Fighter's fighter: Paul Daley took care of business against Martin Kampmann at UFC 103

I'm happy to be fighting for the UFC. I'm a fighter's fighter, I'll fight whoever. I proved that by stepping in for Kampmann. I don't care who stands in front of me. I'm just gonna be the same fighter, and go out there to finish people. I just wanted to make a statement on my UFC debut. Obviously getting a chance to fight with Martin Kampann was quite big. Me and my team were always confident that I was gonna do business and I did.
ā- UFC newcomer Paul Daley reacts to finishing Martin Kampmann in his Octagon debut at UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. The heavy-handed 26-year-old vaulted himself to the upper echelon of welterweights after Mike Swick withdrew from the upcoming event ā but will a knockout over "The Hitman" be enough to get him a one-way ticket to Lord St. Pierre? Or will the likes of Swick, Koscheck and Hughes have something to say about the future of "Semtex?"

In MMA, fights should never be stopped when a guy has his hands in front of his face OR IS STANDING UP. This isn’t fucking boxing or Elite XC.
I’m not saying that Daley wasn’t putting the wood to Kampmann, I’m just saying it was stopped too early.

he will be good for overseas cards and will have some stand up wars with other kick boxers but i cannot see him doing much in a division that is dominated by wrestlers
good performance though

yeah and you guys said Kampman was a contender… guess I was right again!

nO, guess I was right again! I PROMISED that he wouldKnock Martin the fuck up. For years I have been getting crucified every time I speak semtex’s name. Well he just KO’ed a tite contender iin the 1st round. You all bashi him for getting outclassed by Sheilds, as if Sheilds doesnt have some of the best ground game in the world at 170lbs….and his toughness caused him to survive for longer then most. The kid is a stud…Eat your humble pie fockers.
Instead of giving me my props, Kev will just try to demean the win. yada yada yada. No need to respond, Kev ol buddy…h.e.a.R.D it all before! lol

it was a great win John, not going to demean it at all… but if he got dominated on the ground by a guy who cant strike in shields, GSP will eat him for lunch! Semtex is a contender… once GSP moves out of the division!

Kevin, the UFC said Kampmann was a contender when they set him up in a #1 CONTENDER’S MATCH with Swick. Nobody thought Leites or Cote were contenders either, but they got a shot. So no, you were not right. Again. And even if you were, all these self-congratulatory posts for stating the obvious are pretty weak.
Title shots are given out to guys who haven’t already had them in the UFC, because people don’t want to watch the same guys get destroyed repeatedly in pointless rematches. They’d rather see a new guy get destroyed, even if the last guys that got destroyed are better.
Title shots are not always earned in the UFC, which is why Belfort, a guy who hasn’t even fought at 185 in the UFC yet, is getting one.

I didn’t pick anyone for this fight, mostly because I really didn’t care who won. Daley did good, but if you want me to make a pick for a fight, go ahead and feed him to GSP. GSP can fight Daley and Kampmann back to back in the same day, that will at least make it interesting.

jj, I was half joking! I just thought it was funny how many people believed Kampman was a contender. I don’t believe everything the UFC tells me like some people do!

Lol if you believed everything the UFC told you, you’d believe Huerta was the next LW champ, that Bisping would have beaten Henderson, that Diego is going to be a match against Penn, that Nate was big enough to be a competitor at LW … we are all guilty of buying into the UFCs bull but its nice when we are humble enough to admit when we are wrong. I can tell you now, it all comes down to our own analysis and the truly wise dont’ always pick their favorites, which I most times do.

agreed Cogito, but there are those who are over the top and believe EVERYTHING Dana says… on the flip side there are those like INtrovert who would say Dana is lying if he said it’s 90 degrees in the bay area this week (it is by the way)!

All I know is that I am one of the people most vocal about wanting people to form their own opinions instead of just regurgitating the same crap that the UFC’s marketing machine tells us. I also dont hop on and off fighters bandwagons the day after a fight. I also am the 1st to always admit when I was wrong, as if being wrong is the end of the world. I also understand that fighters are human beings and there are many intangible aspects that are a big part of fighters performances. Going into a fight injured, long lay offs, recovering from injuries!
I really have no idea why Kevin keeps bashing Semtex because he cant beat GSP. Name me a welterweight that can! What the Fock does a young welterweight who just picked up his 1st UFC win, have to do with a P4p legend like GSP?

