UFC 106: 'Lesnar vs Carwin' official for Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nov. 21

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today announced its "next big thing" in terms of blockbuster pay-per-view (PPV) shows for the promotion.
UFC 106: "Lesnar vs. Carwin," which we knew was in the works for several weeks, is set to go down at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21. As we already passed along, UFC 106 tickets will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 12 p.m. PT.
It will feature a main event heavyweight title bout between two absolute monsters as champion Brock Lesnar will look to defend his gold for the second time against his newest challenger, Shane Carwin. In addition, "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz is also set to make his return to the Octagon against UFC Hall of Famer, Mark Coleman, after spending nearly a year and a half on the sidelines.
Here's what Lesnar had to say about his undefeated opponent in a recent press release:
"I'm excited to get back in the Octagon on November 21st to defend my title. I’m looking forward to fighting Shane Carwin. He’s undefeated and I’m the man who is going to put an end to that."
And Carwin:
"I was extremely excited when I got the news that I was fighting Brock. I couldn’t even sleep that night. This fight is going to be different for both of us. We’re not used to facing someone who equals us in size. I can see this fight taking place everywhere. We both have wrestling backgrounds, but hopefully we’ll get into some exchanges on the feet too."
There are several other intriguing bouts currently in the works for UFC 106, including the promotional debut of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira against 205-pound heel, Luiz Cane, as well as several welterweight showdowns that could have major implications on the very crowded division.

I like Cane, don’t understand the heel comment at all. The guy has a lot of potential and is on the brink of the top 10, he still has a lot to work on as the Cantwell fight showed but he has excellent striking and a great chin, so the future is bright for him. Hopefully the Lil Nog fight will show whether he can cut it against top 10 competition, whatever happens I’d like to see him fight Thiago Silva next.

David – if you’ve heard his interviews and things then you’d see the heel comment. His prefight stuff too.
Guyverbob- He’ll be in the top ten soon enough. He’ll lose this fight though

lots of ppl been saying carwin has what it takes to beat lesnar, ufc 106, we’ll get to see it. This fight is like godzilla vs king kong. Even though they’re both wrestlers, I see this being a quick fight, someone is gonna get KO/TKO’ed. This fight can go either, but carwin has shown more destructive fists than Lesnar. Carwin ftw!

haha godzilla vs. king kong. i hope they beef up the flooring in the octagon. somebody is def. going to get ktfo. i would be surprised if this makes it the distance.

this is going to be a legendary PPV, two of my absolute faves (Brock and Tito) are fighting, they will draw a ton of fans..

This will rival UFC 100 in PPV buys, Brock and Tito are both huge draws and Carwin has done an excellent job in promoting the Lesnar fight, which is why he got this fight in the first place while Tito has done a great job as usual at promoting himself. Add Lil Nog-Cane and you have a sick card with big name fighters and fights. I’m amazed that some people were actually complaining about this show last week.

What do you guys think the odds will be? Brock 2:1 favorite? or not that big?
by Skope on Sep 14, 2009 11:22 PM EDT reply actions
Ya I am thinking they might start at closer to 1.7 even and then move towards 1.3ish when people bet on carwin.
by Skope on Sep 14, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions
If I can grab a bet on Brock better than -130, Im doing it. On the other hand if the handicappers overestimate the advantage and I can get Carwin at +180 or better im going for that.I believe the correct line is around 1.5.
by Skope on Sep 14, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I admire Carwin’s attitude and lifestyle. I’d definitely prefer to have someone like him as champion over that disrespectful no-class ape that’s wearing the belt now. But I think Lesnar’s got the advantage here. Either way, I’ll be surprised if the fight makes it to Round 2.

I agree, I am a Carwin fan & would love to see him as the heavyweight Mesiah but chances are, something is gonna happen in round 1, maybe round 2 that will land one of the 2 on their ass for the rest of the night. It’s gonna be hard, but WAR CARWIN!!!

