The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10: Episode 2 recap and discussion

TUF10banner

Episode two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 10 is now underway and we start off with a shot of some tombstones, which I can only assume were put there to represent Rampage's UFC career. Speaking of fighters on life support, "special attraction" Kimbo Slice muses about his short term future as an Ultimate Fighter.

Roy Nelson wouldn't mind being the first guy to get his hands on Kimbo, who has the ground game of a newborn calf. Rampage admits he sees some of himself in Kimbo.

Considering Slice was knocked out by a marshmallow fade-away jab via Seth Petruzelli, I can only hope he's referring to his beard.

Team Rampage gets excited by Kimbo's progress during a crash course in grappling, apparently forgetting that Bas Rutten already tried to teach him a ground game that went Colonel Braddock during his fight with James Thompson back in Elite XC.

Team Rashad gets their own workout in and Coach Evans doesn't like that "Big Country" isn't playing by his rules or accepting constructive criticism. Nelson doesn't want anyone telling him what to do or how to train until the trainers remind him he was knocked out by Andrei Arlovski and that he should check himself.

It's fight selection time and Coach Rampage calls out Evans' number one pick James McSweeney and tries to clown him by calling him James McSwindle. Facing him will be "El Gigante," also known as Wes Shivers.

Star-divide

McSweeney gets his time in front of the camera and drops some background on his skill set and MMA comeuppance. He feels comfortable as a fighter at age 28 and thinks Shivers will be at a disadvantage because of his bulky size.

Rampage shows up and boots Team Evans from the gym because he doesn't want to be held up with any kind of Zen pow-wow that is vintage Greg Jackson. Evans won't just roll over so he tells Jackson to cool his jets during yet another verbal spat.

Wes Shivers reminisces about his NFL time with the Titans and Falcons and despite some serious injuries throughout his college career, thinks he's got a solid future in the fight game. Shivers also feels good about getting picked to fight so early and is banking on his power to overcome the skill of McSweeney.

Back at the house, Demico Rogers and Marcus Jones think McSweeney is in for a tough fight because as Shivers explains during a creepy third person voice-over, he's got nothing to go home to. It's beat McSweeney or bust. James thinks Shivers should go home and save himself a lot of pain.

Heavyweight elimination fight #2: James McSweeney (3-3) vs. Wes Shivers (2-0)

Round 1: Dana cameo! No glove touch. Shivers obviously learned from the Abe Wagner/John Madsen debacle. Shivers eats a low kick and rushes McSweeney, muscling him to the cage. Shivers forces a takedown. Shivers on top but looks lost until he gets an arm practically gift wrapped. He tries for a kimura but McSweeney uses the change in position to escape. McSweeney grazes with a head kick and then gets rewarded with an atomic nut mashing. Short recovery period and they resume. Shivers hulks up and swings like a gorilla. They hit the cage and break away. More punches from Shivers. McSweeney lunges and gets air. Two jabs land for McSweeney who also lands two hard low kicks. Then two more. Shivers is gassed and eats another leg kick. Superman punch by McSweeney is blocked. Some grotesque stand up on display. Action stalls until time winds down.

Round 2: McSweeney opens with a low kick. Shivers lunges with a right. Low kick lands for McSweeney. Shivers rushes but loses the takedown. He's spent and has the reaction time of a Compaq 386. McSweeny kicks but gets his leg caught and Shivers flops down on top of him, too comatose to use the position for any offense. Shivers squats over him like he's taking a dump and can't figure out how to use a flailing arm or exposed neck to perform any kind of submission attempt. McSweeney escapes and they go back to the bad striking. Coach Evans is screaming his head off because McSweeney is not capitalizing on the gassed Shivers. This fight is a train wreck. Suddenly heavyweight TUF seasons are an endangered species. Rashad changes his strategy and yells "Please, James, please!" They exchange low kicks. Shivers eats a punch and then a kick and shoots but falls into a guillotine. McSweeney has it locked in but is too exhausted to finish it. Shivers escapes and the round ends with him on top, gently draping his elbow across McSweeney's face. Pitiful.

Mercifully, we go to a decision. Referee Steve Mazzagatti lauds their performance as "an awesome fight." I guess he was watching the replay of Clay Guida vs. Diego Sanchez from last June in between rounds.

James McSweeney defeats Wes Shivers via majority decision.

McSweeney lets out a "YEAH!" then collapses in the dressing room. This was their number one pick?

