A '200 percent healthy' Anderson Silva is ready to make Frank Mir his next victim
Props: Fighter's Only Magazine
Quoteworthy:
"I don’t know anything at all about any elbow injury. I wonder who hurt me? I’m 200 percent healthy and there’s no injury. UFC can set the next fight whenever they want, I’m ready. I’m interested in fighting Frank Mir. He can be the next one."
Despite an MMA Live 'tweet' from ESPN that had the Brazilian sidelined with an elbow injury, reigning UFC 185-pound champion Anderson Silva is as fresh as the morning dew and ready to fight when called upon. "The Spider" makes no qualms about answering the challenge of former heavyweight champion Frank Mir, who promised to 'rip his shoulder out of his socket' if he and Silva ever hit the ground during a fight. A move up to heavyweight would be unprecedented, but more than likely wouldn’t happen anytime soon — company president Dana White, naturally, isn’t too keen on the idea. In fact, he's still holding out for an eventual superfight between Silva and reigning light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Spidey and "The Dragon" have already refused that offer. Sounds like fighting in the UFC isn't restricted to just the Octagon.

“fight Hendo and Marquart again”
why? he already beat them… “tailor made?”
you mean a 250 pound guy who is great on the ground is tailor made for him? I don’t get it. Hendo or Nate have zero chance at winning a fight against Silva! You guys need to snap back into reality!

I would love to see Anderson and Rashad. Mainly cause I can’t stand Rashad and would love to see him go to sleep again. But besides that Rashad is an ex champ and that fight would make sense for the spider. After he KO’s Rashad he can fight Hendo. If he beats Hendo let him fight Shogun who will be the new LHW champ.

kevin youre off your rocker if you think hendo and marquardt have “zero chance” against silva! hendo has the perfect skill set to beat silva, and will do it if silva’s punk a$$ ever accepts the fight

Hendo and Nate should fight each other, until then a rematch with either man is pointless for Andy in my opinion.
I agree with Kevin, an Andy-Rashad fight makes a lot of sense but seeing as he declined a fight with Randy at 105 I don’t see Rashad fighting until Rampage finishes filming the A-Team.
Right now there aren’t many LHWs available, which is why Randy is fighting Brandan Vera and the MW division does not have an undisputed contender, so HW seems like the best option if Silva is going to have a big fight in the near future. Size isn’t a problem for him in my eyes, as if Randy is able to fight at HW then I don’t see how someone of a similar size, only much younger and more talented can’t take a fight in that division, especially against someone like Mir who has awful striking in comparision to Silva and has been knocked out by a small HW in Vera. I’m liking this match-up more and more all of the time.

Brendan, Silva’s already beaten both of them easily, if Hendo’s that good then why doesn’t he prove it by fighting Nate instead of ducking him.

Hendo is the only guy at 185 who has a good chance to beat Silva. That is the fight everyone wants to see. Not Marquardt Hendo.
Hendo is a legend in the sport. He has fought everyone at 185, LHW, and HW. He deserves a rematch
by Bob Lawblah on Sep 15, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s already faced and lost to Andy, he should fight Nate because they are both in the same position as they both have lost their title fights but have looked good since. I don’t think that it’s fair on Nate to fasttrack Dan at all and Hendo’s past accomplishments are not enough alone to earn a title shot.

YOu guys SUCK! What that hell could possibly be better then Anderson moving up to heavyweight to put that arrogant, smug tool, Mir in his place? I dont think there is anything I would rather see happen in mma than Anderson putting Mir on queer street! Mir wants to run his mouth about Anderson…FINE, now make him back those words up! what the hell is a Former 2 time HW champ, calling out the middleweight champ?…hahahah LOSER!
This fight would be a dream come true and an awesome feather in Anderson’s hat for his historic UFC legacy. Im as big a Fedor fan as there is, but If Anderson beats former UFC champions in 3 divisions (twice moving UP in weight, not DOWN), then there is no question that his Legacy trumps Fedor’s.
Mir is in trouble! He has a bunch a angry, world class, Brazilian, team Blackhouse Legends gunning for him! Hahahahahaha That mouth of Mir’s wrote to many checks that his ass cant cash! i cant wait to see Mir get KO’ed in 4 fights in a row becoming once agaiin, irrelevant! Even the UFC’s marketing team wont be able to make him look good after the losing streak he is about to go on!

They are not going to feed Rashad to Anderson. They want to keep his ingeniously-built hype up until Rampage knocks him into oblivion.
Hendo and Nate should definitely fight each other. If not, let Henderson go to Strikeforce and fight Mousassi, I would love to see that.
by Skope on Sep 15, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions
How does Hendo have the perfect skill set to beat Anderson?? Silva has only ever been stopped by submission, somehow i don’t see Dan catching him in a heel hook. Its much more likely that Mir could submit him and he’s way bigger than the Spider, to say that he wants Frank next shows balls in my opinion.

Well said John, I hate Mir almost as much as you so I’d take great pleasure in watching him get smashed by the legendary Anderson Silva. I like Forrest and the beatdown Andy gave him was my favourite MMA moment to date, so him absolutely destroying an arrogant and larger opponent who I can’t stand would be amazing.
I also like the idea of him facing Couture purely for the fact that I’d get to see the legendary Silva fight live against another legend in Randy. Shonuff made a good point as well that it would show whether Andy can compete with HWs, as if Randy is too big then he shouldn’t move up to fight Mir but a dominant win would propel him into a HW fight. He had no problems dealing with Irvin and Griffin, both allegedly too big for him so I don’t see Randy being too big either. The only downside is that I like Randy and I want to see Andy beatdown fighters that I dislike e.g. Mir.

