Monday morning scrap: UFC 103, FN 19 and TUF 10 week in review

Fans of mixed martial arts were once again treated to an action-packed week chock full of fights thanks to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and its triple header over the past few days.

UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" went down from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, marking the return of Vitor Belfort to the ranks of UFC contenders as he knocked out former 185-pound champ Rich Franklin.

Earlier in the week, the UFC gave us back-to-back programming on Spike TV featuring Fight Night 19 and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10.

As expected, millions tuned in to see Kimbo Slice make his much-anticipated TUF debut -- but not before up-and-coming stars Nate Diaz, Gray Maynard and Carlos Condit put on a show at Fight Night 19.

In cased you missed any or all of it — or just want to keep the discussion alive — below are links to all the major storylines coming out of each event.

cool idea mania, I like the recap!
I just finished watching all the fights sat night, overall it looks like it was a decent event! I got a few texts from guys asking me who Vitor is, and I’m glad he came out looking impressive! I’ve been a Vitor fan for years and think that the newer fans will come to like watching him figt!
He is the ONLY guy at MW that I wanna see fight Silva at this point! That very well could challenge Penn/Sanchez for (title) fight of the year!

It was a great night of action with tons of under card fights. Awesome how everyone of the main cards were KO or TKO’s. Yes Kev your boy Vitor was impressive, that punch barley clipped Franklin and dropped him. I got to hang out with Koscheck and Swick at their after party, they were both awesome. Koscheck was actually pretty cool. I did ask him if he was considering or ever thought about cutting to 155 and he said he is too heavy and no way could he cut down to 155 to go to light weight

I don’t know.. Vitor had a hard time making 195, what kind of circus would surround his attempt to make 185. i don’t want to see a wasted fight with Silva if he’s not gonna make weight.

My BIG WINNERS from last week include

Efrain – I think a lot of people were shocked at this result as most of the hype during the show went Nover’s way

Vitor – Might have the power AND accuracy to beat Andy

Nate – big win after taking some big shots to get back in the win column

Condit AND Ellenburger – Carlos was lucky to steal the 2nd rnd as it was VERY close on my cards

KOS – only for calling out Hughes…now one of them will lose for sure

Rick Story – very impressive performance

BIG Losers include

CC AND Trigg – the game has changed and its time to move on…Trigg’s stoppage was questionable in Slow-MO but not watching it live imo

Rich – back to the drawing board as a title shot looks all but gone now

Quarry – GREAT come-back win but proved to me that he’ll be more of a gate-keeping punching bag then any kind of a contender

Don’t forget about Daley as a big winner and Kapmann as a big loser. What the hell was he thinking? Even his corner was screaming at him to take the fight to the ground immediatly. He definatly overlooked Daley.

I was very happy for Vitor and can’t wait for his fight with Anderson. And Dana should put Hendo/Nate on the same card.

by BNF on Sep 21, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, Vitor/Anderson has fight of year potential along with Penn/Sanchez. I’m really looking forward to it, been a Vitor fan forever and Silva is one of my favorites!

Finally I have no rebuttle for a Kevin reply. 100% in agreement!!!

Can Vitor revenge his loss to Henderson? I still feel Henderson deserves the next shot but I wouldn’t mind seeing a Henderson vs. Belfort fight and put Nate against Wandy for the second chance?

vitor vs. Anderson is the only middleweight fight I want to see Anderson in. Other then Vitor, I have ZERO desire to see him fight ANYONE at middleweight!

After years of being verbally abused by everyone on this site, everytime I mentioned Semtex’s name, finally you haters understand what I have been raving about. His actual performance was awesome, but more impressively is:
That he stepped up on short notice and beat a top 10 welterweight (and former top 10 middleweight). What impressed me even more was the way he handled his Octagon debut, on the main card of a ppv, and was able to fight up to his potential! This kid is a stud!! When all you bandwagon fockers hop on his bandwagon….Just remember who CREATED the Semtex Warwagon…your boy, JOhn G!!!!!! Takedown defense is the easiest thing to improve on. RIGHT NOW, there arent too many WW in the world that can trade leather with Semtex! I would love to see him beat the kilt off of Marcus Davis! lol I cant believe I got Semtex as a +300 dog! FYI: Its sad to see people diminish his win, by saying that Kampman isnt very good. Martin is a top WW, I just knew that Semtex had the perfect skilll set to beat him! Instead of giving Semtex his props, you got guys like Kevin, who are just talking trash about Kampman!

