Report: Randy Couture vs Brandon Vera UFC 105 main event under consideration

couture_vera_105

Former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Randy Couture (16-10), could return to the 205-pound division to take on Brandon Vera (11-3) in the main event at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, according to BloodyElbow.com.

The report indicates that UFC sources have confirmed the showdown, which was cobbled together when the lightweight championship match between division kingpin BJ Penn and number one contender Diego Sanchez was booked for UFC 107 on Dec. 12 to compensate for the postponed fight between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Rashad Evans.

In fact, the report indicates that Evans turned down the opportunity to challenge "The Natural," forcing the promotion to seek "The Truth."

More on this breaking news shortly.

UFC 105 will feature hometown hero, Michael "The Count" Bisping, in the co-main event opposite Denis Kang, as well as a welterweight battle between Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim. It will air on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET on fight night.

I got Vera knocking Randy out!
.
Natural shadow, the “king kevin” was a joke buddy. And yes, I was saying the whole “thug act” is partly made up, Kimbo is a very smart guy who when not in a hostile situation comes across humble and well spoken!
As far as online porn, I’m the furthest from an authority, but there was a whole story about “icey Mike” (kimbo’s manager/longtime friend) last year saying how he’s his manager and doesn’t take a % because of his porn empire he doesn’t have to. He has like 50 sites (estimate) and “reality kings” is considered the biggest online porn company around. Not trying to be a dick (as usual you guys love to hate me) trying to educate you on the fact that Kimbo isn’t some stupid brotha!

rashad did the same when he was supposed to fight chuck liddell after chuck got injured rashad preferred to not fight at all instead of getting a replacement

what a lil bit@h

This is such a random match up to me. Vera can KO Randy and Randy can just as easily UD Vera. Whatever…

by Dsmith on Sep 13, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

i don’t like this match up,would of definitely preferred rashad/couture to this but w.e

by ufcaddict on Sep 13, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree with Dsmith, this fight does nothing for either the fighter or the fans. Yarn!

by TheSaint on Sep 13, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Vera easily wins a striking match, he’s also faster with a big reach advantage! bad matchup for Randy…

by RoBerto on Sep 13, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The UFC are getting desperate. Seeing things like this happen makes you realize even more that everything comes down to them (the UFC) making money on names.
Randy is apparently “promised” a title shot with a win, ’cause he helped to save the show by accepting the bout, and they tried to make a MW title bout between Matt Hughes and The Spider!?

just a bunch of crap!

by RoBerto on Sep 13, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Roberto, I don’t want to see this matchup even though it is “a little” interesting… but to say the UFC only “comes down to making money on names”… is pretty much saying the UFC is out to give the fans what they want to see.. I don’t believe Couture is promised a title shot with a win.. they just want to give Couture a fight he’s happy with and 1 they can make $$$ off of… UFC is NOT ‘desperate’… they are feeling out the fans before ‘inking the deal’

by DAVE A on Sep 14, 2009 2:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Easy one to call. Vera by tko 1st round

by Zim on Sep 14, 2009 3:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I too agree with DSmith, this is just a meaningless matchup and reaks of desperation matchmaking! Every time the UFC sell tickets to a British card now they never have a main event in place, they’re always scrambling to cobble together a matchup at the last minute. This never happens in America!

by attakdog on Sep 14, 2009 4:38 AM EDT up reply actions

The Scrambling for a main event for the last few uk cards put me off buying a ticket through FightClub pre-sale…good point A-Dog!

by JackScratch on Sep 14, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

It might be a little desperate, but random matchups like this that are completely unexpected are welcome as far as im concerned, we usually get 2 good cards a month, whats the big deal with throwing a wild card match up in every once and a while, especially when its someone like Randy? im definately looking forward to seeing Randy drop drop and scrap Vera.

by merv on Sep 14, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Randy demolishes Vera.

by chefdaddy on Sep 13, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Even after the weight cut? I am not all that sure. We will see. An aging man cutting weight doesn’t sound all that promising to me at this point.

by RyanHobbs on Sep 13, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m thinking that that might be more than counterbalanced by Couture’s ability to come up with great strategies and the fact that vera hasn’t been impressive in ……..2…maybe 3 years?