From Bloody elbow
Frank Mir, meanwhile, continues to keep himself directly in the spotlight now having Anderson Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Cheick Kongo all wanting to fight him. It’s amazing how far a little bit of trash talk can take a guy in this sport.
After kongo I want to see Mir and NOG get it on but it is true wether you think he’s a “moron” or not he is smart enough to keep himself in the spotlight.

Fighters I like to watch get destroyed in order:
#1)Mir
#2)Forrest
- Randy
Basically, I dislike all the UFC silver spoon fed fighters. Fighters that get opportunities that they dont deserve because are marketable.
notice I let Chuck Liddell off the list. WHY? Because out of all the former UFC posterboys, CHUCK never chose the easy path. He wasnt awarded title shots in every other fight based on his marketability. He worked his way up to title shots by taking on all comers. When he was awarded title shots, he didnt sit around for a year waiting to fight the champ. He risked losing title shots by taking on really tough fighters in the meantime. Chuck was never one of my favorites, but you will NEVER hear ME BAD MOUTH CHUCK LIKE i DO THE OTHER POSTERBOYS!

Brandon Vera is the king of spoon-fed opportunities…only he has failed 3 out of 4 of them.
Anderson is also being spoon fed at LH. Nothing against what he’s accomplished against top guys like Franklin, Hendo, and Forrest, but rest assured, the UFC is choosing his opponents very carefully.
by shonuff on Sep 16, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions
There is nothing wrong with Anderson wanting to fight Frank Mir. It’s not like he’s calling out Stefan
Strouve (sp?). He wants to be the best, and he wants a challenger that doesn’t crumble after 4 hits. He’s looking for a good old fashioned fight… which no one has really provided to date.
Calling out Frank Mir is an experiment… but one that I WILL PAY FOR. I do want to see Hendo/Nate have another crack at him, but not before another challanger at LHW or HW. BUT i don’t like losing a top challenger in the loser of Hendo/Nate – The Mir fight doesn’t make sense for the MW division. SO Dana does have some choosing to do.
People saying Anderson is hand picking opponents is bogus. Thats like saying Couture hand picks his opponent.
Anderson was expecting a better fight w/ Forrest and he’s still looking for it.
by Big Zino on Sep 15, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree, even Silva himself didn’t expect to tool Forrest like that. On paper it shouldn’t have gone that way in 3 minutes…
But Anderson is just that good. And I don’t fault him for looking for better fights that are more of a challenge.

Comparing how Hendo did against Silva and how Forrest did against him is a stupid comparison. He didn’t walk right through Hendo at all. Wow u are a moron Pimp. why would u want The Spider to beat 2 guys he already did instead of a whole new challange. Frank Mir is more of a challenge than Dan or Marquart. He would probably outweight Silva by 30 pounds come fight night and he would have a really good chance of submit the spider. I don’t want to see the spider fighting guys who he beat convincibly the first time. Everybody keeps talking how Dan won the first round by dryhumping him and interrupting his breathing. He would not be able to do that for 5 rounds and don’t even get me started on how bad he school Marquart on their fight. It will be like Franklin-Silva 2, a little longer but with the same result.

i dont see how wanting to fight is to pad his record, mir is a top ten heavyweight and a former ufc champ, he is huge and very skilled on the ground with greatly improved standup. I would love to see this fight personally as silva is regarded as one of the best if not the best pound for pound fightes in the world. He is the ufc middleweight champ and has beaten one of the best 205ers in Griffin with ease. He has yet to be tested in the octagon and a win over mir would establish him as one of the best fighters ever if not the best fighter ever. Name one other middleweight who would have a chance at beating a top ten heavyweight. Matt lindland when he was regarded a top middleweight attempted to move up to heavy and got pounded. I think this is a great fight and would love to see it. I think Anderson has proven to be the best middleweight and at this point in his career just wants to be challenged and as of now nobody in the middleweight division can challenge him and most of the top lightheavies are tied up with future fights so why not let him fight frank mir while both their names are hot?

YES KEVIN! Someone else who is not that interested in Randy and Vera fight!
by Edgecrusher71 on Sep 15, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
The Couture vs. Vera fight is very intriguing. First you have the proven veteran and former champ Randy Couture. He is one of the most polarizing figures to ever step foot in the octagon. A 5 time champ over two weight divisions in the twilight of his career. He is the ageless wonder trying to prove he still has it coming off a loss to Minatauro in what could very easily be the fight of the year. He has proven to be a force at light heavy in the past and moved on to dominate the heavy weight division now he is back to reclaim what use to be his the title belt.
In his way the young brash, cocky, trash talking Brandon Vera. Once dubbed the next big thing. Called out Chuck Liddell after his first time in the octagon. Started off his ufc career on a tear in the heavyweight division despite being vastly undersized. Has huge career aspirations and has yet to achieve them coming up short when given big breaks. Was once the number one contender in the heavyweight class until contractual problems with his manager and the ufc arose and forced him out of action for one year. Came back to fight Tim Sylvia who was still considered one of the best, lost a hard fought decision, then tried to rebound against another top heavyweight in Werdum which he lost due to controversial stoppage. Drops to Lightheavy weight and has since looked lackluster but still shows glimpes of the young gun he once was. Still only 31 years of age on a two fight win streak an given the oppurtunity of a life time. Can he step up to the plate and defeat the legend? Or will he wilt under the pressure once again?
This is a huge fight!!! It could signal the end of the era for a beloved legend in Couture or it could lead to the start of a new era for the young talented Vera. Couture needs to prove he still has what it takes to compete while Vera will try to prove he is finally ready for the big time and to become a future champion like he has long aspired to be.
by matt on Sep 15, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions
C’mon Matt! “Couture needs to prove he still has what it takes to comepete”…Gimme a break. You just got through saying he’s coming off the fight of the year with the number 2 or 3 HW in the world…and he’s got prove himself against a never-was like Vera who’s never beaten a single ranked contender. How many times does Couture have to prove himself! Give him a match that means something to his career!
by shonuff on Sep 16, 2009 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions
AMEN Mike! THAT’S what I’m talkin’ about. They both want the fight. They both stand to gain HUGE respect for a win over the other. And neither stands to lose anything. If Randy wins or even shows well, it will prove he’s still a top-tier contender at LH, and if he loses, so what! No shame in losing to the P4P best in the world. On the other hand, if Silva wins, he adds one of the biggest legends in the sport to his victim list. And if he loses, so what, he lost to a much bigger guy who was the World Heavyweight Champion less than a year ago and the most decorated Champion in history. If Silva really wants to fight Mir (which Dana says will not happen unless he completely cleans out the LHW ranks) then what better way to prove he’s ready for HW’s than to beat the previous HW champion! Like I said, WIN/WIN for everybody (not to mention it would blow the ratings out of the water and dwarf the competing boxing card, thereby putting the UFC in prime negotiating territory with the major networks.

