Strikeforce eyeing Sears Centre for Nov. 7 'Fedor vs Rogers' CBS event
The Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers" mixed martial arts event is reportedly heading to the Sears Centre in Chicago, Illinois for its CBS prime time debut on November 7.
ESPN Chicago is reporting that the San Jose-based organization is close to finalizing the location that will feature a main event between the top heavyweight fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, against heavy-handed up-and-comer, Brett "The Grim" Rogers.
It will mark the Strikeforce debut for "The Last Emperor" after being acquired in a co-promtion deal with M-1 Global last month.
Also expected to compete are middleweight stars Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Jake Shields, duking it out for the chance to claim Cung Le's recently vacated 185-pound middleweight title.
Light heavyweight star Gegard Mousasi and women's champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos are also expected to be in action on fight night.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on the Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers" event as it becomes available.

What?! How can you book a show w/o having the venue lined up? Kind of bass ackwards. I can’t imagine anyone being that moronic as to do it that way, but why would this be a separate, later announcement?

I am pissed. This fight should have happened here in Minneapolis or St Paul goddamnit.
Anyways they’re gonna get Marloes for Cyborg and Southworth or whitehead for Gegard.
by NameNotRequired on Sep 18, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I told you guys that MOusasi didnt get hurt in the exhibition fight with fedor and that he was lying about being injured. He faked the injury to get out of the meaningless fight with Soko so he could compete on the historic CBS card next to his boy Fedor. The card is rumored to be amazing:
Fedor vs. Grim
I wouldnt mind seeing Southwarth vs. mOusasi cause I hate Bobby for the crap he said to Leben so I dont mind seeing him get KTFO cause Bobby will stand with him. They could bring in Arona to fight him. They could feed Fejao to Gegard. They coulld also bring in a durable guy like Tiger white to showcase Gegard! UFC was really smart by taking lil Nog off the market. Jorge Santiago might be able to move up to fight him, as could Lindland.
Mayhem vs. Sheilds for the title
Jacre vs. TBA
mousasi vs. TBA
Cyborg vs. TBA
any word on if Diaz will be on this card?
by john G on Sep 18, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions
There are only four televised fights on this card John, and with Mousasi and (retch) Cyborg fighting, forget about any other big names on this one. Cyborg should be on the undercard, but it will be a “title” fight, so she won’t be.
They are probably doing a card in December that will feature Jacare/Lindland/Lawler, Nick Diaz (against Heiron, maybe?) and hopefully Overeem/Werdum.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 18, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Mousasi against maybe Randleman or Whitehead? A fight I would like to see but I don’t think Strikeforce can afford to sacrifice is Werdum vs Mousasi I believe Mousasi is 225ish so giving up fifteen pounds would be no big deal problem is there would be no more decent HW for Fedor to fight unless werdum was to win wich I doubt?
by Puck Head on Sep 18, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Im happy with 4 fights. They need to get MOusasi someone good to face and it would be awesome.
They should consider having MOusasi not cut weight and fight a guy like Remmy BoJansky under k-1 rules. Or he can fight Yvel at Heavyweight. I just want to see him in an exciting match up. Lindland vs. MOusasi would be an interesting fight.
by john G on Sep 18, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions
This card is about putting some high-level MMA on network TV, John. They’re not going to do a kickboxing bout.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 18, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions
JJ: I know that they wont do K-1 rules. That will probably never happen in a USA based mma organization. I just thought it would be cool to see.

by john G on Sep 18, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Speaking of Captain Fantastic, aka Frank Mir, I’m thinking one of the main reasons Dana is so opposed to Anderson fighting Mir is that he knows Anderson will knock his head off and the HW division will be exposed as a lot less awesome than Dana is making it out to be. It would also pretty much put an end to the Frank Mir myth, the same way it did to Forrest.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 18, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions
LMAO, that’s got to be a joke?
Absolutely JJ, I totally agree. That’s why Dana was saying that he’s a purist and he want Anderson cleaning the LHW division before let him go at HW. We know anyway that AS won’t fight Nog and there is no way Dana will put him against his best HW of all time(Brock) either. So ending the Murr hype is out of question.