by chefdaddy on Sep 13, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

This fight is lame! I can’t think of a more boring matchup. And it’s an insult to Couture to have to fight a chump like Vera just so the UFC can hype Vera up again and act like he matters to any weight class. I hope Randy turns down this fight. He should be fighting top guys until it’s proven that he can’t hang at that level anymore, then he should fight other past-their-prime legends. He shouldn’t have to put his legacy on the line against guys who still haven’t proven themselves. He should be fighting guys like Wandy, Andy, Machida, Rashad, Hendo, Franklin, CroCop. Personally, I don’t think anybody who’s never had a title belt around their waste or even consistently a top contender deserves to fight a 5 time world Champ who’s still in his prime.

by shonuff on Sep 14, 2009 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

not to mention the fact that Randy is an overwhelming powerhouse at 205. There’s really nobody at that weight that he can’t completely manhandle. If he can get inside Vera’s reach, he’ll snap him like a twig.

by shonuff on Sep 14, 2009 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think this is a fight to show Vera matters at all. Since he dropped weight, he’s been…well…boring. I think this is to give Randy a nice warm up fight (w/o being too much of a gimmee) against someone with a name who they know he’ll beat.

by chefdaddy on Sep 14, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

chubs making more enemies and bringing it to this thread apparently.
Vera is not a big enough name to fight Randy or main event, although it’s hard to think of anyone else at the moment…

Kevin, Nothing in your comment succeeded in “educating” me that Kimbo isn’t “some stupid brotha.” You literally offered no evidence in his defense, whereas there is a plethora of evidence that Kimbo is a dumb thug.

I think Vera can do it if he comes with gas and the fierceness he did in his first fightsm but I also could see Randy getting a UD or maybe a tko late in the fight but I would rather see Vera take it and really come into his own skills.

by Noobsaibot on Sep 14, 2009 4:53 AM EDT up reply actions

so now Rashad turns down fights too? What is with these guys? We need more guys like Kos, I’m not a fan of his but he’ll fight anyone any where even if it’s once a friggin month! I’m sick and tired of the “won’t fight training partners” won’t fight on short notice" and the best “I have a title shot next so I’ll take a year off to cash it in instead of staying active.”

by kevin on Sep 13, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

just wana know who is taking a year off to get a title shot?

by zack on Sep 13, 2009 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

no one in tis instance buddy, my bad.
Rampage duck Machida (title shot)
Rampage took forever to fight Forrest
Evans ducking couture (who I think he’d dominate) to fight a chump who in my opinion hasn’t lived up to his hype since coming to the UFC. I was heated zack, my bad, just sick of fighters turning fights down!

by kevin on Sep 13, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess he doesn’t want to risk a loss or injury because he wants to beat Rampage so bad. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

by DSmith on Sep 13, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

so what about him turning down fight with rampage after jardine fight (i think)

by kevin on Sep 13, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

so kevin your saying that after rampage ko’d eastman, ko’d liddell than dominated hendo you didnt think he looked good? i agree that after that he’s been inconsitant but to say you havent been impressed just sounds ignorant

by Jared on Sep 13, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

you gotta think about it like this. the rashad rampage fight has been getting built up for so long now and rashad really wants to fight rampage. say he fought randy on this card, say he tweeks something in the fight and has to take a month or so off then rampage comes in ready to fight in feb rashad wouldnt be ready and the fight would get pushed back even further

by Phil on Sep 13, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Kev- that on Rampage’s part. I want to say Page said he he needed to have jaw surgery after the Jardine fight. I remember him saying it on the Dana vlog in the locker room right after the fight.

by DSmith on Sep 13, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel what your saying, the possible Evans- Coutoure fight would have been 100x better for the UFC and the fans than this Vera fight. Im not feeling it either bro how guys are ducking fights for whatever reason (money or otherwise)

by zack on Sep 13, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

there is nothing to clank down on Rampage for.. he’s done whatever the UFC’s wanted him to do!
I don’t really see the big deal, he’s gonna fight Rashad anyway..

by RoBerto on Sep 13, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean if they really wanted him to fight Rashad right away they wouldn’t have offered him the fight against Jardine.. then if they really wanted him to fight Lyoto they wouldn’t have offered him the season on TUF against Rashad!