Afterward Shivers and Team Rampage mope over the loss. With Team Evans now in control, the question remains: How long until they pick Kimbo Slice to fight? Uh, right away! And they pick Roy Nelson to do the dirty work!

Stay tuned next week for the moment of truth! See you in seven!

no one can say there protecting kimbo now, so far i haven’t seen one guy fight that could beat nelson so i would say kimbo is getting the toughest guy in the house. i could have seen kimbo beating the 3 of the four fighters that have fought already and made it down the road a bit for this match up this fight was even considered before for a headliner with kimbo and they avoided nelson back than smartly.this would give kimbo some credit if he could win it.

by roy on Sep 23, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

If the roy from the monson fight shows up, then Kimbo’s got a chance. Let’s just hope that he just pulls him into his guard and gets it done quick. It would be embarrassing for Big Country if he doesn’t put him away in the first.

If that dude Shivers can develop strong cardio and sharpen his skills, he could have a future. The guy is HUge, and tough as nails.

I also think McSweeny could have a great shot at winning if it was a LHW version of TUF. He is just too small for these big boys but his striking is entertaining. Reach disadvantage hurt him a lot!

Rampage is so sTUPID. He needed to have Kimbo fight tonight while he had control of the match ups. I will be really impressed if Kimbo ko’ed Nelson!

by john G on Sep 24, 2009 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Roy Nelson is a joke. Man is the best guy in the house and all he is worried about is getting a fight with Kimbo? After watching that piece of lard argue every single little issue and then call himself a master made me want to vomit. I sincerly hope Kimbo ko’s him in one punch and I’m definetly not a Kimbo Slice fan. Even if Kimbo loses this match what does that prove? Nelson just lays on fighters and wears them out by muffling their mouth with his stomach hairs, that won’t help to prove where Kimbo stands in the UFC. Knowing Rampage and Rashad won’t be fighting at the end of this and Roy Nelson will probably win TUF makes this season extremely hard to watch… I don’t remember anyone mentioning this but Rampage is hurting TUF sales by claiming he won’t be fighting Rashad now, he really is a destructive pr force.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2009 7:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh I always wanted to say that Rampage is garbage as a coach. The man just gave two of his men losses without even thinking about them. He’s playing this like its some sort of game between him and Rashad and its not. This garbage needs to stop between having fighters coach on TUF as rivals because they end up trying to fight each other when the point of the show is for the fighters to get their best shot at joining the UFC ranks. So that said you should focus fully on the fighters training and whats best for that specific fighter and not whats best for you to try and break the other coach mentally. Mcsweeny didn’t deserve the win on that fight, it should have went to the juganaught or it should have went to a third round. If Rampage had choose anyone else for that goliath to face he would have won and he’d be in the next round along with a quality win on Rampages team. Instead Rampage is an idiot and he left Kimbo and his goliath hanging and he’s going to be officially the first coach to have all of his fighters lose. He would be better suited being a comedian than a coach and he’s giving wolfslair a bad name.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Well said Cogito the only man I think Rampage is worried about is his man Kimbo the rest he could care less about.

by Puck Head on Sep 24, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

great posts Cogito. I love Rampage, but cant disagree with a word you posted!…

and you were right on about Nelson to. He really pissed me off last night. I hope Kimbo Knocks him into Jenny Craig’s office!

Great point as well about UF and how it shouldnt have coaches that will fight at the end of the season!

by john G on Sep 24, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Rashad is doing a great job as a coach. He brought in Greg Jackson, picked his own guys first, and went with the most obvious choice to beat Rampage’s new buddy. Rampage on the other hand is mailing it in like Ken Shamrock did against Tito.

So far the fights have been Terrible. I agree that last nights fight should have went to a 3rd round, but was glad that I didn’t have to see it. Shivers was completely out of gas, and McSweeney was only on fumes. They both may have had heart attacks if it went another five. This fight did the impossible, and was actually worse than the first fight.

by naturalshadow on Sep 24, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought that both of the fighters show’d the normal TUF lack of technique and experience. The Rashad season of HW’s didn’t show so much gassing but then again the majority of those fighters were just LHW’s who didn’t cut and were not true heavies. As for these two, pretty sad for a first pick. WES WON THE FIGHT!! sloppy and painful to watch but he won that fight nonetheless and to say 20 18 is just criminal

by getrawbc on Sep 24, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

These first two fights of this season are two of the worst TUF fights i’ve ever seen. It’s bordering on embarrasing. They should consider cutting this show down to 1 season per year, the talent is becoming extremely watered down……i’d rather see another WW or LW season after watching these two fights, they were horrible. I hope it gets better…..