Yeah, I wouldn’t miss an Emelianenko fight if it’s this close to me. Especially if I lived in Chicago. If you’re a real Hardcore MMA fan and you’ve got the money to go. Why the hell not? Unless the band Snot came back from the dead, I don’t know why?
Myself, I’ve been waiting to see Fedor fight in person for a long time. I’ve got to see what this guy can do with my own eyes. This card is shaping up pretty good too. It might not be the UFC but it is better nothing. Remember, I live in Michigan and professional MMA isn’t even legal here yet. Cheers!!!

LOL daniel your a winner how can you argue with a full timer like you? Did I say I was complaining about free fight…no but how did they make it a lot better by putting on four guaranteed fights? If the UFC put on Brock vs Brad Imes
GSP vs Serra
Machida vs bonnar
BJ vs Guillard
would you call that a lot better you wouldn’t complain because they are free but don’t tell me you would call it a good card just because it’s free.

I would gladly watch all 4 of those superstars dominate 4 others, and wait in anticipation in case something unexpected happen. Wow could you imagine the ko’s? Why did you tease like that? Dana make it happen! ;)
The card is shaping up to be the best it can be. They don’t have the talent depth of the UFC. They’re doing what they can and they’re doing a damned good job @ it. I’m very impressed with the fast and efficient rise of this company as of late.

Hey Dana, where is your network deal you keep promising over the past 3 years? huh?
by sam on Sep 18, 2009 1:59 PM EDT reply actions
With Strikeforce/Showtime working out a CBS network deal, the UFC has been dropped down a peg.
Reaching many more millions of homes, with the #1 heavyw in the world gives Stikeforce a definitive advantage.
The UFC cable show on Spike cannot compete. Dana White is most probably crying at night. Dana knows he’s lost the lead in this race.
by Jack on Sep 18, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
you kidding me? production value+ the number1 guy in all other weight classes.. competition enough for you? ps nobody likes cbs they’re the same company that airs the afc
by randy murders on Sep 18, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Jack,
“Dana knows he’s lost the lead in this race.” LMFAO! Your crazy bro. Nobody gives a sh*t about Fedor except a few hardcore fans. And many of them have seen the light. Fedor doesnt have the (I wonder) factor. Lesnar has it and so does Kimbo, and thats why their a big draw. It the, I wonder if he can make it in MMA. Their numbers probably wont even beat the numbers from the debut of TUF.
by JV on Sep 18, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I live in chicago and ten of my friends have already asked me when do tickets go on sale. They aren’t hardcore mma fans but they do know who Fedor is.
by johnb on Sep 18, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Umm wow I must be missing something. Isn’t the whole idea of signing FEDOR, getting a deal with CBS, and putting him on a free primtime card, in the USA, the idea to get him more recognition?
Cause ya see, I was under the impression that, that may indeed be the “big idea” that STRIKEFORCE has at this moment. And it worked wonders for a low talented Kimbo.
It takes one knowledgeable mma fan in a house full of buddies watching the free FEDOR fight, to hype/explain what this man has accomplished & who he is. Let’s wait and see how quickly he is accepted if/once he makes short work of Brett. Which by the way is a VERY impressive feat to an average mma fan, who will strictly see 10-0 and huge size advantage as “wow that lil bald Russian is gonna get creamed”. Making it amazing talk after “lil Russian” pulls it off
by Daniel worby on Sep 18, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions
I meant that for johnb’s post.
Moderation stinks.
by OJR on Sep 18, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Daniel, I understand what your saying and agree to an extent. But Fedor lacks a personality (look at his boring interviews) No english (which is something I believe has hurt the Spider aswell) So maybe those uninformed buddies will get educated, but that doesnt translate to him becoming a draw.
by JV on Sep 18, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Good point on him not being able to speak English. But if ur gonna learn about the sport or get involved, ur gonna learn about the sport. So there is no reason for STRIKEFORCE to not take this perfect timing, and get their biggest weapons exposed in everyway they can to the new comers. And there is no better way then the way they are going about it.
This isn’t being done so boxing fans/ mma critics switch over. This is being done so new fans are born. Spider may have been hurt a little from not being able to speak English. But answer me this:
How many average/new fans watch the interviews, video blogs, etc anyways? Boy not very many. Therefore posing very little problems as their much more interested in what the hype man (ie: commentators etc) have to say about the fighter, while they’re watching the fight.
Just makes it all the Better when he wins, and they’re a lil wiser to the new light shone on what hopefully becomes a new interest in their life
by Daniel worby on Sep 18, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions
The problem with this card is it could easily be 3 or 4 one round fights that will make the average man think MMA is not that exciting of a sport the average fan along with a lot of fans would prefer cometitive action over dominated fights one or two wouldn’t be bad but having four televised one rounders could make for a long night of commentary between fights along with all the commercials? I would like to see some evenly talented fighters go at it.

