Randy Couture vs Brandon Vera officially announced for UFC 105 main event on Nov. 14

When the UFC was in desperate need for a marquee name for their UFC 105 main event, it was only "Natural" for them to call upon five-time Octagon champion Randy Couture.
The promotion today announced that the former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion will officially make his return to the 205-pound division to battle former heavyweight striker Brandon Vera on Nov. 14 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England.
And it won't cost you a dime as UFC 105 will air stateside via tape delay FOR FREE on Spike TV.
From Naytch:
"I would love to be a six-time UFC champion, to set the bar very high in that regard, and that’s what I want to accomplish at 205lbs ... I believe I have to tools to win back the (title). Brandon Vera is the first of these challenges at 205lbs. It would have been very nice to be the big guy in the Octagon for the first time in years but, having trained with Brandon and competed against him in wrestling many years ago, I know that he is as big and as powerful as I am."
Couture is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102 in Portland just last month. With a new six-fight contract and rapidly spinning hands on his biological clock, Captain America isn't going to be wasting any time hanging around on the sidelines.
Like "The Natural," Vera was also in action at the August 29 event. "The Truth" battered former TUF contestant Krzysztof Soszynski on the main card en route to a judges decision.
The talented Muay Thai striker is no stranger to both divisions and like Couture, will be looking to secure a spot among the title contenders in the talent-rich light heavyweight division.
Some "Truth:"
"It will be an honor and a privilege to fight a living legend like Randy Couture. He has been someone that I have looked up to and I can't wait to get in there in November. Even after my first UFC win back in 2005, I was begging the UFC to put me in with a legend like a Chuck Liddell or a Randy Couture. I always knew those are the sorts of guys who would bring the best out of me and, finally, I have my chance to prove myself against a true legend in the sport."
UFC 105 will feature hometown hero, Michael "The Count" Bisping, in the co-main event opposite Denis Kang, as well as a welterweight battle between Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim. It will air on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET on fight night.

Vera in a main event? This stinks worse than stinky finger’s stinky fingers.

Is it just me or is Couture just as garbage as vera. He was in 205, got KTFO, so he moved up to HW where the only challenge was Tim Sylvia. Now, at HW, he got KFTO so he is dropping back down. I’m sooo tired of seeing this guy on ‘pound for pound’ lists… it disgusts me….
by sigpesal on Sep 14, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s just you.
His only challenge was Sylvia?? I think he had a tougher time with Gonzaga. He also put up a good fight against a 280lb Lesnar, and also put up one of the most exciting fights against Nog. I think you should start watching mma, instead of looking at Sherdog stats.

Take it easy the man is 46 years old sig back in the day he could compete against anyone and every MMA fighter from Wandy, Henderson, Fedor, Gracie,Chuck, hughes….would all have called him one of the best pound for pound fighters a few years back the fact that he can still compete at 46 against the best and since he’s a legend he gains more respect than some believe he should but that should not disgust you look at fedor who is on the pound for pound top three list now and he has done nothing to deserve that honor?

haha… i’ve watched mma since the monkey stomp in UFC 1 son… when Couture originally moved up to HW Sylvia had the belt… and Gonzaga was next in line… aka… there was no competition… and the original reason he retired was bc he kept getting his teeth smashed at 205… it just bugged me that he had the belt in a horrible divsion but because he was old as balls people kept saying he was one of the best pound for pound fighters.. when in fact he couldn’t even compete at his natural weight class.. now he is going to beat up on a can in the 205 lb weight class in order to promote a #1 contender fight or even possibly a title shot… c’mon man… i respect him for what he has done for the sport but just because you can ‘compete’ doesn’t mean you should… and it DEF doesn’t mean your one of the best in the world…

and PS… yes Fedor disgusts me as well… but back to my point… when he was champ who were the top contenders? AA and Tim Sylvia? Where are those guys now? thank u!
by sigpesal on Sep 14, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmmm where are those guys now…last I heard, one of them was kickiing the crap out of Brandon Vera.
The fact that the HW division was weak at that time Randy was champ doesn’t lessen the fact that Randy beat the best HWs the UFC had to offer. He was the clear and undisputed #1 HW this side of the Pacific. And if the HW division had a reasonable size cap like all the other weight classes, Randy would still easily be #2. The fact that the last year or two has seen the division evolve into into a freakin’ monster movie doesn’t lessen Randy’s skills. He can still hold his own with anybody in the world near his “natural weight”. Lesnar’s got 60 lbs on Randy. That’s like saying B.J.Penn is overrated because he can’t handle Rampage Jackson.

they offered the fight against couture to Rashad Evans but he turned it down. Most of the other top 205ers are tied up with current fights, and i personally think this fight does have title implications.

