Suspended NFL players seek refuge at Randy Couture's X-Treme Couture gym in Las Vegas

Props: NY Daily News
Quoteworthy:
"The reason why I'm doing MMA is it's probably the closest thing you can find to football as far as conditioning, cardiovascular and the physical aspect. I'm not going to be fighting and I'm not going to be getting hit. I'm just going to be training my behind off.... I want to come back the way I left -- in shape and focused."
New York Jets outside linebacker, Calvin Pace, will turn to X-Treme Couture in Las Vegas, Nevada, to stay fit while he serves a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing supplements. The 6' 4," 265-pound monster will by joined suspended Saints defensive linemen Will Smith and Charles Grant. Pace, Smith and Grant won't be allowed back on the gridiron until Oct. 10, giving them more than a month of intense training under "The Natural" before heading back to work. Pretty cool. Feel free to share any NFL or MMA related thoughts in the comments section below ... Week one is right around the corner.

Not a bad idea for these guys. Thursday night the Titans go to Pittsburgh to stomp on some more terrible towels!

That the Titans shot themselves in the foot and saved the Steelers from another beatdown in Nashville? Yeah, I saw that too. Titans only lost Big Al, and are poised to make a run. You’ll see Thursday.

they will be one of the few people to afford the monthly fee

How much do you guys think they will be charged per month? Or how about anyone for that matter for a months training?

Great idea for the players, but also great to further legimize the sport of MMA when it’s being accepted by the players of the most popular sport in the US.

“legimize”? Do you mean legitimize? I don’t think busted/suspended druggies would legitimize the sport of mma, I hope it would take more than that.

Agreed KMac- training with athletes from other sportS will only help MMA. It’s a good look.

“it’s probably the closest thing you can find to football as far as conditioning, cardiovascular and the physical aspect”
I wonder if he means it’s an acceptable step down in this regard?

I wonder if Couture has a special NFL players fee to bank off of them. something like
Average joe…….50.00 bucks
Amateur fighters..100.00
Profighters…….200.00
Individual classes 75.00
Former NFL/NFL guys…10,000.00

I think it’d be smarter for him to charge a few thousand less. The word of mouth alone will get him more pro clientele. It’s a great business move really.

Or you could just work out? I don’t see the point of this really. Maybe he thinks it’s more enjoyable than just plain workouts.

LOL… a FOUR game suspension? And MMA fighters get suspended for 9 months?

Its because the players union and the NFL have a structured prgram for offenders, its not that hard toi figure out why. And the players union wont budge on that

I’m so sick of performance enhancing drugs in sports. I’ve lost a lot of interest in pro sports of all kinds for that reason. I would like to see Randy take the high road and say “hit the road, we only train natural athletes here.” But, I’m sure he wouldn’t want to turn away the money or exposure. Too bad…

Charles Grant and Will Smith from the Saints got suspended for using a GNC Supplement that did not list all the ingredients one of which was a banned substance for cutting weight. It is not like they were juicing or anything. And just working out and running can not get you in football shape. Especially line men pushing on each other. I think that it will be excellent for them. As for a Saints fan I cant wait to see them back on the field.

That’s pretty cool. I can see the MMA training being helpful for him on the football field in terms of strength, conditioning, and what not.