by kg on Sep 24, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Rant alert. This is an absolutely sorry-ass, pathetic debacle! So far, these guys are a complete joke. Serious fans of the sport are not laughing however. How on earth can supposed “fighters”, intent on making a living on the biggest MMA stage and appearing on national TV no less, show up with a cardio base Rosanne Barr would find deficient? Truly epic embarrasment! Shivers was so gassed I honestly thought he’d pass out and McSweeney was still too tired and afraid to do anything about it. I wanted a third round because I’m completely convinced MMA history would have been made. Both guys would have thrown in the towel.

Spoiler alert. Expect a lot more of this sort of sorry stuff as the show continues as the VAST MAJORITY of these bums appear to be in at least as poor of condition if not worse. Future HW contenders?? More like future victims of cardiac arrest. We may see a few highlight reel finishes as the show progresses, but it’s only because the most of the cast has no business being there.

LoL. Spot on.

by Human on Sep 24, 2009 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree, I do martial arts (Jukite Jujitsu) and played College football as a D-Lineman so I am not small by any means and this sh!t is tiring. Watch past seasons with much smaller fighters, they get gassed well these guys got a little more gassed and it makes sense. They are also not fighting like a real UFC fighter would with peaking and having a week off before a fight. These guys bodies are already worn on by fight time so I don’t think these guys came in totally out of shape, I just think it is the nature of the beast.

by Edgecrusher71 on Sep 24, 2009 1:38 AM EDT up reply actions

The guy was gassed in less than a minute. A wrestler trains weekly and wrestles weekly, and they can easily last three three minute rounds. A football player is trained to last an entire game. These guys are coming in here thinking their size or experience is going to benifit them. We have a bunch of premaddonas on this show who all think their the sh!t. Roy Nelson won’t even listen to his coaches. This football player obviously thought his reach and strength would win here and he just put his hands on his hips and took breaks through out the fight. I’ve never seen anything like that even in local events. I couldn’t believe Sweeny wouldn’t move, Rashad was literally crying fom his corner for him to attack because he thought Sweeny was losing the fight. I personally would not have been able to celebrate that win, I would have been embarrassed to say that was me fighting and realized I need to focus much much more. I’m not saying Sweeny is a bad fighter because that was a monster he was fighting, but he needs to focus and be more humble, going in with a big head leaves your opponent with a large target to hit.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2009 7:26 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s funny because Sweeny looked just as tired and so did former Wrestling nation champ last week. It was just on the ground the whole time so he couldn’t put his hands on his legs. But he was just as tired. I get so tired of people who have never been in there shoes (and I am assuming here but pretty safely I bet) where you have been training your ass off and then have to fight the next day or two and on top of that your nerves can gas you real quick. Yes, I was laughing at Shivers putting his hands on his knees and how tired both guys were but I can’t fault him given the situation.

by Edgecrusher71 on Sep 24, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey man, don’t think I’m an uneducated keyboard warrior. I wrestled for four years (two in college), did two years of hs football (not as demanding I know), and was in Rugby for an additional five, I’ve fought two local MMA matches here in wisconsin and I completely understand the nerves and everything can get to you. and training has its punishment if you don’t do it correctly but imo taking a rest like that is unacceptable. You can rest by circling your opponent or holding him in the clinch, ect. but just sitting there like you both agreed to a time out? When one fighter is clearly hanging his jaw and his hands, asking to be knocked out and you sit on your hind legs and wait to catch your own breath. Thats not how you impress dana, the fans, or prove your ready for the big leagues. especially when you talk into a camera and talk about how much experience you have.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Ditto here. I understand the conditioning needed for combat sports based on FIRST-HAND experience. Most of these guys are in sorry shape. It is inexcusable for “athletes” supposedly intent on making this a career and appearing on national TV. I see very little drive and discipline. Yes…nerves can play a factor, but so far ALL 4 guys who have fought have been noticably gassed within 2 minutes of the 1st round. This means zero cardio PLAIN AND SIMPLE! Several others appear to be even more poorly conditioned, based on the training footage shown. I’m sorry to be so blunt, but so far this is a flat-out BUMFEST, and I’ve seen no indication of a fighter that could make a bent in the HW division. Shoot…if half these guys got remotely in shape, they wouldn’t be HW’s.