I agree, this is lazy matchmaking, did Joe Silva draw these names out of a hat. It looks very much a case of “this card is falling apart, throw the Brits a bone with Randy, that’ll shut em up”.
This is typical of what we in Britain have had to put up with lately at UFC shows. The last four shows have all gone on sale without a main event. So instead of the UFC building a card around a solid main event, they’re always scrambling trying to cobble together a last minute headliner.
For me Randy in this random matchup doesn’t save this show. To me a it’s a meaningless matchup as a win for either man does nothing really to advance their careers. I’d have to see Couture in a much more meaningful fight to be persuaded to buy a ticket as the rest of the card (for me anyway) is so dire, so I’ll be sticking to my guns and not attending.
If some of the rumoured fights had come off and the Ufc had given this as a main card……
Couture vs Vera
Nate vs Hendo
Lil Nog vs Cane
Bizzzzzbing vs Kang
Hardy vs Kim
…..I would have had no complaints as that would have been great, and for a numbered UFC show with no title fight (which we were promised), I really dont think that’s asking a lot. But to still have Bizzzzbing (coming off a monumental KO loss) and Kang (1-1 in the UFC) as a co main event is taking the p!ss a bit.

With the exception of a very lazy headliner, this reeks of a cage rage card.
I’m half expecting the UFC to not bother sending Buffer over and just wheel out that god awful cockney MC who used to wear the exceptionally rancid suits in cage rage.
However, I don’t want to appear as if I’m ‘hating’ on this event, yes there will be some undoubtedly exciting match’s, but other than maybe Hardy vs Stun Gun, I see nothing on that card of any relevance to any division, and even the example I gave is questionable.

this definitely advances either fighter in the LHW picture, i dont see how you think it wont, the ufc has randy locked down for the rest of his career, and they paid good money to do so, now all they need is an excuse (win against Vera) to put him in a title shot for big ppv numbers, if vera beats randy he deserves a significant bump up in competition, if not a contender matchup, or someone like the loser of rampage v. rashad or loser of machida v. shogun

Tell me i’m wrong? What dont you agree with?
So old man Couture (16-10) gets added against perennial underachiever Brandon Vera and we should all break out the Champagne and dance naked round the streets??? Come on! This really isn’t a great card, I’m just asking for a bit more when the Ufc comes here, not just scraps. I wanted to attend this show but for me it isn’t worth the four hour trip and £100 for a decent seat.

attack, NOthing will ever make you happy! Instead of bitching at the UFC, complain to your cheap ass fellow Brits who dont buy UFC ppv’s. If Brits owuld actually spend money and purchase ppv’s when they come to the UK…UFC superstars that get ppv percentage dollars would come fight in y our Country…but since you guys dont spend anything, you should consider yourself fortunate that a legend like Couture is coming to your country.
This card isnt even bad! Stop your bitching! If it was on ppv, I would buy it! Vera vs. Couture will be very competitive and its a match up between 2 legit LHW. Add Big Nog vs. Cane and Bisping/Kang…you have 3 solid fights…I dont know why I bother, people like you will never be happy anyway!

there is no such thing as PPV in Europe (there is) no one buys it… that’s why the UFC has to make TV deals, the UFC makes a ton of money on that and it comes out to so many more

Decide which side of the fence you’re on before taking potshots at me champ ;-)
As RoB says PPV dont work in Europe, so get a new argument, that one’s tired. It’s been going for nearly 30 years in America, I think it would have caught on here by now if it was going to. UFC’s go out at 3 in the morning here, so how can you expect anyone to pay £30 for that I dont know. No American would pay for that and that is a FACT! You guys wont even pay for British PPV’s when they go out in the afternoon your end.

I thought Lil Nog and Cane are on this card, has there been a change? If you get that fight along with the Couture/Vera , Bisping/Kang and Hardy/Kim then its not really a bad card. You dont have a true ‘main event’ but it will be a decent card.
I think their plan was to have Nate/Hendo as the main event but Hendo seems to be holding out and they rushed to replace that fight by throwing Couture on the card.
If Vera wins this fight, where does that put him at 205? Is he one win away against a top tier fighter (Evans/Rampage/Franklin/Forrest etc) from gettin a title shot?

