UFC Quick Quote: Matt Hughes has no interest in fighting a 'kid' like Josh Koscheck

"I find Koscheck calling me out kind of interesting and I actually don’t know why he is doing that. I was used to kids doing this when I was the champ, but as you know I don’t have the belt now and I’m puzzled as to why Koscheck wants to fight me and not the champion in the weight class. I have no interest in fighting Koscheck and, as he was showing everybody, he’s just a kid. As of yet, the UFC has never come to me and asked me to fight him."
-- Former 170-pound division kingpin Matt Hughes breaks down UFC 103 on his official blog, including the comments made by welterweight contender Josh Koscheck. After disposing of Frank Trigg, "Kos" was asking for Matt Hughes in a future fight, perhaps so he can cement his status as a serious contender. Reverend Hughes however, can't figure out what his beef is and chalks it up to him being 'just a kid.' What is Koscheck's beef? Is it a compliment to call out a "legend" because it's an honor to fight him? Or is he trying to push the once-great champ out of the picture? What's your take, Maniacs?

As a Hughes fan this is disappointing. his killer instinct is clearly gone. I’ll still watch his fights but I can’t defend him as being an upper tier fighter any longer if he is afraid of Kos. I know you all are like, upper tier? Yeah Hughes lost to GSP and Thiago, both top five WWs, he still hasn’t been beaten by anyone less

Why is Koscheck fighting old timers and calling out old timers?

Don’t know but Swick did this too. I’m a huge Swick fan constantly saying that most fans underestimate the guy but I have no idea why him and now Kos are calling out Matt Hughes. Matt actually gave a pretty humble response basically saying why are you targeting me. I tend to agree with Matt on this one. Hughes will get raped by any of the top 6-8 welterweights in the UFC.

In fairness Cogito, Hughes hasnt been fighting top fighters recently. Only top fighters he faced in recent history demolished him. I hate Hughes the PERSON, but I have a lot of respect for him as a FIGHTER, or at least I had! Out of all the top ground n pound wrestlers that I hate, at least Hughes mixed in a ton of high level jits to his ground assault, and that is what I liked about HUghes…but I think you hit the nail on the head. Killer instinct is GONE..he knows its a matter of time before he gets exposed so he is trying to prolong his career by fighting 2nd tier competition to keep collecting paychecks…Its a business 1st and foremost so I cant really bash him for it, as much as I freaking hate his guts! Hughes has Jumped Tito and made it to 3rd place of fighters I like seeing get smashed the most. For those that keep up. The updated list is as follows (lol):
#1)mir
#2)Forrest
#3)hughes
#4)Tito
#5)couture
Just a Kid? Really Hughes? Kos is only about 5 years younger. I believe he is 31 years old and has been around the block more then a few times…Dont get how you could call him a kid. Find a better excuse for hiding your fear!

I have to disagree with anyone that says Hughes can’t beat KOS. I think he wants to fight in money fights is all. Kos isn’t a draw and Hughes doesn’t have a lot of fights left in him. I think he is thinking of his legacy instead of the legacies of these young guys. Sure Kos would be the fave in this fight, but Hughes can grind out a win, the same way GSP did against Kos. Not saying Hughes is as good as GSP, but I think his wrestling is still better than Joshs.

If he doesn’t want Kos, I wanna see AJ fight Hughes. Anthony hates him already – Could produce the most violent KO ever after what he did to his homeboy Tommy.

How about Kos call out Aj? Ive been a hughes fan for years but, Kos, calling him out is dumb.IMO. Hughes had it for a while, but any mma fan can see, hes running on empty. So, Kos shouldnt want an easier fight. Lets see kos call out a some new blood. Or will he go to sleep again?
by RobMania on Sep 23, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree. Kos is trying to build his name by beating older fighters. Beating Trigg was high profile but not impressive. It will be the same with Hughes. If he wants respect and a title shot call out Daley, AJ, Alves for a rematch, Condit or maybe the title holder GSP!!! Prove you’re the best in the division and fight the best.

