UFC Quick Quote: Junior Dos Santos is now a senior ranking heavyweight

"Dos Santos is no joke. He hits hard, and he's been knocking people out. [UFC 103] was a big night for him that definitely put him on the map now. He's in the mix."
-- UFC President Dana White marvels at the continued progress of Junior Dos Santos during last night's UFC 103 post-fight presser, after the Brazilian slugger cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns with a convincing, three round drubbing of former PRIDE star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic on Sept. 19 in Dallas. "Cigano" is now 3-0 in the Octagon with three straight TKO finishes. No question the Nogueira disciple will be looking for his fourth -- the question is, against who? Fantasy matchmakers, do your thing.

id imagine big nog will get next title shot.if brown pride beats rothwell comprehensively hes got a case for next shot.so to avoid being on the shelf id put him in with the winner of mir/kongo.

I think thats a good idea. JDS against winner of mir/kongo or have him the winner of valasquez/rothwell.
If valasquez wins then JDS vs valasquez for next title shot. by then carwin and nog would have had their shot at it.

for one of the first times in the UFC there is a fair few contenders for the HW division
we have JDS, Carwin, Nog, Valasquez and rothwell all in title contention unlike before when randy came out of retirement and got a shot at the belt without having to fight anyone
good performance for JDS, they should put him against a wrestler or someone with good jits and test him in different areas

come on, how is rothwell in title contention?
by brendan on Sep 20, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i mean if he wins
it is really visa versa with valasquez
they will both be in the same situation if they win so why not mention rothwell’s name with valasquez’s

im glad santos won, cro cop is a dirty bastard with the low blow and the eye poke in his last fight. he is crap now, no longer worthy of being in the ufc!

id imagine big nog will get next title shot and if brown pride does a number on rothwell he will be next in line.so to avoid him being on the shelf id put him in with the winner of mir/kongo.

Well he has been in the mix as far as I can remember.
I should be the one sayin’ “see, I told ’ya so!” to all who were still not on the Dos Santos hype-train prior to UFC 103.
Hop on maniacs!

It would be easier to determine if Dos Santos was the real deal if Cro Cop threw a punch once in a while !!
by Justin on Sep 20, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree. Cro Cop is garbage….useless. He has lost his edge. All he has is a left kick combined with a what seems to be a lack of confidence. What a shame.

i have no idea what the hell cro cop was thinking last night..all he did was spend 3 rounds pushing dude’s chest back…never through a single combo…in fact i have no idea why dos santos face was cut…or why he had some welts on his face cause i dont remember cro cop ever hitting him enough to do any damage..
he landed a few straight jabs but all he ever did was clinch and push away…dos was on top of him the whole fight, cro cop just kept backing up not doing anything to show he had any interest in being in there at all….

Crapcop should got to K-1, thats wher he belongs.
by bigmcmac on Sep 20, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He doesn’t belong there, the striking is at a higher level for the most part in K-1 and he got in kick boxing match by a guy who only boxes and lost so I will eat crow in that I said usually boxer vs kick boxer, usually one dimensional boxer loses but wow Crocop looked useless!

This was an end of a legend, it’s time for CRO COP to hang them up before he gets killed in the cage.

I have said this for a long time. I am in no way trying to take anything away from Dos Santos as I think he is a very talented fighter, but claiming he is the real deal after beating Cro Cop is a little premature.
Cro Cop has not been relevant in a long time. He is a great kickboxer, but has not evolved into the modern era at all. He goes in with the same gameplan with every fight. The fact that he beat Barnett a few years back does more to bring to question Barnetts game than his own. I have often said he was overrated and would get destroyed right now by NOG, Randy, and especially Lesnar.

Can Dana please sign Andrei Arlovski!? The dude is waiting to get signed. Please sign “The Pitbull” and make Dos Santos fight him next!

Wow. I am in no way a Mir fan, but unless Frank would stay in love with is imaginary striking skills this is not even a fight. Mir takes him to the ground and ties him into such a not it will take 5 guys to untwist his limbs.
by ASR on Sep 20, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
mir has no takedown skills, the only guys he beats are guys that manage to fall on the ground or trip or something
by brendan on Sep 20, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
See I do not understand that either who has Duffee beaten. I like the kid but lets give him some time to develop before he gets started down a path that will lead to failure. If he is brought along the right way he will be great. If he is set up to be pushed into the main event too early it will mess his career up. One quick KO does not mean main event ready.

JDS wasnt as impressive as CC was shitty.
CC didnt do a damn thing.

Really disappointed with CC. I wish he still had the fire to get back to the old CC. Dos would not have beaten the old CC. I’m not ready yet to get on the Dos bandwagon. CC didn’t do anything in this fight besides shove Dos away a few times.Needs to move up in comp.before I get to excited about him.

Dos Santos is no joke. I didn’t realize how big he actually is. I looked way bigger than Cro Cop. This guy is the real deal and I’d love to see him fight Velasquez or Kongo.

