MMA Quick Quote: Sean Salmon the 'coward' didn't throw the fight -- he gave up

eat-salmon

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"How he said he threw the fight -- come on, man. If you give up, you give up. What do you mean, throwing the fight? Re-word it a little bit. And about pulling his arm out then pulling it back in, no, [he] didn’t do that. He wanted out. He didn’t want to fight me any longer. I was prepared, he wasn’t. He knew that. He knew it was going to get worse later on in the fight ... It feels like (the victory) means nothing now. It means nothing ... I think that [a word to describe Salmon] would be 'coward.'"

Allan Weickert reacts to the controversy surrounding embattled ex-UFC light heavyweight and 'Fight Nite in the Flats' opponent Sean Salmon, who claimed he "gave" Weickert an armbar submission win at a June 3 bout in Ohio to avoid further damage. Salmon, who is perhaps best known for getting poached by Rashad Evans, apparently had much more important work to do in the near future as a training partner for Michael Bisping and Cheick Kongo and did not want to risk injury. His admission set off a firestorm on the message boards among mixed martial arts purists and he has since attempted to clarify his incendiary remarks. Weickert however still thinks there's something fishy with Salmon -- who was subsequently booted from a Sept. 11 fight in NJ and could face disciplinary action back in Ohio.

Exactly! Other than that Weickert would be smart to just keep his mouth shut and let Salmon take all the heat. Injecting yourself unnecessarily is dumb.

What are you talking about? Why should anyone offer Salmon another fight? A man who gives up is a waste of a card imo, for whatever reasons he may have had. Also this doesn’t make me think anything bad here, everything said in the quote is right on and Salmon is more than a coward he’s trash and should always be spoken in the same sentence as Starnes.

I find this whole thread a waste of space. 2 fighters no one cares about have controversy after the fight,, WOOP TI DOO!!!! Whatever happened is irrelevant. If it isn’t a major organization with top tier fighters, why bother, I’m sure all kinds of dumb shit happens at these small low budget shows. There’s a reason they are not in a major organization!

He must have gone to the Rampage school of business…give up fighting…just go for the money.

by Buster Bluth on Sep 10, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I cant wait til Rampage shuts you up Buster and treats Rashad like the reality star that he is. Rashad is getting KTFO…no doubt about it!

as for Salmon…no respect for him. He should never be sanctioned to fight again! Its not fair to his opponent. Salmon is probably the biggest name he has ever fought and this situation taints the bigget win of his career. Not fair!

Well we’ll be waiting a loooooooooong time for that one since your boy is trying to avoid fighting anyone in the top 5 and seems to be allegic to the belt. While Bumpage is busy trying to act his way out of a wet paper bag…Rashad will be training non-stop and getting his apology speech ready for Bumpage’s surviving family members.

If the biggest win of your career is over Salmon then maybe Bumpage could use a make up artist on set…I hear it pays more than being a fighter.

i dont think he is dodging anyone, the guy has fought way better than rashad in his career, i think he is just trying to get money

for example: he didn’t fight machida because there was more money offered to him to take on someone he hates

and now he isn’t fighting evans because he has been offered more money for this film

i do not like him for what he has done but he is definitely not dodging anyone because he is scared

Salmon is a tool. He should find another profession.

by Stinky nuts on Sep 10, 2009 10:05 AM EDT reply actions

The bad part is several fighters just give up during fights. They just dont talk about it.

by yoda on Sep 10, 2009 10:10 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly. Nobody cared about this fight until Salmon started the drama after the fact. It wouldn’t have mattered at all.

What happened to “MMA Junkies” golden boy?! I never liked Salmon. This story doesn’t surprise me at all. What a coward!

by ducknow on Sep 10, 2009 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

don’t fighter bash!!!! You will get banned on the Junkie board for saying anything that Fat Performify doesn’t like. I think his favorite past time next to eating is moderating those boards. Joke of a site. This place is so much better.

screw salmoN! I hope he never fights in any MMA org again! ban this mutha

by manalito on Sep 10, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Man everyone is being pretty hard on him. What about all the fighters that tap due to strikes? Thats the same as quitting. What about the fighters that give up their back instead of trying to shrimp to get back to half guard? Just like when BJ Penn lost to hughes. He said he let hughes pass his guard to mount because of a injury. Its all a form of giving up not all fighters have heart! Every fighter will not fight 5 rounds with a broken hand(vera and franklin). Or finish a fight with a broken arm(Randy Couture). Some good fighters have a yellow streak in them(Frank Mir, Tito or Starnes)

by yoda on Sep 10, 2009 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

Because this fat prick claimed that he lost on purpose so he could go train with Wolfslair, not only is that incredibly disrespectful it is also fight fixing. The guy was an awful fighter anyway and with this stunt Salmon has also shown he is a rotten person, I hope the loser gets banned from the sport we don’t need people like him giving it a bad name.

by David W-S on Sep 10, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW, lot of hate going on. sean’s only guilt in this whole thing is not thinking thru and reading what he wrote prior to submitting it to junkie. all of you seem to act like you know what was going on in his life when he stepped into the ring. wolfslair screwed him badly and he was having marital problems, among other things. he should have dropped out of that fight because his head just wasn’t in it. he kept the fight because he respected kalikas and didn’t want to leave him high and dry on short notice. he fought because he wanted to honor his contract. the wolfslair gig came about literally within a couple of days and then he flew out. did he purposely throw the fight or fix it? no. is he guilty of mentally giving up? yes. what fighter out there has never given up in a match at some point in their careers? can every single one of you say that?