That is unfair Griffin is a good test at a weight above his natural, especially as Silva came off the back of two fighters that didn’t want to fight him. Griffin can take a beating and was willing to stand and fight. That is why the fight was made, there is no shame losing to Silva either.
Weakness Champs in UFC history might be Tim Silva, Dave Menne, Matt Sera sorry i had to disagree with you. Even Evan (RIP) wasn’t the greatest champ.
Mir is a quality test, his BJJ is top notch and his hands have improved greatly in recent years. PLUS once again two division above his natural weight, fighting a guy the UFC have just push for the title so i can’t see how he is average at all.
Silva has challenged himself more then any other fighter under this P4P bracket. I agree when he goes back to 185 he needs to fight both Marquardt and Hendo but he has already beaten them in the last 2 years (a little longer), and imo i don’t think the results will change. More impressed with Marquardt, Hendo will be easier put away.
BUT i agree a fight against Machida would be awesome, But it wouldn’t happen. And he would put Lesner away even though the guy is like a medieval war machine.
by Dixon on Sep 15, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
As much as it pains me to agree with LEster, he’s right, Anderson definitely does NOT fight the best. He’s ducking Hendo, the best MW. He’s using friendship as an excuse to duck Machida, the best LH. And he’ll use it as an excuse to avoid Nog, the most skilled HW (who’s only 15 lbs bigger than him.) I’m sure he’ll use it to duck Lil NOg too. Dana didn’t put up with that crap from Tito, there’s no reason he should put up with it from Silva. Friends don’t let friends duck!

i agree with lester. fight the best or stfu. what kind of p4p king goes around calling out former champions coming off decisive loses? atleast fedor has to fight left-overs being outside of the ufc. anderson does not so we shouldnt encourage this.
he needs to fight machida. more people should be screaming for this instead of just kneeling to the guy. you can be friends with someone after you fight them professionally. im sure those guys knock each other out in sparring every once and a while.
by chris on Sep 15, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Lesner is signed up to fight Carwin, Mir would be a great entrance to HW. I could understand your point a little more if Silva had fought at HW in the UFC before but fighting one of the top 5 HW in the UFC isn’t picking easy fights. Think he had to fight Irvin on his entrance to LHW (not his choice) so Mir is a massive step up for the HW entrance (if it happens)
Anderson Silva has put himself in a position where he can now look at different fighters and see potential good match up. Its not like he is a challenger calling out people, hes a champ. And he has set UFC history for most fights won in a row, unless we under value UFC as an organisation (be silly to) that is some achivement.
Fedor can’t be P4P he has never moved weight to test his conditioning and/or skills. But can i also remind you that Fedor didn’t take the chacne to sign for UFC hence the reason he is fighting left overs. That really sounds like a true champ to me IMO.
But i do agree both him and Machida should put their friendship aside for potentially fight of the decade. imagine the hype around that, and i think this would live up to the hype for a change.
by Dixon on Sep 15, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Fedor didn’t have to “move weight” because in Pride he could fight anyone at any weight without anybody having to gain or cut. He fought guys from MW to giants like Hong Man Choi.

So fighting top ten competition is not fighting the best. When Andy fought Forrest he was the #4/#5 ranked LHW in the world. Frank Mir is currently the #4 ranked HW in the world. Nate is ranked #2 and Dan is ranked #4. So how is fighting Mir(ranked#4) or fighting Forrest (#4/#5) any less? Dan has fought his way back to the top since losing to silva by beating self proclaimed contender Bizzzping and turtle on his back Palahares. Franklin was at 205, so that fight doesn’t matter for the 185# div. And if Hendo and Marquardt do fight to figure out who #1 contender is there still is another fighter that everyone forgets, Yushin. He the #3 ranked fighter across the board and in my opinion deserves the shot before both Marquardt and Hendo.

Fedor walks around at the same weight that Anderson does and has been fighting at HW his whole career. Hell, he took nothing but crap from his haters for fighting Lindland, because Lindland has fought at MW before…so why does Anderson get so much respect for always fighting guys Lindlands size when Fedor gets crap for it?
by introvert on Sep 15, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions
I do think Fedor gets too much crap for fighting guys who aren’t heavyweights…the guy isn’t that big at all! But is Anderson really the same weight as him? I think Fedor might be a good 15 pounds heavier…still most of the LHW class probably has a size ADVANTAGE against fedor considering they enter the octagon at about the same weight but they are generally a couple of inches taller than fedor.