by BudsyKind on Sep 24, 2009 7:40 AM EDT up reply actions

first round was close, there’s no way in hell mcsweeney won the second round. shivers was dog tired and still more aggressive.

by Michael on Sep 24, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

if roy has any guts at all he’ll stand and bang with kimbo. if he uses ground and pound or jits to beat kimbo, fine, good for him, but i better not hear any shit talking if that’s the only way he can beat kimbo. saying a grappler/wrestler can beat kimbo using those specific techniques is like duhhhhhhhhhh!!! NO SHIT!!! that would’ve been like saying cael sanderson would win an amatuer wrestling match with mike tyson! pretty much a no-brainer there. but if this is how roy beats kimbo, then he’ll have NO right to think he’s just ‘made a statement’ or ‘sent a message’!! we all know u can out fat/grapple him roy, u wanna make a name for urself and REALLY do something, Knock Kimbo Out!!!

by deuce 4 on Sep 24, 2009 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

If Roy tries to stand and bang with Kimbo then he’s an idiot. Then again this is the same guy who thinks that he’s above the Jackson camp so he clearly is dumb. However in MMA the whole point is to be as well rounded as possible, so you can beat your opponents using your strengths and their weaknesses to your advantage. If someone has no ground game then you exploit that in the fight, trying to KO someone like Kimbo when you are a very good grappler is stupid, it doesn’t matter how you win but that you win period. This isn’t K-1 or boxing, you can use grappling so a quick submission win would be smart and impressive for Roy, he doesn’t need to stand and trade looking for the KO because all that proves is that he can’t startegise effectively.

by D-RawK on Sep 23, 2009 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

Did McSweeney win that fight, or did Shivers lose it by standing around with his hands on his hips? I thought when they actually engaged Shivers definitely got the better of McSweeney.

by PW on Sep 23, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

i thought the same thing round 1 for shivers for sure and the 2nd was close but how did mcsweeney win that fight?

by roy on Sep 23, 2009 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah Shivers got robbed. i don’t see how they could give that fight to McSweeney, considering he ran away from Wes most of the fight. Terrible cardio from both of them though. just an example of how terrible cardio can ruin a good fight.

by kitsunex on Sep 24, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Shivers had two take downs to none and got the better of the exchanges and did more damage. Both were tired but Shivers looked a lot more tired. I really thought Shivers did enough to win.

by Kdog on Sep 24, 2009 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah this is first case where it seems the judges didn’t count the takedowns. why don’t they judge like that when Clay Guida gets in the cage?

by kitsunex on Sep 24, 2009 2:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Shivers didn’t just get takedowns; he actually had dominant positions, half-guard in the first round and full mount in the second. If he wasn’t wheezing like an 80-year-old with emphysema he would have pounded McWeeney into the ground.

by PW on Sep 24, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Both these dudes are fought like hot garbage. Shivers is more skillful, has the size/reach advantage and gases 3 minutes in. McSweeney is so skill-less is can’t take advantage of it. His has no striking! Not a combo to be seen. All he can do is throw a kick. WTF? He’s flailing around like when you press the wrong button playing street fighter.

by Jas on Sep 23, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo may lose but you would think that there would be more interviews with big country since the show.. I saw him at the expo but no where else. I have seen other fighters blogging for other sites and seen interviews with guys but nothing out of Country.. I want Country to win this thing but it is not adding up. They have hardly even focused on him..

by lance on Sep 23, 2009 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I know what happens, but use your head, Kimbo is doing all the PR because he’s the only guy all the casual fans know, nothing more. Don’’t read too much into it. Forrest had no chance at beating Silva, but he hyped the fight because TUF fans know him and he speaks english. I could keep going with examples, but anyone with a brain already gets it!

by kevin on Sep 24, 2009 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I would suspect that since the season has already wrapped and the finalists are to be training for the finale. The biggest camp of their careers wouldn’t leave much time for PR and media gauntlets.

They can edit it to where you do not know if they are fighting in order..They could have had a show next week based on stuff in the house. Had to have been the worst tuf fight I’ve ever seen. Mcsweeney builds himself up to be a feared kickboxer and gets thrown around the ring for the whole first and only lands 2 good shots in the second which he wasn’t able to capitalize on. Kicking off the season with 2 shitty fights so far, hope it takes a turn for the better. Also am I mistaken or is that kimbo landing a pretty clean shot on nelson in the preview for next weeks episode? I truly hope kimbo dominates nelson, that would be too epic. people would go berserk, the seasons favorite getting beat by the guy everyone loves to call a can.