No Way that’s gonna happen.Lesnar couldn’t even take out Mir in one round.Carwin is much stringer than Mir so I can see him lasting to at least the 2nd round. The only way this fight ends in the first is if Carwin pulls out another one of his trademark 2 minutes or less knockout victories and I for one will piss myself laughing if he does it coz I hate that douchebag Lesnar

I’ll be very curious to see who looks stronger between Tito and Colman. Both were monsterously huge overpowering beasts in their weight classes in their day. Tito could easily have been a heavyweight and Coleman could manhandle all the other heavyweights of his day. He still looked really strong against Shogun, even when totally gassed out. But he doesn’t look his old self since he’s dropped to 205. We know Randy completely overpowered Tito, so seeing how Coleman looks against him might tell us if he could hang with Randy on the ground. They were the two most dominant wrestlers in the sport in the pre-Brock era and I’ve always wondered whether Captain America was as strong as The Hammer or just smarter and more durable.

I hope Carwin win – I like him way more than Brock…Carwin is an engineer and works full time..RESPECT!!! technique over comes power, I believe Carwin has the skill to beat Brock..
by Tim-chida on Sep 14, 2009 11:54 PM EDT reply actions
Murr and Herring also both tried to claim that ‘technique over power’ advantage too, and look what they got for their troubles. And I promise you they both have far more technique than Barney Carwin. Barney’s only shot is to close his eyes and hope to land a huge KO punch.

Im gonna be rooting for Carwin in this. But Brock is brock. As much as I dislike him I cant deny hes a legit champion.
Carwin has far more experience. But hes never faced a guy brocks size or someone with possibly better wrestling than him.
Then again neither has brock.
Plus Im pretty sure Carwin probably has more ko power than brock does. So who knows. We might be able to see brocks chin get legitametely tested here.
Gonna give carwin a slight advantage. Hopefully his wrestling credentials will keep the fight standing where im sure he has the edge over brock.

I am with you on this one a-dog. I don’t know if youe people forgot but Brock Lesnar was a Div. I, He was a 106-5 as a DIV. I wrestler, in 4 years. He has championship after championship after, all-american, after accolades after accolades. He was a DIV I beast. A pure athlete! Carwin was a Div II wrestler. That is like comparing your local community college to the Florida Gators in college football.
I don’t like Brock as well but Carwin has to exploit the fact that Lesnar doesn’t like to get hit, while defending a takedown that only Couture( an Olympic Wrestler and amazing strategic planner) was abel to quell. He has the hands to KO Lesnar, thats obvious. LEsnar has been rocked by less formidable power punchers in Randy and Mir. The question is will he be able to do it or attempt to do it and not getting taken down and pounded like a piece of venison…Gonzaga was having his way with him when he got sloppy and KO’d. Lesnar hasn’t gotten sloppy since his loss to Mir. This truly is going to be a punchers chance fight. I know a lot of people shit on Gonzaga but I think Gonzaga on a good day would match up really well with Lesnar. To bad he has been so inconsistent since being mentaly broken by Randy.

da monkey you are clueless, it doesnt work that way just because brock wrestled div 1, and carwin div 2. so a NCAA div 1 champion like kosckeck, should be able to outwrestle someone who never even wrestled high school like GSP right?
by curly on Sep 15, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
I have no clue other then the fact that I wrestled 8 years. GSP is the exception to the rule! There is a lot of things about GSP that are normal! Use an everyday example instead of the exception. Think of the elite wrestlers in the UFC…Brock, Rashad, John Fitch, Josh Koscheck and Henderson(to name a few) all Division I wrestlers, all super dominate wrestlers in the UFC. Every now and again there are exceptions. Comparing the level of Division I to Div. II is crazy. Take any sport and compare Div. I to Div. II and tell me it doesn’t work like that. Div. I football-Florida, Texas, USC, Alabama, Penn State. Div II football-GRand Valley,Abilene Christian,North Alabama, Central Washington, Bloomsburg. Baseball Div I. Cal. State, Texas, Virginia U, LSU…Div II-Mesa State, Domincian, West Chester, Ashland….Shall I keep Going? So If you want to discuss Clueless I would say your idea of comparing GSPto overall statistics, you are clueless. FACTS are DIV I schools are superior in competition and talen. That is why they are div. I! That is why there are millions of dollars involved in DIV. I schools. That is why Div. I schools are on the tv day in and day out. So yes as an overall whole IT WORKS that way.