“Fedor gets hate for it because unlike Anderson, Fedor doesn’t cut to 185 to fight middleweights. Anderson does.”
LMFAO….that makes 0 sense. On one hand Anderson is being praised for fighting at LHW…on the other Fedor is being pissed on because he doesn’t cut? lol…wow, just wow.
by introvert on Sep 15, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly, Andy is prepared to fight the best at any weight class and he is the one who makes the cut to fight them so his opponent are at their best weight for the fight and put on the best possible performance, while when Fedor fights smaller guys they are always the ones who have to put on weight and fight in an alien weight class.
Some of the posts on this thread are pathetic, honestly criticising a fighter for moving into different weight classes instead of just fighting at HW is laughable. People are whining because Andy has dominated the MW division because they’re too small, then when he moves up to LHW to fight bigger guys they’re supposedly not good enough even if one was a former LHW champion, then when he challenges a HW he gets moaned at for ducking 2 guys that he’s already beaten, when 1 refuses to fight the other to determine an undisputed contender, and for challenging someone not on his level, despite this HW outweighing him by 30-40lbs and being a 2x HW champion (including the interim title). Rather than make yourselves look daft by complaining about Silva just admit that you don’t like him because that is the only reason behind your complaints, excuses and arguments against him.
by David W-S on Sep 15, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Intro, the point is Andy fights people at their proper weight class and when Fedor fights smaller fighters they always have to move up to his weight class, putting them at a disadvantage. Considering that Andy used to fight at WW at one time it’s amazing that he is prepared to move up in weight so often, he could quite easily lay back and finish his career at MW but instead he is looking for superfights at a higher weight. If Fedor wants to fight the best, including smaller fighters, then cutting weight and fighting them at their peak size would be the biggest challenge instead of fighting outsized and bloated MWs at HW.
Both guys are MMA legends and both have outstanding records so should be shown more respect on this site. My problem with Fedor is putting M-1 over his career, as I don’t want to see him fight the likes of Paul Buentello (who Coker inexplicably offered the fight to originally), though I’ll admit that I want to see him face Grim. Andy’s management are looking to get him the biggest possible fights at whatever weight class and for that they should be applauded not criticised because some people think Fedor or GSP are #1 p4p or Hendo fans are upset that their hero can’t avoid Nate and get granted a title fight because Bisping was promised one (admittedly he didn’t deserve it but it would have been a big draw in the UK and he would have got smashed in the first round anyway).
Fedor’s management including Fedor himself are looking to get money for nothing from promotions like Affliction and Strikeforce, rather than get him in big fights with better talent. Only Grim, Overreem and arguably Werdum would be worthy fights outside of the UFC unless you want to see him face a roided up Barnett in Japan which I don’t personally and Alistair’s manager has claimed that he wants out of SF because of M-1, so that fight won’t happen in the US anyway. My problem with Fedor is and always will be M-1 as I think they have cost him and us some huge HW fights but his record is legendary and I find it laughable how fans complain about his or Andy’s records, both are legends end of.

Mir is one of my favorite fighters but lately he’s been getting a little annoying with how much he’s been talking. I wouldnt mind see anderson facing him. Personally i think mir would win. i think his standup has developed enough that to capable on his feet and while his standup isnt close to silva i think mir can get the fight to the ground and do his thing. I think silva is taking too much stock into his recent win over forrest. I’ve always said that Griffin, while he has great heart, is one of the most overrated fighter at LHW. Look at his last four fights:
1) Shogun – he didnt beat the real shogun, he beat a guy that was hurt and outta shape as evidence by his 2 knee surgies afterwards. no way he beat the shogun of today or old pride days.
2) Rampage – again he didnt beat the real rampage, he beat a guy that got lazy and fat while filming tuf and took griffin way to lightly. The best rampage would destroy the best forrest.
3) Rashad – was never in real trouble against griffin. Forrest doesnt have ko power or great sub skills.
4) Silva – Just had a horrible game plan, tried to stand with the best standup fighter in mma
While Mir got beat by lesnar he showed good standup. This isnt the same Mir that got beat by brandon vera. Silva seems to be getting a big head lately. Lets see him fight rampage, rashad or even shogun before he talks about taking on a heavyweight.

Mir has no takedowns, AS would knock him out faster than Lesnar did.
by jay on Sep 15, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
U know for a guy who has no takedowns he does manage to get the fight to the ground and get the submission win…this isn’t always done by way of takedown but i think it does a lot to disprove there is NO WAY this fight can go to the ground. It will be harder because of how quick silva is but it isn’t unimaginable. I dont personally think Mir would pull it off especially because I think if/when silva knocks him down he is just gonna sit there and wait for him to get back up rather than try to gnp him out. But I just can’t say there is NO CHANCE for a jiu jitsu expert with a significant size advantage to find a way to get the fight to the ground especially when he knows he cant just shoot in and get the double or single leg he even said it himself. so you know if the fight ever happened he would have months to come up with a creative game plan to get the fight to the ground.
by ffffff on Sep 15, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t see Murr being fast enough to get Silva to the ground. It will take a quick wrestler with excellent TD’s to even touch him without getting knocked out. Murr is just way too slow. On the ground(if it ever got there) I would give Murr an advantage.
by jay on Sep 15, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions
like he said, Mir doesn’t have good takedowns. It would look a lot like the Silva/Leites fight, with Mir diving to his back repeatedly and trying to pull Silva down into guard with him. Silva won’t take the bait and the fight will be boring as heck.