McSweeney’s decision over Shivers is just another example of Dana White tring to capture the UK crowd. I guess McSweeney is Dana’s new UK boy since his last one Bisbing got his ars whooped.

by tDog on Sep 23, 2009 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

After that fight I never want to see McSweeney fight again, he was close to pulling a Kalib Starnes against a gassed opponent, literally running away in the first round then standing around doing nothing against someone so tired he was on the verge of collapsing in the second. McSweeney was never a draw over here, he lost to the likes of Al-Turk and Grove so he clearly is a mediocre HW who only got on the show because he’s Rashad’s mate. Nothing to do with breaking the UK market, unless the UFC plans a card full of gypos with Alex Reid headlining and this clown in the co-main event.

NFL guys aren’t used to moving longer than ten seconds at a time. It’s not clear how often these guys get to train, but they need to do two a days at the very least, one session for technique, the other for conditioning.

I predict Kimbo by KO next week BECAUSE they showed Roy’s coaches getting on him about learning new techniques because they don’t want him to get hurt – i.e. “you don’t want to get KOed badly again like what happened with Arlovski.”

Pathetic. TUF is getting worse each season.

by LLC on Sep 23, 2009 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

What they have to stop doing is stop looking for personalities and look for fighters. That was the difference between the first few and the last few. Yeah you had some personalities that were entertaining (ie. Chris Leben) but overall the guys were there to fight and there was not so much dick swiniging(I am ko you-no I’ll kick your ass-Dude I won 952 street fights last month and did it from a wheel chair BS) in previous seasons. The show took hit an all time low with Junie Clowning! I only put it on for the fighting parts now. I used to look foward to TUF. The fiighters examplified being mmartists and the respect that the old school guys had for the sport and each other. Wes Simms says the show goes crazy by week 3 or 4, but at least up to know the only big mouths and bickering have been btwn the coaches. Personally the only 2 guys I think that could even make any impact on the UFC is Roy or Kimbo and it is a shame that one of them will be out after next week. I am also amazed that alot of these guys were pro athletes (NFL super tiring linemen) and have the cardio of a 3 pack a day smoker. Hopefully it is more the adrenalin dump but wow is all I have to say!

any reason for the blood stains on the mat during the fight? They using the same mat for all the fights and keeping the stains for effect?

TUF fights are pretty much back-to-back. I’m assuming the Shivers fight was no more than one or two days after the Abe bloodbath.

thought the same thing

by shane on Sep 23, 2009 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

WTF that was their number one pick? Shivers I can understand as an NFL import but McSweeney — coming out of Team Jackson — should be ashamed of that performance.

Totally agree, that was an horrible performance.

thank you Jesse for the first good comment of this thread. That was a pathetic display and really makes me question GREG JACKSON!!!!!

by kevin on Sep 24, 2009 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Both fighters should have been in better shape. That said, I thought Shivers lost simply because he would do nothing for almost a minute and still couldn’t get his wind back. The dude couldn’t move. At one point he actually sat down on the fence with his arm on the top like he was getting into a Lazy Boy.

Terrible fight

Cecil Peoples has NO BUSINESS scoreing mma fights. taht guy is a disgrace. I follow fights that he SCORES VERY closely. He is CONSISTANTLY the guy that makes a unanimous decision a spilt decision. He always scores it opposite of the 2 otehr judges. That guy is a moron

by fightfan on Sep 24, 2009 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought for sure when they said they weren’t having a 3rd round that Wes won. 2 of the judges had it 20-18 for Mcsweeney. What?!! I’m watching it again now while posting just to make sure I didn’t miss something. McSweeney had good leg kicks, but that was about it. Surprised about both of these guys conditioning, but especially McSweeney’s. Then again, it gives me hope since I almost passed out a couple of weeks ago when I went jogging for the first time in several months. BTW, can’t the ufc afford to change the mat for each match? What was up with all the old blood stains?

by wannnabe on Sep 23, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow that was unbelievable 20-18 seriously. No way dude has his back and can not win a round. BTW the worst mma fight ever I do believe. How about we find people who don’t suck for next season.

That was an awful showing by McSweeney, and I would have given it to Wes. But damn. Cardio guys. Rashad’s boy looked like he knew how to throw some techniques for that minute before he gassed out.