CroCop really needs to drop to 205 in the UFC.
by Whyisitlegal on Sep 20, 2009 1:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dos Santos is over rated no ground game. He would never beat Lesnar EVER! Side note the UFC needs to make two new weight divisions: 195 and 225. This way there would be a chance to have a title match at every UFC, plus the sport is growing. If that happens Anderson Silva would hold the 185, 195, 205, and 225 belts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by matt on Sep 20, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not 205, since he and Lyoto won’t fight each other.
Dos Santos overrated? Hardly. He might not be where he needs to be to become champ yet, but he’s got nine victories all by of (T)KO or submission.
And as for adding new weight classes – they still need to bring in more viable competitors before they can try a move like that, I think. At this point, all the addition of a 195 and 225 weight class would accomplish is a further watering down of the 185 and 265 divisions.
by Jase on Sep 20, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats exactly why they dont make more weight classes
by HEX on Sep 20, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Crocop should retire, he looked so slow and tactically lost. Even if he were to drop weight to 205 then he’s going to be going against people with faster hands. Unless he changes camps and starts training differently, then he’s toast
by kibbled_bits on Sep 20, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez would make a good fight. Dos Santos and Gonzaga could be another option. Or, if it’s not too late, they can scrap Mir/Kongo, let Mir and Nog do the rematch, and let Dos Santos fight Kongo instead. I don’t know if they should throw Duffee against Dos Santos at this point. It might be a little too early for that. The win won’t do much for Dos Santos, and I don’t consider Duffee at Dos Santos’ level yet. They could throw anybody up against him at this point and it might make an entertaining fight, but I think the logical next step for him at this point would be Velasquez, Gonzaga, or Kongo.
by Jase on Sep 20, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Kongo vs Dos Santos would be exciting because they are both strikers and one could get knocked out. Duffee only fought in the ufc for 7 seconds and he needs more fights to take on any top 10 heavyweight.LOL

Cro Cop with that left jab/push thing we wuz doin was pretty lack luster and so not vintage cro cop those pride butterflies in your stomach left kick to Yo’ head outta nowhere days r way over he should go bak to special forces or somthing

mir vs pro x

I would like to see dos fight Cain as long as cain wins his next fight or the loser of brock and Carwin. I want to see NOG fight for the belt but should ut in one more fight before.
by Beaver on Sep 20, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Beaver what you’re saying got flaws in it. I did made you a reply of every situation that you’re saying and it takes 6 paragraphs yet and I wasn’t near the end of my explaination. So I’ll just say this and I hope that you can find it out by yourself. You gonna have trouble with the match up that your saying and who’s gonna be the next in line if they both win in your scenarios. Keep in mind that Dos Santos and Nog will never fight each other and you gonna be w/o contenders in the division for a while. Doesn’t matter if it is Cigano/Cain, Cigano/Brok/Carwin, Nog/Brock or Nog against who?(since you said" I want to see NOG fight for the belt but should ut in one more fight before." please don’t say Mir he doesn’t want a rematch with Nog and Kongo…lol, C’mon) even if it’s Nog/Carwin or Nog/Cain… you gonna be stuck with 1 of these guys champ, the others as contenders that would be eliminated by the next in line(#1 contender)or by the Champ.
Anyway Cigano should fight guys like Kongo, GG, Yvel(* if really in the UFC), Herring next. Not higher than that, to keep Nog and Cain the next 2 in line for the title shot.
As for Cro Cop let him fight guys like Yvel*, Rothwell, Barry, Duff man, Mir or a rematch with Kongo.

My fantasy picks are:
Dos Santos vs the winner of Mir&Kongo
Velasquez/Rothwell winner/loser vs Gonzaga&Duffee(he wants to eat,let him eat)
Two questions, where does Cro Cop picture in now?
Where do the TUF prospects(Nelson,Simms, etc)fit in as well?
by dystelexicone on Sep 20, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Cro Cop: I think he should fight at least once more before there should be any serious talk about the UFC releasing him, or him requesting a release. As for who he could fight next, maybe Struve depending on how his fight at UFC 104 goes. Or Rothwell if he loses to Cain. Maybe the loser of Buentello/Duffee?
TUF prospects: I think it’s too early to tell just yet. We should wait and see how the TUF season progresses so we can see if which guys are for real, though I imagine right off the bat that Roy Nelson, Kimbo Slice, and maybe Sims will get fights in the UFC post-TUF even if neither of them is the TUF winner.

i can safely say that i am no longer a fan of mirko cro-cop, it seems like he doesn’t have the will or determination to fight anymore, it was almost as if he was scared adn didnt beleive in his own abilities to win taht fight. He threw 4 kicks that werinaccurate, its like he doesnt know wat to do anymore.

anyone notice there is no sponsers on cro cops shorts, they hold no banner in his corner with sponsers, and his corner men look like a group of homeless guys he rounded up with the promise of a bowl of soup after the fight, whats up with that?

WARNING WARNING !!!!. befor all u trools get on the Dos Santos bandwagon JUST REMEMBER.. he would have never beat a pride fighting Cro Cop ,, that left would have knocked him out years ago and the high kick would have landed. DOS SANTOS BEAT A MIRKO THATT DOESNT HAVE IT ANYMORE !!! Dana White before u start hyping up dos santos give him a REAL challenege. I think a guy like Heath Herring wen he comes back would be a GREAT test. P.S. MAywhether is back!!! Anyone that says boxing i boring is a gay white boy man humping fan lololol

i dont think dos santos is the new leader of the pack as they say
he’s a great fighter but i think his next fight should be against cain velasquez and he wont be able to beat cain velasquez
cain velasquez is the next big thing
he’s gonna beat ben
then beat dos santos
get his title shot be the next champion
and welcome to the brown pride era

When Dana said, “He fuc’d me”, and then the announcement CroCop was back in the UFC, you knew right then that Dana White was not going to play with his punk aSS. I knew and even commented that JDS was an underdog who would put the screws to CroCop, and he did. Dana knew he would all along, all along. CroCop is DONE! Don’t f with Dana White!

Nog vs Mir II and Dos Santos vs Kongo sounds like the best fights possible. You can hype up the rematch with ease and a heavyweight striking battle between Junior and Kongo would be a rush! I hope this is what happens, because does anyone really care about the Kongo/Mir matchup?
by Woody on Sep 21, 2009 1:23 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Thats exactly how I feel Woody. I’m not exicted about Mir/Kongo. I would really like to see Mir/Nog II to settle all the talk once and for all and I def. think we will see a different outcome. Also, Dos vs. Kongo would be a exciting fight.