by Booseye on Sep 15, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions
The thing that I find strange is vera was 225 as a heavy weight, cro cop is about 220, couture around 225. Anderson silva for his last fight walked around 225-230 and dana “refuses” him to fight heavy weight? Why?. Forrest griffin walks around just as heavy or heavier than most heavy wieghts, wierd to me. If silva is truely the “P4P” best he should kill these guys. I guess its the whole jumping 3 weight class’s thing. If silva really wants to challeng himself he should vacate the 185 lb title. He should fight at 205 and heavy weight, his natural weight class.
by nathan on Sep 15, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions

agreed, when they talk about “walking around weight” it could be that when they arent training at all and let themselves go. silva at 220 is probably weeks after a fight if he doesnt train at all. its definately not after these guys put in a full camp for a fight and then try to cut weight.

Silva and Fedor are within 5-10 lbs of one another between fights. You guys are splitting hairs with this thing.
Fedor is 6’0 and fights around 225 lbs…Silva is 6’2" and walks around at about 215-220. Fedor has 5-10 lbs. on Anderson, but Anderson is 2" taller…it’s a wash if you ask me.
Even with their physical stats being pretty much a wash, Anderson is fighting at MW and Fedor is at HW…yet Anderson gets nothing but praise and Fedor gets hated on? There is no comparison between these two guys when it comes to P4P king…Fedor all the way.

Anderson wants to fight a former HW champion, which means that he will have fought former champions at 3 different weight classes. That is damn impressive in my opinion. Fedor is admittedly a legend but I’d have liked him to have fought the likes of Lindland, Babalu and Arona at a catchweight or LHW, as it would have been fairer on the smaller fighters if Fedor had to cut and they could fight at a weight that better suited their size. However, bashing Andy for fighting and winning at several weight classes or bashing Fedor for dominating a weight class in which he is almost always outsized is laughable.

True that, intro. This hate for Fedor and love for Anderson (once again, ONLY because of his fight with Griffin) is getting comical. Fedor has fought bigger guys and beaten them badly HIS ENTIRE CAREER. Silva is 10-15lbs. at most lighter than Fedor and cuts a lot of weight to fight MW and dominate such great fighters such as Lutter, Franklin, Leben, and Leites. And, yes, I am including Franklin in that group, as I feel he has always been overrated and only held reign over the weak division that was MW until Anderson came over. I don’t believe in the P4P rating at all. It’s all marketing and completely fictitious. However, how can anyone say Anderson would be ahead of Fedor in such ranking—albeit a silly one like P4P? Again, Anderson has been beating up much smaller fighters his whole UFC career[EASIER]. Fedor has been fight guys bigger and stronger his entire career[HARDER]. Fedor is P4P personified.
by L E E on Sep 15, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions
good point LEE. I think Anderson is more than capable of doing quite well against bigger fighters, but he hasn’t proven that yet. He cleaned out the weakest division in the UFC, a division mostly filled with guys significantly smaller than him. I’m not saying he’s not the most dominating champion in MW history, I’m just saying that if you wanna talk about P4P legacy, his only meaningful fights were Franklin, Forest, and Hendo, who are actually his size and able to compete at LH. He needs to stop fighting hand-picked fighters at LH and start going after the big dogs.

Forrest beat shogun an rampage, he is a legit opponent for anyone at 205, just because everyone says he sucks now don’t make it true.
by jay on Sep 15, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Forrest definitely doesn’t suck and is a very solid contender at 205 (though he didn’t really beat Rampage). But stylistically he was a cake walk for Anderson. Dana knew it and Forrest knew it. Forrest fights the same way Anderson fights with the same weapons (punches, kicks, knees) but at half the speed. He had nothing in his arsenal that posed any threat to Silva and Silva clowned on him just like Dana wanted. After those two very disappointing matches with Leites and Cote had everyone booing during Silvas fights,Dana was looking for someone famous who would make Silva look really good. Forrest was hand-picked to be Silva’s punching bag for his exhibition. I was pissed as soon as they announced that fight because I knew exactly what Dana was up to and I think it was disrespectful to Forrest to humiliate him like that. It was obvious from his interviews that he wasn’t happy about that matchup, but Forrest doesn’t duck and choose like Anderson, so Dana knew he’d accept it and give it his best effort.
Forrest is a great fighter and matches up very well against Shogun, Rampage, Rashad, Thiago, Tito, Chuck, etc. But he was picked specifically because he had nothing in his bag of tricks that posed any threat whatsoever to Dana’s pet.
by shonuff on Sep 16, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions
If Fedor wanted to be known as the P4P king, we all know what he had to do. He didn’t do it because HE DOESN’T HAVE THE WILL: He doesn’t care about it, he just wants to go home and play chess. LEAVE FEDOR ALONE!!!! Let him end his career the way he wants it, safely in the minor leagues. The man has earned it. Who are we to question his business decisions? Why risk an injury so late in his career and so close to a well deserved retirement? The more you talk about him as the P4P best, the more you expose the madness of his turning down the UFC. Just leave it dude. Let it go.

Intro, King Fedor has beaten Choi, Zulu and Lindland as well as Mousasi and Aoki in exhibition fights so you can play it both ways. And I still don’t see how smashing a former LHW champion in 3 minutes is something to mock, it’d be like laughing at Fedor for smashing Sylvia.