I don’t know anything, but I am glad they are getting to Kimbo next week, and I hope he beats that guy. What a tool he is:

Rashad: “Every time anyone tries to tell you something, you have a rebuttal…”

Biscuits: “No! I…”

Ok worst fight ever in TUF history… They can’t go for 1 round without dying of exhaustion. It was pathetic but if you ask me Shivers got robbed. I thought he CLEARLY did more then Rashads little golden boy who looks TERRIBLE…

by IrishMikey on Sep 23, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

Tonight had one of the worst fights on TUF in awhile. I guess it could have been worse if we had two wrestlers that utilize “Lay and Pray” . I can’t remember too many fights where BOTH fighters stood there in the center of the ring with their hands down bent over resting for extended periods in the middle of the fight. There were a few times where they were throwing punches and for a second I thought they were trying to high five each other.

Take a look at that Wes dude. He is *&^% HUGE. It’s not like he is out of shape, he is very muscular and fit but it takes allot of oxygen to operate a big ass structure like that. It makes you wonder how biggens like Brock Lesnar can have such stamina. These two guys didn’t have any. I am not sure what the other guys excuse is. I mean he is a big guy too but come on. When is the last time you saw an actual fight on a UFC PPV where two fighters gassed that bad?

Rampage Jackson is a good fighter, but he is a shitty coach (he lost a shitload on the first season he coached too) and an even shittier match maker. Last week was a better example of a mismatch. This time around, I think it wasn’t as much of a mismatch as it was a bad move. He knew Kimbo Slice was a target, if he really wanted him to succeed then he should have used his ability to pick the fight and put Kimbo up against one of their weaker fighters with no ground game. Now he is going to go up against the most experienced guy on the entire show in the former IFL heavyweight champ. Big Country Nelson.

To say I don’t think Kimbo will win is an understatement. If Kimbo was going up against that dude Rampaged called “titties” or a couple of the other inexperienced guys I would say he may have a chance, but I think he is doomed. We will see! Anyone can get caught. Kimbo defiantly will have the better cardio of the two and that could make the difference.

One thing is for sure, a big dog got knocked out of the running today and it looks like next week will also be the end for one of the two biggest draws this season. That’s why they showed the fight pick at the end of this show instead of the beginning of the next like they normally do. To build it but will ensure maximum ratings.

I know this season is different than the last couple in that its all one weight class and no one had to fight to get into the house but it doesn’t seem like the format change stops there. They usually show more of them in the house, the fighters weighing in for the fight, Dana didn’t attending the fight selection, etc.. One thing that really pisses me off is I DVR the show and watch it about a half after or so into it so I can skip commercials. They are doing some REALLY goofy shit and putting a 30 sec. clip of the show in the middle of the commercials. Anyone else notice this?? If you skip through it and go to the long segment, you miss out. So to not miss anything, I have to fast forward, stop, watch 30 sec clip, fast forward again through another commercial and then onto the next segment. Sounds petty, but that *&^% sucks!!

One cool thing I dig is that on Mondays on Spike.com, they have a 10 minute or so show with the fighters from that previous episode and Amir doing interviews and answering fans e-mails about that fight.

by Jason on Sep 24, 2009 12:07 AM EDT reply actions

by Jason on Sep 24, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know why people are suprised by these heavyweights gassing and having horrible technique. It happens everytime there are heavyweights, and is my main reason for liking the smaller weight fighters better. They seem to have more skill and cardio then the freak HWs. I have been dreading this season since they announced it. I do hope Big Country wins next week though…win one for the fat guys!!!

by MM_Eh on Sep 24, 2009 12:17 AM EDT reply actions

1st rd: both grappling and striking dominated by Shivers
2nd rd: Shivers did gas and got stuned at the end of the round by a good hand by McSweeney but the briton didnt show enough heart to even get a 3rd round, fight should’ve gone to Wes.
They all suck this season, these clumsy giants are just sitting ducks for the animal Kimbo Slice

I enjoyed reading the play by play—especially the part about Shivers being too comatose to take advantage of being on top and gently draping his elbow across McSweeny’s face at the end.

But I’m surprised there is no comment by Jesse Holland on the decision. Is Dana White or the UFC paying you to stay mum on this?

Why isn’t Dana or the judges going to jail for breaking some sort of Nevada law—like mugging Shivers? Yah I know, Shivers shouldn’t have let it gone to the judges—but what fight were they watching?

