UFC 103 bonuses and awards for 'Franklin vs Belfort' PPV fights

UFC 81 Bonus

UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $65,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 26 fighters on the card. And it may not come as a shock whose wallets are leaving "The Lone Star State" a little heavier.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded undercard standouts Rick Story and Brian Foster "Fight of the Night" for their electrifying back-and-forth war that was short on rounds but long on excitement.

It was a "Horror" Story for Brian Foster after being taken down in the second stanza where he would find himself tapping out to a slick arm-triangle choke.

So slick, in fact, that it also garnered Story "Submission of the Night" and an additional $65,000 -- giving him a total of $130,000 for about six minutes of work.

Not a bad night for the UFC sophomore.

Last but not least was the "Phenom"enal knockout of former UFC Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin that earned Vitor Belfort "Knockout of the Night" in his UFC return.

The "Old Vitor" is back -- and he's got the big bag of bonus cash to prove it.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 103:

Star-divide

Fight of the Night — Rick Story vs. Brian Foster
Knockout of the Night — Vitor Belfort
Submission of the Night -- Rick Story

Again, each fighter received $65,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible. The highly anticipated event drew 17,428 fans for a $2.4 million gate

how do you even pick a knockout of a night for this event??? there were a BUNCH of candidates!!
i guess you go with the “most important” like they did
overalll greatttt main card, can’t ask for more than that common now!!

by Blunt N' Beer on Sep 20, 2009 2:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WOW i am shocked that they gave money to undercard guys who actually need it. I figured they would have given FOTN to Junior-Cro Cop for their gassed out brawl or tyson for well being tyson.

NNR: I went 9-1 last night with my picks, and 12-2 on my bets. How did you do buddy?

Only fight I picked wrong is the McFedries fight, and he needs to be CUT IMMEDIATELY!

by john G on Sep 20, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cleaned house man, i was 8-0 on my bets. I just wish i had put more money down but i am definitely out of the red from the UFC101 and last wec card. I didn’t bet on the McFedries fight too much power and not enough chin on both fighters.

The face of MMA continues to rapidly change. I love it.

by mike on Sep 20, 2009 2:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What does the face of MMA look like anyway? ;)

by The Negation on Sep 20, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It looks like Rampage Jackson with a mohawk, a beard, and 50 lbs of gold around his neck.

No, thats the face of a hit and run felon that shows no gratitude to the the company who had his back.

I think KO of the night should have gone to Tyson Griffin. He had the killer instinct. I also thought Vitor got some illegal back of the head shots in while Franklin was on the ground. Not saying he was still in it at the time, but he did get him with some illegal blows before the fight was over. BTW, I was there live.

by XXzeus07XX on Sep 20, 2009 3:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nah. It was on Franklin’s jaw that he was landing those punches on.
The reason why Vitor got KO of the night was because he’s the former poster boy, and the UFC likes him.

by The Negation on Sep 20, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

there were one or two to te back of the head, but that was while rich was turning is head, vitor moved them back to the temple pretty quick

HECK YEAH!!! Story and Foster earned every cent of that bonus! One of the best fights of the year!…and it’s been a VERY good year!

I just re-watched the card. I thought Josh Koscheck or Paul Daley shoulda gotten KO of the night, since Vitor’s was kinda awkward, catching Rich with a grazing blow that knocked him off balance as he was going for a takedown, and then pounding him out on all fours. Nothing against Vitor, but it wasn’t a clean shot that put Rich on the ground and out of the fight.

by shonuff on Sep 20, 2009 3:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

man Rick Story earned alot! by just winning bonuses. sick!

by mad_drummer on Sep 20, 2009 4:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he should give half of the submission bonus to his adversary because an arm triangle from the guard is damn nonsense..

by shamo84 on Sep 20, 2009 5:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How so? It depends on how strong your arms are. Submissions can come from any angle they dont have to be 100% by the book illustrations. people earning kimuras from half guard and rear naked chokes with one or no hooks. its not like his opponent let it happen. he tried to hold out.

by Santiago69us on Sep 20, 2009 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He wasn’t defending it right. In fact he made a fool out of me coz as soon as he sank it, i was said out loud- you cant sink that from guard if the guy has any game. Then he tapped. All he need to do was put his hand on his ear and he would have been fine. Hell you saw it in the Nog-Handy fight. Once Nog locks things in, there’s no release but even crap handy defended it.