Bottom line, blame the UFC if anything

by RoBerto on Sep 13, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

This is the same thing as when the UFC had the Chuck/Rashad fight booked and then Chuck got hurt and tried to offer Rashad a fight with James Irvin. Rashad was already training for hard for Chuck and wanted that opportunity so he decided to wait for it. The same can be said here…the fight with Rampage is what he’s training for right now. He’s focused 100% on Rampage and Rampage only. To take a fight with Randy would force him to divert his focus and then risk getting injured and postponing the fight with Rampage. Remember how much steam was lsot when the Serra/Hughes fight didn’t happen until months and months after the reality show? It lost all it’s luster and the same would happen here if Rashad fought Randy. This is Rashad’s big advantage over Page right now…Page is concentrating on doing a movie…Rashad is concentrating on knocking his head into Dana’s lap.

Besides…Rashad’s hand speed and power would make the fight against Big Nog look like a tickle fight.

by Buster Bluth on Sep 14, 2009 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m actually quite happy with this main event, sure it’s strange that Vera is the one getting a crack at Randy but it’s great that both are taking a fight on a UK card on short notice. As much as I dislike Vera I have to give the guy credit for fighting Randy, whilst Couture is a legend and is the sort of name us UK fans have been crying out for. It’s an interesting fight that will show whether Couture can still hack it against top LHWs and if Vera is ever going to fulfil his potential and become a star.

Personally I think that Randy will wear Brandon down in the clinch and break him mentally, taking him down at will and controlling the fight. Vera has looked far from a deadly finisher since the Mir fight so I don’t see him stopping Randy.

I’m not going to bash Rashad for not taking this fight as it’s not his fault that Rampage decided to play Mr T instead of fighting in the main event in his hometown, so it wouldn’t make any sense for him to take a tough fight for less money when he has spent 6 weeks filming a reality show to promote his fight with Rampage.

No big surprise that Lil Nog-Cane is at 106 instead of 105, that card is a much bigger priority for the UFC and the UK card is already filled up with UK prospects and journeymen. Everyone who bashed the quality of that card must be feeling pretty silly now.

by David W-S (the only respectable poster named David) on Sep 13, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Pleased for you Dave that you’ll get to see Couture live, that’s the kind of big name we’ve been crying out for. To me though it’s a meaningless matchup as a win for either man does nothing really to advance their careers. I’d have to see Couture in a much more meaningful fight to be persuaded to buy a ticket as the rest of the card for me is so dire, so I’ll be sticking to my guns and not attending.

If some of the rumoured fights had come off and the Ufc had given this as a main card……

Couture vs Vera
Nate vs Hendo
Lil Nog vs Cane
Bizzzzzbing vs Kang
Hardy vs Kim

…..I would have had no complaints as that would have been great, and for a numbered UFC show with no title fight (which we were promised), I really dont think that’s asking a lot. But to still have Bizzzzbing (coming off a monumental KO loss) and Kang (1-1 in the UFC) as a co main event is taking the p!ss a bit.

by attakdog on Sep 14, 2009 5:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Same here mate, if that fight card (or simialr) would of come together I would be buying a ticket now.. I could put up with seeing Bisping yet again for the strength of the top fights further up the card!

by JackScratch on Sep 14, 2009 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Really not much upside in this for Randy. Evans and Rampage are such duckers.

by Britva on Sep 13, 2009 9:46 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, if Randy beats this kid, so what!!! Its not even gonna be worth a footnote on his resume. He has nothing whatsoever to gain and everything to lose fighting an on-and-off up-and-comer like Vera. It’s an insult to ask him to fight someone who’s basically irrelevant to the top 5 slots in the division.

by shonuff on Sep 14, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I really hope this is for free! I wouldn’t pay for this card if I was held at gun point and I most certainly wouldn’t buy a ticket for this if my family was held at gun point. I would have to give’em a kiss and a God Bless because this verging on the realm of an Elite XC event…The UFC should be paying us to watch this event so far.