Next up for Semtex is another impressive KO upset over Mike Swick!

Big props to Efrain. I didnt expect him to improve this much. The kid has a bright future in the UFC’s lightweight division and Cole is no slouch! That was a HUGE win to keep his undefeated record intact!

Puckhead: I think Vitor would beat Henderson today. When Hendo beat him that was the mentally broken version of Vitor. that fight took place when Vitor was in a terrible Funk. I would be curioous to see a rematch of that fight now that both fighters are on top of their game!

john, I gave you props in another thread, you must be too busy writing the same book over and over about fedor, rampage and patting yourself on the back to notice! I wasn’t bashind Kampman, (learn to comprehend what you read), I was saying it’s funny all the people that believed he was a contender. I’ve agreed with you Semtex is the real deal for a while now, but GSP would take him down and beat him in the 1st round, so what exact;y is your point? GSP (or any other ground fighter/wrestler) beats Semtex fairly easily! He’s a legit striker, period!

by kevin on Sep 21, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John I got to say that I was one of the guys that were making fun of ya with Semtex. But I changed my mind an picked him last Saturday b/c of Kampmann style(and I thought that nobody picked him, so I did). He might be able to get thru Swick with another quick upset, but I still believe that he’s a Sokojou and he will get exposed soon. Props to ya but, I still say that he’s got a long way to go if he want to be able to hang with the top 3 of the division.

John it seems like all your posts are short novels.

Totally agree with kev!

by Alpha Male on Sep 21, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you develope good takedown defense, being a great striker can take you a long way.

Kev: who the fock you think you are talking to? The kettle calling the pot black! hahahaha . You are the KING of patting yourself on the back! I may pat myself on the back, but someone has to, considering the zillions of Hate comments I get thrown my way from week to week around here.

Stop comparing every single young WW fighter to GSP. Guess what? NO one at WW has a shot against GSP…so should all of the WW in the world just quit mma because they cant beat GSP. Fock would you even compare SEmtex to Gsp for? I am not a fan of Kampman at all, but the man was booked for a #1 contender fight before Swick got hurt. The man is a top WW, getting KO’ed by one of the best strikers at that weight doesnt change that!!

why would you even utter Semtex’s name in the same sentence as GSP? and I am sick of hearing people bash this young man because he got submitted by Jake Sheilds! Hello! Jake Sheilds in one of the top grapplers in the Welterweight division…let the kid grow, before you start mentioning him and comparing him with GSP!!!!

by john G on Sep 21, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and thats coming from someone who doesn’t care for GSP… but he’s UNSTOPPABLE at WW! I’m not interested in having him fight anyone except Nick Diaz at WW, not saying Nick would win, but it (in my opinion) is the best fight available at ww

LOL frosnt! I agree. They’re so long these days, that I don’t even read them anymore.

by LJ on Sep 21, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

UMM John, as a fan of all sports, I do this crazy thing, comparing guys/teams to the best to gauge their level. Thats how things are done! Example, can the Texans beat the steelers? No, so they aren’t a super bowl caliber team. Can Hendo or Marqurdt give Silva a fight? N, so I’d rather see Vitor fight them. now I’ll put it simply for you:
CAN ANY WW HANG WITH GSP… NO! so he needs to move up or other WW’s need to step their game up!
I pat myself on the back (jokingly) and have others agree or disagree with me, you on the other hand get “hated” on because you repeat the same thing in no less than 1000 words until you have someone agree with you or are right! I have no problem admitting when you’re right and can remember a time when it was often, but now your posts are so long and diluted that they are hard to read, and when you continuously hammer home points like “rampage shouldn’t fight in his home town” or “I hate Frank Mir”
it gets old! Yes Nog was sick and yes Mir won, it’s a fact… and I’m a fan of both and would love to see a rematch!
Dana set up a fight in memphis for Rampage and to coincide with the end of TUF (it wasn’t coincidence), so yes Rampage kinda bit the hand that feeds him!
These are simple FACTS that a retard could understand! It’s not the point that it’s good for Rampage that he’s in a movie, I think it’s good for ANYONE to broaden their money making capabilities… as long as it doesn’t interfere with numero uno which in this case is mma!