I see Randy winning this fight off course, but I really hope he is able to finish Vera. A decision win over Vera is good, but since Randy is great, he has to finish Vera for it to be a solid win. After Randy wins does anyone think Randy will get the next title shot against the winner of Shogun/Machida or will Randy have to wait after Evans/Rampage fights Machida?

kevin, how u feeling about nate?
im worried homie!~ he’s always trying too hard for the sub.
he was suppossed to keep a gap[with kicks and reach] against joe daddy.. no clinching or ground game needed.. same reason he lost to guida..
i really hope he keeps it standing!~
nate shouldn’t have lost to joe or guida.. he got stubborn.
nate has amazing tdd. with his reach, he should be able to keep it standing. especially against short fighters.
with his boxing, he should be able to out strike melvin for a tko win. if not tko, he should be able to win on points..
nate is losing the same way nick did in the ufc..
he has refused to give up on the sub attempts, and work something different..

I’m not worried Stink, but if he stands with Guillard he could get KO’d. I think a quick submission is his only way to go!
by kevin on Sep 14, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Nate’s best/easiest chance at winning this fight is to take Melvin to the ground. Sure, nate has the reach advantage, but Melvin has the speed, power and explosiveness advantages. I can’t see Nate putting Melvin to sleep with one punch but Melvin is capable of putting anyone to sleep with one punch. Nate could try to pick him apart from the outside, but Melvin will be leaping in right thru nate’s jabs to try and land vicious hooks.
Nate better not lose 3 in a row. The fact that Melvin lasted 3 rounds with Gleison Tibau has me worried for Nate in this fight – at least more so than I should be with him going against Melvin
by ViolentMike on Sep 14, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, unlike guida and joe daddy, melvin’s sub defense isn’t that great..
but~
like u said melvin has the power advantage..
imo~[and many] nate doesn’t do well against strong short doods, when hitting the ground..
sure nate has a good chance to pull off the sub, but if he’s not successful, he will end up losing another decison[just like his bro]
imo- he should keep a gap and box!~ no clinch~ no td’s..
by stinky~fingers on Sep 14, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
vm, u can’t see nate putting melvin to sleep with one punch?
i sure can.. nate hits focking hard.. plus he’s got those stingers like his bro..
he could easily daze melvin enough to pull off a tko..
nate HAS to use his reach in his advantage! not to melvins advantage..
short, strong, powerful and exploisive fighters have an easy time holding and controlling lanky fighters on the ground..[ie,guida,joe]

I think ur wrong stinky..
Melvin is so explosive and fast that he should dominate standing, when your as tall and skinny as Nate is you lose speed/explosiveness/power.. Melvin is gonna be able to take him down whenever he wants or keep it standing for as long as he wants..

roberto,~ nate has waay better stand up than melvin!~

with rampage vs rashad on hold, randy is seeking the oportunity to get a quick win at lhw and squeeze into a title shot before the true #1 contender match..

The Shad/Page match isn’t going to happen before March, which means the earliest they could fight Machida would be july. I think Rampage is the only one who’d get the shot anyway, dont see the UFC wanting to hype Rashad vs Machida after the last one was so embarassingly one sided.
Who else is in contention?
Forrest – No
Thiago Silva – No (looked good against Jardine but lost badly against Machida.)
Jardine – No
Tito – No (lost easily last time)
Lil Nog – Possibly, needs two wins though.
Randy has defo gotta be in the mix.

i have to disagree, ralphie..
while it is possible, i don’t see franklin getting the next crack..
franklin needs to win a fight at 205 against a top 5 fighter to get a title shot..
if franklin beats vitor[and he will] that puts him on a 2 fight win streak.. problem is, both fights were at 195 against fighters that will be fighting at 185 in the future[wand,vitor]..
while having back2back wins over wand and vitor is very impressive, the win against wand was too close of a fight and who’s to say rich wins in dominant fashion, let alone win at all..
i say if franklin wins, give him a top 205er and go from there..
if randy wins, we will most likely see him fighting for the belt, while rampage plays b.a~

How about Couture vs Franklin if Rich wins against Vitor? Sounds fair to me.

Assuming Randy gets by Vera as well (and thats a tough fight to call right there).

if they both win?
sounds fine to me!~
then it wouldn’t be that bad of a look, giving either a title shot with a win..