Also I hate it when kimura’s from hald guard and RNC’s without hooks work coz it just means that the guy gettin subbed isn’t ready for this level yet unless it’s against someone with very high level BJJ. Those are kinks in your game that need to be worked out on the regional level and small shows.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 20, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed. the guy really need to work on his defense for sure, but its not like he let it happen like shamo made it sound like. I do have to admit. i love those types of submission becuase they are usually more brutal…like when joe lauzon RNC’d gugerty by shaking his head back and forth while standing behind him….yeah he was standing and no hooks lol.

by Santiago69us on Sep 20, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

my estimation of franklin is that he is a good fighter but not great.everytime he steps up to A class he loses silva/hendo/machida belfort.he wouldve lost to a prime wanderlei aswell.an nanyone really see him beating shogun/rampage in the lhw division?just dont want to see him turn into a gatekeeper.

by scott on Sep 20, 2009 5:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it was funny when cole miller got kayoed and he checked to see if he still had his headphones on lmao

by scott on Sep 20, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Franklin could beat Rashad, Tito, Coleman, probably Forrest, maybe even Thiago…and make very exciting fights with Shogun, Rampage. He’s got a lot of great fights ahead of him at LH.

Dude I missed the fights. Nobody in Alaska could get them because Dish network used a different satellite for UFC than usual with the stupid boxing event going on. It was pretty frustrating that no one here in Alaska could get these fights. I am not sure if this will effect the PPV numbers. If the whole state of Alaska couldn’t watch, I wonder if other places couldn’t as well. Just a thought. Thought I’d spread that info being as some people might not be aware.

by RyanHobbs on Sep 20, 2009 6:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The WHOLE STATE!!! Dude, that’s gotta be like 200 people! How will the UFC ever recover those lost PPV $$$! And poor Sara Palin! I heard she had $100 on “W” vs Goldy.

by shonuff on Sep 20, 2009 6:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

shonuff-I was just pointing out that this could be the case in other places if this happened in Alaska as well. Good attempt at humor though. You funny guy, you.

by nick on Sep 20, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah, watch again. It was pure improvisational genius! When Story can’t free his hips of Foster’s vice-grip closed guard to shift his hips to the proper side and pour on the torque, he decides to use Foster’s leg grip as leverage to extend himself forward and wedge his shoulder deeper under Foster’s chin. Very creative submission. Kudos, Mr. Story, I hereby declare you the winner of the 2009 SAKURABA AWARD!

How in the Hell does Belfort get KOTN. I think his nickname goes from Pheneom, to phantom. Tyson Griffin got robbed of his bonus.

Yeah Cole got robbed for sure, Vitors KO was nothing special at all. A lot of stops on this card tho, which was nice

Had the shotokan stance for sure probly from training with ‘chida. Lots of people don’t know that he’s done kyukoshin karate for many years. It seemed like he worked on distance and timing though more than anything else.

Thanks for the info. If that’s the case, then everyone watch out! We have a new middleweight champ!

Belfort bonus I dont understand.

by Mauro Ranallo's "level trajectory" elbow on Sep 20, 2009 9:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the logic behind the Belfort bonus is simple…it helps them promote him and hype his next fight, which apparently will be for the MW title.

I heard brock lesner sub’ed gonzaga, i’ve tried looking for video on it. Dont know if anyone else knows anything about it or if its been posted.

An astonishing exhibition win for UFC Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar as he submitted Brazillian Jiu Jitsu Champion Gabriel "Napao" Gonzaga in a grappling match after he and training partner Chris Tuchscherer were invited to to Ludlow, Massachusetts to attend a seminar.

The heavyweight champion immediately took down Gonzaga, landing in his half guard then passed to side control after Gonzaga attempted to replace his guard. Lesnar then quickly transitioned to north-south holding on to Gonzaga’s right wrist and as Gonzaga tried to bump up onto his side, Lesnar pulled the arm into a kimura and submitted the Jiu Jitsu ace in just under 50 seconds.

