UFC Quick Quote: Paul 'Semtex' Daley respects Martin Kampmann -- but still plans on knocking him out

"Some fighters in his position wouldn’t have wanted to fight another opponent instead of Swick. I am getting a lot of praise for stepping in, but he’s done the same. He was due to fight in a massive bout and the winner was expected to get a title shot. Beating me at this point doesn’t guarantee him a title shot, but he wants to fight anyway. But that’s why I respect Kampmann ... This is going to be a war while it lasts but I will knock Kampmann out."
– Paul "Semtex" Daley talks to Telegraph.co.uk about his Octagon debut against Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. The heavy-handed 26-year-old has vaulted himself to the upper echelon of welterweights after Mike Swick withdrew from the upcoming event -- but will "The Hitman" send him tumbling back down the ladder?

I like Paul a lot more for those comments. I still think this is the best replacement I can remember.
I don’t care who wins really, but I’m betting Hitman sub.

If Kampman cant get the fight down SEmtex will THRASH him!
SEmtex used to fight at middleweight like Martin and is a pretty good athlete. I dont think Kampamn will be able to take him down at will, so I really like SEmtex’s chances at an upset in this fight.

I agree zino. If Kampmann think’s he can stand and trade he’ll be in for a short evening, gotta swallow his pride and work for the sub.

I wish Daley was about 50 pounds bigger so we could see him in a grappling match against Kongo. Kampman by triangle, round 1.

LOL PW.
Not sure that won’t go over most peoples heads but that would be Hilarious to watch.
Like two guys in straigh jackets going for the take down.

Good one PW, throw in Manhoef and Houston then we have the funniest openweight grappling tournament of all time.
Full credit to Kampmann and Daley for taking this fight, if Martin fights smart then he should win this easily by submission but Semtex has a punchers chance and if he keeps it standing then there could be a massive upset.

UFC 107:
Todd Duffee vs. Paul Buentello
I agree with Semtex!
by john G on Sep 11, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions
this morning i heard that the kongo/mir fight was still on so i was wondering who would be fighting duffee
thanks for the news
by ufcaddict on Sep 11, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Johnny whats Eddie A. saying from your lunch?
Why Bellator?
Duffee vs Bueno is a grrrrrrreat fight. Good reasons for both guys to get it on and I love Paul’s new jab. Makes sense considering Duffee has the new KO record set up by a jab.
by Big Zino on Sep 11, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Isn’t Buentello under contract to Strikeforce?

sherdog had this big story up where coker dissed paul

Like I said, its just a rumor at this point, ut I would be really happy if it turned out to be true.
Lunch with Eddie was mellow. I tried not to act like a star struck fan and ask him a million questions but I did ask a few. He said he wont be fighting in the UFC anytime soon. it makes no sense for him financially and there are plenty of tough guys he wants to fight outside of the UFC anyway. He will probably take a fight with Strikeforce/Dream in his next fight, possibly before the year is done. He has to wait for Bellator to get him someone good to fight, but really LOVES that organization. Just a cool, down to earth laid back guy…very friendly. Just dont bring up Aoki! lol
I did take a few pics, I will post them on facebook when I get the chance. Only spent about haf an hoour with the man, but iit was a good time. FYI: HIs wife is focking hot! lol

Good fight for Duffee if that’s the case, Buentello is an awful fighter with a decent name but has experience on his side, so it’s a very winnable fight for Todd but at the same time is over a decent name and not some random can.

Buentello has always been one of my stand up fighter so I jump in here. I have always thought and said he would have beaten Arlovski in a rematch. Since Arlovski has been beaten by Fedor and Rogers that means nothing anymore, but even though he lost to Arlovski I always considered him the better striker of the two. Arlovski had plenty of man love back then so my comments weren’t much appreciated. Was very much impressed with Buentellos’ last fight but he could easily get knocked out with one punch in this fight. I hope he does well the UFC should of had him as well as Trevor Prangley back ages ago.