Kos is being business smart he knows what everything’s about.. It’s about money! If he beats Hughes he would get alot of recognition even if he doesn’t deserve it, and therefore be in the title picture again!
by RoBerto on Sep 23, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
A lot of heat for Hughes, Why not for Kos as well. Kos should be calling out the guy who beat him. It really seems that he forgot about Paolo Thiago, or are the guys at AKA so close that just because Fitch beat Thiago it made things even for Kos.
Matt would still control Kos on the ground and definitely has better BJJ. Kos needs to learn something from Hughes fighter instinct and challenge the people that you lost against.

interesting list John. I would like to see everyone on this site list the top 5 guys they like or would like to see get beaten to a pulp. mine are as follows.
1. Brock
2. Rashad
3. Diego
4. Thiago Silva
5. Koscheck
by JRE on Sep 23, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Hughes is a good fight for Kos, he’s a big name who’s main strength is Josh’s and his poor striking makes him prone to Koscheck’s wild if dangerous overhand rights. I don’t see why Hughes doesn’t want this fight, who does he expect to face? Other than rematches with the likes of Trigg and Hallman, there aren’t that many fights left for Hughes if he doesn’t want to fight top 10 WWs like Kos so what was the point of signing another contract?
Alves and Paulo are set to face each other, so Kos can’t avenge those defeats, he won’t face Fitch or Swick and is nowhere near a title shot so there aren’t that many top 10 fighters left for him to challenge. I’m far from a Kos fan but he has the right attitude for fighting as he will take on all comers so after taking a few fights on short notice he deserves a big name and beatable opponent like Hughes.
I’d like to see Hughes-Kos and Swick-Semtex, at this point those are the fights that make the most sense, as well as Thiago-Thiago (easy joke I know). Maybe even scrap Hardy-Kim and make Hardy-Kos at 105, seeing how Josh wants another fight soon and has already fought on a UK card as well as being a name and dangerous opponent for Hardy that won’t bore the crowd to death like Kim (if he performs like he did in his last few fights).

I believe he said something smug and condenscending to him when Rumble went up to talk to him at a show. Then in the buildup to the Speer fight, something happened. I don’t remember but there’s a vid of him explaining it in an interview on the KNOXX gear website.

Funny that Matt Hughes kept calling Koscheck a “kid” haha, Hughes is only 4 years older.
by RedDog on Sep 24, 2009 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions
Aside from Hughes being a “Big Name”, I believe that Kos is finally realizing that most of the guys at the top of the welterweight ladder are AKA fighters. Swick, Fitch and Kos are all top rated welterweights. Other than Swick and Fitch, Kos has pretty much taken on everyone at the top of the welterweight division and with losses to only GSP, Alves and Paulo Thiago, Koscheck’s new fight prospects are running thin.
I see a rematch with either Thiago Alves or Paulo Thiago a good test for Kos. Or, conversely, he could take on new opponents such as Dan Hardy or Paul Daley. Defeating any of these guys would certainly add credibility to him claiming the #1 contender spot.
Also, if he wants to take on a “Big Name” he could also call out Matt Sera. He has great drawing power and can sell a fight really well. Even though he doesn’t have the same credentials that Matt Hughes has, Serra would certainly bring a great deal of press to the fight.

Its really pathetic for kos. He got his ass handed to him by Paulo Thiago and Thiago Silva and George St. Pierre. He obviously doesn’t consider hughes or trigg top contenders anymore and they’re not dangerous for him stylistically. He’s scared of tough young fighters and wants to pick on old guys with big names. Hughes is 100% right. Kos is showing not only his immaturity but his lack of class and lack of fighting spirit.

Kos is smart…he wants a “name” opponent and taking on Hughes would be just as easy for him as Trigg was. Back to back wins over a solid vet like Trigg and a legend like Hughes will give him enough momentum to get a top fight and call out GSP. Hughes is also smart cause he knows Kos would steamroll him.

