Cheick mate: 'Minotauro' Nogueira wants Frank Mir rematch at UFC 107 on Dec. 12

Props: MMAWeekly.com
Quoteworthy:
"If I was making excuses, I would have been making excuses right after the fight. I'm not making excuses, I'm giving you a reason.... If Mir feels it’s an excuse, then lets get in the Octagon and see whether it's an excuse or a reason in December and settle it. I’d love to fight Frank Mir at UFC 107."
Move over Cheick Kongo, former Pride FC and UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira wants to rematch Frank Mir at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12. Mir handed "Big Nog" his first ever technical knockout loss at last year’s UFC 92 event, opening the door for speculation that years of abuse had finally caught up to the battle-weary Brazilian and that his fighting days were numbered. He recently silenced the critics with a thrilling unanimous decision win over Randy Couture at UFC 102 last month. In doing so, it also brought up questions about his health in the fight against Mir -- Nogueira was hospitalized with staph infection days before the bout and was also nursing a torn ligament in his knee. Mir was upset with the post-fight questions, saying that all it did was hollow out his win rather than give him credit for stopping a legend in the sport dead in his tracks. So should the promotion push Kongo aside and book Nogueira opposite Mir in December to eliminate any and all excuses? It's certainly got a much more intriguing back story that can be hyped, don't ya' think?

Please please please Joe Silva…make this rematch happen so we can finally shut Mir up.

Honestly…after seeing Nog fight Randy can anyone really say that Mir could beat the same fighter that showed up that night? I’m sorry but Mir’s improved stand up game is way overrated…it’s only based on the Nog victory and it’s now extremely obvious that Nog was operating at 40% at the best.

scrap the kongo mir fight and have
mir vs nog
kongo vs duffee

Good idea ufcaddict Kongo vs Duffe is a great fight but premature… and maybe Kongo won´t accept because this fight won´t put him in line for the title. Let put my man Gonzaga vs Kongo.

This rematch won’t happen because Mir is a trash fighter who’s gonna get sent packing after Kongo smashes on him. God i hate that smug pr!ck.
He wants to talk about excuses. We’ve had to listen to his “woe is me and my bum leg” bs for how many years?

Mir used that leg excuse for about 4 years…Shogun has been hurt for a year and a half and is still a tough match up for anyone…Why? Simple. Before Shogun’s serious injury he was actually good. Before Mir’s injury he was a Farce… Mir is TRASH! The idiot has the audacity to be an egomaniac. what a fool. The UFC’s marketing team is so damn good, they managed to even fool Mir into thinking he is worse a damn!
I officially dont even want to speak to anyone with a pea-brain that thinks Mir could ever defeat the version of Nog that showed up to fight Randy!
Hey Frank Mir; The house of cards illusion that is your career is about to come crumbling down! Hope that WEC gig is paying well cause there is no doubt that YOU WONT BE IN THE UFC by the time 2011 rolls around!

That is a fight I’d like to see… Mir Vs Nog II. I get the feeling someone in the UFC reads these blogs and gages us fans reactions as tpo whether it’s a fight the fans want to see. They junked’ the Hendo vs Franklin II, probably based on blogs just like this… Lets make it happen!

The Nog Mir rematch has to happen but be careful what you wish for – if it isnt a dominant KO or sub win for Nog it could turn into a trilogy.(and given Mirs BJJ ability and that Nog couldnt finish Randy when he had him rocked, it may very well go to decision)
As far as Cheik, I prefer Kongo v Gonzaga matchup and would put Dufee against Struve or Hardonk.

Panic Zoo; Believe me when i tell you that Nog’s jits is light years ahead of Mir’s and so is his stand up!

The first thing I thought of when Nog smashed Randy was how much I hope he gets another chance to do the same to Mir. I didn’t want to make any excuses for Nog but he was clearly far from his best in that fight, Mir did well but I’d like to see him beat a rejuvenated Nog and if he is that confident then Frank would take a rematch in a heartbeat. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Frank avoids a rematch for as long as possible.
by David W-S on Sep 6, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah David…I can easily seeing Mir avoiding the rematch, but then again…Under his super ego, mir knows he isnt very good, so he might take this fight against Nog, because its a big money fight for him and there wont be too many big fights left for Mir after his luck runs out and gets exposed. Then there wont be anything the UFC’s marketing machine can do to salvage his image.
Mir = C, B level at best!
someone needs to start a petition to scratch the Mir/Kongo fight and replace it with Mir/Nog. Regardless of what people think about how the rematch will go…FANS were cheated out of the coaches fight on that season of TUF because that wasnt even a real fight. I think us fans deserve to see how that fight would have turned out if Nog wasnt on his death bed.
by john G on Sep 6, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Mir will accept this matchup, besides Kongo it’s probably the best matchup he can hope for. He killed Nog last time, so if there’s anybody he’s convinced he could do it again to, it’s NOG! I don’t care if by some chance Mir wins, I want Nog to get a chance at redemption…. One thing I have to say about Nogs VS Couture… is that I don’t like Couture weighing in the low 120’s for heavyweight fights. The best I ever saw Couture fight is when he fought Gonzaga… now his punches don’t pack quite as much power and without that little heavier body base, it’s easier to manuever Couture standing and on the ground without the extra 8-10lbs… Couture’s strength is in close quarters such as clinch or on top, the ligher weight & less power at heavy’s doesn’t help him.