by frosnt on Sep 13, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions

Subpar fight in my book. I’m not sure why but it just doesn’t appeal to me. Maybe because it is an irrelevant fight, if either win it doesn’t much for either. I don’t think if Vera beats a 2 loss in a row Couture does a whole bunch for his standings in the UFC and Vera isn’t very high on the list either…

by Edgecrusher71 on Sep 13, 2009 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

Are you serious Edgecrusher? Randy’s last two losses have been very competitive fights with 2 of the top 3 or 4 heavyweights on the planet. A win over Randy would be huge for Brandon Vera. And a win by Randy over Vera will catapult him up into title contender, probably another win away from a title shot.

by Adam T. on Sep 13, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I am not dogging on Randy, I love Captain America but I don’t see a win putting Couture anywhere but 2 at the very least but more like 3 wins from a title shot (deservedly getting a title shot that is, he would probably get one sooner because of the money it would pull in which I understand). Now, Kristof vs Randy would be a very quick fight or an insanely dominant performance for Randy but that is not the case against Vera. Was Vera better… you bet but it wasn’t overwhelming in my book. The fight has the potential to be a good fight but it just doesn’t capture my attention or excitement. It is insanely better fight prospect than the idea of Kongo vs Mir though lol.

by Edgecrusher71 on Sep 13, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

lol a fight against Kristof (who vera just beat) would do more for Randy than Vera? Well you guys don’t have to worry, I got Vera by KO!

by kevin on Sep 13, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I meant it was not the case of being extremely one sided when Kristof did fight Vera but I think Couture would destroy Kristof. Sorry, stated poorly.

Would be a great fight. I’m pretty sure that Randy wants to get right back in there and fight. Why are Evans and Rampage duckers? Rampage backed out of the fight to do his movie. They’ll still fight some time in early 2010. I can’t phucking stand Rampage anymore but I wouldn’t call him a ducker. However, he knows that he can’t beat Machida, who he calls La Cheetah. Rampage is just a classless thug and I now have a huge reason to watch his fights, that being to see him get his ass kicked.

I see this one going the same way as Vera-Werdum and Vera-Poopy. Randy is going to push Vera against the cage and beat on him for 3 rounds. I really want Vera to get back to his highlight reel KO self, but it’s looking more and more like that won’t happen unless he fights outclassed nobodies.

by PW on Sep 13, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

For once I agree with you, Lester. This is a crap fight and the worst excuse for a main event they’ve had in a looong time. But lets face it, fighting Randy is the only shot Vera has of seeing his name on a marquee.

I dont think this is a quality main event. Although I dont like Vera and would love to see Randy literally spank him like he did Tito, I think Vera is a little too quick for Randy. When you think about it, the majority of the LHW division is too fast for Randy.

Other News Regarding UFC 105 Main Event via Bloody Elbow via Inside Fights.

Anderson Silva turned down a fight to put his title on the line against Matt Hughes
Rashad Evans turned down the fight against Randy Couture
Dan Henderson wants to fight at UFC 105, but wants a big payday (350,000 to show supposedly)

by "Mr. NC-17" on Sep 13, 2009 10:09 AM EDT reply actions

The Silva/Hughes thing is pretty hard to believe. I could see why Rashad wouldn’t want to fight Randy – Randy isn’t relevant in the LHW division and a win over him doesn’t really do anything for anyone unless hey are an up and comer trying to get a win.
They should give Hendo 250 or 275 to show, and either a 75k or 100k to win.

by El Mexicutioner, formerly The Mexicutioner on Sep 13, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

where did u hear this?

by ruan-fiy on Sep 13, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

-Don’t believe for a second that Hughes was offered a fight with Anderson Silva. What a joke of a fight that would be.
-Evans is waiting to fight Rampage.
-Props to Hendo for wanting more dough. I don’t have a problem with that. But some of his recent comments have been rather annoying. Anderson has no business fighting him and Nate. Hendo/Nate would be a tremendous fight that I think Hendo would lose. But at the end of the day Anderson takes out either one in pretty much the same fashion that he did the first time. The saying “in a different league” comes to mind when talking about Anderson Silva.