Ya that would work guys.
But I really hope the Rampage/Rashad fight happens sometime in January. Then it would make it possible for a Rampage title shot in March or so, since Rampage will take zero damage against hype-shad.
Rampage/Machida is the #1 match I want to see out of the whole LHW division, even though I’m pumped for Shogun to give it a try.
by Skope on Sep 14, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rampage is my homeboy from my High School and I’m a huge fan. But what’s he got against Machida? Good takdowns and top control? Sure, but he hasn’t used his since he discovered how hard he could KO folks with his hands. Rampage is definitely a harder hitter than Couture, but thos big looping outside punches will never get anywhere near Machida. And Couture has even better takedowns and ground control than Rampage…therefore, while I don’t think Couture could beat Rampage, I think Couture has a better shot at beating Machida than Rampage does because he’s smart enough not to try and stand with Machida, whereas Rampage will be inclined to make the same mistake Rashad and Thiago made.

Rampage vs Rashad or Shogun are much more interesting matchups than Rampage vs Machida until Rampage redisovers his wrestling roots.

I thought that warm up fights were a thing of the past? Randy will roll Vera and hopefully retire him. I think Randy will do well at 205 for a second. I’m sure he will win this fight then maybe fight another winnable bout, on his way to the Dragon. That will be the last big fight of his career. That would be cool to see him fight Shogun after Machida beats him.

I’m thinking if Randy can get by Vera; his next fight should be against the winner of Ortiz vs Coleman.

Coleman vs. Couture is a broken hip waiting to happen. Sponsored by Centrum Silver, Depends and Metamucil. They would have to have the fight at 3:00 in the afternoon so they have a chance to get to dinner by 4:00.

I think the winner of Coleman/Ortiz should fight Franklin or Forrest.

that wud be sick Wand & Randy!!!That fight been talked about for a long ass time when Chuck got his ass beat in the Pride tournament,Randy was the UFC champ & he wanted to fight Wand after he won it!
by d*locc on Sep 14, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that’s the kinda matches Randy should be getting. Other legends that he hasn’t had a chance to fight yet like Wandy, CroCop, Coleman, Hendo, and other former champions like Rashad and Rampage….not wannabe overhyped wankers like Vera who’ve never won fight against a ranked opponent.
by shonuff on Sep 15, 2009 3:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Vera better kick Randy square in the head the first 10 seconds. That’ll be his only chance. After that, Randy by clinch then GNP.

you ppl make me laugh. most of you are NEVER happy. i dont care whos on a ufc card. all fighter’s can put on a good fight AND a bad fight, depends what happends on the night.
every1 was cryin about silva over his 2 fights before completely destroying forrest, now ppl love him again. same with machida.
every1 cryed about the ufc95 card. fare play that the names on the card was a shambles, but the fights were great. i had a great night there.
all im sayin is ye, its great to see names but great fight’s are so much nicer.
my tickets are ordered and i cant wait.

Cr@p argument! That’s like saying you’d rather watch Halifax take on Torquay coz last time they had a three all draw, rather than watching Man Utd vs Liverpool coz last time they had a goalless draw.
Give me the top stars every time, so what if they have a snoozer, that can happen in sport, at least you’re seeing the best of the best perform. If I wanna see cards with no star names and average British talent, I’ll go watch cage rage, that aint what I watch the UFC for.

Mine are ordered too!!! im veras biggest fan and love randy, so its a quality match for me, completley agree with andy-roo…iv been to all uk events since 2007 and 95 was possibly the best card, performance wise!!!! after seeing frankin v okami bore fight id prefer lesser names in amazing fights

This fight is an insult to Couture and he stands to gain absolutely nothing from it. Vera has never won a fight against a ranked opponent. (Mir was a sloppy undercard loser when they fought.). If Randy beats an over-inflated product of UFC’s BS hype factory like Vera it won’t even warrant a footnote on his resume. And if Vera happens to catch him on the chin with a lucky shot, losing to an unranked inconsistent non-contender will be an ugly stain on Randy’s legacy, not to mention hurting his marketability for his last 5 fights. If he loses to Vera people will say he’s washed up and nobody will pay to see him fight the top 5 guys in LHW.
This is one fight Randy should have refused. It’s a complete waste of his limited remaining time in the sport!

Ain’t it funny how as soon as Anderson sees Vera getting a shot at Randy in front of millions of people on free TV, he suddenly pops up and says he’s fine and ready to fight a Heavyweight.
You listening Joe Silva? Dana?
Nobody gives a crap about Randy vs a wishy washy undercard fighter like Vera.
Give us Randy vs Anderson. The fans want it, Randy wants it, the Spider wants it. It will send your TV ratings through the roof, overshadow the boxing match, and put you in a prime position to leverage the big networks. It’s good business all the way around with no risk of damaging the future marketability of either fighter.