My thoughts exactly, I checked out the Gonzaga fight again just to see if i can find something good about SHANE Carwin and just looked even more horrible than the first time i saw this fight. His punches look really slow and sloppy, he almost looks like he’s nervous and just learning to fight. He actually gets caught with 3 RIGHTS in a row. I dont know Why people think Carwin has a shot. THIS IS gonna BE a short night. BROCK BY DESTRUCTION FIRST ROUND!!

Carwin has experience facing bums compared to who brock has fought. Carwin doesnt have better hands. Just because he knocked out BUMS doesnt mean he can box. Brock stood up with an O.K. boxer in Randy and when he stood up with Crazy Horse he sent him rolling 20 ft with one punch. CARWIN HAS NO SHOT

“Far more experience”?!? Dude! Brock logged more cage time in the Herring fight than Carwin has in all his fights combined. True Brock has only spent a little over 30 min in the cage, but it was against some of the most experienced and accomplished HWs in the sport. Carwin has a grand total of 12 minutes experience in MMA, with only 3 of those minutes in the UFC and only 1 minute in the cage with a ranked fighter. He’s never been in a fight that lasted 3 minutes…how does that make him “experienced.” I hate Lesnar and am praying that Carwin knocks his brock off. But you can hardly count Carwin’s 44 second encounters with no-names as “experience”.
by shonuff on Sep 15, 2009 1:59 AM EDT reply actions
I think Brock will win by gnp in the second but I wouldnt be suprised if Carwin lands a big shot and stops Brock early. I didnt think Carwin had a chance in the Gonzaga fight and he made him sit indian style. This fight wont go past the third round. Also, Tito is gnp Coleman for three round and get the UD. I got Lil Nog by UD or submission. Cane is good but not great and Lil Nog will beat him in every aspect of the fight.

Carwin stands a punchers chance. Comparing Carwins wrestling to Lesnars is not a legitimate comparison. That added to the fact that Lesnar has definitely tuned his wrestling skills for MMA as shown against a BJJ black belt in Mir if the fight goes to the ground it is over. Brock has a slight reach advantage and does have power in his hands.
This issue is that Carwin is going to try to press Lesnar just as he did Gonzaga as it is the only chance he has to use his KO power. This will have him moving forward on Lesnar trying to punch which leaves him way open to Brocks shot. If he waits for Lesnar to try to keep it standing he will just end up on his back again. I was impressed with how Lesnar waited against Mir at 100. He stood and waited for Frank to move in on him then took him down. Same thing will happen here.
Anything can happen but once Carwin is on his back he is going to be in big trouble.
Lesnar 2nd round brutal GnP TKO
by ASR on Sep 15, 2009 2:39 AM EDT reply actions
ASR; I agree w/you except that Carwin should take this one. Too tight in my opnion to make a bet on it but I think Shane is gonna push the pace. Do not let Lesnar charge your ass because you are going down but without giving Lesnar that chance, Carwin should take this. He is way more technical than that big ape.
by neeko on Sep 15, 2009 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions
I am not a Lesnar fan by any stretch! I don’t see where or how you could say that Carwin is the more technical fighter of the 2. His punches/boxing is ok. Gonzaga was out boxing him completely before he got caught with a hail mary, in the midst of standing up. Lesnar has decent stand up, not great but a little less then average. Gonzaga controlled Carwin in the one clinch they had and easily took him down. Lesnar is hands down the far more superior wrestler. I am using Gonzaga vs. Carwin because that is the only ranked fighter that Carwin has fought. Lesnar has fought all ranked fighters with the excpetion of Herring(who is a wll proven gatekeepr) and as improved with each and every fight. So I am just curious, where do you see Carwin as the more technical of the 2 fighters?