I agree and its a lot different to come on this site and get knowledgable fans and on the street someone talks about a fight and all you hear is the hype. I laughed because someone told me Frank Mir was going to dominate Brock Lesnar… I laughed and I told him I thought Mir was going to win but by no way would he dominate, it’d be exactly like the first fight (of course I was wrong as well). I’ll have to admit tho I thrist for the strikers in the sport because they put on a great fight, and I also like the wrestlers who can take a beating and still pull off a great fight and I don’t trade fighters based on records, I trade them based on how I like their style in the octogon. Semtex I only heard about earlier last year but when I looked up his fights to get a little more information he made me a fan quickly. This guy is here to stay and unless he’s faced constantly against great wrestlers then I have a feeling we are going to see a lot more KOs in the ring. I’m already impressed that his first two fights were against Kampman and possibly Swick. After that I’ll bet you he gets Thiago or Fitch. This guy is taking no easy fights.

Great performance by Semtex, awful display by Kampmann. Daley is a very good striker so I have no idea why Kampmann tried to stand and bang with him instead of taking him down. Full credit to Paul, he took a big fight on short notice and performed very well, beating a top contender and saving us the bother of seeing GSP massacre Kampmann.
Hopefully Semtex gets another big fight next, as there is no point babying another British prospect. I’d like to see Daley-Swick and Kos-Hughes, hopefully there will be a worthy WW contender by the end of the year.

I was wrong – but im stunned that Martin just stood there and and ate shot after shot. Semtex looked really good, very comfortable and always crisp striking with umph.
On to Thiago Alves…

You would have thought Kampman had never seen a left hook before. He ate enough of them to adjust and never did. This was going to be GSP next match. It would have been laughable. GSP needs to move up in weight there is none left for him to secure his legacy with. He always talks about being the best time to prove it. Move up the weight class and start fighting some guys that are going to push him to the new limits he soeaks of. He steam rolled the top 4. Kampan #5 got his clock cleaned by an unranked newbie, and Swick (as much as I like him) will be a little more then an ant hill sized speed bump underneath a monster truck….

Semtex is no unranked noob, you must not know of any other promotions than the UFC kiddo. He may not be showing top ten status right now but I dare any other fighter to try standing with him and see who sleeps first. This guy is a stud in the ring, he just can’t handle the higher level of wrestlers so Kos, Hughes, and GSP will own him, though he might even flash KO Hughes or Kos if they weren’t careful.

“iām just gonna be the same fighter, and go out there to finish people.”
-well how about evolving a li’l bit. Good thing for him Kampmann was stupid enough to stand and trade. He better be ready for those welterweight wrasslers.

Nice win over a guy who is know as a “striker”, but he would get beat badly by Fitch and Alves, and utterly destroyed by GSP.
by SilasM on Sep 20, 2009 12:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Kampmann had no chance standing, I don’t know what he was doing it’s painful to see a braindead fighter be out there, but at the same time a joy to see them lose!
He showed no desperation at all, looked like he was out there to try to look like he was trying
by RoBerto on Sep 20, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
They should set up Condit/Daley, Swick/Hughes, and the Stun Gun/Hardy winner vs Koscheck. Give the Hazelett/Karo winner Anthony Johnson. Make the Fitch/Alves rematch happen too, once Alves has disposed of Paulo Thiago.
The UFC has done a poor job of setting up contenders in the WW division by not making top-ten guys actually fight each other. It’s time to remedy that.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 20, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Spot on RoB, nothing is more frustrating than watching a fighter compete with no strategy whatsoever and lose because they wanted to beat their opponent at their own game. If you fight like that then you deserve to lose.

kampmann made a huge mistake in wanting to stand and trade. one-way ticket to lord st. pierre? are you kidding me! put him against anyone in the division who can wrestle and he will struggle. do you not remember the jake shields fight? st. pierre takes guys down for fun and would anihilate daley

By everyones logic, and Dana himself, Daley should get an immediate titleshot after this win just like Vitor.
People only remember the last event, and forget about everyone else.
Hendo/Marquardt next for Silva.