I guess me and Mr Arrogance agree on something. Swick and Kos calling out Hughes is lame. I can’t wait for one of them to call out Matt Serra next?
These AKA guys need to wake up. If 3 of them are in the top 5, these guys are going to have to fight each other or switch divisions. Swick aint going back to 185, so I guess Kos is going to have to drop, Fich is going to have to go up, or no one gets a title shot (fighting the bottom of the division should get you a shot at the strap).
Pretty cut and dry there.
by Felix by day, El Mexicutioner by night on Sep 23, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
No offense, but I would barely call Kos suggesting he fight Hughes next as a “calling him out” situation. He had no tone in his voice that suggested anything else. Maybe Kos sees him as a good opponent, he obviously isn’t ready to get a title shot. Hughes is such a jackass, he takes offense at Kos making a fight suggestion. If Hughes ended up beating him, it would make a statement in my opinion. However, Hughes will fight some washed up chump like Trigg again and bore the shit out of me and my wallet for spending the $54 HD version of the fight.
by slim473 on Sep 23, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with slim here. There was nothing in Josh’s tone that was angry or spiteful. He just acknowledged that Hughes had just signed an extension with the UFC and it would be good for his resume if he can defeat him. Who will Hughes fight with his new contact? If he expects to be competitive in the division he’ll have to fight some top talent, right? Doesn’t Kos qualify? However, I’d prefer to see Kos rematch the guys who have defeated him.

Kos is scared of GSP. Hughes isn’t saying he won’t fight Kos, he’s saying Kos holds no particular interest for him and the UFC isn’t talking about the matchup, so why is Kos focussing on him rather than the title. He’s basically saying Kos is lame for calling him out now when he’s past his prime.
by shonuff on Sep 23, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions
You’d be bashing Kos if he challenged GSP after going 3-3 in his last 6 fights and immediately after beating a has been like Trigg, so why shouldn’t he call out Hughes? He’s one of the few available top WWs who Kos hasn’t already fought, so it makes sense to me. If Hughes doesn’t want to fight top contenders then he shouldn’t have bothered signing an extension.

I completely agree with the Hughes is a joke part Mac but I agreed with him when he said why is kos calling me out. Hughes isn’t an elite fighter and I don’t see how a win over him is going to move Kos or Swick (who has also called out Hughes) that much closer to a title shot. IMO, Hughes would get worked over bad by Kos or Swick. He isn’t top 10 in the welterweight division, much less a contender. I understand what he has accomplished but that was the past. Kind of like Chucky.

If not KOS, then who does he think he needs to beat to get back in contention. Maybe sucking Dana’s balls will do it but probably not. Hughes is a great example of some who talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk. On top of that, he claims that he’ll fight whoever the UFC puts in front of him and doesn’t choose his fights. Hughes gets more and more irrelevant everytime he speaks. He was a great champ, and a great fighter back when most mma fighters were not well-rounded. But he didn’t evolve like the other guys, and now he can’t hang with the top 10 guys today. Yes and that is definitely the right thing to do. He gets fed to Kos right out of the gate and Dana talks about cutting him already. Kos would crush Hughes at this point. If their wrestling is roughly equal, then the striking (power) clearly goes to Kos… and that’s why he’s calling him out. He wants a safe bet win over a name opponent. We all know Hughes is well past his competitive prime. I’d rather see Kos fight a guy like Anthony Johnson… see what they’re both really made of.
by Fidel Cashflow on Sep 23, 2009 1:58 PM EDT reply actions
Kos is a bad fight for Hughes and he knows it. Kos’s wrestling is as good or better and Kos has better striking. Then you factor in that Kos is more athletic, a little younger and a lot hungrier…that equals a bad night for Hughes.