by Adam T. on Sep 13, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

-I agree it would be a joke of a fight, hence the reason Silva turned it down
-evans is a pussy
-Hendo doesn’t really deserve more money (350k to show money) in my opinion he’s not a draw. I’ve NEVER gotten a ppv saying “wow Dan Henderson is on this card!”
He’s already making goo money, a 10-15% show increase would suffice!

by kevin on Sep 13, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think evans is a pussy. He’s clearly looking to fight Rampage next and I don’t believe it will be long after this year that Rampage will be ready to fight.

good thing this event is free on spike! Randy is starting to take on the over rated role in my eyes, i mean come on put together a couple big wins not just one. I got Randy in this one but another loss would be devastating. UFC gotta do better than this!!!!

by zack on Sep 13, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

What do you mean “UFC better do better than this”? This is a good competetive fight. What the hell have UFC done wrong here?

And how the hell has Randy “taken on an over rated role”? He fights who the UFC give him.

Jeez what is it with you people? Cant you just appreciate good fights anymore without whinging and moaning.

UFC…heres one for you. Close down and release all your fighters. There seems to be an army of keyboard warriors who evidently could do better at promoting MMA. Apparently.

Whining spoiled brats. For a free card I don’t see much to complain about.

by Diceman on Sep 13, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t complain about this card if I wasn’t going to it, as the tickets were dear and I am hoping for as good a card as possible. No complaints about a Couture main event and full credit to Vera for stepping up, my main problem all along was the lack of big names and interesting fights because of all of the British fighters filling up the card, now it looks pretty decent hopefully the 12 fights will be exciting and Randy will put on another awesome fight.

by David W-S (the only respectable poster named David) on Sep 13, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear you David. Personally I would hope to get a little more for my money if I was going to the event also. But for those of us stateside that get this one for free, there’s little to complain about.

by Diceman on Sep 13, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m pretty much only going because this is the first UK card since 70 to be in Manchester and 80 to be in the North so I’ll take any card at this point.

This would be a much better show if the UFC weren’t so bothered about filling the card up with British fighters, fair enough the TUF 9 alumni deserve fights in Manchester but Kelly, Taylor and Etim fight on so many UK prelims that it’s gotten ridiculous. Hardy will probabaly get found out by a superior grappler in Kim and Bisping is coming off a devastating loss so a fight with Kang is clearly not a co-main event worthy fight. If we had a better co-main event e.g. Hendo-Nate and less of the usual suspects on the prelims then this would be a much better card in my opinion and we would have nothing to complain about.

randy is to smart for vara hes going to pick him apart same as tim

by plum crazy on Sep 13, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

I reckon it will be vera picking him apart, easily.he will be much quicker, stronger and use his distance to wear randy down.if it goes to ground, randy taps for the 1st time.and yes,i know the arguement,if nog cant make him tap,no-one can, balls to that, vera by decision or sub!

by bons on Sep 13, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

quicker yeah for sure, but stonger i doubt it, neither mentally or physically, only way he’d be stronger is if the cut down to 205 was to quick and drained his body bad which is possible considering his age

by DanTheMan on Sep 13, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

well, metal strenght is questionable for vera yes,but physical strenght,i’ll go with vera as he is already at that weight.couture isn’t as strong as he used to be,and considering he will need to cut weight to make 205 in a matter of nine weeks,he will drain a lot of strenght.

by bons on Sep 13, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

No way Vera will be stronger, and you’re smoking meth if you think Vera’s going to make him tap.

by Diceman on Sep 13, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Randy not as strong as he used to be?!? Are you nuts? Did you hot see the Lesnar fight. Randy pushed him up against the cage and held him there. He was doing quite well wrestling Lesnar before he got rocked with that punch…and Lesnar is a 285 lbs gorrilla and national champion wrestler. Nobody at 205 is gonna match strength with Couture…not even my boy Rampage.

by shonuff on Sep 14, 2009 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

man Minotauro went thorough hell with Couture and yet he didn’t tap. So what makes you think The Truth could make The Natural tap?

by Syd on Sep 13, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Randy shouldn’t be headlining fights unless they are for the number one contender spot. IMO he needs a few wins before he gets that shot. I get tired of watching Randy get his ass beat just to have everyone say “not bad for a old guy”.