You know its funny whenever a British\English guy wins a fight, it doesn’t matter against who, everyone in the US starts saying they wouldn’t last a second with so and so. Just give the guy some credit he just beat Kampmann who I do believe the same people were saying he had no chance against.
I think he did great considering it was his first fight in the UFC and credit goes out to you Paul. But don’t worry mate those Amercian wrestlers are out to get you!!!!!

here mate i’m british too and i love to see my fellow country men do well in the sport, but there is more to mma than being just able to stand and trade! i don’t think anyone is questioning the guys ability on his feet or the performance he gave last night, he is just going to have to improve his ground game if he is going to be a success in the welterweight division with guys like fitch, koscheck etc
by paolo on Sep 20, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Spot on paulo, Semtex performed very well against Kampmann but still has a lot to work on and if he doesn’t will struggle against the elite grapplers in the division, unless they do a Kampmann and try to stand and bang. I want Daley to do well, but he is going to have to become a much more well rounded fighter in order to reach title contention.
by David W-S on Sep 22, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good win for Daley, but I still think most of the other grapplers or well-rounded guys at WW will eventually eat him up, unless he’s started improving his ground game.
by Jase on Sep 20, 2009 1:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Anyone can lose in this business, but kampmann was clearly the inferior fighter standing up and he did try to take it to the ground once or twice, this fight was no fluke.
by nathan on Sep 20, 2009 1:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ATTACK DOG I TOLD YOU SEMTEX WOULD WIN LOL. I think he will beat swick and kos because even tho kos is a good wrestler he likes the ko remember paulo thiago and swick also likes to bang. But fitch and gsp would take him down kos will too if he is smart but he seems to go for the ko alot which might cost him.

Did you??? Who are you, never heard of you! I too predicted Daley to win if Kampanns pride got in his way and he decided to trade, that was a no brainer.
Fair do’s to Daley great win. He will do that to 90% of the WW roster should they be daft enough to stand with him. Certainly cant see Kos being stupid enough too after seeing that. Anyone who does decide to stand with him after seeing that deserves to get KTFO!
The fact remains though that the guy has a sub-par gg and has the potential to get horribly exposed in this grappler dominated division.
Hope he can carry on the momentum though as it would be great to have a British Fighter actually worth cheering for. One who doesn’t get the silver spoon treatment, is exciting to watch and one who can actually finish a fight!

even tho that certain reff is suspect sumtimes i think this 1 wuz justified evn tho Kampmann wuz still standing…i don’t know y people r always sleepin on daley skills ive seen him knock out k-1 experienced strikers like duane ludwig hes got crazy stand up

Kampman tried taking semtex down he failed and dan hardy finishes fights and he is also an exciting british fighter. Dan has had no easy fights he busted davis up more than swick did and davis was injured in the swick fight. I like swick he is exciting but i think daley and hardy could beat him.
by THE ROAD WARRIOR noo nooow we go in! we go in! we kill them! on Sep 21, 2009 9:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Kampmann did one half @ssed td attempt and gave up, not like he had 5 or 6 td’s blocked. No way if I was him I’d have given up like that, not like he was gonna get any change trading with Daley. Stupid tactics!
I dont care for Dan Hardy, he’s got a bit too much to say for himself and isn’t exciting and not a great finisher. Daley would have easily disposed of Davis. Neither man would do anything to Swick IMO, but Daley has much more of a chance due to his superior striking and heavy hands if Swick is daft enough not to take him down.
If I were the UFC I’d put all my efforts in to making Daley the British poster boy! He’s already got a win over a top 10 opponent which Hardy and Bizzzzbing haven’t managed so far, and in explosive fashion and without a judges scorecard in sight! And if he’s carefully managed (ie avoid anyone with a strong wrestling base) and get’s a bit of luck (someone willing to trade with him), then he could be given a run at the title, and really give British fans something to cheer about. Bit of a long shot I know but stranger things have happened and GSP needs new opponents because he demolishes the old ones so easily there’s never any call for a rematch.
by attakdog on Sep 21, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Spot on K-Dog, Kampmann blew it by trying to strike with Semtex and deservedly got KO’d. Sad thing is that he’s only had one fight and has already beaten better competition than any other British UFC fighter. I actually like Hardy, but to me he’s a not as good Sextex as neither have great ground games while Daley is more lethal standing.
by David W-S on Sep 22, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Every is dissing Kampmann for stand and trading but hes a national KickBoxing champion just like Daley so its not like hes a ground specialist, he wanted 2 stand and bang and he got BANGED…Daley is the min Tyson all his punches r to Hurt, he would beat Thiago due to a longer reach and if he caught GSP
by James G on Sep 22, 2009 6:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s not a case of Martin having no stand-up, rather that Daley has no ground game so it was ridiculous to not take advantage of that weakness and end up losing by TKO because of stand and bang tactics.