Calling out Matt Hughes is a coward move. Josh Koscheck is trying to avoid a fight with John Fitch or Mike Swick. Koscheck, Fitch and Swick are three of the top five fighters in the 170 pound division. Swick and Fitch are the only fights that make sense for Koscheck. Matt Hughes is not even relevant. The UFC needs to put AKA on notice. Fight for the number one contender spot or go somewhere else to fight.
by Mike on Sep 23, 2009 2:22 PM EDT reply actions
He wants to fight Hughes because he sees it as a easy fight. He could of called out any of the 3 guys who beat him down the first time Alves, Thiago, GSP but then again he might loose those miserably…..again. Plus, Hughes probably wants to fight someone that most casual UFC fans give a shit about so at least he can be the co-main event. I know my post is very bias, just don’t like K-os. Awsome athlete, just think he’s douchy.

It is pretty obvious that Matt Hughes does not wanna fight Josh because he knows he will lose, most people when they get called out they instantly wanna fight the man who called them out to prove they made a bad choice but is seems as if Matt only wants to take fights that he is 100% sure he can win, this means to me he has lost his confidence and as we found out with mirko a fighter with no confidence is only a shell of their former selves.

Its insane what if swick kos or fitch beat gsp who would they fight to defend the crown while gsp worked his way back up. I pray that kos losses his next few fights so he can get dropped hughes will retire soon anyway and people can fight each other. so guys shouldnt wanna fight the most dominant welterweight champ ever? Kos is a pussy, when has he ever turned down a fight? Who else in the ufc fights as much as koscheck? Hughes is the pussy for backing down when being called out in my opinion.

Hughes has been known as a dick most of his career. Some of these guys not only want to beat a “name” but also a guy they don’t like. Perfect opportunity, Hughes isn’t what he once was. Get him now, while he’s still around.

Too bad. A few years ago Hughes would have responded to KOS in a more aggressive fighter-like manner. What has he become? Go back to the farm.
by mikehunt on Sep 23, 2009 3:07 PM EDT reply actions
Everyone would unanimously believe Koscheck would beat an on-his-way-out Hughes, and he would. At this point Koscheck is already past Hughes on his way to the title. So why should he fight him? If anything, Hughes should be calling out Koscheck and Kos should be the one shrugging him off.

I respect you and Im’ma let you finish, but Rua calling out Chuck was the best has-been-callout evah

Is it really that puzzling why Kos called out Hughes?
He wants big fights and wants to fight big names. Thats where the money is.
And Hughes is scared of being embarassed by the beating Kos would give him.
by PP on Sep 23, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions
Your 100 percent right. According to Hughes, Kos coming off a KO loss and just beating a broken down has-been in Frank Trigg is supposed to call out the champ (GSP) who dominated him in a fight 2 years ago??? Hughes is an idiot.

LOL, Hughes he’s calling you out for your name. He’s already fought GSP and Alves, and lost to both, and the loss to Paulo Thiago set him back in terms of becomming a title contender so he needs some big names on his resumé to become relevant in the division again.
He says he’ll fight every month if he can, I wonder if his career goal is maximising his earnings and the “Kos brand” while he’s young and physically able to fight, or if he really wants to push for the title…

What needs to happen is the UFC needs to have Kos fight Swick. Or Kos fight Fitch. Then after he loses, because either one would beat his ass, then we will not have to listen to him try to call out fights that make no sense.
How about Kos vs Kampmann? Kos vs AJ? Or Kos vs Maia?
Kos needs to go away
by scoob on Sep 23, 2009 4:54 PM EDT reply actions
he wants to fight him because he knows he can beat him, and like Thiago Alves, would be glorified after beating hughes.