I was at a bar with some UFC newbies who didn’t even know Vitor. I tried to explain that some of his losses came from Tito, Randy, and Chuck, when all three were in their prime but they still thought Franklin was going to beat him. I was disgruntle about their lack of mma knowledge and decided to make a bet. 75 dollars later they guys are like how did you know that? I said if you want to know who is who and what is going on in the sport mma mania. lol

A lot of people here were ridin Rich too. I find it humorous when people can’t see such obvious results – I am looking at all you people who were talkin about forrest using his weight and “underrated” ground game on silva.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 21, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why is that NNR I myself thought Franklin had a chance yes Belfort has deadly strikes and Franklin was stupid to try and box with him as Franklin has a great all around game he is not the best at any one phase but he is pretty good at every phase of MMA. As Belfort had a close fight with Henderson and lost as Franklin did to in a close one as I seen both those fights as most long time UFC fans also seen him fight Tito and couture.

by Puck Head on Sep 21, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats exactly franklin’s problem, he is not great in any one area, he doesnt really have knockout power, his striking is decent, not phenomenal, his ground game is okay, but whens the last time he subbed anyone? hes just like forrest griffin, if he doesnt overpower his opponnets with his size/cardio he is not going to win… i seriously doubt we will ever see franklin or forrest hold a title ever again

by brendan on Sep 21, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Vitor only has problems against guys that can take him down and wear him out. Standing, his speed counts above everything. Rich doesn’t have a good chin and doesn’t know how to survive flurries when he’s hurt. His slow and telegraphed loopy punches vs vitor’s straight punches fast hands only lead to one outcome. Also Rich’s power is ridiculously overrated due to that Quarry KO. Finally vitor played it slow causing him to throw out his plan coz i bet anything rich anticipated a fast start. If it’s any consolation though rich never stood a chance coz his takedown game is nothing special and he doesn’t close distance well. He’s also not that imposing on the ground so he didn’t have any tools to deal with vitor.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 21, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree NNR. Rich didn’t had enough tools to deal with vitor.

by Alpha Male on Sep 21, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I believed in Vitor as stylistically Franklin was a good fight for him, until the weigh-ins then panicked after he struggled with the weight, but still hoped that he could get the quick KO win and Vitor did everyone proud, great performance by him.

Forrest was always going to get smashed by Andy, anyone who fought otherwise ended up looking like a muppet.

i did horrible on my bets this weekend.. i lost on all 5 main card fights, and only won off two prelim fights..

by stinky~fingers on Sep 21, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thats why I stopped betting mma! although I lost 5 units on NFL and got my QQ KO’d by AK on sat and JJ KO’d by KK on sunday in my poker tournament! Got my final blow to a set of 6’s (I had) and an all in call on a draw…DONKEY!!!

by d*locc on Sep 21, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree dude, the daley fight was brilliant, as was the vitor fight so no idea why people where booing, but u can bet a few more dominant wins for both these guys and the casual fans will be humping the back of these guys legs like a dog at a cocktail party

anyways reckon daley vs swick for No1 contender spot at xmas show, then winner gets gsp april or may hopefully

by CoN'r on Sep 21, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Awful fans, it’s very disresectful to boo fighters like that, unless they do a Kalib Starnes or show a lot of disrespect before/after the fight then you should never boo them. Pathetic to be honest.