Napao, surprised at the raw speed of Brock Lesnar, said, "I’d very much look forward to a future bout with Lesnar in the octagon". That will have to wait though, as Brock Lesnar defends his belt against the man who knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga, Shane Carwin on November 21st at UFC 106.

Gonzaga also commented on his fight with Shane Carwin; he said one of the major mistakes in that fight was him clinching and taking Carwin down. Gonzaga feels he could have won, had he not clinched with Carwin after he landed the first few solid shots.

Gonzaga recently defeated Chris Tuchsherer in controversial fashion at UFC 102 and is hungry to win again in the octagon to make his way back as a heavyweight contender.

by Nokia on Sep 20, 2009 10:27 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

if thats true thats a massive feather in brocks cap!!!

by scott on Sep 20, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you wanna see Lesnar submit Gonzaga you’re gonna have to watch your friend’s video game…cause that’s where he saw it. Unless he has some kind of ability to see into the distant future.

Gonzaga’s telling the truth…he was beating Carwin till Carwin sent him night-night.

all this talk about who makes what andthe fighters get ripped off e.t.c. The fighters didn’t put up 44 million dollars of their money , no T FERTTITA brothers did .Give the sport time to grow and you will soon see the fighters salaries hit the big time . I’m sure that Dana White and the FERTTITA BROTHERS love the sport as much as all of us do . When things are all in the right place the fighters will be getting HUGE$$$$$ also

shonuff can u amplify.kampmann good stoppage, franklin good stoppage, crocop quit, franca was out, trigg great stoppage!must be the undercard ur talking about.

Nope
Kampman was beat but not out – hands protecting face
Trigg was beat but not out
This martial arts in a cage for crying out loud!

by BudsyKind on Sep 20, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

there is such thing as being out on your feet.his eyes were rolling back.if the ref had let it go on and kampmann hadve been seriously hurt there would be uproar.GREAT STOPPAGE!!

by scott on Sep 20, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, Scott:

Kampman: probably inevitable, but definitely premature since he was still on his feet and covered up defending.

CroCop: since when do they call the fight for an eye injury without the ref or doctor looking at it first. Did CroCop say, “I quit”? I didn’t hear it! I just saw him get the ref’s attention and point to his eye, just like guys do when they get kicked in the cajones and the ref doesn’t see it.

From the original camera angle, I thought the Trigg call was premature, but when I saw how he was posting on his elbow and just staring at Josh blankly, I agreed with that stoppage.

I can’t remember the other ones that made me say, “What the heck is going on with these refs tonight!”

by shonuff on Sep 20, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

crocop did the same as gonzaga did against randy.quit!and kampmann was out.as rampage said against chuck"good job ref"

by scott on Sep 20, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d have to strongly disagree with that. I thought all of the stoppages that were complained about were very justified. I mean Trig was complaining likely because he didn’t even remember the fight had started after the shots he took from Koz, and Kampan’s eyes were rolled back and he was just saved from going completely to sleep.

by GSP4Prez on Sep 20, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

These guys are in solid shape & there recovery time is a little different than ours….
I mean I did not bet on the guys who lost infact I had $ on Kos and Daley however I dont judge based on who I like. We cant keep watching some guys get absolutely pounded and come back to win and then some get rocked and these WWE refs call the fight. These guys are going into a cage for a living gimme a break

by BudsyKind on Sep 20, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, BugdsyKind. I don’t really think it would have changed the final outcome of any of the fights, but refs are supposed to call fights based on what HAS happened, not what they think will happen, whether a guy IS out and unable to defend, not whether he WILL BE if he gets hit another time or two. Kampmann in particular was doing everything he could at that moment to defend against that flurry. Would it have worked long enough for him to stay in the game a while longer? Probably not, but that’s up to Kampmann, not the ref.

yeah, Griffin/Franca started off as an awesome fight as I expected. But his freakin rainbow-fro was so distracting. I think it’s part of his strategy to distract his opponents. It’d be like trying to concentrate on your math lesson when your teacher has a live peacock standing on her head.