Alot of you guys are HATING on Hughes bigtime. Using words like “exposed” what could Kos possibly expose about Hughes? that the sport has passed him by? that he isnt a contender anymore? WE ALREADY KNOW THAT, NOTHING IS BEING EXPOSED…..
About Kos, hes trying to beat guys who were good like 5 years ago, who still have a name to big himself up. He wants NO PART of top 5 guys because he knows what will happen.
So instead of trying to work his way back to GSP hes calling out old timers, and no its not strictly an age factor, the sport and level of skill and training has changed dramatically in the past 5 years.
I have alot of respect for Hughes because although hes basically a dinosaur in this sport now, he STILL gets in the with tough guys and tests himself.
You guys are saying Hughes is scared, why doesnt Kos fight Alves again, or Paulo Thiago again, or GSP again, or Fitch or ANYONE in the top 5.
You ever consider that HE is the one thats actually scared?
by bvrasp on Sep 23, 2009 5:27 PM EDT reply actions
thats cuz Kos would steam roll the cockiness out of him
by MuayThai Machine on Sep 23, 2009 6:07 PM EDT reply actions
I think Hughes doesn’t want to lose to a prick like Kos. And besides personally I don’t think Matt Hughes has nothing more to prove. He’s already a future HOF. Kos is just an asshole, because he knows he’ll probably never see the belt around his waste. So rather than go for a title, he wants to say that he beat one of the best in the welterweight division. Ya you should have called him out like 5 years ago.
Why doesn’t call out GSP?

LOL “I have no interest in fighting koscheck” I chuckled after I read that. Hughes is sort of a bully and knows koscheck is a bad match up for him. Kosheck is explosive like gsp as a wrestler, athletic and fast like gsp, koscheck is a way better striker than hughes, and kos is now a brown belt in bjj. Hughes really counts on his wrestling an he looked terrible against alves, his shots were slow and he didn’t look very impressive against serra, the fight could have gone either way. Wonder why hughes signed another 6 fight deal with the ufc? He should have quit while the going is good, end with a W and go back to what he supposedly loves his family and farm.

By the way I would love to see that fight, and actually root for hughes, I would laugh if he subbed kos or ko’d him.
by nathan on Sep 23, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions
Hate to break it to Matt but Kos is only like 5 years younger than him, hardly enough of a gap to call him a “kid.”
by Ixian on Sep 23, 2009 6:32 PM EDT reply actions
KOS and Swick are prolly calling him out because they think they can take him at this stage of his career.
They should put Swick v KOS, just to fuck with them, lol
by Guz on Sep 23, 2009 6:38 PM EDT reply actions
Hughes is 35 and kos is 31 soon to be 32 in november, ya hughes he’s a “kid”, just a shot obviously but we all know your scared, lol.

I lost the tiny amount of respect that existed after he called out Hughes. Koscheck would be a super heavy favorite in a fight with Hughes. He knows this and wants to take the easy fight to the title. What he should be doing is taking the fight that will challenge him and the super easy near gimme win*. But if that’s the route he wants to take then so be it, but it’s the reason he will never be a champion. He should be calling out Paulo Thiago or Thiago Silva to avenge his losses. Or maybe call out the champ, but a fight against Hughes would barely be a fight.
*Koscheck has the advantage in striking, the wrestling and submissions are equal, and koscheck has the tangibles in speed, strength, size, age, and even chin. I see no way Hughes has a chance in the fight except for a punchers chance.

I so dislike Hughes!
He IS just another BORING wrestler!
Kos on the other hand is more versatile and exciting to watch.
and Kos would destroy Hughes for sure.

Ha ha ha, Hughes is such a coward. He couldn’t even come up with an explanation for ducking Kos.
by Kuato on Sep 23, 2009 9:46 PM EDT reply actions
Thats hilarious he called him a kid. Kos is 31, Hughes is 35. He had no problem fighting Thiago who is 25, I don’t remember any kid comments then. Even fighting GSP, he’s 28. Sounds to me like Hughes is dodging.

after Koscheck wins a belt and clears out a division THEN he can start calling his next opponent out.
whether he can beat Hughes or not is beside the point. Kos is being a total jackass (again) and needs to STFU.