WHY??? Couture just headlined at 102 Dont they have anyone else available to headline? Even though it was one heck of a fight.

by Dan Curr on Sep 13, 2009 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

A fighter who’s on a 2 fight losing streak should not headline anything, no matter how “big” they are.

Liddell, arguably a bigger UFC star than Couture was the CO main event after his loss to Evans. So why the !"#¤ would Couture be the MAIN event after TWO losses?

by Lester The Pimp on Sep 13, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

uhhh because Couture still puts together competative fights.. liddell gets knocked out…

by guyverbob on Sep 13, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

He wasn’t beating Lesnar in any way. He was just neutralizing the monster.

by Syd on Sep 13, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Liddell/Couture 4, anyone???? That way Liddell doesn’t need to worry about gettin KOd and he can probably get a nice KO victory for his last fight. Plus that’d generate some huge hype.

by frosnt on Sep 13, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

um maybe because one fight ago he was the defending World Heavyweigh Champion, and the one loss since was an exciting decision loss to the #2 Heavyweight in the history of the sport!
The question here isn’t Couture. It’s how the heck Vera is headlining an event when he’s not even ranked in the top 5 and has only beaten 1 ranked fighter in his career and that was 3 years ago against a very fat sloppy out-of-shape Frank Mir.

by shonuff on Sep 14, 2009 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

This fight just does not appeal to me. With Randy only having a few fights left in him, I’m not sure why they pick him to fight Vera. I’m not saying Vera can’t pull off a win here because he will be much quicker than Randy and I just don’t think Randy can take a punch like he used to and I think he’s going to have to eat a few to get Vera down. With that being said, I hope Randy can avoid the hands and hard kicks of Vera, take him down and whip his ass. But again, why Vera. Why not pay Hendo some cash and see Randy vs. Hendo at 205. Now that’s a main event and a fight everyone would want to see. And Hendo said Silva was the only fight at 185 that interested him and if Silva is out right now because of his elbow, pay Hendo some cash and make this fight happen Dana. Let Vera fight Thiago Silva next, I’d rather see that than Randy vs. Vera.

by brandon childers on Sep 13, 2009 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, Vera vs Thiago is a much more sensible matchup.

by shonuff on Sep 14, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know about worst, but close. Randy’s fans (I"m not one), justify it because of all his title matches…I like Vera and hope he kicks Randy’s head into next month!

Im so gutted the way this card is turning out! Even though the UFC 95 card had some really interesting and solid fights, the main event would never have been a main event in the U.S or Canada! Im sure the UFC think they can fob the UK fans off again with a card stacked with British fighters and a weak main event but as the sport grows over here, the purists want to see some intruiging fights with big names. I was excited to see lil Nog and Banha rumoured but apparantly thats now switched to 106. So far there are 10 Brits on the card plus Sobotta and a Scandanavian guy. We dont just want to see European fighters over here, with nothing fights like Bisping Kang as a co-main event. Obviously everyone would love to see Randy over here but in a fight that means something to the division. Personally i’d go for Marquardt v Henderson all day as a main event.

THIAGO SILVIA VS RANDY 105 MAKE IT HAPPEN

by levis on Sep 13, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

That would make more sense than Vera but at this stage I think that he was the only LHW who agreed to take the fight. Even though I’m not a fan of either, both are proven LHWs so it will be a competetive fight where either Randy proves that he is still a force at LHW or a younger fighter gets a huge win that propels them to the elite of the division, with the UK fans getting an MMA legend on the card in the process. I have no problems with this fight whatsoever.

Is anybody else wondering where the “superbowl like fights” are?

by Jason on Sep 13, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

They usually happen around New Years and Superbowl weekends.

;)

by Natas on Sep 13, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently Dana White forgot what he said after the UFC acquired PrideFC.

by Jason on Sep 13, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Other than UFC 75, the UK cards in particular have never had anything close to resembling a “superbowl like fight”.