When there are other big fights, a rematch with someone you choked out in under 10 minutes is not a high priority. If Dan earns another shot by taking out the other top contender, then we can get it on again, but until that happens why should he deserve another shot over Marquardt?
by Woody on Sep 15, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Ummm because Dan has fought and beaten a who’s who list of bigger names than Marquardt has ever fought…because Marquardt was barely outboxing Gouveia and had Maia’s chin handed to him on a platter. (by Maia) No disrespect to Nate, but his resume doesn’t hold a candle to Hendo’s, and Hendo was already rightfully promised the next shot at the MW title.
by shonuff on Sep 15, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Hendo needs to fight Nate, forget the resumes, fight to see who the number one contender is. Hendo just beat Bisping, that doesn’t get you a title fight IMO.
by jay on Sep 15, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions
So Dan’s pride resume all of a sudden makes him better than Marquardt right now? Henderson killed an overrated Bisping and now I am suppose to buy a Anderson Silva rematch? Nate vs Dan is the fight I want to see before a rematch that wasn’t close. I dont care that Dan held Anderson down for a round, the fight was not close as it didnt last into the third.
by Woody on Sep 15, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Spot on jay and woody, Hendo-Nate needs to happen before either of them deserve a title fight. As great as Hendo’s resume is it means nothing contendership wise, if you could get a title fight because of past success then Chuck and Randy would be fighting for the next shot at Machida.
by David W-S on Sep 15, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly David…spot on as usual. Why waste one of Silva’s fights against these guys if we don’t even know which one of them is best? Let them fight it out and in the mean time Silva can fight LHW again.
by jay on Sep 15, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions
a) we DO know which one is best b) we definitely know which one can give Silva a better fight (Hendo). c)if Silva wants to keep the MW belt, he has to defend it. How could defending his title against the top contender be a waste of time compared to a meaningless fight like Mir!
Personally, I think Silva should abandon the MW belt and focus on fighting top-5 LHs and legends. I think he’d be a major threat to the LHW belt. But if he wants to keep his belt because he’s afraid he can’t get Machida’s, then he needs to defend it regularly instead of faking surgeries while the condenders whittle each other down. That’s pathetic!
by shonuff on Sep 15, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions
shonuff, how do we know who is better between Hendo n Nate? Not including your crystal ball, what has happened to make you sure Nate isn’t better? I think that Nate takes that fight 70% of the time. I don’t have a crystal ball though so my opinion is just that, an opinion.
by jay on Sep 15, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
You don’t need a crystal ball, Jay, just an unbiased look at what they’ve accomplished. Dan has beaten Franklin, Wanderlei, Vitor, Noguiera (big nog). Who has Nate beat on that level? Who has he even fought on that level??? Nobody! Hendo simultaneously held the MW and LHW belts and beat the #2 HEAVYWEIGHT in the world. I like Nate as much as anybody…I like him considerably more than I like Hendo, but what has he ever done to put him in the same league with Hendo, much less claim he’s better! It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that Hendo is better, just a little objectivity and a step back from the UFC hype factory.

Triple Threat Match? Silva vs Mir vs Kongo!!!
by Crackbaby on Sep 15, 2009 1:09 PM EDT reply actions
I really don’t see Anderson’s “natural” weight class being 185! He walks around at 220+! And he has no visible fat on him at 220! He’s a natural 205’er that has the ability to drop even further. I think he can hold his own at HW, but, he can forget about holding a HW belt! And even though anything can happen in any fight, especially with world class fighters, I just don’t see Silva beating a technically sound guy like Mir! But, i’d love to watch!
by Dana's a CrossDresser on Sep 15, 2009 1:13 PM EDT reply actions
Mir has been handily KOd by much lesser fighters than Silva. (ie: Vera) that’s why Silva wants him. He’s hand-picked him as the biggest guy and biggest name that he knows he can beat at HW. Notice he’s not calling out Brock or Nog.
by shonuff on Sep 15, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions
what should his first fight at heavyweight be against lesnar? he is calling out a top 5 heavyweight who is the only man to every so big nog. How is that handpicking an easy fight?
by matt on Sep 15, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions
it’s handpicking because he’s calling out a specific fighter who has nothing to do with any title or either of the weight classes he fights in. Why would he do that? Because he knows Mir is the one decorated HW that poses no threat to him and make an easy feather in his cap. Otherwise why call out Mir specifically? Why not just say, “I wanna prove myself against some top Heavyweights.” ???
by shonuff on Sep 16, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions
And for the record, people, Mir’s stoppage of Nog just means that he showed up awake! It’s nothing to brag about. Nog was so sick that Kenny Florian could’ve knocked him out that night. Mir and Nog need to rematch. I don’t blame Mir for wanting to claim that victory, that’s how people are. I like to tell everyone that I beat my super-athletic sports-god friend at racquetball. But I conveniently leave out the part about him being in a full leg brace at the time. Heheh.
by shonuff on Sep 16, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions
I am really having a hard time grasping the following thought I see a lot: Fighting a heavyweight submission specialist is not a challenge, but fighting two guys that he disposed of in less than two rounds is a HUGE challenge? What is this nonsense?
Since when is volunteering to move up TWO weight classes padding your stats and hand picking opponents. What does Anderson Silva have to do to get respect from some of you? Clean out the MW division a SECOND time? I only want to see him in big fights from now on so to me that is top 5 205ers, heavyweights and the Hendo/Marquardt winner.
by Woody on Sep 15, 2009 1:15 PM EDT reply actions
I agree about only wanting to see Silva in big fights.(Though I think Hendo easily fits that bill.) Silva’s LHW fights so far have been obvious hand-picks (no disrespect to Forest) I think he should finish out his 3 fights against top 5 LH or Randy or Hendo (who are both honorary top 5 at any weight they can make). Then while he is free of obligation to the UFC, he should fight Jones Jr. and Fedor on TV. Then he should come back to the UFC and finish out his years fighting whomever is left.
by shonuff on Sep 15, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Doesn’t Andy train his jits with the Noguieras? I think he wants revenge for Big Nogs loss to Mir – I think that’s the only reason he seems so adamant about fighting Mir and is calling him out whenever he gets a chance!
by Morcheeba on Sep 15, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions
Let Big Nog avenge his own loss! How does Anderson beating Mir do anything to restore Big Nog’s rep. Nog needs to beat Mir himself and prove that their first fight was a fluke so that Mir will have to shut his mouth and stop acting like he earned that victory.
That’s another great option instead of Vera/Couture. If Randy can be ready to fight that soon, why not Nog. Let Nog erase that loss to Mir at 105. That’s a fight that just has to happen.

