Man plummets to his death; police blame deadly mixture of booze and UFC programming
How do you know when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has reached mainstream popularity?
When it joins "Menace II Society," World Wrestling Entertainment and cheesy heavy metal lyrics as possible causes of death.
Darenell Jones, 25, fell from a third story window at a Best Western Inn and Suites in Farmington, New Mexico after having a few drinks and allegedly reenacting some moves from the Spike TV broadcast of UFC Fight Night 19 on Wednesday, September 16, according to The Daily Times.
Jones was in the hotel celebrating the wedding of a family member and after consuming alcohol, got into some friendly horseplay that mimicked the mixed martial arts action that played in the background.
The fracas led to Jones being pushed into a window that unfortunately gave way, causing the Fruitland native to fall 20 feet to his death.
Like most tragic accidents, this too was probably avoidable. And I think the first step to preventing these types of incidents is to lay off the bottle, not the UFC programming.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Jones family during this difficult time.

Which fight was it where a fighter executed a flying elbow drop off the top of the cage? That’s what this guy was imitating, right?

It’s very dangerous to trane UFC without professionals.

I remember back in the high school Rugby days a saw a kid older than me take an ol’fashioned pile driver during practice and was paralyzed as a result.
I didn’t know him but it left an big impression.
Unfortunatley we are all human and not invincible (something the old guys know about)
really too bad but this does happen with or without the UFC

Kevin the window gave way, I think it was closed and broke. This is just gods way of weeding out the stupid.

Stupid and pointless death, to blame this on anyone other than the idiots involved is both naive and negligent reporting.
by David W-S on Sep 18, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
This isn’t blame on anybody including him or his buddy kids horse around all the time as do we adults it’s just plain bad luck and naive for anyone to point the blame at the UFC. As a kid I have done many stupid things and I’m sure could of turned for the worse if something freakish happened. I wish his family well and for him to RIP.

So if someone was drunk driving and speeding and died an a car cash can we say it was a mix of booze and Nascar? So stupid that I have no comment.
by getrawbc on Sep 18, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Lol if he was watching Nascar at the time of the fight. Its not like it was two random guys fighting and then they blamed MMA for warping peoples minds. This is just a good ole scare tactic to say, hey your not a profession stop trying to pretend you are. I tend to agree, most people don’t realize how dangerous fighting really is and the people in MMA don’t help that any. They can take crazy punches and the fight ends when they go down or tap out. They get up, hug and walk out, a lot of people could get the wrong impression. Like leaving out their injuries, the fact that they are professionals and know when to stop, how badly it hurts your knuckles, or weight differences. So although genetics are truly what killed this man, its still ok to say “don’t try this at home, especially while drunk.”

That kid is such a fuck up. Not only does he kill that little girl, he gets put on probation & out of jail early, then goes and robs a pizza guy. Now he is doing something like 20 or 30 years (I think). Did I forget to mention his mom was a Florida Highway Patrolman? Don’t know if she still is though.

I am quite upset, disturbed, and sad at the comments I have read. Darenell’s death is a tragic loss to our family. He was my grandmother’s youngest son. He was a good man, raised in a good home. We are NOT blaming his death on UFC. That is the media’s choice of words. I guess a way of selling newspapers. Also, he did not get married at the best western, his wedding was in Hawaii. Again, the media loves to embellish in order to sell stories.
It bothers me to see the comments posted here that are degrading to him & our family. You didn’t know him so you should not make judgement on him and our family. These type of comments are not helping us mourn. The negative comments are making it worse.
I would appreciate it if you would cease the negative talk & give him the respect he deserves.

it’s funny, all you hyprocrites jumping down people’s throats for making cracks at that guy when he had a seizure before his match, like he could have died….. now here we have a guy that did die and we got nothing but joksters around…
by lukeinShanghai on Sep 18, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions
Having a seizure which is normally from your brain mis-firing(genetic) and getting wildly drunk, fighting your friends, going for a double or single leg take down by a window, where you push your friend thru the window because he has good take down defense or great over/under hooks, where he falls to his death are two completely different actions. One is unavoidable and the other is stupidity. Why even mention that the UFC was on? just say you were horsing around with your friends and I pushed him to his death. Not the UFC made me do it. If you can’t see the difference in that, I am sorry!

Seriously, what is the relevance in saying it’s embarassing? There’s no respectable way to die in an accident. The focus has been put on the UFC/MMA but, as mentioned by some of you guys, ITS THE BOOZE!
Though, even if they weren’t drinking there’s no legislating for plain old stupidity…

Hello All.
I’ve not read all the comments here, but I’ve read a fair few of them. I agree that the Media’s portrayal of this is misguided and down right stupid, but I think many people should remember that someone has died here.
This is not funny at all. The family are most likely grief stricken and I would suggest highly offended by many of the things that are being said in discussions such as this. Never speak ill of the dead – it’s not fair that they’re not around to respond, so have some respect and leave the poor guy and his family alone.
May he Rest In Peace.