UFC 70: Cro Cop-Gonzaga
UFC 72: Franklin-Okami (Northern Ireland)
UFC 75: Rampage-Henderson
UFC 80: Penn-Stevenson
UFC 85: Hughes-Alves
UFC 89: Bisping-Leben
UFC 95: Sanchez-Stevenson
UFC 105: Couture-Vera

Even the Republic of Ireland and Germany shows had superior main events, as Franklin-Henderson and Franklin-Silva were big fights between UFC and Pride legends.

Our best main events involved one star against a lesser name e.g. Cro Cop, Penn, Hughes and now Couture but some of them beggar belief, Bisping-Leben in particular was an awful main event and was originally supposed to be a last minute undercard fight at 85 before Leben got arrested. We have had some big fights promised e.g. Penn-Sanchez, Liddell-Shogun, Liddell-Evans, Silva (both)-Bisping, Couture-Evans but for one reason or another i.e. injuries, defeats, money these fights have not happened.

Admittedly some of these problems are far from the UFC’s fault as they can’t help someone being greedy, not wanting to fight abroad, losing a big fight or getting injured but it is still very frustrating at times being a UK MMA fan as we have missed out on some sick cards and huge fights, whilst being expected to pay top prices for what at times are essentially Fight Night caliber cards. Some of these shows have gone on to be very exciting e.g. 80, 95, whilst others have been awful to watch, so I’m hoping that 105 will turn out to be an exciting card live, as we have 12 fights including Couture, though I could live without seeing the same faces on every European card.

by David W-S (the only respectable poster named David) on Sep 13, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude, what could be a bigger super-bowlish fight than Rampage vs Hendo!!! That was a unification title bout between the reigning 205 champions of PRIDE and UFC!!! …not to mention that people had been dying to see that fight in PRIDE for years. The Japanese would’ve invaded England to get tickets to that fight.
Penn/Stevenson was a title fight. Franklin/Okami was a #1 contender fight. And CroCop/Gonzaga was 2 top-5 guys with the winner guaranteed the next title shot.

Granted, Bisping/Leben was a pathetic headliner, but Bisping’s the closest thing you’ve got to a star.

Randy trains Forrest and is sort of a mentor figure to him. I don’t think either of them would want this fight unless it was for a title. Especially after Forrest felt so humiliated in that loss to Silva, I don’t think Randy would be inclined to further demoralize one of his own students.

by shonuff on Sep 14, 2009 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

i’d rather see anderson silva vs vera just so vera would actually train hard and try not to get knocked out.

by remedy on Sep 14, 2009 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

No way. Randy only wants Top 5 guys or guys with big reps. Don’t see this fight happening.

by sudnvictory on Sep 14, 2009 12:53 AM EDT reply actions

According to Sherdog, both camps have already agreed to the fight. Our only hope is to convince Dana and Co that this is a crap match that nobody wants to see and that puts future headlining moneymaker fights at risk if Randy should lose.

This is exactly what I was afraid of when I heard Randy had signed for 6 more fights. If he’d signed for 3 the UFC would’ve made 3 important fights that would be history makers either way. But offering him 6 fights means they plan on capitalizing on his name as he ages to build up hype around their flash-in=the-pan up-and-comers at the expense of Randy’s legacy.

I’m sick of Randy Couture. I feel like every time I turn on the tv he’s fighting someone and every time I check the UFC schedules, he’s on the fight card. Could someone please explain why? Randy just fought, why does he get to fight again so soon? Is it a ratings thing? or is it just me?

I like vera and i want him to win but damn, the old rusty dude might get this simply because vera still needs to work his ass off. But vera ain’t stupid to get back on the game, of course he should be training hard like a m*thaf*cker cos not to lie, it’s gonna be a war against a veteran, ya get me? (but now he’s slow)hopefully vera will put more efforts into it cos this ain’t a joke thing. If vera wins, his career’s gonna start to be “THE sh*t” and i’m gonna like him even more! i think that he needs a real coach, a team. And he needs to be more aggressive.

i also think he’s a bit cute :)