Are you sure about that?? Maybe Randy was not such a good opponent and made Nog look really good?
Honestly, I like both fighters and could’nt pick a favorite when they first met. I would love to see a rematch to settle it after Mir is done with Kongo.

Mir is the only one that reveres his stand up game though! I am sure most fighters that actually have a crediable standup game laugh at the idea of him trying to stand and trade with them. If he tries to stand and bang with Kongo, a true kick boxer, he is going to get handled. If the Mir vs. Nog fight happened 10 times Nog wins 9 of them. Mir just got that 1 out of 10. He got Nog on a bad night! I would love nothing more then to see Nog get the rematch and steam roll Mir into mma oblivion!

I am personally not a big fan of the Randy hype train either, but his accomplishments as a whole far surpass Mir’s. Couture’s fight career is a who’s, who of number ones. Whether he got the #1 spots because of his marketabilty or not facts are he is always fighting the best and making them earn the win! Mir’s career is a hodge podge of crap and diarrhea. 3 of his 4 losses are to crap- Verra(not even a true HW), Marcio Cruz, and Ian (Who?) Freeman! Look at Randy’s resume. The dinosaur that is Randy Couture, is still a much bigger threat to the HW division then Frank Mir could ever dream of being. Hell Randy’s last 5 fights win or lose far surpass Mir’s entire career. Couture’s last 5 fighters are Lidell(LHW Champ), Sylvia (HW Champ), Gonzaga(top contender at the time and an amazing fighter when his head is in the game), Lesnar, and Nog. The last 5 fighters Mir faced: B Brock, Nog (both legit fights), then Hardonk, Verra, and Cruz. Mir is a not all that impressive and Nog is in the right place of mind now and will/is going to expose him for all that he is worth or not worth.
by Da Monkey on Sep 6, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
first of all you should get some facts right… look at frank miirs record. 12-4.lost to marcio cruz, ian freeman, brandon vera (who is not a heavyweight)…yeah randy might have 16-10 losses but at least he is not losing to crap opponents…nog will kick his ass this time. randy and nog would both whip mirs arse.

Which ’facts" are inaccurate? AND yes, Brandon Vera was a heavyweight for their match, check your facts there jbone. Brandon recently went down to LHW.

It was obvious to me, within seconds of the start of the Nog Mir fight, that something was wrong with Nog. He looked, moved & reacted like a zombie. Mir would throw punches & Nog seemed unable to react, even with natural head movements…. he would just catch the puches with his face & slowly backpedal. This is a guy who trained in boxing with the Cuban National Team…. it just didn’t make any sense. Most of Mir’s punches & kicks are very telegraphed, too.
Knowing Nog’s history as a fighter, there is nothing wrong with pointing out that he was obviously out of sorts for this fight. I think any UFC heavyweight would have beaten him that night. He’s a warrior who was unwilling to make an excuse to back out, but he fought when he should have been in bed, literally.

Anyone who think Frank will beat Big Nog again is either his relative or retarded – it’s as simple as really.
by jayshogun on Sep 5, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Really now LOL. You came up with your thesis how? Yes NOG looked good but to say he is going to beat Mir with out a doubt is very naive. Randy looked in great shape but because of his age he was unable to bulk up and add the extra weight he use to be able to put on fighting at HW wich I believe was a huge factor in his fight with NOG, being lighter and quicker many of us believed Randy would would have the edge in the stand up but when he lost that battle NOG was also able to control the smaller HW Couture very well it was a great battle on the ground but having the size advantage showed. A lot of you believe Mirs stand up is overrated and if it is you will most likely be right on picking to win but if you are wrong like I believe Mir will do much the same as their last fight and have a great chance on taking out NOG I hope the UFC makes this happen because I believe Mir will earn more respect from the MMA fans?
by Beaver on Sep 5, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
First off why would you want Mir to win this fight if your a fan of his. Putting Mir back in title contention is a bad move as long as Lesnar has the title period. Lesnar has his number. Secondly, Mirs stand up looked incredibly sloppy for the NOG fight(we didnt get to see much of it during the Lesnar fight) and I have said that from that very night. He is going to drop his right arm to deliver the uppercut light he was during the first fight, NOG will react this time and it will be all over.
Just my honest opinion
by ASR on Sep 5, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I never understood why people were thinking Randy would have an advantage in the stand-up game. Maybe they meant “dirty boxing” against the fence. Nog has always had much crisper more efficient punches than Randy, plus good leg kicks and a significant reach advantage.

