'Pop' music: Roger Huerta's shoulder was a bit noisy during Gray Maynard's submission attempt
Props: UFC.com
Quoteworthy:
"On tape? It's like, Ah, I'm gonna pick him apart. But when you get in there, it's a little bit different. All kinds of stuff coming from weird angles, he's a tough kid. I heard (his shoulder) pop a couple of times, I was like 'Hey it's poppin'.' I guess I could have tweaked it a little harder but he did a good job. He's a tough kid, a warrior. It was a tough fight."
Undefeated lightweight "Bully" Gray Maynard reflects on his Sept. 16 victory over departing star Roger Huerta. "El Matador" was caught in a painful submission that was one tweak away from joining Razak Al-Hassan on the list of most gruesome UFC Fight Night injuries on record. However, Huerta survived the attempt and got back to his feet with nary a grimace. He may not have any fights left inside the Octagon, but he certainly gave fans something to remember him by.

Yeah, I actually had trouble watching that, and there’s not a whole lot in the fight game that makes me turn my head.

It was a close fight; IMO Huerta won the 1st, 2nd either way, then Maynard the 3rd. I think the two judges that gave the fight to Gray 30-27 were smoking crack, no way did he win rd 1.

was it cecil people’s judging that one?? that judge is whack in so many fights..imo..i thought he had at least one round too (huerta)..i have to admit that gray did well..but he did not win all three rounds..

Cecil Peoples will always give it to the guy who struck the most. He seems to practically ignore the ground game. I don’t remember how he scored that fight. I’d need to re-watch DVR. My guess is that it was Peoples who gave it to Huerta. The weird part is that I agree! I gave it to Huerta, though I can see how the decision went to Maynard.

Maybe he’s ahead of the curve, compared to other refs and is not giving credit for dry humping, only effective ground and pound.
by PW on Sep 17, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s how I scored it too O Damn. I couldn’t believe the scoring. I thought Roger made some serious improvement and cleaned a lot of things up. Shame to him go while he’s progressing so well. Hope he comes back.
And that kimura was SICK! I wonder how bad his shoulder is damaged?

You are right, Huerta won 1st and 3rd rounds for sure, isn’t this about agresion, octagon control?, Manyard was running all the time just trying to counter punch, he did a couple of times and had two take downs with that sibmission “atempt” that Roger defended very well that means no points for either figther so I’m like you, wondering what kind of weed the Judges were smoking….., But of course the bully stays in the UFC so lets create a top contender for future fight promotions. Im I rigth DW?

Roger is extremely talented, he just needs to improve a little more on his footwork..
I wish they paid better to make guys like Roger stay, his shoulder could have gotten seriously injured last night and he walks away with “peanuts”

why the UFC even tries to promote a guy like Gray Maynard is beyond me, there are thousands of fighters out there and they chose the most boring dude out of them all. his wrestling is great, but his fighting is not great in any way
by RoBerto on Sep 17, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Here we go again RoBerto. Whether you or I like it or not wrestling is a part of fighting. I was as unhappy as anybody at how the last 2-3 minutes of round 3 played out but the bottom line is that Maynard controlled Roger on the ground and negated any offense he could mount. The ability to take someone down and control them even if there is not a lot of damage inflicted is a very effective fight method that wins a lot of decisions. I like how Roberto always contends that the strikers or the guys who want to stand and bang are the real fighters.
Also, Roger is a badass, tough as hell and it is unfortunate that he is leaving the UFC. I think the fight last night just shows us how far away from being a serious threat to the title that Maynard is.
by Adam T. on Sep 17, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol, the only threat to the 155 lbs title right now is Diego Sanchez, and when Penn schools him thats it; clear sailing from here on to retirement for BJ. Not Frank Edgar, not Gray Maynard, not the winner of Tyson Griffin vs Hermes Franca, not Nate Diaz, NO ONE at 155 after Sanchez is going to beat BJ Penn.