Carwin was hurt but not finished and al it took was one shot from Carwin to finish Gonzaga. We haven’t seen one hit KO from Lesnar. I say if they fight standing up Carwin KO’s Lesnar.
WAR CARWIN!!!
by Skelow on Sep 15, 2009 3:41 AM EDT reply actions
That is the point. Carwin would need to be trying to block the shot and trying to KO Lesnar. He cannot do both at the same time. I love how you are trying to diminish Lesnar due to him not having a one hit KO. If you ask me he did, on the ground in 100 with that one vicious uppercut. The fight was over after that.
Carwin is out of his league in this one.
by ASR on Sep 15, 2009 7:47 AM EDT up reply actions
This is tough, Carwin definately has the power in his fists to knock anyone out. However, I am not 100% convinced with him. Gab got caught fair and square in the last fight but Shane also got caught and looked slow and clumsy (to start with).
The one thing Brock isn’t is slow and clumsy, he is extremely quick for a big guy, just look at his hand speed at the end against Mir. I think Brock is going to be too quick for Shane and the only chance Shane has is by catching him with a punch, and that is do-able, don’t get me wrong, but I think Brock is too clever for that.
I mean apart from Gab who has Shane fought of any worth??? Lets be fair on Brock here, the quality of his opponents have been far greater. Randy went the distance with Big Nog, but didn’t get passed the 2nd with Brock, I know, before everybody jumps on me, that you can’t compare like that, but it does show the quality of Brock.
Also, I think if it goes past the 2nd Carwin will get tired, they are some big old muscles there on his arms and they require alot of oxygen. He relies on fast knockouts and I think he will tire if he doesn’t get it.
I think Lesnar by the 3rd by stoppage. I think Carwin needs more experience.
by Nuts on Sep 15, 2009 6:56 AM EDT reply actions
Mir beats a very green Brock, a walking disease in Nog and then when Brock beats Mir in a rematch and people act like Brock is unbeatable? I love Randy but he has slowed down considerably so beating him was also not impressive…my point is Brock is a farce!!! Carwin wins this by knock out. Chuck did worse to Randy and Vera did worse to Mir…
by Robert(1) on Sep 15, 2009 8:06 AM EDT reply actions
Apply your same critique to Fedor, Anderson Silva or GSP and you can make either of those three look like “a farce” too.

Anderson cuts threw top contenders, as does GSP. And Fedor by many fighters themselves including Penn state that he is one of the best. The best part about this is that all these guys coming on here saying how Carwin will beat Lesnar will be talking about how weak shane was after Lesnar beats him so they do not have to give Lesnar his props.
People are still talking about how his jaw is suspect. How he got rocked by Randy and Mir. News flash people they were both at one time the HW champ. Everyone gets rocked. If you hold that against a fighter then there are no good fighters.
Carwin could land one decent shot on Brock at he beginning and then get destroyed by Lesnar(a very possible outcome) and people will say how Lesnar got lucky. Everyone gets rocked people. If Carwin deserves a title shot after getting rocked bad by Gonza and landing one good shot then give Lesnar his props people.
by ASR on Sep 15, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions
So you got Lesnar! I got Carwin along with many other people! This is how all fights should be a coin toss, Because with these two giants it can easily go either way! I only wish more fights would be this evenly matched.
by nicky on Sep 15, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I do not have an issue with people straight out picking Carwin. He is a HW UFC fighter and stands a punchers chance in this fight. This issue will come should Lesnar beat Carwin when most, I am not saying you, people will all the sudden talk about how Carwin is a can and has only fought cans so they do not have to give Lesnar credit. Example, Lesnar beats Couture people say he beat up an old man. NOG beats Couture after Lesnar and doesnt finish him as Brock did and people are saying he is back to his old form, looks great and deserves a title shot. Couture did not get younger between the fights.