Anybody saying that Anderson Silva is handpicking opponents is crazy. Anderson fights and beats everyone they give him. The ONLY knock on Anderson is that he hasn’t beat enough elite level fighters. Though Frank Mir is a worthy opponent and a win will still prove that Silva is still the #2 fighter in the world.. I would rather see him ONLY fight #1 or #2 guys in a weight division at this point in his Career. Its time for the UFC to give him the BIGGEST fights so we can really see that this Guy is the BEST MMA FIGHTer to ever live. Right now i think he is VERY VERY VERY close to Fedor in terms of P4P. EIther way Silva is a F*k i n g JOY to Watch “he finds your rhythm and DANCES TO IT” -Brandon VERA

I’m not saying Silva is handpicking, though Mir is clearly a handpick and I do think he’s ducking Hendo. I’m saying the UFC is protecting their golden boy. I mean c’mon…Dana talks forever about Anderson being the P4P best in the world, but when he moves up to his own natural weight class they give him guys like James Irving and Patrick Cote? Then when fan’s start to lose interest because of his lackluster performances, Dana spoon feeds him a superstar who’s tailor made for him! No disrespect to Forrest, I love the guy, but stylistically he was fodder for Silva and Dana White knew it full well and picked Forrest for exactly that reason…a big name that Silva would look spectacular against, someone with huge drawing power but no tools to threaten Silva. Forrest has essentially the same tools as Silva but without Silvas speed, accuracy, and knockout power. I was calling it a setup from the moment they announced the card. Forrest knew it too, he knew he was just being fed to Dana’s pet spider, but he has too much pride to turn down a fight.
by shonuff on Sep 15, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions
NAH MAN i dont agree with that.. Forest has proven to take big fights and win. COTE was a number 1 contender anyway. Everybody says he’s ducking hendo but i dont see it. PLUS he already beat him but whatever. He’s not being fed anyone Mir is hand picked but does that mean he’s gonna win. No one knows, Rampage always wanted Wandy in pride and when he got him it was a wrap. U Guys HATE ON EVERY GOOD FIGHTER FIRST FEDOR NOW ANDERSON… if these guys arent GREAT then WHO IS?
by zack on Sep 15, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not saying the guys Anderson fought recently are trash. Far from it! I’m just saying that they have styles that make them easy targets and pose no threat, and that Silva refuses to fight the guys whose styles do pose a threat. You’re right, Forest is a great fighter and can win big fights…but not against someone who has all the same tools he has with more speed, accuracy, and power. Forrest is a Camero. He can beat a monster truck. He can’t beat a fighter jet.
I agree with the general public that Anderson Silva is one of the best in the history of the sport…very possibly THE best…but he still has to prove it and this business of taking time off until he gets the specific fights he wants in other weight classes is disgraceful.

ummm…by refusing them a rematch…for fear that they might have figured out what they did wrong the first time around.
Randy totally dominated Liddell in their first fight. Totally! But if he’d refused a champion like Chuck a rematch, and said he was going to sit out for a while till Chuck beat all the other contenders, I’d have said he was ducking.
Refusing a rematch to a fleet contender who accomplished nothing in the first fight and never fought anyone else at brass level is one thing. Refusing a rematch to a decorated 2 division champion who has all the skills to give you trouble…that’s ducking. Pretending to take time off for surgeries so you can avoid fights you don’t want and then popping back in to announce the one fight you do want..that’s just pathetic!

i agree ojr. Anderson wants challenges. what is the challenge in fighting somebody that you already dominated again. I know Hendo is next in line in the MW division but when you are the best fighter in the world and completely cleaned out your division you want to keep challenging yourself and if that means moving up a weight class or two who are you to tell him no. The man is not challenge by any middleweight and so far by no lightheavy weight so why not let him move to heavyweight and fight Frank Mir?
by matt on Sep 15, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I totally agree Conan. He won’t lose any sponsors, any money, and that wouldn’t changed his MW status as the best MW Champ. He can go on and do what ever he want from there, with his couple of last fights on his contract. He can retire w/o being stuck in the “championship clause” with the UFC and he can go fight RJJ. He can even come back to the UFC after and if he still want to be the MW champ… I’m sure that the UFC gonna be more than happy to give him a title shot right away. What’s the purpose to keep the MW belt if he just wish to fight 1 guy at MW and then finishing his career at other weight class?