Adam.T that’s because it’s true.. I don’t care if they stand and bang or take it to the ground and beats the sh*t out of the other guy, but Gray does none of that he uses his wrestling to avoid fighting that’s why he’s called LAY N GAY!
by RoBerto on Sep 17, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea Rob, his style is EXACTLY the SAME as Tito Ortiz’s!! Gray and Tito are practically identical when they fight; I didn’t see it before, but thanks to you I get it now!

lol, I can’t wait for his reply, OD.
by Alpha Male on Sep 17, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I get why people think Tito is a doofus as a personality, but when I watch most of his fights, he is an example of active, damaging GnP, most often from the full guard. Tito won a lot of fights by hurting people on the ground from full guard.
by PWW on Sep 17, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly PWW, Tito is the best GnPer in the business IMO! He looks cool, his pre fight trash talk is cool, and he fights on emotion.. I already knew that comment was coming O Hot damn :)
Tito is Tito, Gray is Gray no matter how they fight

Too be honest, Maynard controlled round 1 for about 3 minutes and when Huerta hit 1 little flurry that Maynard didn’t back out on, the commentary went straight to how Huerta’s winning the round. R1 was close, but Maynard won for a majority of the round, so it went to him. R2 hands down went to Maynard with his little jab knockdown. R3 was a little slower again, but Maynard with the takedown and the deep sub attempt sold him the round.
by Crackbaby on Sep 17, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Huerta won round one, the only significant that happened was Roger hurting him and putting it on him.. controlling the round only means something when nothing happens
by RoBerto on Sep 17, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How did Roger win the third round? He spent 3 minutes on his back and was caught in a very tight kimura that was very close to causing a serious injury, to me if you are that close to winning a fight by submission then it should be counted as highly as a knockdown in the scorecards. Full credit to Roger for battling through the pain and making it the full 15 minutes but after getting dropped in the second and almost submitted in the third he did not win that fight, though I agree that it should never have been scored 30-27 Gray as he did nothing in the first whatsoever.
by David W-S on Sep 17, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not often do I cringe at anything, but I have to admit I kinda looked away for a second there in anticipation of his shoulder coming unhinged.
by introvert on Sep 17, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That submission attempt was sick! And I agree, no way was it 30-27. I had the fight at 29-28 Gray.

I knew if it was very close that Huerta was going to lose. He has been, in the past, outspoken about low pay and poor treatment of some of the UFC’s fighters. He’s pissed Dana off with his remarks more than once. Nonetheless, Dana should be happy with entertainment fighters like Huerta serve up when they fight.
by Jason on Sep 17, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow, i wasn’t expecting Huerta to look this good. Both fighters have improved greatly. I would love to see Huerta back in the cage soon.
by Stryker on Sep 17, 2009 10:25 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed Stryker. I laughed my ass off when Goldie said that Huerta even straightened his hair out after Maynard landed a solid shot on him. Huerta has heart and toughness that just can’t be taught.

really sad to see roger go – he has a ton of heart and talent – his chin is made of granite and for a pretty boy he is not afraid to get in there and mix it up
but hey if you can be a movie star/model – who wouldnt wanna do that
good luck to you roger

gray had a nonsense gameplan, by just striking he could have very well lost rds 1 & 2.
i thought sean sherk was the only wrestler who had decided he was a dominant striker
by shamo84 on Sep 17, 2009 10:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree, though Koscheck is just as bad these days. I don’t understand why wrestlers either completely rely on their wrestling or ignore their skills altogether, it baffles me. All mixed martial artists should try and build up a well rounded arsenal, using different skills depending on their strengths and their opponents weaknesses, I can understand a wrestler keeping the fight standing against a poor striker but against Huerta that is a horrible strategy.

