STRIKEFORCE. Doing everything right. The effort is sure there. Sounds like this Nov 20th card is really gonna be a force to reckon with.

FEDOR
Mousasi
Sheilds
Rodgers
Miller
Lady Vera
Lady couture

I’m missing a couple @ that. Great job STRIKEFORCE!!!

Let the part timers be heard. Uh oh… I can already here the marching of lil babies in “this is my 1st UFC” t shirts.

Bring it

Since when is Fedor vs Rogers on November 20th? I think the big news out of this story is that fact Strikeforce is planning another event for November.

Right now they have November 6th Challenger Series Show, November 7th Fedor vs Rogers and now a possible November 20th date.

I would really like to see November 20th event feature some of the Strikeforce talent we have not seen in months. IE:

Frank Shamrock
Scott Smith
Benji Radach
Robbie Lawler
Andrei Arlovski
Joe Riggs
Mike Whitehead

How about Matt Lindland vs Robbie Lawler? that would be a interesting Middleweight fight.

by markie on Sep 24, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Presumably this will be for the Challenger series, as I don’t see Mrs Couture (ex)-Vera being put on a CBS card, when they’ve only had 3 fights between them and the only 2 big draws in WMMA are Carano and Cyborg, with the latter arguably relying on the hype behind her prettier and more famous opponent. Unless some fans think that it’s their husbands fighting instead, I don’t think many people will want to watch it. It’d be a joke if the winner got to fight Cyborg for the women’s title.

by David W-S on Sep 24, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

Obviously CBS would not do two MMA Shows within a 2 week period, (They mentioned a while back about wanting to do MMA every 3 months) I was thinking more along the lines that showtime would want to put together a event with some Strikeforce “Name Fighters” and that could be what this November 20th date would be. They already have a November 6th Challenger Series. I also think Strikeforce is trying to load up another Strikeforce event in November because they know UFC can’t counter program them with a live event that month.

by markie on Sep 24, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Strikeforce don’t have a big roster so surely they’re not going to have 3 events in a month, it’s rare that the UFC put on that many shows and even then they usually include diluted cards like foreign shows and Fight Nights. I’d rather see Strikeforce put on a stacked CBS show than put on weaker cards on CBS and Showtime, as well as the Challenger series. If this made the main card of a Showtime show then it would be a diluted card, it shouldn’t be included on the main card of any major Strikeforce show whether it’s on CBS or Showtime.

This fight is blatantly using the Couture-Vera fight at 105 to promote a fight between two inexperienced women in a thin division that will end up being a one-sided beatdown win for Kerry.