I actually thought McSweeny would have done better going in—but Shivers losing like that just isn’t right. Holland’s own blow by blow fight commentary has Shivers winning all the exchanges—except the 2 blows at the end. What about octagon control? I thought McSweeny was going to pull a hammy backpedaling and running away as fast as he did. No wonder Shivers was so gassed—I would be too chasing a guy for 10 minutes.

You guys that call yourselves MMA fans need to get on Twitter and tell White to be accountable for this decision—he’s @DanaWhite on Twitter. How could 2 judges have Shivers losing 20-18??? This smacks of the old fixes they had in boxing.

If White doesn’t address this he needs to resign or retire. I know, not gonna happen. When you get big and fat, screw the fans.

So what do you think? Was White on LSD, the judges on crack and hungover, or both?

by Mike Patty on Sep 24, 2009 1:36 AM EDT reply actions

I agree, in my opinion shivers clearly won that fight. Ii don’t understand what McSweeney did to come close to winning either round. That being said, I can’t feel too badly for a guy that bent over and put his hands on his knees for 5-10 seconds in the middle of a round losing a decision although its just as bad that the other guy stood there and watched him when he was basically inviting him to knock him out.

by GSP4Prez on Sep 24, 2009 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

both guys looed bad tonight looks like the kimbo rumor is true
that he will face roy nelson and get knocked out

I seriously don’t think Mcswindle won that fight. Shivers wasn’t anything great but he didn’t lose.

by Jackhole on Sep 24, 2009 2:10 AM EDT reply actions

I think this is a great match up for both guys. Roy is probably the more well rounded fighter but it sure looks like he wants to keep it standing with Kimbo. That would be a mistake. It gives Kimbo a punchers chance.

I really like Rashad’s coaching style he really gets into the mental aspect but Rampage just seems hes there to joke around.

by Nini on Sep 24, 2009 3:06 AM EDT reply actions

I think Rampage is a naturally funny, happy go lucky guy. I dont think its his intention to “be funny”. I think he genuinely wants his guys to win. I just don’t think he has the coaching skills of Rashad or knows how to “teach” well. In the fight a week ago, he kept yelling over and over for his guy to get up…just get up, get up, get up—not HOW to get up, like kick off with your feet, or reverse him, or whatevere. He didn’t tell the figher anything technical that would help him, like “grab his right leg”. I think it’s because Rampage just fights and doesnt worry about all the details, like “grab his left wrist with your right hand” to do a kimora or whatever, he just figures a guy knows how to do it or is able to. I’m not sure how he is in practice, but during matches, it seems he hasn’t been able to give the best technical advice—not because he doesn’t want to—just because from a technical coaching perspective, for whatever reason, he isn’t able to articulate instructions like other coaches.

But I still love him anyway :)

by Franchise on Sep 24, 2009 10:15 AM EDT reply actions

You are trying to get into the UFC and you gas so bad that you can’t even raise your hands to at least look like you are trying to fight. That was the MOST pathetic display of lack of cardio I have ever seen but even more was the fact that he didn’t try and hide it at all. He claims to be coming into this competition going for broke and that’s the performance he gives?? No wonder why the dude didn’t make it in football. If I was Dana, I would have stopped the fight and kicked that POS off the show..

by sudnvictory on Sep 29, 2009 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

So, any predictions on the Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Big Country Nelson? If you search on youtube, you can find videos of Kimbo fighting in backyards, bareknuckled…kinda crazy. I also found a couple videos of Roy Nelson wrestling at Grapplers Quest. If nelson can get Kimbo down and keep him there, that’s his best shot.

If they standup, I’ll have to give the edge to Kimbo. I’m wondering with all the hype if Kimbo is feeling any pressure. Anyone see on week one, where they were picking teams, and Rampage picked that white guy that started goofing off and saying how come I didn’t get picked up front with Kimbo? Then he goes up by Kimbo and kinda puts his arm around him, and Kimbo is like, we’re gonna be ok—like he was looking to this goofy white kid for reassurance.

So I’m not sure if Kimbo was sure he should be there. After watching those youtube videos, he’s just as legit as any of those guys. But man the pressure has got to be on him…

So I’m taking Kimbo. Who are you taking?

by Mike Patty on Sep 29, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

Ok,
What is Rampage doing going to Burger King right before his boy fights? I’m one of Rampage’s biggest fan…but what was he thinking??

Then he didn’t even go help his guy when he lost—Rampage comon dude.