YESSSS!!!! PLEASE Mr.Joe! MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
The whole world was shocked by the way Mir won that fight and no fan who’d ever seen him before was surpised to learn that he was sick and injured. I’m not saying Mir has no chance to win, he’s stronger and quicker on the ground. But what are the chances of Frank Mir PUNCHING Nog out? Nobody has punched out Nog in 38 fights. If heavy hitters like Fedor (3 times), CroCop, Hendo, Barnett, even 350 lbs Bob Sapp didn’t have the punching power KO a healthy Nog, no way Frank Mir hits harder than those guys!
by shonuff on Sep 5, 2009 12:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Please scrap the Mir/Kongo fight. Let Kongo fight Gonzaga and let Mir and Nog get it on again. There is no way Mir knocks out Nog again espically with those reaching upper-cuts that he was landing. I can see where Mir is a little upset with everyone making excuses even though I think they are true, it deminishes a great win over a legend. So come on UFC, let them do it at UFC 107 so they can settle the score with no more excuses or reasons as Nog put it, once and for all. We’ll see a great fight like the one we were all expecting the first time!

I dont think this fight will happen in Memphis. With Rampage out of the picture they need a “demographic” draw. Not to sound racist, but this is the reality of Memphis. This is not to say that all A.A. want to see a person of color but demographic data points to this reality… Kind of disappointed, the thought of seeing rampage, rashad, bj and the nightmare was enough for me modify holliday plans and go get some tickets.
by TapedUpPair on Sep 5, 2009 2:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What happened to my earlier post?
Dude, if you think “Cheek” Congo is a “demographic” draw, you misunderstand Memphis culture. Rampage is 100% pure home-grown Memphis. After him, Brock and B.J. are probably the most popular fighter here. (Though I personally can’t stand them.) We don’t identify with “Cheek” any more than we do with Bisping. He’s European, what Rampage would probably call “Afrenchican”, and the only reason we’d care about him is that Rampage likes to clown on him in practice and interviews. Plus he can knock some folks out. Mir is widely hated here and we don’t care what color skin his opponent’s has, as long as Mir gets his behind handed to him. Nog is more likely to get the job done than “Cheek”.

Funny thing about this is that there are many people hating on Mir for his personality and yet there were so many defending him when Lesnar had his post fight antics.
Mir talked massive smack that he didnt come close to backing up. I was going through my head for him to talk all the shit he wants to now after Lesnar dismantled him. Lesnar is still and idiot for the Bud Light comments but as for sportmanship and such. Mir is an idiot and deserved what he got. The funny thing is he still didnt learn his lesson. Mir still thinks he is the best fighter ever…. very funny.
Now for this fight. Funny thing is that Mir won the first one by handily and I bet he comes in as the underdog if this fight were to happen. He does need to fight NOG again before he would ever get a another shot at the title if Lesnar keeps it.
I see a rematch between NOG and Mir being very bad for Mir. He is going to talk his smack about how he hates that people are doubting his victory over NOG and that he won the last fight blah blah blah and then it will look similiar to the Lesnar fight as he gets schooled on everything he has bragged about.

I think it was pretty obvious right away that Nog was not 100% in the fight. I don’t see him making excuses, I think he just said, I was not 100%. That’s fair.
Nog is a classy fighter and I don’t think he would look to take anything away from Mir or anyone else. Is Mir a classy guy? I think we all know the answer is “no”.
Mir is trying to make the most of his rebound (15 minutes) before people realize he is not as good as they thought. Within one year, he will be irrelevant in the HW division, IMO.

I wish fighters would back out of fights when they’re sick or injured. People watch big fights to settle the question “Who’s better.” When fighters fight injured or sick, the fans don’t get the answers they’re looking for. I know people are disappointed when a big fight gets postponed, but it’s better than seeing a top fighter lose a fight for the wrong reasons and have that go down in history and mar his legacy. In 10 years people will have forgotten that Nog was on his deathbed, but that loss will still be in the books. (And Mir will probably still be bragging about it.)

Who else thinks it’s time to split the HW division (or drop the weight limit to 245/250 and make these gargantuans fight at Superheavy where they belong. A few years ago, a 60 lbs gap in HW was necessary due to the severe shortage of talent above 205. But with a whole mess of giant guys like Brock, Carwin, JDS popping up, “little guys” at 220-235 like Randy, Nog, and anyone else under 250 lbs become irrelevant to the title.

Man, I hope not!!! Boxing has a buttload of divisions and it’s boring as heck. They wanted more titles so they could have more title fights to sell, but it means nothing to be a champion of there’s a champion every 5-7 lbs and 50 guys are walking around with gold belts on claiming to be #1. That’s one of the reasons people don’t give a crap about boxing anymore. It’s like countries that just print more money till their money isn’t worth spit. .