Does it matter who is the #1 contender is at this point? I mean does anyone really see kappmann or swick posing any threat to GSP?
by Steve on Sep 11, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions
They can’t just never have another WW title fight again or let GSP have the real belt and create a Best-of-the-Rest belt for the rest of the division to fight over.
by PW on Sep 11, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions
It doesn’t have to be a best of the rest belt, they could just compete for GSP’s jock strap.
by O damn he got caught on Sep 11, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions
at least swick and kampmann would give GSP an exciting fight unlike silvas last few title defenses
by brendan on Sep 11, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions
It would be as exciting as Silva-Griffin. Unless either of them can take the insane beating fitch did, which wasn’t exciting, but an impressive desire for pain.
by James S on Sep 11, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions
They could compete to see which guy gets to serve Georges water and towel the sweat of him inbetween rounds in his next fight.

i like this fight a lot more than the original match. i enjoy watching both these guys and it should be a good fight. paul has tightened up his takedown defense, but his ground game is a work in prgress. if martin can get this to the ground early he may be able to pull out the win, but i feel like daley will overwhelm martin on the feet, despite a reach disadvantage. it took jake shields close to two full rounds to submit paul, so we’ll see if martin can do better. obviously martin’s stand up is light years ahead of jake’s, but will it be enough?
all this makes the match more interesting to me than swick vs. kampmann.
by battery on Sep 11, 2009 12:03 PM EDT reply actions
martin absorbed mcfedries punches and subbed him same result here
by nelson on Sep 11, 2009 12:29 PM EDT reply actions
But its debatable who has better sub defense, daley lasted a while with shields and kampman doesn’t have the sub skills shields has.
So I could see a standup war and possible upset, yet I don’t see either man close threat to gsp
by phenomenal angel on Sep 11, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions
dude i’m saying it right now. for those of you who thinks swick isnt worthy of a title shot is dumb. for those of u who think this is a better match is an idiot. SWICK WILL HAVE THE TITLE SOON.
by bellio on Sep 11, 2009 2:22 PM EDT reply actions
smoke another one, he might be worthy of a shot but he wont hold the belt anytime soon

not they let him go, he wouldnt sign a six figure contract to fight fedor, “Strikeforce President Scott Coker confirmed the news in an e-mail sent via company representative Mike Afromowitz.”
“We offered Paul a six-figure contract to fight Fedor, but he turned it down,” Coker said. “Paul’s decision is understandable considering Fedor’s level of skill but, at the same time, Paul didn’t really fit into our plans. He’s been a solid journeyman fighter and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
… “I’ve never claimed to be the best in the sport. But to say I turned down Fedor because of his skill level is a slap in the face.” said Buentello.
by DanTheMan on Sep 11, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions
Until I got to the end of that post I thought you were talking about Paul Daley, since this is a thread about him. It saved me from making a joke about Fedor running out of middleweights to beat up and moving on to welterweights.
by PW on Sep 11, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
lol yeah it was supposed to be a reply to marcbjr2 earlier but ended up down here after moderation for some reason oh well
by DanTheMan on Sep 11, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions
The real question should be why Coker tried to match Buentello up with Fedor in the first place, I’ve given him the benefit of the doubt but that is ridiculous. Thankfully this obvious mismatch is not happening and Fedor is actually fighting someone dangerous in Grim.
by David W-S (the only respectable poster named David) on Sep 11, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions
exactly why offer him the fight and he refuses, then say oh well we dont have any plans for you anyways, so basically you are just trying to put fedor against guys you know or hope he will beat, that really doesnt make sense well it does but not a smart thing to say, basically its like saying ok well pay you six figures to lose to fedor, paul said no, Coker got pissed ok well we werent planning on you winning and were gonna ditch you.
by DanTheMan on Sep 11, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions
daley should be fighting at lw. kampmann will make short, short, work of daley. watch.