When does Fedor face Rogers? If he wins who is left? Overeem will come back for the big check of fighting him probably. Verdum will be fed a can in the meantime to try and boost him as the next guy to fight for the title. If Fedor beats Roger in round 1 Strikeforce is dead. Maybe then Fedor will fight Brock for 1 million to the winner plus ppv %.
by hatteras on Sep 15, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions
No Fedor gets guaranteed money +co promotion for M1. The UFC offered him way more money if he wins but if he loses he would get just a little more than he would on Strikeforce and no co promotion. His first fight would of been against brock after he lost that he would have to probally face A.Silva & Machida he could of easily gone 0-3 in his first three fights so the safer road was Strikeforce as well he can keep his winning record going.

LISTEN… the Hendo fight is gonna be big But Anderson has 3 FIGHTS left on his Contract and as a Fan I want to See him in some crazy fights… I want him to fight Machida, Maybe Brock (anything is possible), GSp, Shane Carwin even guys that would make for VERY VERY interesting fights. The Hendo fight should happen.. but if it doesnt i would be happy if he fought other top level guys. AND dont make the case that HENDO would kill SILVA with that big right… for it to work he has to connect. PLUS we all saw how it went the first time they fought did that big right connect ? once even?. SO CONAN THE TOOL i say to u we all want to c the best fights and if there is a better fight out there then HENDO WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT.. HE HAD HIS CHANCE NO TOO LONG AGO AND HE CAME UP SHORT!!

how many time in the first fight di st.piere connect with anything damaging against hughes? your point is irrelevant, para usual. no one should have to wiat for silva and the pussy “my elbow hurts, so i can’t fight for awhile, make hendo fight someone else first” line is pure bullshit, as evidenced by the “200%” propoganda coming out of the silva camp now. he won’t fight machida and he isn’t calling out brock. has gsp said he wants to fight him? stop making fantasy fights to excuse him from defending his title. no one is clamoring for mir v. silva. hendo deserves it with his wins over bisbing AND franklin. the forrest fight was pathetic. show me an exciting fight that is being considered and i will grant you an audiance, until then, get off silva’s dick. he has to defend his title like everyone else.

I read ur paragraph and u actually said nothing. U didnt answer me when i said he beat Hendo already and there are bigger fights out there. Then u brought up Hughes and Gsp WHY? GSP is a top FIghter what r u talkin about u TURD. All u gay lords are HATING ON SILVA AND FEDOR iff they arent great then who is? ANd i think ur RIDING HENDO WITHOUT SHOCKS or VASELINE because he lost already to SILVA so y are u going so hard for him to have a rematch? AND also u didnt answer me when i said BISPING is a nobody however Franklin is a somebody but thats 1. And its funny how u call the Forest fight boring or whatever meanwhile u probaly were looking forward to it. I dont know how a GAY LORD as yourself could talk as if ANDERSON is a nobody or overrated. WHO IS GOOD TO U ? I BET KALIB STARNES IS UR FAVORITE

Hendo should be able to get his rematch vs anderson, he is a legend in the sport and has fought everyone, they owe it to him, why do lidell and randy get all the fights they want/quick title shots with no questions asked?
by J.Mile on Sep 15, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions
Hendo has already fought him recently and lost. i have seen no improvement in Hendo game that makes me think the results would be different second time round.

Exactly tells these Turds.. Hendo has improved enough to c ANDERSON.. Only thing he threw in the BISPING fight was a right hand.. it just so happened that it landed but u think he would keep coming forward on anderson? YEA OK
by zack on Sep 15, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
because they earned it, just like Hendo! I mean if these guys were showing signs of wear and falling apart losing 4of5(like Chuck, Wandy, Big Tim) then no, you don’t give them instant title shots, but if they’re still winning and looking good like Randy, Hendo, & Franklin, then they shouldn’t have to work their way up from the bottom of the barrell again. They’ve paid their dues in the big leagues and shouldn’t have to take a back seat to B-listers who’ve never worn a belt. Nate should be happy to let Dan fight Silva first, cause he’s got a better chance of beating Dan than he does of beating Silva.

the reason why Randy and Lidell fought so many times in the past is because there wern’t as many LHW 4-5 years ago. After their lose the loser was still the top contender in the division

and after Franklin’s loss HE was still the top contender in the division and after Dan’s loss HE IS still the top contender.

If silva wants a Heavy weight why not fight Lesnar? Because Lesnar would break silvas neck with one punch! If siva tried the neck hold while throwing knees with Lesnar he would get put through the mat with a slam! Come on; silva vs. Mir. Silva does take fights he knows he can win, Why not Machita, why not? Because silva knows he would get KO’D Thats why.

i agree that hendo needs a rematch but silva is the pound for pound best fighter, and noone in his weight class can even come close. except hendo but no doubt in my mind that silva will ko his ass this time

Again folks, Dan might lose, but he will not get KOd. He has NEVER BEEN KOd or TKOd..NEVER..not in 32 fights! Anderson & Rampage didn’t KO him. Vitor didn’t KO him. Wandy couldn’t do it in either fight. Even Gilbert “I’ve-kicked-31-opponents’-heads-into-the-6th-row” Yvel couldn’t KO Dan. The man’s chin is made of adamantium.

None of this matters anyway. We all know what Silvaès plans are, and they arenèt to sign another UFC contract. Heèll have 2 more fights, then the UFC will ice him ala Arlovski.

the UFC will ice him??? No way. If he thinks he can get the Jones Jr. fight, he’ll hold off temporarilyon signing another contract (and hopefully challenge Fedor while he’s out from under the UFC’s clutches) but then he’ll be back and the UFC will offer him any amount of money just to keep him off the competitors’ rosters. Not being able to sign Fedor was embarrassing to the UFC but nothing compared to seeing their most dominant champion a