Roger is very exciting to watch. He was stalking Maynard most of the fight, unleasing lighting quick combinations that look awesome but they just don’t have any mustard on them. Maynard was somewhat effective with his counter strikes and clearly had more power. Still, I don’t know how 2 of the 3 judges seen Maynard winning all 3 rounds, especially the 1st round! The 3rd round probably left a lasting impression in the minds of the judges but I think that the judges submit their scores immediately after each round.
by stephen on Sep 17, 2009 12:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
wow, i on the other hand though gray did great. he was doing well in the first until roger brought it to him at the end of the round. the second he was a lot more cautious and picked some real good shots. the third he realized he was getting outstruck, so he took it to the ground controlled him and of all things got him in a sick ass kimura. i mean he was a hairline from finishing(submitting) roger, something no ones ever done.
by mrBlonde on Sep 17, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Maynard did look alright. But the fact that he barely won a split decision over a guy who hadn’t been in the ring for almost a year just shows you how far out of Penn’s class he is. Maynard would have absolutely nothing for BJ.
by Adam T. on Sep 17, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But he didn’t finish him. it was close but close only counts in horseshoes. Yhis guy is boring to watch, he’s like watching paint dry or dust settle. He’s that exciting. BJ would wreck him in 1 round.

Roger is going to have problems with that shoulder for the rest of his life. Something was damaged there and the shoulder is a bad joint to injure.
by stevo on Sep 17, 2009 1:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Are you a doctor stevo or were you there backstage after the fight? A little premature and overly dramatic to make a comment like “problems with that shoulder for the rest of his life.”
by Adam T. on Sep 17, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve been a physical therapist for 11 years. Shoulders are my specialty. I wouldn’t be surprised if his shoulder isn’t sore at all. I have a lot of patients that are hypermobile. I can put them in a very similar postion (known as internal rotation and it dosen’t even bother them surprising as it sounds. It’s usually the females but I’ve had a fair amount of guys be that flexible too.

Actually Adam, I am a doctor AND I was backstage after the fight. His shoulder is f0cked.

Huerta had round 1 HANDS DOWN. Maynard had the 2nd. And everyone knew right after he won the 2nd round he would run in and just keep taking him down and just squeeze out a decision…. Getting pretty sick of wrestlers who you know will do that right away…
by Mikey on Sep 17, 2009 2:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed Mikey. I was cussing and yelling at the tv when it became evident how round three would turn out. I guess in the end it is up to the fighter to not allow the takedown.
by Adam T. on Sep 17, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He should have taken him down in the first round, honestly I can’t believe that a world class wrestler tried to stand and bang with an iron chinned brawler when he hasn’t stopped any top 20 fighter in his career. I have no idea why Gray only went for one takedown in the first 2 rounds and if he hadn’t have caught Roger with that nice jab he would have cost himself the fight.

Maynard couldn’t break popcorn. He hits like a girl and does nothing but wrestles- snooze fest. Tyson Griffin would eat this guy alive.
by Rich on Sep 17, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gray dropped Roger in the second round and had a very tight kimura in the third, so there is no way that Huerta won every round. He did win the first though.
Gray-Tyson could fight under Royce-Sakuraba I rules and there would still be no stoppages. Neither man can finish a fight to save their lives.
by David W-S on Sep 17, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Huerta won that fight, hands down. Props to Maynard for finding the kimura in the 3rd, but let’s be honest, other than that, he did little to no damage even when the fight was on the ground. It’s undeniable Roger won the first round, and he really impressed me with his combinations and speed. In my opinion he squeaked out the second round too, but I can see it being close and going either way. But 2 judges scoring the fight a 30-27 for Maynard is ridiculous, and it definitely smells like a Dana White flavored rat to me.
Also, gotta give credit to Kenny Florian for giving Huerta so much props during the fight. You could tell he has a lot of respect for Roger, which is weird considering he tried to accuse him of greasing after their fight. Did anyone else notice that he said Huerta was very “slippery” on the ground? Just haaaad to slip that in, huh Kenny? LOL.
by G on Sep 17, 2009 5:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agree with you there G. The ufc would much rather have Huerta walk with a loss so they could promote Maynard as an undefeated contender. I sure hope ufc judging does not end up like boxing when it goes to the scorecard, how many boxing matches have we seen where we all wonder what fight the judges were watching? or better yet, what were the judges smoking?
Huerta has my TOTAL respect, it is too bad that he is leaving.