No. It doesn’t. Only two intriguing fights. Mousasi will beat on some can. Women’s MMA sucks. Werdum is alright, but he’ll get fed another can. The difference between the UFC and organizations like Strikeforce is depth. Strikeforce can put on a couple top fights to sell the card, but a UFC card is typically stacked from top to bottom.

by Puck Head on Sep 18, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Since you can see so clearly into the future bro, can I have the winning lotto numbers for this weekend?
Seriously, I know what you’re saying, but the only fights that don’t have a significant favorite on 103 are Franklin/Belfort and Cro/Cop/Dos Santos. Shields/Miller will be pretty even odds.
If the UFC handed out free cards like this you’d be all over Dana’s nuts. Compare this free card to a UFC Fight Night or UK card and the UFC card looks like a joke.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 18, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Don’t get me wrong JJ I love the fact that SF is putting it on network TV not only is good for them it’s great for the sport but I’m a little worried about the quility of the card right now For the casual fans tuning in and all the critics on MMA. As boxers have been getting bashed for there lopsided fights it worries me this card will offer them fire power to throw back in the MMA’s face. Thats my only issue with this card.
by Puck Head on Sep 18, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions
For sure puck free is great. Me and you were already talking about what UFC is going to counter with and honestly I will have a hard time deciding what I should watch live. I know how can you watch a event you already know the outcome too but when you know it’s great and haven’t seen it for a long time you may choose spike that night if you had to choose because you didn’t have a recorder or you will be flipping the channels. The start of the classic Pride Spike is going to be showing is what we believe is going to be used as counter programing and don’t get me wrong I love free MMA but guaranteed great oldies that peaple haven’t seen for some time is going to be hard to turn away from I can also see a Fedor vs. NOG or Cro Cop fight being on that night LOL the last time he fought a true top five fighter.

by iamdanawhite on Sep 18, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions
Your best bet is O’Hare Airport.
There are hotels in the O’Hare Airport area and the site is actually alot closer to the Sears Centre than getting a hotel in the actual city itself.
Also, if you want to do some sight seeing there is a train line (the Blue Line) that goes directly into the downtown area from the airport.
by OJR on Sep 18, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Affliction put on better events than this, and they could never sell out, and they where on ppv. don’t be surprised if this event gets scrapped and or rescheduled, all it takes for an org like SF is one injury. sure i’ll watch it since it’s free, but i wouldn’t pay a dime to watch it. and i’m sure they are getting the same crap deal that elite got and are tring to make it into ppv. no way they will get big sponser money for this event. why does everyone think the ufc hasn’t cut a tv deal yet. b/c they’re shitty, non-money making deals, thats why. people still way overestimate fedor’s drawing power. will they ever learn?

great point jj…….. if this had be a free ufc event it would have been the craziest news in a long time…….the only free ufc event that could compare to this is 75 and how long ago was that…….. FYI puckhead there have been alot of ufc cards in the past where people have thrown opponents under the bus and said they have no chance……. So before you even start acting like you appreciate this network deal i suggest taking your tongue out dana’s a** hole
